BABIES BORN ON NEW YEARS

This is Su Lin, born on August 2, 2005 at the San Diego Zoo. I took this photo in January 2006 so she was only about 6 months old here. The whole time I was at the Panda exhibit, this little ball of panda fur was asleep in the trees, just like this.

The lovable and charismatic panda is one of the most popular animals in the world. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most endangered. Found only in China, one of the world's most populous countries, the giant panda clings to survival, facing habitat fragmentation and poaching as its greatest threats. It is estimated that as few as 1,600 pandas remain in the wild today.

The San Diego Zoo currently has the largest population of Giant Pandas outside of mainland China, Bai Yun (female), Gao Gao (male), two year old Mei Sheng, and a female panda cub, Su Lin, born on August 2, 2005. They can be seen on the San Diego Zoo Panda Cam. Bai Yun and Gao Gao's most recent cub was born on August 3, 2007. On September 14, 2007, Meg Sutherland-Smith of San Diego Zoo, announced that the 6-week-old panda cub is a girl, the 4th giant panda born at the zoo (all to Bai Yun, 16 and Gao Gao). Chinese custom ordains to name her at 100 days.

Little Eimear Rose was actually awake for a while tonight!

She had to be registered today and she became Eimear Rose Parr.

Eimear = Irish form of Eimhear, an Old Gaelic name, which might be from eimh (swift) or from eamhean (twin).

The name of the wife of the Irish mythological hero Cuchulainn is most frequently represented as Emer, although it is occasionally found as Eamhair in Scotland and pronounced 'ayve-er'

According to Irish legend, Emer was said to have possessed the six gifts of womanhood: beauty, voice, speech,
needlework, wisdom, and chastity.

There is no separate English form, but Emer seems the most popular in modern usage.
