Baader Planetarium UV IR-Cut Telescope Filter 2" FUVIR-2 This filter is a must for all digital imaging with Digital Cameras, CCD Cameras, and modified Web Cams. Also useful for protecting valuable H-Alpha filters from heat stress and damaging IR (Daystar, etc). Due to their extremely high optical quality, these filters may be stacked and used far in front of the focal plane (necessary for imaging uses). Like the Baader Planetarium Contrast-Booster, the UV-IR-Cut filter uses the very latest coating technology, to deliver the finest filtration quality and lifetime durability. Features: (11) Self-portrait in UV and IR Self-portrait in UV with IR inset. Not the best UV lighting conditions, requiring 1/8s @ f/6.3, ISO2500, Baader U (Venus) filter. I find it very hard to stay perfectly still for that length of time. Also, as I couldn't be on both sides of the camera at the same time, focus was a hit-and-miss affair requiring several test shots. It does look really soft, but it's the best I could achieve in the time available. Ho hum. This problem is exacerbated by the darkness of many terrestrial objects, such as trees. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. A subject of enduring fascination for Germans (and anybody interested in the more vivid manifestations of the '60s counterculture), the Baader Meinhof gang roared through Europe for years, dividing a population that either demonized or romanticized their exploits. In The Baader Meinhof Complex the goal for director Uli Medel (Last Exit to Brooklyn) and screenwriter Bernd Eichinger is to play the material down the middle: to portray the events of the outlaw group without deciding they are either heroes or terrorists. Some of the motives for the Baader Meinhof gang are laid out early on; for instance, that for the generation born in Germany after Hitler's nightmare had ended, a return to fascism was unacceptable--even to the point of guerrilla activities against the state. Some of Germany's biggest stars are involved in bringing the principals to life, including Moritz Bleibtreu (Run Lola Run) as the self-important ringleader Andreas Baader and Johanna Wokalek (North Face) as Gudrun Ensslin, his coconspirator and lover. The most intriguing narrative thread of the story comes from the decision by journalist Ulrike Meinhof (Martina Gedeck, from The Lives of Others) to leap from her stable life and abruptly join Baader and Ensslin on the run. The subversive activities of the Red Army Faction (as the group dubbed itself), including bombings and arson attacks, are chronicled in rapid, blunt fashion by the movie, which seems less interested in a thoughtful reflection on these incidents than in shoving them in your face. In that sense, you might begin to wish the movie had taken a side, just to provide some coherent perspective. As a rush of sensations, the film's appeal can't be denied, and it scored an Oscar nomination in the 2008 Best Foreign Language Film category. Although it runs two and a half hours, you might find yourself wishing for more screen time for the investigator (the great Bruno Ganz) tracking down the gang. Fluval G6 Fine Pre-Filter Cartridge The Fluval G6 Fine Pre-Filter Cartridge is designed for daily use with marine aquariums where suspended debris is minimal or it can be used as a polishing cartridge for standard or fresh water aquariums. The fine mesh will trap debris 75 microns or larger for unparalleled mechanical filtering results. Debris remains caught between each pleat until it is removed and rinsed. However, solid wastes can break down into soluble wastes and regular cartridge rinsing is recommended. The effectiveness of the Fluval G6 pre-filtration process means that less solid waste is solubilised in the aquarium water for less waste accumulation and also makes the chemical and biological filtration components of the system more effective. I think it's time for me to stop buying anything Polaroid. I'm done. [Unless I can get my hands on an Onyx. But then that's it for me. Really.] M's system 2008 My friend M's system has evolved over time and he's just recently taken yet another big jump. His priorities are accurate timbre, timbre, tone and more timbre esp strings...think yo yo ma's cello. California Hazel (Corylus cornuta ssp. californiaca) California Hazel (Corylus cornuta ssp. californiaca), Corylaceae (Hazel) Family, Blooms: (female) January-March Uses -- Past and Present: Hazelnuts were eaten to seome extent by the Indians of california. In England a cultivated form of hazelnut is planted for numberous purposes. The wood is used for making charcoal from which artsists get their drawing pencils. It is tough and flexible and used for javelin shafts and fishing poles. Roots are used for veneering in cabinetry and in refining wine. Shelled nuts easily shed their skins when roased in a slow oven for 30 mintues, Cooled, then rubbed with a towel. Hacelnuts are delicious right off the bush, but may be roasted and used in innumerable recipies. Squirrels, chickmunks, and other rodents feed on the nuts; grouse eat the catkinds, rabbits and deer browse the entire plant. California Hazel is a common shurb of shaded areas within the Coast Range. It can be foun on wooded slopes as well as near streams and creeks. Reaching 3 to 10 feet in height, these large shrubs have smooth slender stems and an open, spreading appearance. The alternate leaves have rounded bzses and sharply pointed tips. Their softness and fine double-toothed margins are characteristic features. In October and November, slender 1 to 3 inch long catkins appear; they relearse plloen from January to March In late spring and summer the nuts mature, cover by a tubular bristly husk. These nuts are not only edible, but are comparable in flovor to commercial filberts. They can also be ground into a meal and baked in bread. Stems from this shrub were usfull in basketry. To prepare the stems for weaving, the indians either scraped them with ah sharp rock or eeled the bark off with their teeth. After this procedure the lightweight stems were used as thread, rimhoops, or foundations for baskets, someas fine as flour sieves. Leaves have a reliable fall color turning pale golden and the winter bare branches are horizontally teired and pogodalike HT: 6 to 20 feet. LVS: winter decidous. FLWS: dangling mali catkinds, late winter; female flowers insignificant. SMR WTR: deriodic deep watering. PROP: Layering; nuts(stratify) EXP: Shade California hazelnut may be regarede as earither a small tree or large shrub; it is amenable to training either way. To keep one or a few trunks, prune out the suckers. Hazel sends out long tiers of horizontal branches, giving it an effect much like that of flowering dogwood but with a very differnt leaf pattern. Hazel's deep green leaves are soft, broudly heart shapted, with jagged fine and coarse teeth along the margins. The light coming thought the canopy in summer is a beautifull sight, for one sees layer upon layer, tier upon tier of green. Although bare in winter, by winter's end hazel's branches wear long dangling chains of male flowers waving in the breezes and (look hard) tiny female flowers, the three feathery, red stigmas extended to receive pollen. Soon new leaves follow, but you must wait until summer's end for matur nuts. Unfortunately, most hazels bear a sparing crop of nuts, and most of the sounds ones are quickly gathered by squarrels. California hazelnuts grows along the margins of wet forest from the coast redwoods up into the yellow pine belt of the sierra. A fast grower, it thrives where it has consiant summer water and light filtering through the fringes of tall trees. Plant it in the background of your woodland garden for a beautifull green wall, or along a stream or behind a pond with simular shrubs of similar requirements' western azalea (rhododendron occidental), rosebay (Rhododendron macrophyllum), huckleberries (Vaccinium spp.) or thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus). Kit was comprised of a lightly reworked pressure cooker (temp gague and vent were both add-ons. As an added bonus, I think the instructions warn against overpressurization as the relief will blow and take the thermometer with it. I made moonshine from scratch -once-, geared myself to do it a couple more times with fancy yeasts (== champagne yeast, for max potency, liquid and ordered fresh for best activity. Never used, sadly. The end result was eventually charcoal filtered into reasonableness. Anymore I only use distilled wine. My conversion experience was being left with an ungodly amount of liquor and wine after a party. Burning it through the cooker made for a nice floral batch and has been the model for other cooks in later days. In the United States distilling alcohol is illegal, which is unfortunate as there are both reasonable culinary experiments and achievements to be made with relatively pure base liquor typically unavailable here. Without too much difficulty factory-safe and once-taxed wine (the largest component in home alcohol has always been to what extent the tax man is offended). Home wine and beer production were made legal some time ago but the everyone remembers the multitude of social, governmental and health ills some of the old productions generated. No gamma GND masking, because it seems that by the time I get the sky the right shade there's too much cellulite noise in the sky. Much like taking an underexposed night shot with a CMOS camera, taking the raw file and processing that, and pushing it up 2 stops or so, you see all the CMOS pattern noise. Well with any digital sensor you will see noise under those conditions. But I am not talking about an underexposed night shot here, I'm talking about a shot taken in bright sunlight. How could this be "underexposed"? Well I guess that it could be, technically. No matter how bright the ambient light is it is always possible to underexpose the shot. So here I could only recover the midtones and shadows with gamma-reduction. There just isn't much there in the highlights. Odd, but true. DxO 6.3 of course can't do much with this (the original), I suppose that Bibble can't do much with it either. So yes, I think that this calls for some "test shots" taken in the DC area, as much like this as I can find. Before riding 250 miles and spending $50 to shoot these again. In late November. The next roll at least will be shot with the exposure nailed at 0eV. I note in passing that -1eV would work fine for a digital camera on just about any scene, at worst you'd have to push it a little, at best it would allow the camera to capture the whole DR without blowing out the highlights or shadows. My old 1MP cellphone might put a yellow cast on the white clouds there but still would come up with a decent overall result. I guess my point is that it is really hard to blow a shot like this with a digital camera, yet somehow with film and all my photographic experience, I managed to do just that. Even after coming up here twice with disposable cameras and getting similar results. Intriguing. ...is it the film, plain and simple? We will see. But I know one thing, if we can't put a mid-level Nikon SLR on 0eV evaluative and get good results with a Tamron zoom shot wide-angle at F8 aperture-priority with ISO200 film on a wide-angle daylight shot taken from 2500 feet on a partly-cloudy day, developed at CVS? Something is seriously wrong. Either CVS is utterly, totally botching-up the development or the film simply can't handle this sort of dynamic-range. But sure, I'll shoot it at 0eV and try CVS again. I should also try another developer, but I really doubt that it's the developing. This would be a shame because it is really cheap and easy to shoot this camera and obviously the shots don't have any Bayer-blur or low-pass filtering. backyard tragedy, or the bark heard round the yard, or gambels massacre! I have a sad tale to tell. Last night we went out for Thai, and when we came home Petey (our mixed terrier mutt) was quite excited...we figured he'd been barking at something outside the wall, as he commonly does. However this morning, I noticed a couple Gambels Quail continually atop our block wall. And while watering the garden, Petey was nosing around under a shrub as if on the hunt. The mama Quail just above him on the wall would not leave. uh oh. I put Petey in the house and sealed his doggie door. Hunted around the shrubs hoping to spot a chick who couldn't get over the wall to rejoin his family. Nothing. Eventually I gave up, then was tending the pool, when I found a tiny quail chick near the leaf catcher... I cried. Figured Petey chased it into the pool where it drowned. But I knew this chick was not very old, too small to have come into the yard, had to have been born here. So, I started looking again and found 7 more dead babies all in the pool pump enclosure, and a small ground indentation in the corner behind the motor and filter, their ground nest. A full blown nature massacre. I was heart broken and declared our once beloved pet, an evil monster. I cleaned up the remains, and noticed the parent quails still scurrying atop the wall and calling out warningly... could any of these tiny babies have survived? What a large clutch, this must have been. There was no way for them out of our yard at this tiny size, since the drain holes were full of rocks! Dear hubby and I opened up several of them, on the chance that the parents were trying to move any remaining chicks to a safer place. Lo and behold 2 had managed to escape the slaughter! This picture is of one. He is no more than 2 inches tall, the other one scurried under the wall before I could get its photo. It was a paler, lighter colored baby, probably a female. I'm glad a couple made it, am still mad at the dog and wonder why the parents dared nest in a yard that has a dog notorious for chasing the birds in it! A few more shots in my comments. Mama scurried them to the wash behind our yard, I hope they are safe now. Blue-Green Jewel A tropical bird perches within the rainforest exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. The enclosure includes a bottom level walkway beneath a pool, allowing visitors a fishes-eye view of the canopy of green leaves and sunlight above. Undergravel Filter - 15 or 20H Gallon - 24 in. x 12 in. The Perfect-a-Flow Undergravel Filter is a biological filtration system for fresh or saltwater aquariums. The filter circulates water through the gravel bed and oxygenates it for beneficial bacteria growth. The slots on the filter plate have been designed to draw water evenly over the entire plate from front to back and left to right. The high tube connectors are molded into the filter plates to offer a secure grip onto the one-inch diameter lift tubes to keep the tubes from being knocked out by fish and preventing gravel from falling under the filter plate. There are four tube holders and caps. The Perfect-A-Flo air stoneprovides a flow of fine bubbles. A 3/16 inch ridged tube connects to the air diffuser inside the uplift tube and will attach to airline tubing at the top of the uplift tube. When using an airpump and airstones use two uplift tubes per plate. The fish protector is molded right into each elbow to prevent fish from entering the uplift tubes.
