Miles' First Rain in the Face

I was just getting Miles settled in his stroller for a walk when it began to rain a bit. I was going to carry on regardless, but suddenly it was a downpour with little icy bits. I grabbed him and ran for the garage to put away the stroller. He had the strangest look on his face! Here he is just as we got in the house.

365 - Average Saturday

365 - Average Saturday

Yup, today is Valentine's Day, but it is just an average Saturday to me. We don't really celebrate because I'm not a fan - I guess you could say I'm protesting it. My issue is that people should do nice things for their loved ones throughout the year, not just because Hallmark says so. Now, next year may be a different story because my son will be old enough to play along in the fun. I will probably give in and use it as an excuse to do fun little heart-themed projects with him.

So, this morning, after finally reuniting with my trusty heart rate monitor, I set off with my chubby dog to run a few miles. My training for the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in April is going smoothly and I was happy to see I burned a healthy 614 calories in 50 minutes. Not too shabby.

Year 4~Day 148 +119/365 AND Day 1244: Judy and Belk

I went to the fitness center and walked on the treadmill for 40 minutes which equals 2 miles. Then I went to Office Max and got another pad to go underneath my computer chair in my home office which I have installed all by myself. Belk's had advertised a sale that begins today. I knew I need some brown dress pants. I couldn't decide whether to get the 14P Average or 16P Average. I finally got the larger size because I wanted to feel comfortable. Oh yeah, and I did pick out a couple of tops and jackets/sweaters that can be used when I'm traveling or for church.

I'm happy that my weight is continuing to go down since I've been exercising and eating less calories "most" days.

Bonnie Dundee Potatoes

Bonnie Dundee Potatoes

These are my first potatoes harvested this year.
Bonnie Dundee are a famous old Scottish variety that are a deep red skinned round potato with creamy
flesh which make this potato ideal for boiling and salads.
I think it is unlikely to find this variety in the supermarket.
These were dug out of the container I grow them in and were boiled, smothered in butter and eaten within one hour of being harvested and believe me, they were delicious.
The smoothering in butter is because I have lost too much weight recently and I am supposed to be on a high calorie diet.

God's gift to the Irish

God's gift to the Irish

As I type this, we're a week away from St. Patrick's Day. Nothing says home to me more than a pint of Guinness and a bowl of lamb stew. Followed with a chaser of Black Bush.

Anyway. Don't let it's dark, ruby blackness fool you - there's only 170 calories and 5.7 grams of carbs per pint. And at 4% alcohol, it's considered a 'light' beer. So don't be a prude. Drink up!

Lampreys! Lampetra planeri nesting (video1).

Lampreys! Lampetra planeri nesting (video1).

Best viewed very small - not the best quality now the video format's converted. Lampreys mating and nest building! 11th March 2011 - a brook beside the River Itchen at St Cross, just south of Winchester, Hampshire.

In the first few seconds look for the couple at the top mating. Then watch the one that leaves the group to bring back a stone to the nest. A second stone is brought before the clip ends. And look in rivers and streams for your own lampreys about now - it's an amazing sight if you catch them!

A profound joy to see these wonderful creatures. Five European Brook Lampreys - Lampetra planeri. They have a fascinating life cycle. The blind hatchlings float down stream and embed themselves in burrows in silt where they spend about three to seven years maturing, filtering detritus for food. When ready, they metamorphose into sighted adults and emerge from their burrows. This happens in the autumn. From then till early spring they live a secretive life, swimming upstream by night and hiding under stones by day. Once they've reached a suitable gravel spawning ground, in small groups they build a nest - a shallow depression in the stream bed. They build the nest by moving stones, lifting them with their round sucker-like mouths. They are able to move stones twice their body weight. Spawning happens in daylight in March or April, once the water temperature reaches about 10C. The females attach themselves to stones with their suckers and the males squirm vigorously, releasing sperm. The eggs are attached to stones in the nest, hatching within the month. Each female lays about 1,500 eggs. After spawning the lampreys die. Adult Brook Lampreys are unable to feed so they gradually loose weight during their journey upstream.

I sat entranced and watched eggs being fertilised and lampreys carefully moving small stones into the nesting pool and rearranging them. Two days later there wasn't a sign of the creatures, though the nest they'd made was still visible if you knew what to look for. A little stripy predatory fish was at the spot.

Day 46 - Cheese Rolling

Day 46 - Cheese Rolling

Day 46: Cheese Rolling!!! One of the crazy things that happen every year in Gloucestershire. People throwing themselves after a 7-8lb round piece of Double Gloucester cheese. This was one of the few shots I managed to catch the cheese and the people as the cheese can reach up to 70 miles an hour. It was pouring with rain and really muddy but it was so much fun to watch :D

74.365 Got Not Milk?

Four words: bowel preparation oral purgative.

Is that too much information? If so, look away now.

Yes I know the camera focus is on the chicken broth tetra pac but even if the focus was on my face it wouldn't have been clear anyway because of the six-pack of Gatorade balanced/wobbling on my head. I took twelve photos but it felt like more. At photo eight you would see a wardrobe change because between taking my hand away from the Gatorade on my head and reaching for the remote I spilled the revolting white orange-flavoured liquid torture on my sweater.

I am only 35 but my family doctor has been pushing me to get my innards checked for a few years now. My mother died of colon cancer at the much too young age of 57 so I've got that shit (an irreverent but somehow appropriate way of putting it) happening in my family. Most of the other photos show a more grumpy face but I chose this one because my current situation is pretty hilarious.

In the foreground you see homemade iced tea. I can't drink the red stuff that T was so kind to buy me this morning. The chicken broth tastes better than I thought it would: I tried it just after dumping the beef broth (top left) which was just too revolting. Timmie's coffee this morning and I am currently drinking (another) coffee (black), blue Gatorade and white cranberry juice simultaneously. The mango juice didn't make it into the photo because it has been taken out of the line-up.

Drat. I have to pee.

After which I will probably move onto some lots of ginger ale.
Gotta love a high volume liquid diet!

Be kind to your colon.
Sometimes it's a matter of life and death.
Colon cancer is a really crappy way to go.

No one said you had to read all of it.

I love Diet Coke. I drink too much and then it gives me a headache but I love it.

Malibu is the only alcoholic drink I actually enjoy. It doesn't get me drunk, which I like and thats means I can enjoy drinking it. This bottle will last me quite a few months. I've had it since the beginning of May.

Ben & Jerry's is my saviour. I was good this week and bought a sorbet rather than a very fattening ice cream.

God I am such a woman.

Minna - Emergency Workout

Minna - Emergency Workout

"Lose weight and tone your body in just six weeks!" claims the back cover of Emergency Workout. Don't expect to look like gorgeous Minna Lessig, former Ms. Fitness USA and National Fitness champion, in that time, but do expect to have fun getting into shape with these two well-designed, high-energy, 30-minute workouts.
Remember the pre-hip-hop era of aerobic dance when we were doing cha cha, salsa, mambo, grapevines, and hip-swinging, feel-good combinations that kept our heart rates and moods up without taxing our minds terribly much? That's what Lessig gives us in the aerobic segment. The dance moves are just challenging enough to be fun and give us a sense of accomplishment, without being a major learning endeavor. Lessig teaches the routines smoothly and expertly, a move at a time. Her two female assistants, their faces animated, seem to be having a great time, too.
The second workout is a non-stop weight segment using dumbbells. Lessig's routine is an interesting mix of combination moves, such as biceps curls with lunges, or leg extensions with lateral raises, sometimes involving balance. The only problem is that you have no time to change weights between muscle groups, so you have to go light. Each workout has its own warm-up and cooldown, so you can alternate them on different days, or blitz yourself by doing the whole hour. A sample 1,100- to 1,200-calorie diet menu is included. --Joan Price

Sarus Crane- Courtship

Sarus Crane- Courtship

Courtship and breeding
Sarus Cranes are known for their loud trumpeting calls. The loud trumpeting calls are like in other cranes possible by the elongated trachea that form coils within the sternal region.[15] Pairs may indulge in spectacular displays of calling in unison and posturing. These include "dancing" movements that are performed both during and outside the breeding season and involve a short series of jumping and bowing or going in circles. Dancing may also be shown as a displacement activity when the nest or young are threatened.[6] They breed during the monsoons in India (from July to October although there may be a second brood[10] and there are records of breeding at other times of the year-May[16] and February[17][18][19]),[5] and with the onset of the wet season in Australia. They build a large nests, platforms made of reeds and vegetation in wet marshes or paddy fields.[20] The platform nests can be more than two metres in diameter and nearly a metre high.[21] Pairs shows high fidelity to the nest site often reusing nests over as many as five years.[22] The clutch is 1 or 2 eggs (rarely 3) which are incubated by both sexes[23] for about 31 days (range 27-35 days). Eggs are chalky white and weigh about 240 grams.[6]The eggshells are removed by the parents after the chicks hatch either by carrying away the fragments or by swallowing them.[24] Chicks stay along with their parents for a long duration of more than three months.[

The Sarus Crane, Grus antigone is a large crane that is a resident breeding bird with disjunct populations that are found in parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia. Standing at a height of about 1.8 m,[3] the tallest of the flying birds, they are conspicuous and iconic[4] species of open marshlands. Their numbers have declined greatly in the last century and it has been estimated that the current population is only 10% or even just 2.5% of the numbers that existed in the 1850s. The stronghold of the species is in India, where it is traditionally revered and has adapted to live in close proximity with humans. The species has been extirpated in many parts of the large range.

Adults birds are very large with grey wings and body; a bare red head and part of the upper neck; a whitish crown; and a long dark pointed bill. In flight, the long neck is held straight, unlike a heron that folds it back, and the black wing tips can be seen; their long red or pink legs trail behind them. They have a grey ear covert patch, a reddish iris and a greenish grey bill. Juveniles have a pinkish base to the bill and the head is fully feathered and grey.[5] The bare head and neck has red skin that is brighter during the breeding season. The skin is rough and covered by papillae and a narrow area around behind the head is covered by black bristly feathers. The sexes do not differ in colour although males are larger on average than females; Indian males can attain a maximum height of approximately 200 cm (6.6 ft), with a wingspan of 250 cm (8.5 ft), making them the world's tallest living flying bird. The average weight of nominate race individuals is 6.8-7.8 kg, while five adult sharpii averaged 8.4 kg.[6] Across the range, weight can vary from 5 to 12 kg (11-26 lbs), height typically from 115 to 167 cm (45-69 in) and the wingspan from 220 to 280 cm (87-110 in). Birds from Australia tend to be smaller than birds from the north.

There were about an estimated 15-20,000 mature Sarus Cranes left in the wild in 2009.[1] The Indian population is less than 10,000 birds but is the strongest population. They are considered sacred and the birds are traditionally left unharmed[32] and in many areas they are unafraid of humans. They used to be found on occasion in Pakistan, but not seen since the late 1980s. The population has however declined.[1] Estimates of the global population suggest that the population in 2000 was at best about 10% and at the worst just 2.5% of the numbers that existed in 1850.[33] Many farmers in India believe that these crane damage standing crops,[34] particularly rice, although studies show that direct feeding on rice grains resulted in losses amounting to less than 1 percent and trampling could account for grain loss of about 0.4-15 kilograms.[35] The attitude of farmers tends to be positive in spite of these damages and this has helped in conserving the species within agricultural areas. Compensating farmers for crop losses has been suggested as a measure that may help.[25] The Australian population is higher than 5,000 birds and may be increasing,[8] however, the Southeast Asian subspecies has been decimated by war and habitat modification and destruction (such as intensive agriculture and draining of wetlands) and by the mid-20th century had disappeared from large parts of its range which once stretched up to southern China; some 1500–2000 birds are left in several fragmented subpopulations. The little-known Philippine population became extinct in the

As a species, the Sarus crane is classified as Vulnerable (A2cde + 3cde). This means that the global population has declined by about a third since 1980, and is expected to continue to do so until the late 2010s. Threats constitute habitat destruction and/or degradation, hunting and collecting, as well as environmental pollution and possibly diseases or competing species. Inbreeding effects should be monitored in the Australian population.[8]

The species has been extirpated in Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. Reintroduction programs planned in Thailand have made use of birds from Cambodia

Ruby's Diary: Reflections on All I've Lost and Gained

When television viewing audiences first met Ruby Gettinger, a mild-mannered, sweet-natured, Southern-food addicted Sunday school teacher, her weight was hovering near 500 pounds. As the ad campaign for the show says, Ruby doesn?t know how she got to this weight, but she knows its killing her. Having been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and told by doctors that she would die if she continued to carry all that weight, Ruby is changing her life to save it. Her honesty, optimism and genuine commitment to uncover all the underlying causes of her addiction--mental, physical and emotional--are inspiring millions of others in the process. So too is her progress. (She?s now down to 360 pounds!)
While Style?s cameras have been following Ruby?s personal journey as she sheds the weight, gets healthier, battles discrimination daily, and struggles to recover lost childhood memories, these excerpts, taken from the journal Ruby carries with her everywhere on the show, include her most intimate reflections, insights and discoveries regarding her life "before" and "during" this incredibly transformative experience. It also includes her fears, hopes and dreams for life after her goal is realized. In addition, the book will feature thoughts from the doctors, dieticians, trainers, therapists, friends and family supporting Ruby?s mission. 03 Nov 2009 - Effective Self-Improvement (Part 1)?

03 Nov 2009 - Effective Self-Improvement (Part 1)?

Whether it’s your career path, your financial affairs, your weight, your substance addiction, or your lovelife, taking the first steps towards improvement can be tough. Often the change is superficial and temporary because you have not managed to internalise the motivation to improve.

Here are some ways you can create steady, enduring change; effective, holistic self-improvement that can only come with truly understanding your aspirations and aligning your values with your goals.

One of the first mistakes we make when trying to actuate positive change is taking too big a bite. We’re desperate to see results and end up suffering from indigestion. To avoid this, follow the old adage — take it slow and steady. Evolving one day at a time helps you keep your eye on the future while keeping you rooted in the present. Minor but regular changes keep you motivated. Accelerating too rapidly though only increases the chances of crashing out.

Down to its nuts and bolts, changing our lives is really changing our habits. Improving your career prospects, for example, involves developing the relevant skills sets, fattening up the piggy bank involves saving more, achieving your ideal weight requires altering your consumption and fitness patterns.

But changing a habit is more than an act of will. Choosing that lemon drop instead of a cigarette may be simple enough on a good day in the presence of your smoke-loathing girlfriend. But what about after losing that account you worked so hard on? Or when being called out to smoke by friends after a few beers at the pub?

To effectively change habits, you have to understand why and how much you want your goal. Your values, thoughts, actions, even your spiritual being, have to be aligned with that goal. That is what I mean by “holistic” change. The mind, body and soul have to work together as one.

It’s not enough thinking “I want to lose weight”. Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to look better? Why do you want to look better? Is itto gain more friends? Is itto find a life partner? But dig deeper... wouldn’t good health be more fulfilling? Or increased self-confidence? What about having more energy?

You have to peel away the layers to reveal the core of your motivation. Only then will you find the commitment and conviction to stay focused on your goals.

Join me in the next programme for more effective self-improvement tips.

My Seven Truths.

1. I have a hard time with life. I constantly think i'm starting to understand it then it throws me off... again and again. We are constantly changing and growing as mankind. Something i've always wanted is to just UNDERSTAND and have ANSWERS to how life works, what is right/wrong, where is the common understanding between us all, etc etc.

2. I'm a digger... i won't stop digging untill i find an answer or get what i want.

3. I have a great desire to make people feel... it drives me crazy when i see people without motivation or passion. Those people are definately missing out on some seriously amazing things and i know now that i cannot be in a relationship with someone who is lacking passion, depth or motivation.

4. I believe that my job in this world is to help people. In whatever way i can. But personally. Helping people mentally intrigues me most.

5. I used to have horrible body image problems. Though it has become better... i still think about not eating some days. So i can lose weight.

6. I think it's easier to be negative about yourself and life. Then it is to be positive.

7. I envy those who don't speak much, but when they do... it's amazing and so intelligent and deep and heartfelt. You just love to hear them speak when they do because you feel they have intense information and thoughts to share. I'd like to be like that one day.

I truly believe that this is where i belong.

Bean & Lettuce Tostada

I have a healthy recipe book with easy to do ideas.
Ingredients: Tostada, Lettuce, Beans(freshly made, not from a can), Cheese(I used mozzarella), Sour Cream(low fat), Salsa(Again, freshly made).
Last night I had this for dinner but I added guacamole which makes it even tastier. Too bad my mom only gave me 3 avocados.
Nutrition: It's high in fiber and protein. Only about 400 calories and 3 grams of fat. Sodium should be low unless you use canned beans and salsa.

[181/365] Crazy, Beautiful Life.

So, today I was sick....still. Woke up, went to class, then my best friend Cody came over to bring me some hot white chocolate drink and some McDonalds fries. (So healthy, I know.) We ate for a little bit, then took a few pictures. Because obviously, sick or not, I have to take pictures.

I'm stupid though, because I took Nyquil last night, and had coffee this morning. I think that did something WEIRD to me, because I'm jittery as CRAP but I feel like falling over and passing out. :/

STUPID MEDICATION AND COFFEE. >:|

Today was freezing cold too. Grr, we went straight from summer to winter it seems. :[

Well, I'm going to go and play Half Life 2 on XBOX then try to go to bed around 8. I have to open tomorrow, and I really don't feel that I'll have the energy to do it unless I go to sleep soon. :/

BOOO. I went to my last day of class today. Tuesday I turn in a test, and Wednesday I have to take a test then I'm DONE. THANK THE LORD! :D

Anyways, I'm really not getting better. I've had a cough for three weeks and it's just getting worse.

No QOTD today. :[ I'm running out of questions.

Healthy Origins, Phase 2, Starch Neutralizer, 500 mg, 180 Capsules

Healthy Origins, Phase 2 (Phaseolamin 2250) is an amazing, non-stimulant, all-natural nutritional ingredient that is derived from the white kidney bean. It is the first clinically-proven, standardized extract for "neutralizing" starch calories found in your favorite foods such as potatoes, breads, pasta, rice, corn, and crackers. Phase 2 is a safe, yet powerful, nutritional supplement which allows you to enjoy those foods that you love without all the calories. Product Reviews as Follows: Product Reviews as Follows: September 13, 2009 From Washington: "I am a 39 year old female type 1 diabetic with kidney disease, so I am using this in combination with bromelain (to digest just protein) and it works great. I get to block alot of carbs, and lower blood sugars, but still digest the hard-to-handle protein that is so hard on my kidneys. I have been taking this carb blocker for about 3 months now, and have lost about 10 pounds. Will definitely keep buying it!" December 02, 2009 By Deborah Clark from New Jersey: "Good stuff. I take this along with raw apple cider vinegar for added assurance and it keeps me in ketosis not matter what I eat. I have also lost 14 pounds in a month using this supplement. Let me also add that nothing else have ever given me these results." August 07, 2009 From Tennessee: "Blocks up to 80% of starch eaten at a meal and reduces fat absorption by up to 30% at a meal. It is the first clinically-proven all-natural standardized extract derived from the white kidney bean."

The Ol` Hairy Eyeball

The Ol` Hairy Eyeball

I got a phone call at 7:45 a.m. on Christmas Eve from the vet. He said that Remy`s blood and urine tests had come back and that he was ready to discuss the results with me. Remy`s Urine Glucose levels were so high, that they were off the vet`s chart. He said that in 15 years of practice, he`d never seen feline urine glucose levels as high as Remy`s. However, his Blood Glucose levels were only .2 above the high end of normal. So. Perhaps Remy might have Atypical Diabetes. Or...he might have Kidney Disease, and these levels are the first signs. Or...he might have a virulent Kidney Infection. The vet sent Remy`s samples to a big lab in Toronto for a Fructosamine Test. This test will definitively say whether or not Remy has Diabetes. The *&%$/*! Lab is closed over Christmas. So, I picked up some antibiotics for Remy in case it`s his kidneys that are causing the problems. Now, we`ve got to wait four days or so to hear back from the lab. Until then we`re trying to keep Remy hydrated and fed as best we can. All of the kitties are being smothered with love and attention from everyone.

November 4 2007 day 24 - It's all about the numbers

November 4 2007 day 24 - It's all about the numbers

Diabetes is a disease associated with numbers. Unlike other conditions that require weekly or monthly monitoring, diabetes requires the constant monitoring of blood glucose levels. Apart from glucose levels, other metrics like renal performance, endocrine status, hepatic enzyme levels, cardiac performance, and body vitals like weight need to be measured. Rapid loss of body weight, coupled with dehydration, extreme thirst, constant urination and fatigue are all symptoms of diabetes mellitus.
I check my weight everyday to ensure that I'm not losing or gaining too much weight. Losing weight improves insulin sensitivity in some individuals. Being 6 feet 3 inches tall, I try and keep my weight between 180 and 185 pounds, thus ensuring a normal BMI.

There is no cure for diabetes, yet.

My elaborate journal collection

My elaborate journal collection

I have over 15 (completed) journals from high school through college. These are a few of my favorite covers.

Most of them chronicle an 8-year relationship I had with my first love. At one point in my life, these were the most important thing I owned. I wrote about every emotion (sadness, anger, happiness, bliss), every moment, often by candle light in the wee hours of the night.

I used to tell my closest friends, if anything ever happened to me, please make sure the boy gets these. It's funny to me that I haven't thought about their destiny in the past 10 years and if anyone would ever want to read them besides me.

Looking back at what I've written is always a magical and enlightening experience. Emotions were so raw and intense. They're more distant now. I'm not sure if it's age, wisdom, apathy or all of the above.

My how far I've come.

Soundtrack: Sarah McLachlan's Possession

home made journals

The two ratty looking journals on the right are made by me. Handbound into fake leather covers with dental floss. Very amateur but it works. Both are stacked next to the Moleskines and Ciak books for comparison. The top book is made with Astroparche Natural color parchment with a vellum finish. The bottom one is made with Astrobrights Black color text paper with a smooth finish. Both are 320 pages with five signatures.

Now you may ask why did I make a journal with black paper? That's just silly. Well it is, but I'm using that as an Inspirational quotes book. I'm using white gel pens in it. Too bad I don't know of any company that makes white ink for fountain pens. I'll have some interior pics later.
