Gallows Beach - Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia.

About

I spent the weekend down in Coffs Harbour, I need to re-shoot this some time, as I'm not 100% happy. Because its a beach and contains moving water, I had to shoot this hand held and very quickly! (which causes its own problems)

This was taken mid afternoon, and the misty sky was caused by the recent dust storms.... I love the green water here, and I wish I had a ND400 while I was here!

Gallows beach is very popular with the local surfers, I managed to snag some nice action shots here, good fun. Way back when, I use to surf a lot, its a great sport, just you and the wave, nothing else can get in the way.

About Coffs Harbour, NSW

Legend has it that the first Europeans to the area were escaped convicts taking refuge on Muttonbird Island. Timber getters were the first to settle in the area in 1841. The busy Port was frequented by up to 450 ships a year until the Carywell was wrecked in 1865. The Harbour's navigation hazards were confirmed by the loss of the Carywell and lead to a shipping boycott of the harbour until the construction of a lighthouse in 1878. The town was originally named 'Korff's Harbour' by John Korff in 1847. It was renamed Coffs Harbour when the town site was reserved in 1861.

Timber cutting remained the most important industry well into the 1900's, flourishing after the completion of the Jetty in 1892. Gold mining, fruit growing, dairying, and sugar cane farming also became popular, although many of these earlier ventures failed. Fijian Bananas were introduced by Herman Reick in 1881 and the banana growing industry took off in the early 1900's as the population swelled during the construction of the railway and the harbour breakwall. Banana growing gained further momentum in the 1920's as the plantations to the north were wiped out by disease.

With the arrival of the railway in 1915 and the completion of the link through to Sydney in 1923, the tourism industry in Coffs Harbour developed rapidly. Today Coffs is one of the most popular destinations on the New South Wales north coast.

The Solitary Islands, which dot the ocean along the Coffs Coast, were named by none other than Captain James Cook as far back as 1770. Captain Cook noted and named the islands on 15 May of that year, when he sailed past what would later become known as Coffs Harbour.

This is a photo of an attendant at the entrance of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne, Australia,
The Waterwall at the entrance marks the beginning of the Water Trail. The Waterwall runs separately to the moat system, with its own water holding tank and treatment plant. Rain water is pumped from underground tanks into the Waterwall holding tank and then through a treatment plant to the Waterwall head. The water cascades down the glass, before flowing back into the holding tank to repeat the cycle. The constant flow creates a natural filter between the bustle of the city and the calm seclusion and ambience of the Gallery.

At the time when the gallery opened, Victoria was an independent colony for just ten years, but in the wake of the Victorian gold rush, it was easily the richest part of Australia, and Melbourne the largest city. Generous gifts from wealthy citizens, notably industrialist Alfred Felton, made it possible for the National Gallery to start purchasing large collections of overseas works from both old and modern masters. It currently holds 63,000 works of art.

The National Gallery of Victoria is an art gallery and museum in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1861, it is the oldest and the largest public art gallery in Australia. The main gallery is located in St Kilda Road, in the heart of the Melbourne Arts Precinct of Southbank, with a branch gallery at Federation Square.
