Shrine to the Virgen de la Candelaria
During our last week in Bolivia we spent 2 days touring Lake Titicaca. Our tour bus brought us to a small town on its shores called Copacabana, named for Our Lady of Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. The more familiar Brazilian city borrowed its name from this historic town.
The town is most well known for its Christian pilgrimage shrine of the Virgen de la Candelaria, also called the ‘Dark Virgin.’ Before the Christian use of the site there was an Inca Temple of the Sun, from which native pilgrims sailed to the sacred islands of the Sun and the Moon.
The present cathedral, completed in 1805, is the most visited pilgrimage site in Bolivia. It was built over a pre-existing sacred space where Aymarans used to worship. Now, every Sunday, a priest performs automobile blessings here. Drivers decorate their cars with colored paper decorations and flowers and spray them with champagne. The priest blesses the vehicles and flicks holy water over them with a brush.
(This was taken with a circular polarized filter that turned the sky a deeper shade of blue. Shifting the color hues after desaturating made for more dramatic contrast)
Death Proof #2
Why
With the best of intent, this photo documents
my love towards all the majors and arse-lickers
who are more concerned about filling their town
with cars than with people,
who are more concerned about giving our squares
away to automobile manufacturers rather than
to young artists and children.
Thank you.

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, the driest state in Australia, and our water is from the River Murray, downstream of the Eastern states. In previous drought years, we have been last to get served with water, and had very strict water rationing in place. Before we installed our filter, we were totally used to our tap water with its distinctive taste, which we swore was lovely. Now, of course filtered water tastes way better ...

life after college
One week from now and I'll have been back here, Baraboo, WI 53913, the same city I've occupied for 19 years straight and alternating seasons for the past 4; here, 1011 6th St, the same address my father lived at when he was a kid; here, the same room I where I'd wage dream world wars against my little brother who slept on the bottom bunk; here, right here, the middle of all the clutter 23 years accumulate. Sifting through this amorphous mass of physical and emotional junk has taken up much of the time I don't spend sleeping to avoid the perpetual boredom this city exudes. I need a job.
Mexican Jumping Beans. Strange. I found this amongst the junk; I learned that my sister's friend gave them to her. I wonder how long this one lived after if finally freed itself from the bean only find it was stuck in a slightly bigger one. It's clear, there's a world outside, but how to get to it? Maybe it never thought about getting to it. Maybe it crawled out of the bean and thought, "Wow, this is so cool! I can't believe I'm seeing all of this stuff." And that was the world for him. Until he realized he had no food. And no mate. But then maybe he didn't know what they were. How could he? he never ate, so hunger was normal. He never knew other bugs, so he never knew loneliness. There are a lot of people who do just that at some point - hatch then accept what is around them as what is, and because they never know anything else, they think what they've got is the best. Or maybe they become cognizant of the world outside the box and long to join it, but don't know how to get out and after a brief struggle they give up and content themselves in the box. Make do with what you have.
I bet this brincadore, because of instinct, knew hunger and tried to satiate himself on the dry beans and even its pupil casing. I bet it knew lust and longed to complete its reproductive purposes. This knowledge made it conscious of the world outside the clear plastic box, it made it dream of the other side, it filled its starved hallucinations with instincutual images other bincadores and beans. The friction generated enough heat to form other emotions; anger, envy, frustration. All actions outside the box brought it closer to insanity, but thanks to their short life span, it probably died before that set in.
How to get out of the box...?
After I fumbled with the beans I left on my desk. Shortly there after I heard a slight *tick*. I thought it was my speakers. I turned off my Battles and waited. The *tick* came again and I was able to place its origin as the small, clear plastic box that still housed the corpse of the lonely bincadore. Another slight *tick*, long pause, *tick* *tick*, silence. It hasn't made a sound since.
153 years old ?
In Brislington church cemetery there is a grave which states that a Thomas Newman was 153 years old when he died. TWO mysteries surround the grave of Thomas Newman. Firstly, the inscription states that he was 153 years old when he died in 1542, but the record for the oldest person we know of is 120.
So did a local wag, or even the stonemason, add the figure one to the 53 way back in the 16th century and nobody noticed, or did Thomas really live to that great age?
Secondly, the gravestone in St Luke's states: 'This stone was new faced in the year 1771 to perpetuate the great age of the deceased.' ut the greater mystery is that there is another grave of another Thomas Newman, also aged 153, in Bridlington, Yorkshire, with almost the same inscription. So, is the Brislington stone the one that disappeared from Bridlington hundreds of years ago? Or was a headstone put in each space because nobody was sure where Thomas lived?
But would people living in 16th-century England know that there was both a Brislington and Bridlington hundreds of miles apart? Could there have been two Thomas Newmans who both lived to 153? I doubt if the truth will ever be known.
The celebrated farmer Thomas Parr, who was buried in Westminster Abbey in the 17th century, claimed to be 152! - When the average life span for a male was only 30.?

Gallows Beach - Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia.
About
I spent the weekend down in Coffs Harbour, I need to re-shoot this some time, as I'm not 100% happy. Because its a beach and contains moving water, I had to shoot this hand held and very quickly! (which causes its own problems)
This was taken mid afternoon, and the misty sky was caused by the recent dust storms.... I love the green water here, and I wish I had a ND400 while I was here!
Gallows beach is very popular with the local surfers, I managed to snag some nice action shots here, good fun. Way back when, I use to surf a lot, its a great sport, just you and the wave, nothing else can get in the way.

About Coffs Harbour, NSW
Legend has it that the first Europeans to the area were escaped convicts taking refuge on Muttonbird Island. Timber getters were the first to settle in the area in 1841. The busy Port was frequented by up to 450 ships a year until the Carywell was wrecked in 1865. The Harbour's navigation hazards were confirmed by the loss of the Carywell and lead to a shipping boycott of the harbour until the construction of a lighthouse in 1878. The town was originally named 'Korff's Harbour' by John Korff in 1847. It was renamed Coffs Harbour when the town site was reserved in 1861.
Timber cutting remained the most important industry well into the 1900's, flourishing after the completion of the Jetty in 1892. Gold mining, fruit growing, dairying, and sugar cane farming also became popular, although many of these earlier ventures failed. Fijian Bananas were introduced by Herman Reick in 1881 and the banana growing industry took off in the early 1900's as the population swelled during the construction of the railway and the harbour breakwall. Banana growing gained further momentum in the 1920's as the plantations to the north were wiped out by disease.
With the arrival of the railway in 1915 and the completion of the link through to Sydney in 1923, the tourism industry in Coffs Harbour developed rapidly. Today Coffs is one of the most popular destinations on the New South Wales north coast.
The Solitary Islands, which dot the ocean along the Coffs Coast, were named by none other than Captain James Cook as far back as 1770. Captain Cook noted and named the islands on 15 May of that year, when he sailed past what would later become known as Coffs Harbour.
Waterman
This is a photo of an attendant at the entrance of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne, Australia,
The Waterwall at the entrance marks the beginning of the Water Trail. The Waterwall runs separately to the moat system, with its own water holding tank and treatment plant. Rain water is pumped from underground tanks into the Waterwall holding tank and then through a treatment plant to the Waterwall head. The water cascades down the glass, before flowing back into the holding tank to repeat the cycle. The constant flow creates a natural filter between the bustle of the city and the calm seclusion and ambience of the Gallery.
At the time when the gallery opened, Victoria was an independent colony for just ten years, but in the wake of the Victorian gold rush, it was easily the richest part of Australia, and Melbourne the largest city. Generous gifts from wealthy citizens, notably industrialist Alfred Felton, made it possible for the National Gallery to start purchasing large collections of overseas works from both old and modern masters. It currently holds 63,000 works of art.
The National Gallery of Victoria is an art gallery and museum in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1861, it is the oldest and the largest public art gallery in Australia.
