Watermelon Man

The Watermelon Man and his son,
parked along the boulevard, the tailgate down on his red, green and gold painted pickup revealing a cargo of luscious melons.
“Fresh, juicy, golden watermelons! Get your delicious watermelon slices, just a dollar!” shouted a young urban barker wearing a Giants cap and wire-rimmed glasses with no lenses, and holding a fistful of bills.
The Watermelon Man, shirtless in a pair of farmer’s overalls and a weathered leather cap, expertly wielded a long knife, filling an aluminum tray with golden triangles and slices of honeydew melon. His dreadlocked son, the third in the operation, worked the other side of the tailgate in his stylishly oversized white T.
I bought a slice and yes, it lived up to the “juicy delicious” patter. The Watermelon Man (I never did learn his real name) explained that he grows the melons near Sacramento for a seed company so most of the year the fruit is processed, the remains composted or turned into animal feed.
As he began to tell me about how he started growing melons 30 years ago in an urban garden in San Francisco’s Hunter’s Point, spinning a story about community building, a four-wheeler rolled up driven by a guy in a yellow shirt from the Security crew. “Sorry, no vending allowed on Bob Marley Blvd,” he announced almost apologetically. “You’ll have to pack up and move this truck off this road,” he insisted as the barker resisted. Our conversation was cut short as the trio moved to comply. I kept moving toward the music — and the officially sanctioned food.

Even though Captured Live might be Peter Tosh's greatest recorded gift, this 1977 studio album was his best--by far--away from the stage. Equal Rights opens with two great salvos, "Get Up, Stand Up" and "Downpressor Man," both of them politically unequivocal in their support, aptly, of human rights and political equity. In his post-Wailers days, Tosh seemed ever in dialogue with his conscience and his obsession with Bob Marley's fame. Tosh sought a place for himself somewhere between reggae and pop (check out the Mick Jagger and Tosh duet, "(You Gotta Walk and) Don't Look Back" on the hits pack Scrolls of the Prophet). In itself, such a desire isn't at all surprising, but it did impact Tosh's music even on his best studio album. But even with any wrinkles, Equal Rights holds a spot firmly as one of the best reggae albums of the 1970s. In this reissue, it comes with a pair of live bonus tracks, "Pick Myself Up" and "African," both recorded live and charged with the best Tosh energy. --Andrew Bartlett

"There Is No Better Place To Be Today"

Well, any day actually. What could be better than a beer cooler?? But today especially! It is 34F in here! The high was 99F, and with a dewpoint of 80, the heat index rose to 117F. The worst yet this summer. The line in the kitchen was just unbearable. I moved a prep table so that it was directly under an air conditioning vent, and prayed we had very little business. I was rewarded with a bunch of to-go orders as no one else wanted to actually go out in the heat either. To think, six months ago, there was 3 feet of snow on the ground.

I had a bridal shower to do, along with the weekly specials to prep for. The bridemaid insisted that the vessels for the chicken salad be clear glass, not metalic. I had to describe for her in great detail how the fruit tray would be presented. That speaks for how the day went. I have had a few bridezillas, but a maid-of-honorzilla??? Give me a break, woman! This kitchen feels like 170F. I drank gallons of water, and never had to hit the bathroom once all day. And she is worried the leaf lettuce covers all of the tray and the fruit is arranged so that each color is bold and stands out? I am not having much luck with women this week. No wonder I prefer men.

Oh yeah, a follow on to my recent t-shirt discussion. I have not worn this t-shirt in a while. I put it on this morning, because it is about the only clean one left till I do wash tomorrow. XL, just like the rest, but jeez....

Unicorn Creek & boulder field

Unicorn Creek at the bottom of this photo. The place I took a rest and snack break is at the top of the boulder field at the top of this photo.

July 22nd, 2008 - with Mt. Rainier Park totally enveloped in a thick white misty cloud - - I hiked up past Bench Lake, then across a snow field. There I climbed a large boulder field on the west side of the valley, where, if the clouds cleared (they never did), I would have a spectacular view of Snow Lake below and Unicorn Peak behind it.

From my perch high atop the boulder field, I broke out some trail mix and my small plastic tri-pod for a couple of self portraits (I was hiking solo).

Joining me figuratively for my snack break were hoary marmots and pikas galore. Joining my literally for my snack break was a cheeky little Townsend chipmunk.

After enjoying a long relaxed rest at the top of the boulder field I traversed along the cliff base then hiked down the slope to where Unicorn Creek empties into Snow Lake.

Visibility was still less than 100 yards, but the quiet serenity made it a memorable visit to a place I have been many time in many seasons.

I saw lots of wildlife that day including a pair of silver fox, who now appear to be making them a steady sight in the area (we saw one of them last month in the same general area). But my favorite mountain creature has always been and always will be: Ochotona princeps - - the pika.

white t-shirts are very important and have many uses, anywhere from free day shirt, rehearsal shirt, cut up for a cleaning rag, cut to wear under the uniform, makes a great pillow or towel if you forget yours on the bus, and much more.

Motherhood quilt label and story

Okay, so here's the story. First, a little family history, especially since the theme is Motherhood and, since I'm NOT a mother, I focused on MY mother. My Mom is one of four kids, and they all live pretty close to each other. My maternal grandfather died just after I turned 16, but my maternal grandmother passed away just nine years ago. (For those of you doing the math, she outlived him by 15 or 16 years.) At the time she passed away, Gramma had 11 great-grandchildren--one girl (the oldest) and the rest boys.

When we were going through Gramma's stuff, I spotted an apron that was a lovely pastel stripe with little embroidered-type flowers. (The name for this escapes me.) My intention at the time was to work it into a quilt for any of the great-granddaughters born after Gramma passed away. (This did not seem like much of an undertaking, given the family's track record for delivering boys.) Turns out that baby my cousin was carrying at the time was the first of several baby girls. At last count, I think there have been nine new additions in that generation and five of them have been girls! I'd like to say that each baby got their quilt the day after they were born, but I'm just not that organized. The first one, Lyda, got her quilt when she was 4—I made it in a quilt guild workshop. The second two, Kayleigh and Jenna, got theirs when they were 3—I had the first top pieced but not quilted, and couldn't give one without the other because the two girls were first cousins born within months of each other. And the latest arrivals were the luckiest—Adeline and Madison had theirs before their 6-month checkups! I was on a roll getting Kayleigh and Jenna's done, so I just kept going. Thank goodness for winter nights!

Each quilt is a different pattern, though they all use the same basic pastel palette—the colors from the apron. Many years ago, I found the paper doll print and bought a bunch of it, not sure what I might do with it. (I bought it with yellow background and off-white background—I liked it that much!.) I also bought the border fabric that you see in the square pinwheel quilt—Adeline's—I couldn't resist those little dolls in the stripes. So the doll fabric ties them all together. The interesting part is that Gramma always had dolls with fancy dresses in the basement for her grandkids to play with, so the fabric seems a perfect memorial. Each quilt gets a label that includes a picture of Gramma and a message to each of the girls. Each label is surrounded by the apron fabric. Truth is, I was afraid to work the apron fabric into the quilt, as I don't really know how old it is and I didn't want to have to repair blocks if the fabric fell apart over time. Plus, the apron fabric is limited, and if my cousins keep creating little baby girls, I'm going to run out soon.

My family is big on memory items. This same grandmother had a red-and-white quilt that had holes and stains all over it from the years of use. We discovered it in her hope chest and my Mom and Aunt Janie turned the blocks into Christmas ornaments for the whole family. When my paternal grandmother passed away, my Mom took some of the clothes and aprons that were most familiar to all of us and turned them into Christmas ornaments as well. I've heard stories of families taking their dad's flannel shirts and turning them into a quilt or pillows. I've got several dresses from my Gramma that I wear on occasion. They're vintage 1950s and 60s, and I wear them when I'm in a retro mood. Whether you cut apart the clothes to salvage the fabric or just rework them to suit your style, the preservation of the memories is the same.

Hoodwink

Hoodwinks also been changed bit...I haven't really looked at her old pictures so I'm not sure how much she still looks like herself, but I do know I like this better.
Other than the fact that I had to change her hair-do considering I couldn't find the name of the style anywhere -- just a little peeved at that xD

Anyways, I'm incredibly jealous of her outfit I must say -- you don't see the bottom half because I completely ruined the skirt I was planning on her wearing ~.-
But the shirt/scarf I loooooove ^_^

and also went to a bargain bin store which could have easily been mistaken for a flipping landfill with the clothes you found in there -- don't get me wrong, I love bargain Bins, in fact I was practically raised on them (awesome junk you find there) but the crap that was in this one store in particular was ridiculous!

5 shirts and all of 'em had something wrong with them ~.~
Either it was 'ooh, a stain' -- I could have sworn I found a shirt with blood on it, too -- or 'a rip in the damned shoulder strap'

Anything other than that had to have belonged in the 80s...the ugly part of 80's fashion.
And well yeah, it sucked ~.-

UPDATE: I've started spreading the word amongst friends and family... I'm collecting basic necessities, and money... and if anyone knows of or has a car that at least runs that they want to donate or sell very cheap, please let us know. I met a couple tonight that does live in one of these. While we were walking down the tracks and taking pictures I saw a couple going into a traincar. After I was done shooting and had been listening to them move things around inside for a while I stopped and tried to talk to them.

I asked if they needed anything and the man only asked for two things: a battery-powered alarm clock, and if I could stop by sometimes and check on his wife while he's working. They'd been robbed by some kids who took his alarm clock and some other belongings... and harassed them. He gets up at 4am to go to the Labor Office and with trains going by throughout the evening he really needed an alarm clock. They both sounded educated and he had a plan to save and buy a cheap vehicle from doing day labor and other odd jobs.

We drove home and gathered some things to take back to them. I'd already started gathering a few clothing items I'd planned to donate to charity anyways. I gathered up a couple pair of pants, some shirts and sweaters, a jacket and two pair of shoes that don't fit me well, a big pillow, a blanket, old sheet and some towels. We also filled one of our older ice chests with some frozen bottled water, gathered up some snacks and foods that didn't need to be cooked or opened with a can opener, disposable utensils and dishes. I quickly cooked up a package of vegetables and some sausage and collected a bottle of aspirin, bug repellent, mouthwash and alka-seltzer cold medicine, a few trash bags and ziploc bags. Then we quickly drove to Wal-Mart and I found an inexpensive battery-powered atomic alarm clock, a lantern, crank flashlight, a tiny child's FM radio, big package of AA batteries, a bicycle lock (hope it will work on the traincar door so they can stay safer), first aid kit, 2 shirts for the man, toothpaste and toothbrushes, a bag of apples and oranges and a loaf of bread. We made it back just before it was too dark, and they were SO appreciative. I don't know if they figured we wouldn't be back... or at least not tonight.

I wish them well and we'll be stopping by again in a few days to bring them more water and probably a simple cooked meal.

We've been so down lately because we feel like we are sinking... paycuts, busness slowing down... drowning in bills and behind on everything. But then you find people like this who have it so much worse and it makes you think... and stop whining and start trying to improve your situation.
