Once Upon a Potty for Him DVD For many seasons, both the for Him and for Her versions of Once Upon a Potty in VHS cassette format have been best-selling items at bookstores throughout America. Now, both of these two cheerfully animated cartoons are also available as DVDs to make toilet training a little easier on both parents and kids. One DVD tells a little boy's story of potty-training success; the other tells a girl's story. Toddlers will enjoy watching Joshua and Prudence graduate from diapers to potty, and will want to emulate these cheery cartoon kids and sing The Potty Song along with them. Both versions of Once Upon a Potty are also still available as videocassettes. See backlist for details. (Ages 1-4) Admit it: you never thought you'd be buying a video with the word potty in the title. But it's been months, and while Junior seems to love his potty, he doesn't actually do anything in it. So you need some inspiration. Well, you've found it. This video expands upon the popular children's book by the same name in two ways: there's a sing-along potty song and a 13-minute doctor's statement for parents. The director of child psychiatry at a prominent New York hospital will calmly reassure you that it's perfectly normal for Junior to be taking his sweet time letting go of the diapers, and that's worth a lot. And the animated retelling of Joshua's potty progress is good, too. But it's the "music video" of the oh-so-catchy "Potty Song" that makes this half-hour tape. And just in case you aren't already singing the song in line at the bank or the grocery store, the thoughtful producers have included a lyric sheet for you. "Yes, I'm going to my potty, potty / Now, I'm going to my potty, potty...." --Kimberly Heinrichs 83% (15) Movie Prime with trailer Movie Prime 'borrows' Masterpiece Prime's trailer. During the darkest days of Cambodian history under the Khmer Rouge's reign of terror a red-checked krama worn with black pyjamas and a Maoist cap was identified with hate and mass murder as the uniform of Khmer Rouge soldiers. But the krama is more than its checkered history and more than just a scarf; it can be put to a multitude of uses. This includes: a sling for carrying a baby or goods, a hat to keep the hot sun off, a cushion to protect the head from heavy trays and baskets, clothing such as a dress, shirt, skirt, apron and shorts, a hammock, a pillow cover, a sarong, and infinitely more. This has led some scientists to try extreme methods such as showing pandas videos of mating pandas and giving male pandas Viagra. The primary reproduction method had been artificial insemination. Only recently have researchers begun to have success with captive breeding programs and have determined that pandas have comparable breeding to some populations of the American Black Bear, a thriving bear family. The current reproductive rate is considered one young every two years. Pandas reach sexual maturity between the ages of four and eight, and may be reproductive until age 20. The mating season takes place between March and May, when a female goes into her estrous cycle which lasts for two or three days and only occurs once a year. When mating, the female is in a crouching, head-down position as the male mounts her from behind. Copulation time is short, ranging from thirty seconds to five minutes, but the male may mount her repeatedly to ensure successful fertilization. The gestation period ranges from 95 to 160 days. Baby pandas weigh only 90 to 130 grams (3.2 to 4.6 ounces), which is about 1/900 of the mother's weight. Usually, the female panda gives birth to one or two panda cubs. Since baby pandas are born very small and helpless, they need the mother's undivided attention, so she is able to care for only one of her cubs[dubious – discuss]. She usually abandons one of her cubs, and it dies soon after birth. At this time, scientists do not know how the female chooses which cub to raise, and this is a topic of ongoing research. The father has no part in helping raise the cub. When the cub is first born, it is pink, furless, and blind. A panda cub is also extremely small, and it is difficult for the mother panda bear to protect it because of the baby's size. It nurses from its mother's breast 6 to 14 times a day for up to 30 minutes at a time. For three to four hours, the mother may leave the den to feed, which leaves the panda cub defenseless. One to two weeks after birth, the cub's skin turns gray where its hair will eventually become black. A slight pink color may appear on the panda's fur, as a result of a chemical reaction between the fur and its mother's saliva. A month after birth, the color pattern of the cub's fur is fully developed. A cub's fur is very soft and coarsens with age. The cub begins to crawl at 75 to 90 days; mothers play with their cubs by rolling and wrestling with them. The cubs are able to eat small quantities of bamboo after six months, though mother's milk remains the primary food source for most of the first year. Giant Panda cubs weigh 45 kg (99.2 pounds) at one year, and live with their mothers until they are 18 months to two years old. The interval between births in the wild is generally two years. In July 2009, Chinese scientists confirmed the birth of the first cub to be successfully conceived through artificial insemination using frozen sperm. The panda was born at 07:41 on 23 July that year in Sichuan as the third child of You You, an 11-year-old.[35][36][37] The technique for freezing the sperm in liquid nitrogen was first developed in 1980 and the first birth was hailed as a solution to the problem of lessening panda semen availability which had led to in-breeding.[37][38] It has been suggested that panda semen, which can be frozen for decades, could be shared between different zoos to save the species. It is expected that zoos in destinations such as San Diego in the United States and Mexico City will now be able to provide their own semen to produce more pandas San Diego Zoo-San Diego Ca. Masai Giraffe Baby and Soemmerrings Gazelle Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi Giraffe gestation lasts between 400 and 460 days, after which a single calf is normally born, although twins occasionally occur.[20] The mother gives birth standing up and the embryonic sack usually bursts when the baby falls to the ground. Newborn giraffes are about 1.8 m (6 ft) tall. Within a few hours of being born, calves can run around and are indistinguishable from a week-old calf; however, for the first two weeks, they spend most of their time lying down, guarded by the mother. The young can fall prey to lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, and wild dogs. It has been speculated that their characteristic spotted pattern provides a certain degree of camouflage. Only 25 to 50% of giraffe calves reach adulthood; the life expectancy is between 20 and 25 years in the wild and 28 years in captivity Nanger soemmerringii The Soemmerring's Gazelle is a tall gazelle with tan flanks, gradually turning to white on the belly, and long black horns. They are approximately 0.6-0.9 m (2-3 ft.) at the shoulder, and they weigh 35-45 kg (77-99 lb). The diet of the gazelle consists of acacia and bush leaves, grasses, and herbs. They inhabit open steppes with brush and acacia, as well as steppes with few trees, and scientists suggest that male Soemmerring's are temporarily territorial. The life span for this animal is up to 14 years. In many parts of North Africa and the Middle East, large stone corrals were constructed to drive herds of gazelle into, making for an easy ambush. This method of hunting started in prehistoric time and continued into the early part of the twentieth century. One interesting fact is that at some point in history, a Soemmerring's gazelle population became isolated on Kebir Island in the Dahlak archipelago where the gazelle actually developed a dwarf form of the larger mainland races. Most species of gazelle have been hunted for food over the course of history. Soemmerrings are very understudied due to their small numbers. In their former ranges, they are extinct due to over-hunting, trophies, and food. Soemmerring's and Grant's gazelles' outward appearance are so similar that they are often mistaken for each other where their ranges overlap. San Diego Zoo-San Diego Ca. In 1968, into the devastating, spare atmosphere of the remote coastal town of Labrador, Canada, a child is born: a baby who appears to be neither fully boy nor fully girl, but both at once. Only three people are privy to the secret?the baby’s parents, Jacinta and Treadway, and a trusted neighbor and midwife, Thomasina. Though Treadway makes the difficult decision to raise the child as a boy named Wayne, the women continue to quietly nurture the boy’s female side. And as Wayne grows into adulthood within the hyper-masculine hunting society of his father, his shadow-self, a girl he thinks of as ?Annabel,” is never entirely extinguished. Kathleen Winter has crafted a literary gem about the urge to unveil mysterious truth in a culture that shuns contradiction, and the body’s insistence on coming home. A daringly unusual debut full of unforgettable beauty, Annabel introduces a remarkable new voice to American readers. The Band Name Book What's in a name? Ask the lead singer. A big, open-it-anywhere book created for music fans and pop-culture followers of all ages, The Band Name Book explains how (or where) the best-named bands in history got their names. Those names are profound, clever, silly, provocative or downright obscure. This entertaining book is full of information and trivia about bands from the dawn of rock 'n' roll right up to today's Internet-based independents. The Beatles are here, as well as Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails and the Goo Goo Dolls. But the best fun is found with rock history's lesser-known groups, in Web-savvy contemporary bands, and with true originals. Among their names: Atomic Rooster Arctic Monkeys The Lemonheads The Formaldebrides The Soup Dragons Pavlov's Woody Arcade Fire Big Al and the Kaholics Hectic Watermelon Smorgasborgnine. The Band Name Book includes entries on thousands of bands from more than 30 countries, divided into dozens of entertaining and irreverent categories with special notes on name origins, genres and best album titles. There are profiles of notable bands. And there's even a list of "Names Still Available" for each category. (20081127) 88% (14) Crash Symbol, 2009 Snider-Deville Collective American, founded 2009 Crash Symbol, 2009 Multi-media installation of found object cymbal, wooden drumstick, perfume, U.S. currency Courtesy of the artists The Snider-Deville art collective take their name from the lead musicians of two rock bands: Dee Snider, the lead singer of Twisted Sister, and C.C. Deville, the lead guitarist of the band Poison. In this interactive installation work, the viewer encounters a number of repurposed objects. A cymbal stands stoic against the wall, accompanied by a bottle of perfume and a five-dollar bill. A drummer’s band equipment stands alone, flanked by tell-tale signs of last night’s sordid activities. A loud percussion cymbal invites the engagement of the audience while the allure of other suggestive objects beckons from the side. So much is happening at once here. But what is happening here? Perhaps we can deduce that these artists are themselves failed musicians, without any true “hidden talent” and feeling “wild” as the self-same tagline printed in white block letters on top of the hi-hat. Indeed, one can see evidence of “wild” hitting of the cymbal when investigating the upper rim of the cymbal. It is perhaps suitable that the Snider-Deville group offers platitudes such as these when describing their intent: I think the Twisted Sister song, “We’re Not Going to Take it.” perfectly realizes our "bravado" while the Poison song, “I Won’t Forget You” indicates our romantic side. They both very clearly demonstrate the need to kick ass when doing both of these things, the importance of hats, hair, swimming pools, dads, mom, "hot chicks," tight pants, the importance of enormous crowds, the importance of long hair in the face of control, the truth of makeup and television, roving lights, and how the drummer is really the one that makes this all happen and stay in sync. To probe deeper into the psychology of this collective, we must look to song lyrics of the aforementioned bands as significant evidence: Twisted Sister *We're Not Gonna Take It * Oh We're Not Gonna Take It no, We Ain't Gonna Take It oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore we've Got The Right To Choose And there Ain't No Way We'll Lose It this Is Our Life, This Is Our Song we'll Fight The Powers That Be Just don't Pick Our Destiny 'cause you Don't Know Us, You Don't Belong oh We're Not Gonna Take It no, We Ain't Gonna Take It oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore oh You're So Condescending your Gall Is Never Ending we Don't Want Nothin', Not A Thing From You your Life Is Trite And Jaded boring And Confiscated if That's Your Best, Your Best Won't Do oh..................... oh..................... we're Right/yeah we're Free/yeah we'll Fight/yeah you'll See/yeah oh We're Not Gonna Take It no, We Ain't Gonna Take It oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore oh We're Not Gonna Take It no, We Ain't Gonna Take It oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore no Way! oh..................... oh..................... we're Right/yeah we're Free/yeah we'll Fight/yeah you'll See/yeah we're Not Gonna Take It no, We Ain't Gonna Take It we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore we're Not Gonna Take It, No! no, We Ain't Gonna Take It we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore just You Try And Make Us we're Not Gonna Take It come On no, We Ain't Gonna Take It you're All Worthless And Weak we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore now Drop And Give Me Twenty we're Not Gonna Take It oh Crinch Pin no, We Ain't Gonna Take It oh You And Your Uniform we're Not Gonna Take It Anymore Poison *I Won't Forget You* Late at night I close my eyes And think of how things could have been And when I look back I remember some words you had said to me It’s better to have lost at love Then never to have loved at all I won’t forget you baby Even though I could I won’t forget you baby Even though I should, yeah Sometimes in my head I can still see pictures of you And I laugh to myself When I think about of all those crazy things that we used to do Although miles come between us Just between you and me I won’t forget you baby Even though I could I won’t forget you baby Even though I should, yeah I should let you fade away But that just wouldn’t be me Oh, baby Although miles come between us Just between you and me I won’t forget you baby Memories slowly fade I won’t forget you baby And all the plans we made I won’t forget you baby It would be a cliche to say that these lyrics indicate the dual forces of soulful nostalgia and ensuing violent aggression of the members of this art collective, though in fact, this is actually the case. The poetry of this artwork clearly resides in the parataxis of these numerous, ambiguous, conflated ideas: noise, silence, confusion, direction, income, economic crash, sex for hire, love with abandon, frustration, celebration, and the ambiguous notion of what constitutes “talent.” •Founded in 2009 •Multi-media art “installation” •Homophone •What else do you see? •Hit it!!!!!! The Jordaans introduced their new label, Eliana, to an enthusiastic crowd. Brian chose the name, pronounced el-ee-AH-nah, he says because it “evokes the elegance of the wine” and it means “God has answered” in Hebrew and Romance languages. Between sips of wine and bites of appetizers, Brian gave a tour of the vineyard that has grapes planted in the exact percentage of his Bordeaux blend: 56% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s no coincidence. Vineyard owner Stan Shulster planned it that way in 1998 when he planted his Bella Vista (“Beautiful Vista”) vineyard on a slope overlooking the Rogue Valley. The Jordaans leased the vineyard from the Shulsters in 2008, gathered friends to harvest that October and hired Steve Anderson, the winemaker of Eola Hills Wine Cellars near Salem, to custom crush the grapes and make the wine. Today, they have 400 cases of 2008 Eliana Reserve ($30), which took home a silver medal in this summer’s World of Wine Festival. More inspiring than their quick recognition is the Jordaan family’s journey to the Rogue Valley. Brian and Carien were born in different African countries but met in Atlanta, Georgia. They returned to Jordaan’s father’s farm in Zimbabwe to grow roses for the European market, but the government’s controversial land redistribution policy and aggressive squatters forced them off their land. The rest of their story appears in this month’s issue of the Oregon Wine Press: Roses to Red Wine By Janet Eastman Brian Jordaan was growing roses in Zimbabwe in 2004 when he was forced off his father’s land at gunpoint. He was told by the leader of an angry mob that he would be paid nothing for his 3,000 acres. He had no choice but to accept. Jordaan, his wife Carien and their four children – who were 7, 6, 3 and 2 at the time – escaped with 12 quickly packed suitcases. Their destination: Of all places, Medford, Oregon, where a friend of Carien’s was able to get her a job as an occupational nurse. Without a work permit, Brian became a stay-at-home dad. He dreamed of finding a career in which he could use his hands, tap his deep knowledge of farming and perhaps the couple’s appreciation of wine. Fast forward to today: Brian Jordaan has just bottled 400 cases of 2008 Eliana, a Bordeaux blend that debuted at the World of Wine Festival, Southern Oregon’s August wine competition in Gold Hill. The wine represents not only uncountable hours of the Jordaan family working together on leased land, but a new beginning. “It’s a chance to start over,” said Jordaan, age 39. “And we feel incredibly lucky to be here.” Many of Oregon’s noted wine pros are enjoying encore careers: Bill Hatcher was a financial planner for billion-dollar corporations before starting A to Z Wineworks. Earl Jones retired as a clinical dermatologist and introduced Spanish grapes to the Umpqua Valley through Abacela. Dave Palmer was an Air Force fighter pilot, and his wife, Pamela, had a degree in dental hygiene before buying Jacksonville Vineyard and creating the Fiasco label. But for Jordaan, producing wine is an extension of his farming, his father’s sacrifices to buy land in his native Zimbabwe, and his father-in-law’s encouragement to start a new business and reassurance to Jordaan that on that one frightful day, he made the right call. Back in 2000, people adopting Zimbabwe’s controversial land reform policies had seized much of the minority white-owned farms. Jordaan’s farm was divided, leaving him with just 30 acres to grow roses for the European market. One afternoon, four years later, he was confronted by a mob, telling him that if he didn’t leave, they would beat him and brutalize his wife and children. “It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and we were told we had until 6 a.m. to pack up and leave,” he recalled. “We went into the house, closed the doors and hunkered down in a room. I lined up my firearms and had this incredible feeling that this was it: Either I fight for my family’s life and get out alive, or I don’t survive.” Just then, the Black Boots riot squad broke down the gate and the front door of his house and asked, “Do you want to leave freely?” Jordaan answered, “Yes.” They told Jordaan which valuables to leave behind, and the family escaped. Eliana is born Recently, Jordaan decided to name his wine “Eliana” because the name means “God has answered” in several languages. The label on the back of his bottle states that Jordaan “manicures” the 2,300 vines producing his grapes. A visit to the three-acre vineyard in Ashland proves this. The 12-year-old vines of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon benefit from steady sunshine, fine Carney clay and well-draining Brader-Debenger soils, and Jordaan’s hawk-eyed attention. Retired attorney Stan Shulster and Sumatran Orangutan Baby Pongo pygmaeus abelii Little Cinta (CHEEN tah) is turning out to be one spunky guy! His mom, Indah, had never had a baby before and wasn't quite certain what to do with her newborn. But Cinta, through sheer determination and a loud voice, made sure his needs were met. The growing boy currently weighs 50 pounds (22.5 kilograms). The Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) is the rarer of the two species of orangutans. Living on and endemic to Sumatra island of Indonesia, it is smaller than the Bornean Orangutan. The Sumatran Orangutan grows to about 1.4 metres (4.6 ft) tall and 90 kilograms (200 lb) in males. Females are smaller, averaging 90 centimetres (3.0 ft) and 45 kilograms (99 lb). Like the other great apes, orangutans are remarkably intelligent. Although tool use among chimpanzees was documented by Jane Goodall in the 1960s, it was not until the mid-1990s that one population of orangutans was found to use feeding tools regularly. A 2003 paper in the journal Science described the evidence for distinct orangutan cultures. According to research psychologist Robert Deaner and his colleagues, orangutans are the world's most intelligent animal other than humans, with higher learning and problem solving ability than chimpanzees, which were previously considered to have greater abilities. A study of orangutans by Carel van Schaik, a Dutch primatologist at Duke University, found them capable of tasks well beyond chimpanzees’ abilities — such as using leaves to make rain hats and leakproof roofs over their sleeping nests. He also found that, in some food-rich areas, the creatures had developed a complex culture in which adults would teach youngsters how to make tools and find food. A two year study of orangutan symbolic capability was conducted from 1973-1975 by Gary L. Shapiro with Aazk, a juvenile female orangutan at the Fresno City Zoo (now Chaffee Zoo) in Fresno, California. The study employed the techniques of David Premack who used plastic tokens to teach the chimpanzee, Sarah, linguistic skills. Shapiro continued to examine the linguistic and learning abilities of ex-captive orangutans in Tanjung Puting National Park, in Indonesian Borneo, between 1978 and 1980. During that time, Shapiro instructed ex-captive orangutans in the acquisition and use of signs following the techniques of R. Allen and Beatrix Gardner who taught the chimpanzee, Washoe, in the late-1960s. In the only signing study ever conducted in a great ape's natural environment, Shapiro home-reared Princess, a juvenile female who learned nearly 40 signs (according to the criteria of sign acquisition used by Francine Patterson with Koko, the gorilla) and trained Rinnie, a free-ranging adult female orangutan who learned nearly 30 signs over a two year period. For his dissertation study, Shapiro examined the factors influencing sign learning by four juvenile orangutans over a 15-month period. The first orangutan language study program, directed by Dr. Francine Neago, was listed by Encyclopedia Britannica in 1988. The Orangutan language project at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., uses a computer system originally developed at UCLA by Neago in conjunction with IBM. Orangutan "laughing"Zoo Atlanta has a touch screen computer where their two Sumatran Orangutans play games. Scientists hope that the data they collect from this will help researchers learn about socializing patterns, such as whether they mimic others or learn behavior from trial and error, and hope the data can point to new conservation strategies. A 2008 study of two orangutans at the Leipzig Zoo showed that orangutans are the first non-human species documented to use 'calculated reciprocity' which involves weighing the costs and benefits of gift exchanges and keeping track of these over time. Although orangutans are generally passive, aggression toward other orangutans is very common; they are solitary animals and can be fiercely territorial. Immature males will try to mate with any female, and may succeed in forcibly copulating with her if she is also immature and not strong enough to fend him off. Mature females easily fend off their immature suitors, preferring to mate with a mature male. Orangutans do not swim. At least one population at a conservation refuge on Kaja island in Borneo have been photographed wading in deep water. Orangutans, along with Chimpanzees, gorillas, and other apes, have even shown laughter-like vocalizations in response to physical contact, such as wrestling, play chasing, or tickling. Why God gave us knees...to feed babies !! Livvy is now almost too big to take a bottle.......BUT she is still a baby to me as long as the twins are still here. She was born January 10 and the twins were born March 10...they are too little to go to the barn or to stop taking a bottle. I want all three goats to go at the same time......because it will be a very hard transition for all of us. At least Livvy will not have to go alone. From talking with a lot of people....I guess these three...I should say two, as Vic did not get into the Rhododendrum....are very lucky to be alive. I've been told that they usually do not survive Rhododendrum plant poisoning. Just wanted to show everyone out there how GREAT they are all doing. drinking her formula --Li Bao the baby gibbon born at Zoo Boise in April 2007. Keepers were forced to hand-raise her when her mother could not nurse her. "gibbon sitters" including myself had the job of caring for her during the day while keeping her within sight (and eventually reach) of her parents. This was to ensure she would think of herself as a baby gibbon, not a human baby. Caring For Premature Baby : Food Ideas For A Baby Shower : White Baby Beds Caring For Premature Baby
Caring for Your Premature Baby This guide aims to demystify what is often a frightening experience for parents, providing them with the most up-to-date information on pre-term infancy. The authors explain what to do if an extended hospital stay is required; how to prepare for the baby's arrival home; how to produce ongoing medical care and what to expect as the child develops. Parents of the approximately 11 percent of babies born prematurely (prior to 37 weeks gestation) will find this title a highly valuable resource guide, offering detailed medical information and emotional support. Authors Alan H. Klein, M.D., and Jill Alison Ganon, who deem prematurity "a different beginning," combine the experience of Klein's 25 years as a pediatrician and neonatologist with the assuring point of view of parents who have been there. Having a baby early births a host of medical complications, such as respiratory, vision, and hearing problems. Parents of premature infants are often plunged unprepared into the mysterious world of medical acronyms, for example: NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit); RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome); CLD (chronic lung disease); and ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). In chapters focusing on respiratory, neurological, and nutritional needs, as well as vision and hearing problems, Klein and Ganon describe medical conditions, treatments, and options so parents can make the best decisions. Chapters on changing expectations, parenting a child in the neonatal unit, and taking baby home balance the medical with the emotional issues of parenting a premature child. "Pessimism serves no purpose whatsoever," writes Klein. Indeed, the true-life stories and photographs of premature infants developing into healthy, rounded babies and children offer an overwhelming sense of hope and encouragement. --Ericka Lutz 77% (16) Justine & Augusta March of Dimes 2011 Today in the U.S., 1 in every 8 babies will be born prematurely. Some of them won't survive, and others will have health problems that could last a lifetime. The funds we raise in the March for Babies support research that saves babies' lives. Augusta, our own daughter, came 10 weeks early and was 2 pounds, 6 ounces when she was born May 31, 2002. She directly benefited from the important research that the March of Dimes does on behalf of all premature and low birth-weight babies. She spent 8 weeks in the only neonatal intensive care unit in our region at St. Vincent's in Billings, Montana. Since that time, Augusta has had wonderful medical care, has overcome an atrial-septal heart defect, and has met all her developmental milestones. The photo above was taken when Augusta was at St. Vincent's N-ICU, practicing her breathing. Today, Augusta practices her violin and is finishing second grade while she awaits the celebration of her ninth birthday. This year's participation in the March For Babies is a wonderful family treat for our growing-up girl. In the hopes that there will be more success stories like Augusta's, please send your donation for the 2011 March For Babies. It's easy, safe and secure to make your online donation. You can also join us at Plaza Diane in downtown Powell for the March on Saturday morning, June 11, for the event during the Saturday Market. (Pssst! Can you keep a secret? There will be a BOUNCE HOUSE!) Join us in spirit with the help of your donation to the March of Dimes. Thanks for your friendship and continued support. Please take a moment to donate what you can to give early babies like Augusta the best chance they can for a healthy life. The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. for my son I had this tattoo done for my sweet son, he was a premature baby and when he was born he used to fill my hands like this rose does now . close your eyes and see her face who loves you more than anyone else.....who cares for you in loneliness & dies for you when you cry.......she is no one but your sweet loving MuM.....Love her more than anyone else in this world....Because only she was, and will be there for you all the time.... From her research and personal experience, Helen Harrison knows exactly what parents want and need to know to deal with the emotional, medical, and practical issues facing them after the birth of a premature baby. Hi Ho Cherry-O For over 30 years, Hi Ho! Cherry-O has delighted children and parents with its simple-yet-fun introduction to counting. Children try to be first to pick their trees clean, filling their buckets with cherries. Just watch out for the dog, the bird, and the spilled bucket! Colors and parts may vary. No reading required. Includes gameboard, four cherry buckets and 40 plastic cherries. For 2 to 4 players. Round and round she goes. Hi Ho! Cherry-O is the counting game in which players race to be the first to have 10 cherries in their basket. A spin of the arrow determines your fate. It will instruct you to pick one, two, three, or four cherries from your tree and put 'em in your basket. That is, of course, if you don't land on the bird or the dog, requiring you to take two cherries from your basket and return them to the tree. And try not to land on the spilled bucket or--you guessed it--spill the contents of your basket or you start over. --Alison Golder 78% (18) Day 246/365 - Who's gonna win Who's gonna survive Who's going in Who's staying alive..... Funny from the Get-Go Fun from start to finish, Scribblish first requires each of the six players to choose a captioned card. Up against the clock, players must apply their scribbling skills as they each draw a picture to match the caption on their card. After the timer stops, players cover their images with their Scribble Scroll and roll the die to see who they'll pass their picture to. From there, all players must write, draw, and interpret what they see on the card for each timed round. Figure out which picture leads to your original card, or get voted as having the funniest caption or image to gain points. The results are almost always hilarious and the game is wonderfully addictive. A Built-In Element of Surprise Thanks to the Scribble Scrolls, players will have to rely on their imaginations to win. Scribblish allows each person only one clue--either a caption or an image--to create the text or image to match what's on the card. Much like in the childhood game of Telephone, clues change, evolve, and stretch further from their original captions as the players interpret what they see. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to turn this into that! Two Ways to Win You don't have to be Picasso to win this drawing game. Players can claim victory by correctly guessing which final image comes from their original card, or by being voted as having the best drawing or caption. Because each picture or comment is done by a different person, each player has an even chance of figuring out which scroll is theirs. Players can reward the clowns and artists in the group by placing tokens next to the caption or image they like best. What's in the Box 60 Scribblish cards, timer, six Scribble Scrolls, tablet of playing sheets, six-sided die, 12 tokens, and instruction booklet. How much water should my baby drink - Baby in hospital bed. How Much Water Should My Baby Drink
~* secret 14 *~ secret # 14/30 - i ain't afraid of no ghost i thought this would be kind of appropriate, considering the time of year. fact is, i don't believe in much...ghosts, ufos, varied and assorted social/cultural/religious myths. i am a bonafide lover of logic and reason and the cause for this state of mind is simple. every time i have believed in someone or something based on nothing more than blind faith or because someone said it was so, without benefit of evidence to support my belief, i was, at the very least, hurt...at the very worst, my life was almost completely destroyed. i don't believe anything blindly anymore. i was as responsible for having the wool pulled over my eyes, or just being downright screwed, as the people who screwed me. all my life, until about ten years ago, i had a desperate need to see people and situations as i wanted them to be rather than what they really were. i ignored, tolerated, overlooked any concrete evidence that did not support what i *wanted* to believe. i was so afraid of losing those few people that i called 'family' or 'friend' or 'partner' that i literally put up with anything...and then pretended it never happened. it was so much easier to believe what people said than what people actually did. so i believed my fairy tales and kept up my illusions until i had completely surrounded myself with people who knew exactly what to *say* to me but their *actions* were something else altogether. as you can imagine, the day arrived when, lo and behold, i actually hit the bottom of the barrel of life, so to speak, and not one...not a single soul out of all those people that i'd believed in, trusted, taken care of, stood up for and supported...not a single one of them held out a hand to me. couldn't overlook that. couldn't lie to myself anymore and that hurt. after that life-changing experience, i felt like i'd been reborn (not in the religious way). i was an empty vessel with no idea what to fill myself up with but one thing i knew for sure was that i needed *truth*. i craved it like a long, cool drink of water after a journey in the desert. even the truths that hurt, the painful ones, i wanted them. bring it on. it always hurts when your illusions are shattered. but it's a pain that has a very definite end. living a lie and living with the lies of others is a pain that last forever. i had to re-examine every facet of my entire life and the things i found weren't pretty. where once i'd had people in my life, i suddenly found myself completely alone...and after a year or so of being so lonely and desperate i thought i would die, it was suddenly glorious. i was finding out who 'carrie' really was. i was paying attention to who other people *really* were. the cover of life had been whisked away and i was amazed at how incredible things truly were. i didn't have to pretend that life was any certain way...it was magnificent just the way it was. some might say that, in love especially, you have to have illusions. love is a fairytale, right? not in my life. roger is the love of my life, my soulmate...but the way i feel about him is based, not on what i felt within the first few minutes of talking to him, but on months and months and years and years of him doing exactly what he says, being sometimes brutally honest with me (if i push him) and never, not once, turning his back on me in a crisis. he gave me evidence to support his claim that he cared about me. we went through some very bizarre situations where he could have turned and ran at any moment yet he stayed. he had several opportunities to tell me things that weren't quite true...but he always told the truth. to this day, and we've been together for over seven years, he has not told me a single lie. our relationship is firmly rooted, not in fairytale crap, but in logic and reason and evidence. i know when he opens his mouth, he will speak the truth because seven years of vast and varied experience have proven that to me. i've never seen/heard/felt anything that i would *ever* assume to be a ghost and there is no scientific research *at all* to support the theory so i'm not a believer. should evidence arise, i'll reconsider. i've never seen a single thing in the sky that i would ever associate with alien spacecraft...so until there is some evidence to support that claim, i'm a disbeliever. as for religion and politics, you do the math. if you want to be a salty, cynical, jaded ole battlea-axe, spend a lifetime believing in fairytales and have your heart broken repeatedly by the people you love and you're well on your way. footnote: if you have had experiences with ghosts or ufos or if you're religious or believe in your politicians, the last thing i meant to do with this narrative is offend you. this is my experience only and frankly, should probably have remained a secret. =] He was a wild dog and I was happy So when we last spoke it was dinner time at Rhino Walking Safari Camp and I mentioned how I uttered the fateful words "If you have got to go, better to be eaten by a pack of wild dogs than to be run over by a London bus...." The story continues.... .... with the pre-dawn unholy ululation of a hyena outside our hut. If you have ever heard this sound you will understand what I mean when I say Morgan and I went from asleep to WIDE awake in under a second. It was only once we saw our friendly local wake-up call walk past the window and down to the water pool, that we felt properly reassured the damn creature was not snuggled in bed with us. Anyway once our heart rates had subsided, Morgan went back to sleep - but I knew these were my last hours on safari and once awake, I wasn't going to waste another minute with my eyes shut. So I made myself a cup of tea and walked out on to the balcony with my camera. It was at this point 4 am and the light, what little there was of it, was faint and grey. Because of the timing of our flights out of Kruger Park, it had worked out that we were not going to be able to join the morning safari ride. To say I was gutted was something of an understatement. A woman in camp had seen african wild dogs the previous day - an extraordinarily rare sighting seeing as there are only about 200 of these endangered animals in Kruger (a park the size of Israel) and they don't have a "patch" the way other animals do, so a sighting one day was no guarantee that they would stay in tea area. I should probably explain that african wild dogs had become something of an obsession by this point - making it to the very top of my "would really really love to see..." list. So far I had had no luck and even though I was resigned to staying in camp for the morning I was not going to pass on the chance to witness a miracle, no matter how much the guides gently mocked me for my optimism. Somehow, some part of me believed that if I kept a close watch, they might just show up and say hello - what are the chances of that? In the stillness of pre-dawn, silk pyjamas (oh yes baby) and steaming cup in hand, I stood on the balcony doing my best impression of a coffee TV advert (even if I was drinking tea). Suddenly some movement caught my eye and I looked to the far left; there on the opposing bank of the dry river that our huts were adjacent too, I saw the white flash of a tail. I looked again, this time quite literally rubbing my eyes to make sure optimism and sleep deprivation hadn't resulted in hallucinations, and there he was - the first wild dog I have ever set eyes on. He was far and there was barely enough light to take a shot (certainly not enough to take a decent shot) but I didn't care. He was a wild dog and I was happy. After a labor lasting approximately 9 hours, your child, a girl, will be born. Your baby will weigh about 10 pounds, 14 ounces, and will be 18-1/2 inches long. This child will have blue eyes and be completely bald. *Can you imagine a 10 pound 14 ounce baby??!....Yikes! how big is my baby at 18 weeks pregnant THE BLACK PRISM begins a brand new action-packed tale of magic and adventure ... I leaf through my 5 photographs one last time, wondering if I made the right choices. The selection was not easy. It forced me to me really think about what I was about and what I wanted to share with those that I might meet out there. My first impulse was a selfish one. I thought about just picking photos of those I loved. In my mind I composed snapshots of Mom, my 11 brothers & sisters, my loving partner Brett, and even my cat Pekoe. These photos would remind me of good times gone by, and give me comfort when I was lonely. I imagined sharing these photos with my fellow space travelers, and saw their eyes glassing over with boredom as I took then on my pictorial trip down memory lane. Perhaps, I could find pictures that were more universal and meaningful to a broad audience. My second impulse was to pick some images that showed off the "best" of humanity and our planet Earth. For this I pictured flowers, pristine wilderness, mothers with smiling babies, and maybe some kittens. I imagined the warm smiles of my fellow passengers as we shared my Hallmark-esque images. Before I even got the camera out, I realized that this wasn't right. These pictures were telling a story that was a lie. It wasn't real life (at least not for me), and it shared nothing of the wonderful complexity that is human experience. My third (and final) impulse came by chance. Last Sunday was the annual Folsom Street Faire in San Francisco. The Faire bills itself as the largest gathering of the leather and kink community in the world. Surprisingly perhaps, it is also a place where insights into the human condition may be revealed. What strikes me most is the heady mixture of the ridiculous and the profound. Indeed, I have to wonder if these two aren't mutually necessary. I watch the man dressed as a dog being led around on a leash. The image has a certain silliness, but also something amazingly real. I watch a pair of leather daddies in leather chaps and pierced nipples, and am reminded off how we all choose our own costumes to define our selves. I see a naked guy, and am struck by how liberating that must be for him. And of course, every where I see an incredible mix of humanity - rich & poor, young & old, gay & straight, conventional & kinky. The tolerance and mutual respect makes me feel good about people (at least in my chosen corner of the world). So having chosen to share pictures from the Folsom Street Faire, I now needed to pare my photos down to only 5. I decided to chose 5 portraits that best showed off the spirit of the event. I like portraits as they allow the viewer to interact one-on-one with subject, always seeing a bit of ourselves reflected. My first photo is "dog boy". I had to smile when I saw dog boy being led around on a leash by his master. I spoke with the two of them to get permission to take a photograph. They were delighted, and eagerly posed for me. Dog boy revealed that his dog persona was part of his every day life. As his master stroked him behind his ears, he wagged his tail, and looked up at his master with devotion and love. What a crazy, wonderful world! My second photo is "cigar man". This leather daddy is all about this hyper-masculine theater of dominance. He reminds me how each of us is some mix of masculine and feminine qualities, and how interesting it is how we choose to hide or share these different parts of ourselves. My third photo is "gag boy". This guy was in a full gag and rubber bondage gear. He was completely powerless. When I asked if I could take his picture, he could only nod as the gag prevented any speech. Somehow, something in this reminded me of the human condition. So much of what happens is outside of our control. It fascinates me how someone could choose to be even more powerless, and I wonder if there might ironically be some power in such a choice. My fourth photo is "hot boy". This is just a young guy who I first just dismissed as "eye candy". However, my photo assignment gave me an opportunity to stop and talk with him. He was friendly, and excited that I wanted to take his picture. He seemed bright and energetic, and I thought that maybe I had misjudged him. My fifth and final portrait is "majorette". The energy of this young woman as she marched along was just plain fun. Again, the silliness and the creativity was just inspiring. I found myself promising that next year I am leaving the camera at home, and experiencing Folsom as a participant and not a tourist. I will be very interested to see what others think of my Folsom Portraits. Many of my classmates may have never been to the Folsom Street Faire (or even heard of it). I hope that at least a few are intrigued enough to check it out next year. Preparing for a baby Well according to Katie, I need to walk the talk and post more then I read. I like to catch up on what my friends are doing through their blogs, we all do. My problem continues to be dedicating time to share what we're up to on the homefront. Well we are pretty focused right now on what some might call "nesting." Some people might paint a room, buy a special rocking chair or buy a new car. I feel we have taken the art to a whole new level. How about new floors, new sinks, painting the whole house, getting the rocking chair (thanks to Popi and grandma) and the car. Tarah and I have spent a lot of time looking at buying a house here in California, something before our little guy is born, only to find that the market is not quite where we need it to be to take that step comfortably. I could share with you all of the weekends we spent touring homes and the spreadsheets, conversations with lenders and strategies, but we've resolved (and this could change next week) that we like where we are, but we needed to make some important changes to be completely comfortable with our decision to keep renting and watching the market soften. So, we decided that new floors and a fresh paint job would do the trick for now. So over the next three weeks we are dedicated to the major effort of remodeling someone else's house to better serve our interests in preparing for the arrival of our son in September. Before you write us off as crazy, consider the facts. With three dogs, living in rural Carpinteria and the fact we love our neighborhood (no neighbors), this major project is a small investment for the overall cleanliness necessary for our true desire for cleanliness, order and happiness. This certainly brings me back to the days of Shelton and all of the projects that were a part of my everyday life up in Washington. However, since becoming a tenet myself, I haven't lifted a hammer for almost two years until now. Tarah has been quite the trooper and helper despite her being pregnant. She's right alongside me every weekend and evening. We're a good team and everything is coming together nicely. Tarah, in her typical organizational fashion, has quite the calendar of events for this effort, complete with a schedule and backup plans. Its all pretty impressive and it is working. I feel like we are one of those HDTV home shows. Obviously we are both super motivated by our excitement to have everything ready for the big day when we come home in September. I've worked on similar projects with various motivations, but this one is especially motivating. Only comparable to my bathroom remodel at our Deegan house before Tarah came and visited me for the first time in Washington after we got back together. . .way back when. I miss the team I had there, Donny, my dad, my brother and Brad, but we're getting it done here, pregnant lady and all! Oh and the new "mommy-mobile" is great! No work necessary there. Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom The moment the second line on the pee stick turns pink, women discover they've entered a world of parenting experts. Friends, family, colleagues, the UPS delivery guy -- suddenly everybody is a trove of advice, much of it contradictory and confusing. With dire warnings of what will happen if baby is fed on demand and even direr warnings of what will happen if he isn't, not to mention hordes of militant "lactivists," cosleeping advocates, and books on what to worry about next, modern parenthood can seem like a minefield. In busy Mom-friendly short essays, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay delivers the empathetic straight dirt on parenting, tackling everything from Mommy & Me classes ("Your baby doesn't need to be making friends at three months old -- you do! But not with people you'll meet at Mommy & Me") to attachment parenting ("If you're holding your baby 24/7, that's not a baby, that's a tumor"). Stefanie Wilder-Taylor combines practical tips with sidesplitting humor and refreshing honesty, assuring women that they can be good mothers and responsibly make their own choices.
