Julia Morgan's office at Hearst Castle Julia Morgan (January 20, 1872 – February 2, 1957) was an American architect. She is best known for her work on Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. Born in San Francisco, California, she was raised in Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School in 1890. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1894 with a degree in civil engineering. At the urging of her friend and mentor Bernard Maybeck, whom she met in her final year in undergraduate school, she headed to Paris to apply to the famous Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Denied at first because the school was not accepting women, and a second time because she failed the entrance exam (she claimed in a letter that she had been failed deliberately because she was a woman), after two years she finally passed the entrance exams in the architecture program, placing 13th out of 376 applicants, and was duly admitted. She was the first woman to graduate with a degree in architecture from the school. Leander Stillwell Co. D, 61st ILL. Infantry From "A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans", written and compiled by William E. Connelley Leander Stillwell JUDGE LEANDER STILLWELL, now retired from the active duties of his profession, living at Erie, was one of the two pioneer attorneys who composed the first bar of Erie, and located there in 1868, nearly half a century ago. Aside from the amount of work he has performed as a lawyer and citizen, the chief distinction of his life rests upon his record of service, continued through nearly twenty-four years, as a judge of the district court. He is of English and Scotch ancestry. The first Stillwells on coming from England settled on Long Island, New York, in the seventeenth century. Later a branch of the family moved to Virginia, and from there drifted further south, and Judge Stillwell represents the Virginia and North Carolina lineage. His grandfather, Jeremiah Stillwell, was born in the year 1776, in North Carolina. His residence throughout his life was in that state, where he followed farming, but he died at the home of a married daughter whom he was visiting in the State of Iowa in 1852. He married Nancy Morrow. Judge Stillwell's parents were plain, honest people, never wealthy, and spent many years of their lives in the backwoods of western Illinois, in the rugged region along the Illinois and Mississippi rivers in Jersey County. It was on a farm in Otter Creek Precinct of that county on September 16, 1843, that Leander Stillwell was born. His father, Jeremiah O. Stillwell, was born July 28, 1814, in Haywood County, North Carolina, was reared there, but in 1834 removed to Illinois. He was married in Greene County, Illinois, December 14, 1837, to Miss Ann Eliza White, who was born in Chatham County, North Carolina, October 1, 1821. Her ancestors were of Scotch descent. Jeremiah Stillwell was a farmer in that portion of Greene County, Illinois, which subsequently became Jersey County. In 1881 he removed to Kansas, buying a farm near Colony, but a few years before his death retired to Garnett and died there September 27, 1896. He became a republican upon the organization of that party, and not only voted the ticket himself but reared his family in the same political faith, and essentially and fundamentally Judge Stillwell has always been a republican. Jeremiah Stillwell held various township offices, both in Illinois and Kansas, and was quite active in civic affairs. He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church. His wife died at Colony, February 6, 1894. Both had lived much beyond the allotted time of human life. Their children were twelve in number, of whom only five are now living, namely: Virgil, now a retired farmer at Dodd City, Arkansas; Leander; Reuben Fenton, now practicing dentistry at Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Logan, a banker at Mesa, Arizona; and Ernest Quincy, an attorney practicing law at Kansas City, Kansas. Judge Leander Stillwell was not yet eighteen years of age when the Civil war broke out. His life up to that time had been spent on his father's farm and his educational advantages away from home had been confined to the common schools. From January 7, 1862, the date of his enlistment, until September 8, 1865, when his regiment was mustered out, he was with the Union army in the field, and participated in the battle of Shiloh, the siege of Vicksburg, and several minor engagements. A brief statement of his "military and medical record" has been furnished by the adjutant general's office of the war department under a recent date. That record is as follows: "Leander Stillwell was enrolled January 7, 1862, at Carrollton, Illinois, and was mustered into service February 5, 1862, at Carrollton, Illinois, as a private of Company D, Sixty-first Regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers, to serve three years. He was appointed Corporal about February, 1862; Sergeant, August 20, 1862, and First Sergeant, September or October, 1863, and was mustered out as such at Little Rock, Arkansas, to date January 31, 1864, by reason of his re-enlistment as a veteran volunteer. He re-enlisted February 1, 1864, at Little Rock, Arkansas, to serve an additional term of three years, and was mustered into service to date February 1, 1864. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, same company and regiment, and was mustered in as such July 18, 1865, and was mustered out of service of the company as Second Lieutenant September 8, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee. "Under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 3, 1884, this officer has been recognized by the war department as First Lieutenant, Company D, Sixty-first Illinois Volunteers from August 21, 1865. During the entire period of his service this officer was accounted for on the bi-monthly muster rolls of his company as present for duty except that on October 31, 1863, it was stated that he was absent on furlough from October 16, 1863. The medical records show that he was treated from August India Institute of Technology Roorkee IIT Roorkee is one of the top engineering institutes of the world. Smokey Skies Dwight D. Eisenhower My fellow Americans: Three days from now, after half a century in the service of our country, I shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the Presidency is vested in my successor. This evening I come to you with a message of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my countrymen. Like every other citizen, I wish the new President, and all who will labor with him, Godspeed. I pray that the coming years will be blessed with peace and prosperity for all. Our people expect their President and the Congress to find essential agreement on issues of great moment, the wise resolution of which will better shape the future of the Nation. My own relations with the Congress, which began on a remote and tenuous basis when, long ago, a member of the Senate appointed me to West Point, have since ranged to the intimate during the war and immediate post-war period, and, finally, to the mutually interdependent during these past eight years. In this final relationship, the Congress and the Administration have, on most vital issues, cooperated well, to serve the national good rather than mere partisanship, and so have assured that the business of the Nation should go forward. So, my official relationship with the Congress ends in a feeling, on my part, of gratitude that we have been able to do so much together. II. We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment. III. Throughout America's adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among people and among nations. To strive for less would be unworthy of a free and religious people. Any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt both at home and abroad. Progress toward these noble goals is persistently threatened by the conflict now engulfing the world. It commands our whole attention, absorbs our very beings. We face a hostile ideology -- global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose, and insidious in method. Unhappily the danger is poses promises to be of indefinite duration. To meet it successfully, there is called for, not so much the emotional and transitory sacrifices of crisis, but rather those which enable us to carry forward steadily, surely, and without complaint the burdens of a prolonged and complex struggle -- with liberty the stake. Only thus shall we remain, despite every provocation, on our charted course toward permanent peace and human betterment. Crises there will continue to be. In meeting them, whether foreign or domestic, great or small, there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties. A huge increase in newer elements of our defense; development of unrealistic programs to cure every ill in agriculture; a dramatic expansion in basic and applied research -- these and many other possibilities, each possibly promising in itself, may be suggested as the only way to the road we wish to travel. But each proposal must be weighed in the light of a broader consideration: the need to maintain balance in and among national programs -- balance between the private and the public economy, balance between cost and hoped for advantage -- balance between the clearly necessary and the comfortably desirable; balance between our essential requirements as a nation and the duties imposed by the nation upon the individual; balance between actions of the moment and the national welfare of the future. Good judgment seeks balance and progress; lack of it eventually finds imbalance and frustration. The record of many decades stands as proof that our people and their government have, in the main, understood these truths and have responded to them well, in the face of stress and threat. But threats, new in kind or degree, constantly arise. I mention two only. IV. A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction. Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea. Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States h JAXPORT Chief Operating Officer, Chris Kauffmann Chris Kauffmann joined the Jacksonville Port Authority as the Director Seaport Security on September 23, 2002. He served for more than 27 years in the United States Marine Corps in various command and staff positions and retired as a Colonel. He returned to Jacksonville in July 2002 after serving for a year in his final military assignment as the Force Protection Officer with the U. S. Naval Forces, Central Command and 5th Fleet stationed in Manama, Bahrain. In this capacity he directed the security and anti-terrorism programs and operations for all personnel, ships, aircraft and facilities under the control of the Commander, U. S. Naval Forces, Central Command within the geographic area that stretches from the Suez Canal to the Arabian Gulf. During the height of Operation Enduring Freedom his responsibilities included direction and oversight for security of United States and Coalition naval assets totaling over 50,000 personnel, 100 ships, 200 aircraft as well as three major seaports and two major airfields in the countries of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. In the summer of 2003, Chris’ responsibilities were expanded and he was named Senior Director, Terminal Operations and Seaport Security. In this position he is responsible for all cargo operations and security requirements at the Talleyrand, Blount Island and Dames Point Marine Terminals. Chris was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in September, 2009 and now also oversees engineering and construction, as well as administration. Chris received a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University in 1975. While in the Marine Corps he also received a Masters in Business Administration from National University in 1982 and a Masters in National Military Strategy from the National Defense University in 1997. Zimbabwe rock art hol0038 Makoni overhang stitch This is a composite photo of the whole panel, from the three individual photos, so more detail should be visible. Interpretations are taken from Garlake’s book, ‘A Hunter’s Vision’ (plates XXXI - XXXV), with some additional comments. The upper part of the panel is dominated by a huge recumbent trancing figure with sable antelope markings on his face, painted with white flecks of potency and with a large ovoid of potency attached to his back. The positions of his limbs indicate that he is conscious, though unable to stand, and he holds up an oval object. Garlake believes that the objects on his head are elephant tusks, not horns, and the lines falling from his head may be suggesting a lion’s mane. A tendril emerges from his penis, passes behind his legs and end in a characteristic tuft, presumably indicating potency. He is surrounded by a few medium-sized figures, the largest of which is also recumbent and also trancing, as he also holds up an object and has two ovoids either side of his abdomen. The pair of figures near the main figure’s raised leg both have stiff outstretched arms, and a tufted line running from their heads, also indicating trance dancing. Below this is a dense mass of small figures formed into two scenes – the upper is a domestic scene including baskets, skins and gourds enhanced with white dots of potency – the curved lines may represent windbreaks or shelters. Below is a Sable Dance. The majority of the figures are enhanced with white and a few animals are included, including a larger dark animal which lies under the figures and is presumably older. At least three colours of figures occur – the dark ones enhanced with white, red brown and yellow-ochre coloured on the left. Lines of dark figures are painted with white to identify them with the sable antelope -chests bellies and the undersides of their limbs, facial stripes and eye surrounds. The Sable dance has reached a climax – the great figure is trancing and dots of potency enhance the genitals of the dancers. The dog like figure is also decorated with markings and tusks and may possibly represent a transformation of the dancers. A number of parallel lines can be seen, including one dark snake-like motif that runs vertically to the right of a dark white enhanced figure (next to the large dark animal). Garlake describes the trance dance as practised by the San people: Participants dance in a line, often very close together, bending slightly forward and taking short pounding steps. Some dancers hold their arms rigid … as the dance progresses through the night the atmosphere becomes highly charged … Those fully committed to trancing will dance together supporting and encouraging each other and transmitting their rising potency between themselves. A few will then enter trance, stagger, collapse, fall and lie rigid or limp. All sweat profusely and some bleed from their noses. Those trancing (full of potency) will be moved away where they are able to begin to heal patients, leave their bodies, become transformed, enter or take on the bodily forms of animals etc. In these forms they may prowl round and guard the camp or travel great distances to gain information about other groups, movements of game herds, locations of edible plants or rain clouds. They may enter the spirit world to combat spirits of the dead or gods to overcome evils sent into the community. During the trance dance, potency is everywhere and free - it can pass from one trancer to another, or sparking trance in the dancers. Animals with a high degree of potency and spirits will gather on the outskirts of the dance as invisible participants. Zimbabwe rock art hol0040 Makoni 3 This is a photo used in the composite one. Well worth the nice third degree burn I got on my arm from being clumsy holding the pan while Jazz got the last of it out with a spatula. Note to self: At least wear long sleeves next time. The toffee features sliced almonds on the inside, and crushed almonds in the Special Dark Chocolate on top. Real butter and vanilla... yum! Thanks for suggesting it, Jazz-o-plaz! Their circular design and the steely mesh of mud plaster, dung and twigs make them resist any wind pressure and quakes (in the 2001 earthquake when modern buildings toppled there was minimumal damage to these dwellings) The bhungas have a light dome-shaped bamboo and thatched roof and a circular wall. Their thick walls keep the interior cool when the temperature rises to 46 degrees celsius in summer and warm when it drops to two degrees in winter. Room progress: my desk area. St Stanislaus High School Bandra St. Stanislaus High School is an all-boys school located in the Mumbai suburb of Bandra run by the Society of Jesus. Its motto is Natus Ad Majora (in English, "Born For Greater Things"). The school, founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus, started as an orphanage and later grew to be a full-fledged educational institution for day-scholars as well as boarders. What started out as a school for 40-odd orphans has now grown to support 2,300 students. Natus ad majora (Born for greater things) [edit] History After a series of protracted negotiations spread over a period of more than four decades and necessitated by conditions prevalent at the time among various conflicting elements, the then Vicar Apostolic of Bombay, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Anastasius Hartmann, acquired by purchase a plot of land and proceeded to raise on it, not exactly a church, but a two-storeyed building, the ground floor of which was to be used as a church. The blessing of the foundation stone was done by Bishop Hartmann himself on the 12th April 1852. On 11 September 1853, the Church of St. Peter was consecrated by the same Dr. Hartmann and thus the first Propaganda Chapel of Salsette Island was inaugurated. Fr. Pascoal de Mello, a secular priest and native of Bandra, was appointed the first Vicar of the Church and was succeeded in 1856 by Fr. Anthony Pereira S.J., a native of Goa. The upper floor of the building was at first used as the priest's residence and a parish school, bearing the name of St. Aloysius. In 1855, the Seminary, which in 1853 had been transferred to Surat, was brought down to Bandra and lodged in this upper floor. As a result of this, the Seminary and the parish school were fused into one. The amalgamated institution is described in the Madras Directory of 1857, as follows: "There is a Seminary and College, under the direction of the Fathers of the Society of Jesus. The Marathi, Portuguese, English and Latin languages are taught; also Arithmetic, Geography, History and Music, Rhetoric, Philosophy, Theology (Dogmatic and Moral) and Canon Law. The students are about 85 including 15 seminarists." The Orphanage of the Bombay Archdiocese (European and native combined) had its beginnings in 1852, when Bishop Hartmann was Vicar Apostolic. It was first located at Parel under the care of some Carmelite Fathers. In 1855 the Capuchins succeeded the Carmelites at Parel and in 1857 the Orphanage was transferred to Nesbit Lane, Byculla. On the 25th November 1857, Fr. Joseph Willy, S.J., was appointed its Superior. But on 13 August 1859, a separation took place. The European orphans were sent to Mazagon; the Indian orphans remained at Byculla, whence they went every day to school at Mazagon. Fr. Willy remained behind with the native orphans as their Superior and Chaplain of St. Anne's. In October 1859, Fr. Willy was sent to Karachi and Fr. Esseiva was appointed to fill the gap until Fr. Joseph Weber took charge of the Orphanage in February 1860. During the three years of his stewardship, the number of native orphans rose from 33 to 140. About the end of May 1863, the Seminary was transferred from Bandra to Cavel and its place was occupied by the Boy's Native Orphanage which was shifted from Byculla on the 8th June 1863. Such was the beginning of St. Stanislau's Orphanage in Bandra. When the boys from Byculla arrived at Bandra, there was only one solitary house to welcome them the old St. Peter's Church, a large square building, partly two-storeyed, half church, half residence. Above the Chapel was a hall 100 x 75 feet used as study hall, refectory and class rooms with a couple of residential rooms for the Fathers; above this, directly under the roof, was the dormitory. Prior to the arrival of the orphans there was already a parish school, as we have seen, which had been started in 1852 and was merged with the Seminary that was transferred back from Surat. This school continued to function as a kind of Apostolic School for youngsters, after the senior students had moved to Cavel in May 1863. The boys of St. Aloysius and the orphans from Byculla who formed the nucleus of St. Stanislaus were now taught together. In 1868 the parish school was amalgamated and absorbed into St. Stanislaus School and Orphanage. [edit] Development during the first 50 years At various times down to 1855 new plots were added to the original grounds and new buildings were erected. In 1867 a second storey was added to the old building. About the same time the Industrial workshop was erected. In 1873 an outlying wing was added for use as the Boy's Refectory and Infirmary. In 1888 a separate kitchen was built. In 1904 the back wing or Red Building parallel to a part of Waroda Road, was erected to provide class-rooms and a dormitory for paying boarders. In 1913 the de Mello House, facing Waroda Road was purchased and converted into an Infirmary. At the same time the Bombilwadi plot was bought in order to extend the playing ground eastwards. Wine Street/High Street - Bristol at War 1940 The Dutch House this 17th century building once stood on the corner of Wine Street it was reduced to a charred skeleton and for safety's sake it had to be pulled down. The Dutch House was Bristol’s best-known landmark before the Blitz. By 1732 it was the house of John Vaughan, a goldsmith, in 1810 it became the Castle Bank, in 1826 the Stuckey’s Bank; and by 1855 it was occupied by Mr Tilly the Hatter (he first called it Dutch House though it has no connection with Holland). In 1908 it was saved from demolition by the Lord Mayor’s casting vote. During the 1930s it housed the Irish Linen and Hosiery Association but was pulled down after being seriously bombed in 1940. Extracts from the Western Daily Press Bristol From 7th June 1940 to 16th August 1944 June 25 1940 Shortly after midnight the first H.E. bomb fell among a few old houses and shops near Champion & Davies’ factory in Lower Maudlin Street. The factory itself, which was being used as a Red Cross depot, was hit by another bomb. A further attack was made on Knowle about 1.30 a.m. and bombs also fell in parts of St. George and Bedminster. Districts affected were mainly St. Philip’s, St. Paul’s and Brislington. Objective of this raid was possibly Temple Meads Station as nine H.E’s fell on railway property - two failed to explode. Other unexploded bombs were located at Temple Gate and Victoria Street. Bristol’s first air raid lasted from 12.10 a.m. until 2.35. Five people were killed, 14 seriously injured and 19 slightly injured. September 7 1940 Although there was no 'red' warning, five bombs were dropped during the day near Bristol Cathedral, one making a direct hit on the Cathedral School, injuring the Headmaster (the Rev. H. A. Watts). September 25 1940 The Luftwaffe’s objective was the Bristol Aeroplane Works: flying in almost perfect formation they arrived over the city at 11.40, made straight for the works, and found them completely at their mercy. In 45 terror-filled seconds they let loose 168 bombs, causing a high death-roll and much havoc. Blenheims, Beauforts and Beaufighters were being constructed at the B.A.C. at the time, and although the German News Agency put out the claim, 'This factory will not produce many more aircraft', in actual fact only eight planes were so seriously damaged as to be irreparable. September 27 1940 On this day, two days after the devastating attacks on the Aeroplane Works, the Germans came over with the same intentions. At about 11.30 a force of about nine bombers, accompanied by fighters, came over the city, but a squadron of Hurricanes was waiting for them. A.A. guns were in action as well, and the formation was dispersed before it could reach its target. Regardless of the danger, crowds of people came out in the streets to watch the 'dog fights' taking place in the sky. November 24 1940 At 6.21 the sirens blared their warning. They did not sound ‘Raiders Passed' until eight minutes past midnight - nearly six hours of slaughter, desolation and ruin. As soon as the raiders came over, the skies were illuminated by the incandescent glare of scores of flares. In a matter of seconds, incendiaries and high explosives hurtled down to earth. It was afterwards reckoned that 60 enemy planes were responsible for lying waste to so much of the city. Their tactics appeared to be to fly over the city two or three at a time at regular intervals to unleash their cargo of death and destruction. The majority of the bombs were incendiary, including a new type of explosive incendiary, but they were not without their quota of high explosives. Some were of an extremely large calibre, as could be judged by the huge craters in Thomas Street and Wells Road. Totterdown. The heart of the city from Broad Quay to Old Market bore the brunt of the raid, especially St James’s Barton and St. Philip’s and in Clifton, Bedminster, Knowle, and St. George. The intensity of the raid can be gauged by the following summary of the better-known buildings and streets which were destroyed. They included the Museum, and part of the Art Gallery; a portion of the University, including the Great Hall, the Princes Theatre; St Anselm’s Church; Clifton Parish Church; the Preparatory School of Bristol Grammar School; and Freemason’s Hall. Shopping districts presented scenes of in-describable desolation - Lennards’ buildings and many premises in Queen’s Road became nothing more than heaps of rubble, while on either side of Park Street scarcely a shop was left intact. Shops in College Green and various premises in Canons’ Marsh, also, were demolished, But it was the centre of the city which suffered the worst: from Marsh Street and Nicholas Street, High Street, Bridge Street, Mary-le-Port Street, Wine Street, Castle Street, Union Street, and Broadmead (some of these streets were totally destroyed), Barr Street, the Barton, and Stokes Croft, Such well-known buildings as the Old Dutch House, the Fish Market, SI, Nicholas Churc Similar posts: law degree in australia human resources degree program degree in islamic studies university degree course on line graduate degree public relations degree canada sports management online degree honours bachelor of arts degree degree kinesiology |

Don't take my Kodachrome colors away This is what happens when you do "bad" things involving Kodachrome film and Kodak HC-110. ;-) Speaking of Kodachrome, I found this excerpt from an essay on the history of Kodachrome both interesting and relevant. It is a bit long, but worth reading and thinking about. Excerpt taken from: Kodachrome - The American invention of our world 1939-1959. But even more important in terms of this book, from 1939 onward Kodachrome has had good dark-storage image permanence combined with total freedom from yellowish stain formation over time. The overall image stability of current Process K-14 Kodachrome film is better than any color film ever made. Laboratory tests have shown that the least stable image dye - yellow - will fade only about 20 percent in 185 years when stored in the dark at 75 degrees F and 40 percent RH. However, the Kodacolor negative and print process introduced in 1942 had such poor permanence that not a single Kodacolor print from 1942 to the mid-1950's has survived in anything other than a faded yellow-orange stained ghost of the original. Kodak Ektachrome transparency film did not fare much better in the the early years following its debut in 1946. Only the Kodachrome images from the 1940s and '50s remain today in largely unfaded condition, which has made this book possible. When one is lucky enough to encounter a Kodachrome transparency in a historical collection, it is like finding a brilliantly colored gem from the distant past. The sadly faded and stained Ektachrome, Agfachrome, and Anscochrome transparencies from the period all pale by comparison. From the beginning of the color era, it was Kodak's intent to convert as much of the market as possible from black-and-white photography to more profitable color films and prints. Unfortunately the permanence of displayed color prints, with images composed of organic dyes, was no match for the exceptional stability of fiber-base black-and-white prints, whose silver images remain essentially unaffected by even prolonged exposure to light. Although Kodak was long aware of the superior image permanence of Kodachrome - and the relatively poor stability of its other color films - the company kept it a closely guarded secret until the mid-1970s. Kodak felt if it provided image-permanence data for Kodachrome - its most stable color film - photographers would ask how other color products such as Kodacolor negatives and prints, and user-processable Ektachrome transparency films compared. And that was something the company did not want to reveal. Ansco, Agfa, Fuji, Konica, and other manufacturers followed Kodak's example in maintaining silence on the subject of color-film permanence. These photographic manufacturers understood that amateur photographers would in time become the largest market for color films and papers. All transparency films have limited exposure latitude; for satisfactory results, cameras with adjustable shutter speeds and lens apertures, in the hands of fairly dedicated photographers, must be used. In the days prior to the fairly recent availability of automated, electronically controlled cameras, the requirement for precise exposure meant that Kodachrome and other transparency films would not be used in amateur fixed-exposure, roll-film box cameras. These were the mass-market cameras of the time, and only the wide exposure latitude of negative films, and the density and color corrections made during printing, allowed for their wide use and popularity. Kodak's color-permanency secrecy policy remain in effect for more than 40 years, with far-reaching ramifications. For example, because the company could not advertise improvements in image stability, there was little incentive to produce more stable color films and papers. Had photographers in the 1940s and '50s been aware of the superior performance of Kodachrome film, many would have continued using it instead of changing to much less stable color materials. In addition, the market for Kodachrome would have grown, which would have spurred research and development on more advanced Kodachrome films. Furthermore, Kodak would have been motivated to improve the permanence of its other materials, especially color motion-picture films and 16mm Ektachrome news films. When Kodak replaced large-format Kodachrome sheet films in the early 1950s with Ektachrome sheet films, photographers were unaware that the new films faded in the dark at least 20 times faster than the discontinued Kodachrome. The unfortunate results of this product downgrading can be seen in the severely faded period Ektachromes in institutional collections, such as those at Life (AOL Time Warner Inc., in New York), Vogue, Corbis, (including the Bettman Archive), the Library of Congress, George Eastman House, and individual collections all over the world. Kodak's silence about image permanence had another tragic result: unaware of how rapidly specific types of color film and print materials w 25 Things About Me 1) I met my sweetie Celia in a chat room. It was during a time where I was trying to figure out a lot of things. When I met her it all changed. It gave me a reason to be okay and do more. Now it's been nothing but amazing, she has opened my eyes to new things and really has shown me real love. I love Celia more then anything in the world and I couldn't imagine my life without her. 2) I don't have a lot of regrets, but one thing I regret the most is growing apart with my grandma the last few years of her life. She had a great impact more then anyone in my family in me growing up and I regret things I said and didn't do. I love her and I miss her each day and I wish I would have done things differently. 3) I was destined to a life with computers but I choose to go down a different path. I'm certified in several programming languages, certified in Microsoft programs and computer repair. I instead choose to go to school History, I love it and I wanted to do it because I didn't want to be stuck doing something I like but didn't love. 4) I'm a huge football fan and I was in my own opinion a good player, but I was afraid of doing tough work and I decided it wasn't for me and got out of it. I believe had I continued I could have been an all-state player and gone on to a major university as a player. Not a regret, but I do miss playing football, it feels right. 5) I'm not a big movie fan. I don't own everything in the world like some people I see at stores with buckets of movies they haven't even seen before. I owned only 1 movies before Celia and I met and now I own all my favorites because of her. 6) I always wanted a WWF toy wrestling ring and I never got it. Although my mom tried to find it, she never could. I always wanted the original one. I still own my toy wrestlers and once in a while I sneak in a match for the ages. 7) I'm a huge Star Trek fan. I blame my brother Jaime who got me to love Star Trek: TNG. I'm a fan from anything TNG and on, I'm not a major fan of the original series but I do love Shatner! 8) When I went to Florida, Jodie Foster was signing autographs, she looked up at me and gave me a look, we had a moment. (Now shes a lesbian... sadness....) 9) I hate school, I really do. I never wanted to do it and I hated being around the building, but for some strange reason, I'm going to school to teach history to high school students... go figure... 10) I have very bad ears. I've had 3 surgeries for ear tube insertion and repair to my ear drum. I don't have the best of hearing because of it and I tend to get ear infections easily, but it's amazing how I can hear tiny whispers from long distances. 11) When I was in High school, I took an official IQ test and scored a 128. Not sure how lol, but I did score it from an official test and official from the IQ board. 12) I don't get cold easily. Like my family, mostly brother Kiko (RIP) I don't easily get cold and if you touched my hands or arms, you would feel them to very hot or warm even if the cold air was touching. 13) I like to come up with nicknames. I have several hundred for my sweetie Celia and my dogs, Cupcake and Oreo. 14) I'm OCD about time. I like to think I have a understanding of it and a master of it lol. I hate... hate being late for things and I drive my love insane due to it, but it's just something about me. 15) Although I'm going to school for my degree in History and Secondary Education, I really wanted to study Parapsychology as I know that's what I really would be happy doing. 16) Although there is no history on me, I can say that I was one of the first podcasters in the history of the internet. I produced a radio show with guests and music for 3 years, broadcasting live since 1998-2001 and produced over 100 shows for 2 different shows. 17) I know this is gross for some, don't know why. But when I eat Cheetos or Pizza, I like drinking a tall glass of milk! 18) I've never been in a fight. I almost was in one, but I decided to walk away. I'm not a violent person, but let me catch you doing something to someone that's wrong and you better hope there is someone there willing to stop me. 19) I love Johnny Cash. Not just because of his music, but because of the man he was. He was loyal and he was great, and an inspiration. 20) Believe this or not, I worked for a music producing company for 4 years and I was able to listen to music before it reached the airwaves. I can say I was one of the few who helped push and discover Norah Jones and The Ataris. 21) I'm scared of looking at large radio towers. Any large structure with metal beams and look odd and give me the willy's. I'm not afraid of heights, but looking at them scares me. 22) I was accepted into Art School when I came out of high school and I declined the offer, and I don't regret it. 23) I LOVE THE GHOSTBUSTERS!!! I love the movies, the merchandise and I'm dying to buy the Xbox 360 Video Game and can't wait for a new movie! LOVE THEM! 24) I'm extremely p Similar posts: humber college degree programs university of alberta after degree masters degrees nursing bachelor degree in business administration on line graduate degree teachers degrees best online computer science degree online legal studies degrees online associate accounting degree exercise science degree |
