Western Union Building Tribeca, Manhattan, New York City, United States of America The Western Union Building (1928-30), designed by Ralph Walker, one of New York's foremost architects of the period, is a recognized achievement in modernistic skyscraper design. The building is characteristic of a group of communications buildings designed by Walker in the late 1920s, primarily for the telephone companies, in which he developed a distinctive design approach related to the contemporary Art Deco style. The design of the Western Union Building was influenced by the work of the German and Dutch Expressionist architects, and drew upon Walker's well-defined design theory emphasizing harmony and unity. The integrated aesthetic of form, material, and ornamentation incorporates such elements as patterned brickwork, dramatic entrances, faceted wall planes and trim, and complex and asymmetrical massing. The innovative, cliff-like form of the Western Union Building departs from the shape of the site and includes a low screen that conforms to the Hudson Street lot line. The exterior brick walls are carefully articulated in a textured, curtain-like manner, parting as proscenium-like openings at the ground story. The building was among the first to have a graded brick color scheme, from dark at the bottom to light at the upper stories, which was "a pleasing exaggeration of the natural play of light." Commissioned by Newcomb Carlton, president of the Western Union Telegraph Company, the new headquarters building allowed the consolidation of all operations in one location, "the largest telegraph building in the world"; the modernistic design helped to reestablish a corporate identity for Western Union after its dominance by the American Telephone & Telegraph Company. The Western Union Building remains in use as a communications center, housing both equipment and offices. With the design of the Western Union Building, described at the time of its construction as representing the modern American style of architecture, Walker moved beyond the model of the Barclay-Vesey Building, with its complex ornamental program, toward the expressionistic vocabulary of the later communications buildings. The building stands apart from the other buildings in the series in its exclusive use of brick for ornamentation of both the exterior of the building and the public interior spaces of the first story. The design of the Western Union Building is remarkably integrated -- the forms, the materials, and the ornament -- and demonstrates Walker's achievement of harmony and unity in skyscraper design. The massing of the Western Union Building belies the dictates of the building's irregularly• shaped lot; apparently Walker was responding to Lewis Mumford's criticism of the 'awry' shape of the Barclay-Vesey Building due to its filling the entire irregular site. Walker later wrote of the lasting effects of Mumford's comments and his 'early appreciation that the shape of the lot did not necessarily control the form of the building' and stated that 'a building could take its own form regardless of the land below.'20 He employed this idea in the form of the Western Union Building, and developed an inventive massing solution which departs considerably from the footprint of the lot. At the Hudson Street end of the block, three slabs, which rise sheerly to the first setbacks, meet the angled Hudson Street lot line behind a two-story screen -- a series of opening enframements -- that serves as a traditional base for the main facade. The massed piers of the screen ground the soaring corner piers 6 of the two northern slabs. The architect explained that the adoption of this unusual scheme was due to 'the superior massing of rectangular forms and through the powerful verticals rising, without interruption, at the corners of each setbaCk.'" With highly visible, vertically articulated facades on all four sides, the Western Union Building, 'a huge red rock projecting out of the city,'" is solid and cliff-like, suggesting an interest in the natural and irregular forms of palisades and cliffs as shapes to be replicated in building masses. Upon close inspection, the building is a complex and sculpted form, with greater irregularity at the Hudson Street end of the building; in contrast, the stepped massing of the West Broadway end of the building is relatively straightforward and symmetrical. with the setbacks extending along most of the long north and south facades. A low tower, which rises only slightly above a central slab, unites the mass of the building." The brick exterior walls of the Western Union Building can be likened to curtains which part at the major openings at the street level. The contemporary critic Paul T. Frankl wrote of such 'brick tapestries hung from the sky,' 'mosaics of colored stone or tinted brick' which emphasized the natural beauty of the material and were free from unnecessary detail." Incorporated into the curta Fred Tunstall 1919 Fred Tunstall Born 9 May 1891 in Melrose MA Influential Harlem jazz pianist. He played with Lucille Hegamin’s Blue Flame Syncopaters (and other groups) in the early 1920s. Tunstall travelled to France on a musical engagement in 1919. “Fred Tunstall was a real dandy. I remember he had a Norfolk coat with eighty-two pleats in the back. When he sat down to the piano, he’d slump a little in a half hunch, and those pleats would fan out real pretty. The coat was long and flared at the waist. It had a very short belt sewn on the back. His pants were very tight. He had a long neck, so he wore a high stiff collar that came up under his chin with a purple tie. A silk handkerchief was always draped very carefully in his breast pocket. His side view was very striking.” Collected Works: A Journal of Jazz 1954-2001 by Whitney Balliett Similar posts: long drapery rods double drapery rod brackets lamp oval shade glow in the dark shutter shades window door awnings commercial sun shade rv awning repairs |

her winter bed that i sewed up this morning. it will be a nice surprise when she gets home from school. the curtains should keep in the body heat and make a nice sleeping area for her. she loves the scroll bed and has been sleeping there for a week. i had to make bumpers because she presses her head against the bars and gets scrolly marks on her forehead. the sides come down, but one night she fell out so she asked me to put the side up. Here's Where I Sleep Now! I moved the bed into the corner and turned it into a sort of lounge-esque situation. I love, love, love it, and sleeping there makes me feel surprisingly secure and comfy. WIP - Mizuki's Living Room I cannot wait any longer! My vanity wants the world to know (and possibly get excited about) my as yet unfinished living room for my Momokos. (As they are supposedly all living with Mizuki, it's her living room, then). I couldn't find ANYTHING that I could use that I liked (and could afford), so lots of things here are made by me. The couch, for example. And some may recognize the bench from the calendar (I added planks for the lower shelf). The window had been put together from 2 standard ones, the bamboo blinds are from leftover bamboo cover that I've used for the sampan, and the "glass" bookshelf is formerly plastic bead storage. I'll take better pics of what's ON the shelves later. Especially since now I don't think the bookshelf fits and so I'm making another to go with the bench, which will help carry the Oriental feel to the room. The room is still missing the curtains (the two antique buttons on the sides of the window are supposed to be pull-backs), the TV needs a better place to sit (probably I'll also make it), and there needs to be a rug or something, and maybe an armchair to go with the couch. Oh yes, and I need to hang up some pictures. Day 90 - Through The Blinds We have these funky bamboo blinds in our main room that makes everything look amberish outside. TWO OF THE LARGEST WINDOW UNITS ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET EARTH When people talk nostalgically about the importance of family, it is difficult to explain the set of conditions that I grew up with. Even when they hear stories of my early years they tend to insert the concept of their own father or the Gestalt of fatherhood. Even my closest friends have difficulty imaging how bizarre things were. My friend of 45 years, Kevin Madden, reveres my father to this day and speaks glowingly of him when the subject comes up. I loved my father in many ways but living with him was impossible. He was a lot of fun to be around under the right conditions, particularly when I got older and out from under his roof, but he was woefully remiss in his duties as a father and a husband, which made my life a lot more difficult than it might have been and robbed me of the luxury of naiveté and the irresponsibility of childhood. There comes a time at a very early age when saddled with an irresponsible father that you have to come to terms that your father is not a hero in the John Wayne mold or the wise Solomonic figure played by Robert Young in the television program Father Knows Best. It tends to distort ones vision of humanity at much too early of an age. By the time I was eighteen years old, I had long been disabused of any notion that my father, Alexander Liddle Macfeat Jr., was operating within the normal standards of societal behavior or even within the law. He was impossible to pin down on any subject and what explanations he did give were deliberately vague with the obvious intent to deceive. Various vehicles and items would inexplicably appear at the house only to disappear soon afterwards. After a while it made no sense to question him about anything since getting a straight answer out of him was like trying to capture helium in a bucket. He was on the other hand quite handsome, over six feet tall with gray hair that was combed straight back, slim but strong and he had a wonderful and spontaneous sense of humor that made him entertaining and charming. Although he was thoroughly irresponsible as a father he was generous in social settings. He was a particular favorite with women, often married, that kept him in a certain amount of trouble his entire life. As a very young boy I remember being told by a friend of his, Hal Robeson, that my father was a "man's man," which at the time made absolutely no sense to me. Despite Hal's analysis of the situation, Alexander would have to be considered a ladies man, perhaps a bit too successful with them considering his own marital status throughout much of his life. At the beginning of the summer I was nineteen and out of work, which unusual for me because I had been working every summer since my early teens. My father's drinking, gambling and womanizing often took precedence over providing for the family. I worked at an early age to ensure that I wasn't adversely affected by his unrepentant hedonism beyond having the utilities shut off and the house occasionally being put up for Sheriff's Sale. The majority of time in my last few years of living in the family home I was living there on my own. My parents would stop by to check in on occasion and stay there from time to time. I moved out of New Jersey as soon as was possible and was living in an apartment near the school I was attending, Philadelphia College of Art. I got a call from my father asking if I would be interested in helping him move a couple of air conditioners. He was generous as far as paying for a days work so I jumped at the chance. I didn't ask why he could possibly need two window units, since he was living in his girlfriend Doris' house which had central air conditioning and his answer would have inevitably been incomprehensible anyway. I took the 8:00 train to New Jersey and my father picked me up in his Ford pick up truck at the High Speed Line station closest to his house. We drove a short way and pulled into the large gravel parking lot of the local police station. I began to suspect something was suspicious given my father's aversion to the police and the fact that I knew that he was having an affair with the young and attractive girlfriend of the chief of this town's police. The chief was my father's age but neither young nor attractive. He was at least 350 pounds and lived with his mother his whole life. I suppose his girlfriend loved a man in a uniform or with power or some other perk because it wasn't for his looks or personality, which was downright surly. We pulled up to the back of the police station and knocked at the back door. It was answered by the man that used to do yard work for my father, Bobby Davis. Bobby was the maintenance man at the station and was a small guy but wiry, with forearms like Popeye the Sailor Man. He also had an enormous set of ears that stuck far off his head and was missing teeth. My father addressed Bobby because I couldn't understand a goddamn word that he said. He had a wicked speech impediment, but somehow A The Plastic Piece Doesn't Fit the Window Only one end of the big tube goes out the window, but the piece that keeps outside out and inside in is too long for the window.
