Milton Street Greenpoint, Brooklyn About the historic district: The Greenpoint Histrict District occupies a unique position among Brooklyn's historic districts. Unlike the middle-class neighborhoods of Brooklyn's "brownstone belt,—Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Park Slope— whose residents commuted to professional and white collar jobs in downtown Brooklyn or Manhattan, Greenpoint was intimately linked to Brooklyn's industrial development. Its residents worked in nearby factories, and its architecture reflects the varied nature of the neighborhood's occupants. The buildings include substantial rowhouses built for the owners and managers of nearby businesses and factories, more modest rowhouses and numerous flathouses (walk-up apartment houses) for the factory laborers, as well as a variety of commercial buildings on the streets where the residents shopped. Residential development of the area followed the advent of industry, the first of which was shipbuilding, located on the waterfront. The residential area grew inland from the waterfront. Perhaps because of the industrial character of the area, real estate developers were much less active in Greenpoint than in many other Brooklyn sections where it was common to find long rows of houses erected by developers for resale to middle-class occupants. Although there are examples of this in the district, particularly on the land originally owned by James R. Sparrow and his son (one of the rows they erected consists of twenty-one buildings), more often it was a single individual who bought one lot and had the house he intended to live in built on it. This is particularly so during the earliest period of growth in the area, prior to the Civil War. The buildings within the district also reflect the importance of the builder tradition in nineteenth-century American architecture. The role between the builder and the architect was not clearly defined until about the time of the Civil War. When the American Institute of Architects was founded in 1857, its members were the most prominent men in the field in the country. This professionalism did not filter down to less well-known practitioners until later in the century. The usual practice in Greenpoint and elsewhere in Brooklyn was for the owner of a piece of property to hire a builder, i.e., a mason or carpenter, to erect the house on the site. If the owner made particular design requirements, the builder might hire a draftsman to produce plans from which to work. But, because the vast majority of rowhouses have similar plans and construction, a practiced builder needed little outside aid. Also widely used were builders' guidebooks which gave practical advice on construction techniques to those in the building trade and often included plans for houses and designs for architectural details. Moreover, architectural elements such as foliate brackets, window and entrance enframements, and wooden doors, sashes, and shutters could be mass produced at local lumberyards and foundaries. Hence, many buildings within the district have nearly identical window and door lintels, cornices and iron railings. The ambiguous distinction between builder and architect is illustrated by two men who lived in the area: Thomas C. Smith and Frederick Weber. Smith, an important figure in the history of the district, had been trained as a builder and worked in that trade for nearly thirty years before retiring to Greenpoint where he had come into possession of a bankrupt porcelain factory. He purchased a large tract of land on Milton Street and over a period of years built on it. Since he retired from tne trade because of ill health, it is improbable that Smith acted as mason or carpenter on these houses but it is evident by comparision of interiorand exterior features that he was the architect who designed them. Frederick Weber, who is responsible for a number of buildings, is listed as a carpenter in the directories of the 1870s but, ten years later, he signs Brooklyn Buildings Department permits as an architect. Within the designated boundaries for the area, the buildings exhibit the architectural styles popular between 1850 and the end of the centuryT often executed in the vernacular builder tradition. The first buildings were erected in the early 1850s and were designed in the then current Italianate style or in a transitional style that combined elements of both the Greek Revival and the Italianate—a not uncommon practice in the builder tradition. The mixture of stylistic elements is particularly evident in the early tenements with"commercial ground floors on Franklin Street. The ground floors are trabeated granite and brick, based on the prototypical Tappan Store (1829) on Pearl Street in Manhattan that had set the standard for commercial architecture for twenty years. The upper floors are pierced by square-headed windows with two-over-two or six-over-six double-hung sash and cap molded lintels. (+4 in comments) It's around 2am Monday. I had just finished feeding the fish and watching them for a little while. I had noticed a couple of the snails were moving around under the sand. We have about 10 Lettered-Olive Snails. They're nocturnal and are usually buried under the sand. They only surface to eat. Anyway, I turned the light out and sat there for a few, watching to see if they would come up while I was there (just ambient room lighting). One surfaced and went right back down. Suddenly the 2 fish started spazzing out! I didn't know what was happening. Was something wrong in the water? I turned on the tank light and couldn't believe my eyes! Millions of little dots filled the water and about a hundred translucent egg casings the size of a pencil dot floated around. They're snail eggs & larvae. The fish are gobbling up everything they can so I don't know what if anything will survive. And my filter is going too, so some are getting sucked up. From what I read this is extremely rare! I'm so excited!!! And a little nervous. If they all die, will it pollute the water? If some survive, will it be too much of a strain on the tank, water, food, etc.? Dd this happen because they're happy or about to die? I don't know what to do now but it's soooooo cool! :-) I tried to take some photos of the event. They're hard to see though. Marbles The pride and joy of Osaka Aquarium--one of the world's biggest tanks, housing a breathtaking whale shark. He's one of only a handful of whale sharks in captivity in the world. The name whale shark comes from both his size and his crazy whale-like eating habits--he just opens his mouth all the way up and swims along, filtering out krill, plankton, and the like. Whale sharks are the largest shark in the world, yet they pose no threat to humans. Makes you stop and think about how we make such snap judgments like "sharks are dangerous." Stereotypes are bad, even for the animal world! Watershed Crystal With due apologies to Waterford Crystal, of course, lol! Since acquiring a Sony NEX-5 camera five weeks ago, I have shot a variety of scenes with it, with both the Sony stock lenses and lenses made by Nikon, and especially Leica M lenses. I have shared some of the more interesting images on flickr over the past month. Naturally, I was curious to see how the exact same lens performed on two different cameras, in particular, how images from the same lens compared between the Sony NEX-5 and the Leica M9. The Leica M9 has a full size CCD sensor, but is a rangefinder camera with a small viewfinder that is partially blocked by all fast M lenses. This makes focusing and composition very difficult. The rangefinder limits focusing to the center of the screen, so it is impossible to accurately focus on a subject that is off-center. The M9 is also limited to a max ISO of 1250. The Sony NEX-5 is far superior for both composition and focusing, especially with its live view capability. You can compose first, then sharply focus something in a corner with no problem. It is good in all situations except when it is very bright, enough to make the LCD on the back not viewable. But the NEX-5 has a smaller CMOS sensor. In theory, the NEX can go to ISO 6400, but in practice, it is clean up to 640, then starts getting noisy. And typical of Japanese cameras, the Sony has a lot of other goodies, including panorama stitching, built-in automatic HDR, automatic face recognition, auto programmed exposure by selecting the right mode while using the Sony lenses (these features works exceptionally well), macro, a tiny add-on flash, and of course, full HD video that is excellent, including a neat optional long-range stereo microphone. The Leica M9 has none of these goodies but a pure 35mm range-finder photographer would consider all of that meaningless distractions. But for the rest of humanity, they are very nice features to have. Oh, by the way - the Leica M9 costs about 14 times(!) what the Sony NEX-5 costs. So can the little Sony give the Leica a run for its money? The short answer is, the NEX-5 comes surprisingly close. I ran several comparisons, and I am very impressed by how good the Sony is. I wish I could publish all the comparisons, but it takes too much time and effort. It is also very tough to get exactly the same scene imaged with both cameras. Here is one of the more illustrative examples. The top photo above is the scene, more or less, in its entirety, shot with the Sony NEX-5, with the Leica Noctilux-M 50/0.95 lens @ f/0.95. The same photo is repeated below in the comment section, at 500 pixels wide, which is the most flickr allows in comments. Below that is the same scene from the Leica M9. Both images were hand held. so the two images did not come out with the exact same perspective. But they should be sufficiently similar to provide an idea. I have also included a couple of crops from both images, at actual pixel size. Both Leica crops are actual 100% pixels. The two Sony crops were slightly downsampled to match the Leica crops, since within the smaller overall image area, the Sony does have slightly more pixels. Bottom line: when viewed in isolation, the image from the Sony is very good and very acceptable. But Einstein was right - everything is relative. In the town of billionaires, the mere millionaire is but a servant. Placed next to an image from the Leica small and subtle improvements in the image quality can be seen. The colors are richer, the dynamic range and shadow details are superior, and most surprising - the image from the Leica at ISO 800 is far cleaner than the image from the Sony at ISO 640. The Sony CMOS sensor is evidently much noisier, in spite of its noise filtering. The Sony rendering is also harsh compared to the buttery smooth rendering by the Leica sensor, in spite of the Leica having no AA filtering. Is that worth 14 times the price? For small prints (5" x 7") or Web consumption (e.g., on flickr), the answer is no, I don't think so. The Sony is just as good as the Leica. The vast majority of notebook computers are incapable of even showing 50% of the complete Adobe color gamut, so most people will not be able to tell the difference. (Although, thanks to the Apple iPad and iPhone 4, that is changing - colors on Apple displays are far superior to Windows machines, and people will suddenly start appreciating better photos, I think!). But with high end displays or for making prints of 8" x 11" or bigger, the larger sensor size of the M9 is clearly much superior. What price one is willing to pay for it is up to individual needs and priorities. DSC00350 Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro Been a Mac user since 2003, but am suitably impressed with Windows 7. I was part of the extensive beta test that Microsoft ran over the last several months, and was more than happy enough to follow up with a superbly priced pre-order. 7 isn't revolutionary, and there's no way it's going to become my OS of choice over OS X. However, one of my biggest bugbears about life within Windows - the infernal taskbar - has been supremely improved with the new one in 7, which is similar to OS X's dock but in my view feels superior. It is still Windows, and I still feel that non-gaming home users should give a Mac a go, but for PC users running Vista, or with a newish computer running XP, I urge you to give 7 a try. It is refined, it feels like it was designed with care, and is the antithesis of everything I hated about Microsoft at its height of arrogance, which was exemplified with the catastrophic Windows ME. My precious, which the doll’s body might be broken in parts. Therefore, the light shows the doll. It means light reveled where is the doll. Except for the room’s light, all areas were dark and I couldn’t see anything, but instead of light in a room, I could found the doll and I found the fact that arrangement of doll. On the photography, it has light and subject. Also the photography include the intention that reason the photo, which light reveled the doll. If light didn’t reveled where is the doll, my precious would be broken down by my feet in dark. 20071206160008-0568 Driving through the flat delta land can get really dreary.
