BLOMIDON INN Explored Highest position: 138 on Friday, August 15, 2008 I haven't managed to go through my vacation pics but I have to post something as I have been threatened with tremendous cruelty otherwise ;) The Blomidon Inn is an excellent place to eat and stay its located in Wolfville, part of Nova Scotia's famous Annapolis Valley. THE HISTORY OF THE BLOMIDON INN On April 1, 1881 , Rufus Burgess purchased for $1,400, the lot on which the Blomidon Inn now stands. In the 1871 census, Burgess was listed as a merchant who owned 80 shares in ships. He soon learned to maximize his profits by building his own ships and operating them until they could be sold. The sales usually occurred in a foreign port such as London, England or perhaps in Scandinavia. Rufus built four tall ships between 1874 and 1880. Following the Purchase of the land Rufus proceeded to build Perth House. His wife, Georgie's family, had come from Perth , Scotland . This gave Burgess the opportunity to make a public display of his success and to provide a fine home for his family's enjoyment. In his mansion, he used teak and mahogany for wainscots, mantels, and staircases. There were marble fireplaces and gold gilt mirrors. A local German artist was invited to paint a ceiling mural of a ship wreck. The house was just as grand on the outside with the Mansard Roof (the same roof style found on Seminary Hall - the oldest building on Acadia University's campus), the widow's walk, the iron front gate, the playing court, the sun dial, and the splendid rose gardens on the East side of the house. During his tenure at Perth Place, Rufus would build an additional nineteen tall ships, the Canada , being the most spectacular. On July 7, 1892 The Morning Herald in Halifax announced that 5000 "delighted" spectators had witnessed the launching at Kingsport of the CANADA , "the largest Vessel Ever Built in the Dominion ( Canada )". Cox was the master builder and Burgess was the proud owner. Burgess died on December 22, 1905 at the age of 79. His wife Georgie died in 1911. By 1915, the estate was still not settled. Eastern Trust was ordered to handle the will. On March 9 th , they placed the following ad in The Halifax Herald. The ad cost $7.00. FOR SALE BY PUBLIC AUCTION On the premises April 20 th , 1915 , at 11 am , that valuable and commodious residential property at Wolfville, owned by the estate of the late C.R. Burgess, having frontage of 200 feet on side street and 150 feet on Main Street , consisting of about 4? acres, with dwelling of 20 rooms, furnace heated, and beautifully finished. Barn, Storehouse, Ice House, and orchard of about 200 trees, principally apples of the winter varieties. The property was purchased by W. H. Chase for $4,700. augusta missouri apple gate B&B An historic 1865 building has been nicely restored into the Apple Gate Inn, an early American-style Bed & Breakfast. The hosts are Bob and Lynn. Saratoga Inn Shower Interface One of my bizarre photo interests are the variety of user interfaces presented in hotel showers. Here at the Inn at Saratogo (near San Jose), just in case people are nor intuitively familiar with world wide cultural references of "how water on left", they provide strong clues using the kinds of stickers used to put address numbers on your house. Worse, the knobs rotating is i different directions; while for symmetry it might be claver, to get more hot, you have to rotate the knob left and to get more cold, you rotate right. it took a good 8 minutes of wasting water to figure out this interface. Escape to Falmouth When a feisty, Cherokee beauty and a strong-willed, male, runaway slave lock their destinies together in a headlong pursuit of freedom, they unleash forces that deny their liberty, threaten to destroy their love and propel them into dangerous exploits. Displaced by a presidential edict in 1838, Awanessa, and her entire Cherokee tribe, must leave their homeland in the Southeast United States to march thousands of miles on the arduous Trail of Tears. Meanwhile, Awanessa wages a personal battle that leads her to rescue Jeremiah, a slave on the run, who is being attacked by trackers and bloodhounds. As the couple's lives intersect, they yearn to find their place in an intolerant world. In a desperate race for survival, Awanessa and Jeremiah flee the Smoky Mountains to the Okenofee Swamps of Georgia with the Seminoles, and later, St. Augustine, Florida. By a twist of fate, they end up in post-emancipation Jamaica where they discover a new world of possibilities while confronting jealousy, mistrust, deception and obeah. As they boldly stake a claim for their future, vengeance strikes, loyalties are put to the test, a life is perilously at risk and they wonder, what price will they have to pay for freedom? (16) Pandora Inn, Cornwall This is (or was) the wonderfully situated and atmospheric Pandora Inn in Restronguet Creek, near Falmouth in Cornwall. Dating from the 13th century, this pub has a strange association with the Bounty saga because of its name. Even recently, owners have claimed the pub was once owned by Captain Edward Edwards who changed its name from The Ship to the Pandora. This is without any evidence whatsoever and its seems certain that Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Edwards never owned the pub or even visited Cornwall. However, the pub signs are paintings of Edwards's ship, which was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef, and inside the pub there is (or was) a handsome model of the Pandora dating from around 1795. On 24 March 2011, exactly two weeks after my visit, the pub was destroyed in a fire. Lets take a little walk.... Location: Colmar Tropicale, Berjaya Resort Bukit Tinggi. Off the Karak Highway, at Bukit Tinggi exit. Look for the signboard to Berjaya Hills Resort, Estimated 40 minutes drive from downtown KL. DESCRIPTION: The resort takes into form the replica of the original town of Colmar in France (in the Alsace wine region). Hence Colmar Tropicale signifies its location being in the tropical setting of Malaysia. Being 40 minutes away from KL, this resort can be filled with day trippers. They are not coming for free though. An entry fee of RM10 per person is due at the entrance (a 4-in-1 entrance fee for Colmar Tropicale itself, the Japanese Garden, the Japanese Tea House and the Rabbit Park). If you are a hotel staying guest, the admission will be waived. There are about 250 room units sporadically located in 8 different architecturally marvelous buildings - especially the roof tiles and the European-like cobblestone paths. Also the rooms are decorated with unmistakably French influence - iron deco, carvings, pastel-coloured schemes, etc. Just having a leisure time with my kids there yesterday. Amazing development i must say, but its lively only during the weekends. Its sad to see most of the surrounding "fort" were closed due to the lack of tourist and maintenance cost. Pleasant place to lazy around, and be prepare to pay everything 3-4 times higher...:D Colmar Windows I took this on a walk in Colmar, France. It's located in the Alsace region that boarders Germany. (And in many ways feels more like Germany than France.) We walked everywhere. We gave ourselves a self-guided tour that included Petit Venise (Little Venice). We almost missed it for it is indeed petite. And we stayed at majestic palace hotel florianopolis, a three-star hotel that afforded us a little luxury. It had a little pool in the basement with a bridge going over it to connect to the rest of the gym/spa area. And at night we watched bits of dubbed American movies. There was a tiny restaurant down the street that Anne Marie and I ate at twice. It had only one waiter. We never saw anyone else working there. The chef, we believe, cooked in a kitchen in the basement and sent up the orders in a dumbwaiter. NYC - JFK Airport: TWA Flight Center The TWA Flight Center, or Trans World Airlines Flight Center, opened in 1962 as standalone terminal designed by Eero Saarinen for Trans World Airlines (TWA) at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), then known as New York International Airport, Anderson Field, but commonly known as Idlewild. In 1969, the terminal received a new departure-arrival concourse and lounge, known as Flight Wing One, designed by Roche-Dinkeloo. Following TWA's financial deterioration and eventual purchase by American Airlines in 1991, the terminal ended operations in October 2001. While portions of the original complex have been demolished, the vacant landmarked head house still sits in front of the JetBlue Airway's Terminal 5 (T5), which was completed in 2008. Adaptive reuse proposals for the head house have included a restaurant, a conference center, and a hotel lobby. Saarinen's Detroit-based firm was commissioned in 1956 to design the terminal. Given the directive to capture "the spirit of flight", the design featured a prominent wing-shaped thin shell roof over the main terminal, unusual tube-shaped departure-arrival corridors originally wrapped in red carpet and expansive windows that highlighted departing and arriving jets. The terminal was also the first with enclosed passenger jetways, closed circuit television, a central public address system, baggage carousels, electronic schedule board and baggage scales, and the satellite clustering of gates away from the main terminal. The terminal was finally dedicated on May 28, 1962--a year after Saarinen's death--and he received the AIA Gold Medal posthumously that year. John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK, FAA LID: JFK) is busiest international air passenger gateway to the United States, handling more international traffic than any other airport in North America and the leading freight gateway to the country by value of shipments. Originally known as Idelwild Airport, after the Idlewild golf course it displaced when construction started in 1943, it was renamed Major General Alexander E. Anderson Airport that same yaer, and then to New York International Airport, Anderson Field in 1948. The airport was renamed after John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, in 1964. Over ninety airlines operate out of JFK, and it currenly serves as the base of operations for JetBlue Airways and a international gateway hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. In the past, it has been a hub for Eastern Air Lines, National Airlines, Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) and Trans World Airlines (TWA). The Trans World Flight Center was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1994. The ground floor interior was separately designated, also in 1994. In 2007, the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport was ranked #115 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list. New Orleans Current Music Venues 01 - Hotel Monteleone Address: 214 Royal Street, New Orleans (French Quarter). Dates: 1950s to date. The hotel was built in 1886. Since the 1950s there has been music in two different rooms. The Skylight (sometimes written as Skylite) Room was on the roof. Louis Prima had a residency here in the early 1970s after he returned to New Orleans from Las Vegas. In 1974 the lease was handed over to the Dukes of Dixieland, who remain at what was called “Dukes’ Place” until 1985 when they moved to their own club. The other location was a supper nightclub, the Swan Room, on the ground level (apparently in the room adjacent to the Carousel Bar). It is said that Liberace performed here in the early 1950s (although it is not entirely clear whether he played the piano here as a performer or a guest). Singers, comedians and ventriloquists all appeared in the Swan Room. In recent years there has been a pianist in the Carousel Bar (installed in 1949, the seats round the bar rotate every 15 minutes). John Autin ended a 8 year residency in May 2011 as the Bar closed for refurbishments. I saw John Autin and Jon Cleary here in May 2007. Royal St by Monteleone hotel, New Orleans The first images I've taken with my Super Shooter instant polaroid camera. I have to thank my friend Lenny for pointing me in the right direction in regards to film and giving me a minor education in the matter as I learned photography in the digital age, my knowledge of film was nil. It's fun to be able to take an image and get instant gratification although it is like shooting in the dark since there is no review or in camera adjusting. The hardest things to master are of course the focus distance and the exposure. Film sure ain't cheap. At $11 for 10 pictures you gotta make everyone count! Warren Hotel (as Colonial Hotel), Warren, Ohio, circa 1920 A long-awaited submission from Dave Burgess. He did a lot of research into this and his article follows: "My sources for the following notes are a Warren Tribune article about hotels, published on 10 March 1936 and the article describing the Warren Hotel fire published a few days before. The photo of the Colonial Hotel was found in a vertical file at the County Library on Mahoning Ave. Images of the Gilmore House (next to the Pioneer bldg) and the view of the Warren Hotel exists elsewhere on this Downtown Warren site. Shown above is the Colonial Hotel, circ 1920, that occupied a lot on the south side of East Market St, between the Union Savings and Trust Building and the Duchess Building. Starting in 1857, hotel names like Camp, Bentley, Gilmore, Pancoast, Hoyt and Elliott were associated with the first building to occupy this lot. About 1900 the building was replaced by the one above and renamed the New Elliott, soon followed by the Colonial Hotel. The 1932 Warren City Directory reveals that the place was now known as the Warren Hotel. In April of 1936 a fire on the second floor caused much damage and cost three guests their lives. Two of the fatalities were the result of the guests jumping out of the windows in an attempt to escape the smoke and flames. A search of the City Directories for 1940/42 does not reveal a hotel at this site, but instead give the indication that the building was then being used as an office building. While comparing the photo above with one of the Warren Hotel, contained elsewhere on this site, I was concerned about the major differences between the facade of the 2 hotels. Nowhere was there indication that a third building had ever been constructed. But, in the middle of the 1936 Tribune article we find and I quote; “Sometime after the Union Savings and Trust Building was completed in 1926 and other buildings in that section of Market St were compelled to get into line, about eight years ago, (ed 1928) a new front was put on the motel”. This explains the differences and similarities in the two views (Warren vs. Colonial) of the building. The same “get into line” though would also explain the minor changes in the building to the right of the hotels, the Voit Building, which I believe was torn down to make way for a technology annex for the bank What was the final fate of the hotel building? Joni Mitchell says it best, “They put up a parking lot”. Clear as mud? Sirmione (Bs) - Le difese della Rocca Scaligera Like almost everything else in the area, Rocca Scalgera (also occasionally known as Sirmione Castle) was built by one of the great families of Verona. The Della Scallas got their wealth and power the really old fashioned way -- they inherited it. And the only way to hold onto power like that is to wield it, flaunt it, and use it. The castle is the result of that need to show just how important they were. So important that they needed to build an entire castle The castle is on a spit of land that pokes two and a half miles out into Lake Garda, making it not only exceptionally peaceful, but also easy to defend in case of attack. And when you're surrounded on three sides by water, what better way to defend against attack than with ships. Rocca Scaligera eventually became home to the Dells Scalla family's fleet of warships which they used to patrol their kingdom. Today, the city of Sirmione remains an isolated haven from the rest of the world. While the drawbridge has been replaced by a pedestrian walkway, cars are not permitted unless you're a guest of one of the local hotels. People still flock to the area for its hot mineral springs and the peace afforded by its distance from the mainland -- just as they did in Roman times. --- English --- Around the year 1000 Sirmione was probably a free commune, but fell in the hands of the Scaliger(rich family of Verona) in the early 13th century. Mastino I della Scala was probably the founder of the castle. In the same period Sirmione was refuge for Patarines hereticals. The military role of the city continued until the 16th century. Sirmione was a possession of the Republic of Venice from 1405. HOTELS IN STOCKHOLM CITY : STOCKHOLM CITY
HOTELS IN STOCKHOLM CITY : HOTEL COSTE K. Hotels In Stockholm City
Stockholm, Sweden The AIR Tour in Europe kicked off again this week, and I headed out early to get acclimated and to get a little time to play tourist. Once the tour actually starts, there really isn't much tourism time. The first venue on the tour was Stockholm, Sweden, which took around thirteen (13) hours via plane, with a layover in Munich, Germany. You're never really sure what to expect on your first time to a new city, not to mention a city in a new country. Luckily, the last AIR Tour Europe leg left me somewhat better equipped to handle the jet-lag, currency and difference in food likes. I did some research before departing as well and found a few different places I wanted to visit to take pictures. I didn't know it, but there was also an event that took place that weekend. I was staying at The Grand Hotel, which is in a perfect location for touring Stockholm. My first stop was Gamla Stan. Many areas of Stockholm are made up of small islands. Many of the islands are close enough to one another to be accessible via a short bridge. Gamla Stan is one of those islands, but it is also the original location of Stockholm. Gamla Stan is the location of the Royal Palace, which is a massive 600+ bedroom building, that is still used by the royal family. The rest of Gamla Stan is packed with various buildings and small alleys. The narrowest of these alleys measures 32 inches across and can barely fit two people passing through at any given time. Many of the team started arriving Saturday, which also happened to be the day of the Stockholm Marathon. If you think a marathon event normally brings a city to a halt, imagine a small European city such as Stockholm. It was during this event that I decided to avoid taxis and explore Djurgarden. Djurgarden is yet another small island, accessible by bridge, that was originally designated as a playground for the royal family. These days it's still very much a playground, filled with parks and activities, but open to the people of the city. Also located on Djurgarden is the Skansen living museum. Skansen was my Sunday activity. The area has a rich history, but for the most part, serves a primary purpose for conserving Sweden's history. The vast space includes several different and complete houses from the 1600's to the 1800's. Many of them are open for you to explore, beautifully maintained, and staffed by individuals wearing period clothing. You get to learn all about life in Sweden as it was 400 years ago up to just 100 years ago. Skansen includes not just farm houses, but a church (Protestant), post office, and even a complete manor (reserved for the wealthy, who had to staff two members of the country's army). There is also a main street that includes era shops from printing, to pub, to groceries, to glass making, and more. There's even a small "nordic area zoo" in Skansen complete with wild boar, bison, horses, and so on. While Skansen is already hands-on enough to keep most kids happy, there's also a children's area. I can't say enough about Skansen. I learned so much. I walked around the are for four hours, and still hadn't seen everything. Sadly my brain was already on overload, and I need to get back to prepare for the tour. If you get a chance to visit Skansen, even as an American, I think you'll find it a wonderfully educational experience. My one tip would be that rather than walk there that you take a taxi, or better yet, one of the water taxis which operate regularly and make quick work of the short trip. Stockholm Business District Stockholm City Hall backed by the new office buildings in the T-Centralen area. I liked the light this day. I took this photo from the island just south of here called Sodermalm. BTW, Stockholm City Hall is the building on the right. That's where you pick up your Nobel prize.... The boats are at the main dock for ferries on the lake Malaren side (as opposed to the Baltic sea side). Lake Malaren is beautiful. One if the boats has a dinner tour from here to Drottningholm. It's a fun thing to do in the summer. The Stockholm Sheraton Hotel is the brick building on the right side of the photo. Willmore Lodge - Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri This historic log building was completed in 1930 for Union Electric, by Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation and designed by Louis La Beaume, a noted St. Louis architect and partner in the architectural firm of La Beaume and Klein. The Adirondack styled 6,500 square foot floor plan contained twenty-nine rooms. The building was constructed from Western white pine logs, brought into the area by rail from Pacific Northwestern United States logging companies. Union Electric sold the Lodge, a Union Electric built hotel, pleasure boats, forty thousand acres of lakefront property, and eight hundred miles of shoreline in 1945 to Cyrus Crane Willmore for $320,000. Willmore was one of the more important St. Louis real estate developers, creating much of what is the modern St. Louis landscape. Willmore's dream was that the newly created lake would soon be a vast vacation land. He knew that the chance to escape the city and still retain many of the city conveniences would appeal to wealthy St. Louisans. The new lake would provide a class of wealthy urban sportsmen a way to recapture a type of pioneer lifestyle through hunting and fishing. The Egan Lodge served as his primary residence until his death from heart disease only four years later. Although the building remained in his estate and unoccupied from 1949 until 1969, the local residents have, since, always referred to the property and building as the Willmore Lodge. The property was sold in 1969 to Harold Koplar and again in 1988 to North Port Company. Union Electric re-acquired the building and adjoining property in 1996 in order to insure the Lodge would be retained as a National Historical site and to protect the integrity of the shoreline from the Lodge to Bagnell Dam. The repurchase took place upon the bankruptcy of North Port Company and only amounted to the building and about thirty acres of undeveloped shoreland property. This time, the winning bid price was $1.06 million. During that same year, Union Electric officials approached the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce with a planned use for the site. Union Electric proposed that the Chamber use the building for its offices, develop a visitors center, and historical repository for Lake History. The Chamber would pay for restoration costs and Union Electric would provide the facility and grounds to the Chamber on a long term lease for $10.00 a year. Snyder, impressed by the beauty of the lakes, springs and bluffs, purchased 2,500 acres in 1903. On the top of the highest bluff he decided to build a European style mansion. He envisioned 9 (or 10) greenhouses, a watertower and carriage house and a castle-like mansion. He hired Scottish masons to do the stonework. The mansion was designed by a Kansas City architect, Adrian Van Brunt. The construction began in 1905, but it stopped soon: Snyder died in a car accident in 1906. Heirs of Snyder finished the mansion in 1926 but they couldn't enjoy it: the family fortune was soon gone. A luxury hotel operated in the castle but in 1942 it burned to the ground by accident. The fire also destroyed the carriage house. The place was completely abandoned and vandals torched the watertower in 1976. Two years later the state of Missouri bought the estate and the ruins and transformed it into a state park. The water tower was reconstructed and the forest and lakeside were saved from the real estate agencies.
