Noisy Miner Noisy Miner, Manorina melanocephala These are quite an attractive bird, really. They are well named, as they cheep incessantly. I've often wondered how people seem to be able to take bird shots against perfectly plain backgrounds. I guess the sky is pretty plain. In this shot the background is grass, but the plain-ness occurred quite by accident, although I did have to edit out a patch of fuzzy brown from a nearby tree trunk. Generally I'm focused simply on getting the bird in the frame, so backgrounds are a complete accident. (Crestwood Reserve, Baulkham Hills) Noisy Miner? New Railyard Park, part 2 My hat is off to landscape architect and designer Ken Smith who created an outstanding, varied, rich in textures, shapes, colors and lines landscape. Filled in railroad tracks end at an antique, used, rather then discarded train part. Various shades of ocher colored gravel delight the eyes. Several thousand rambunctious, tough plants and more then 400 trees have been planted. A 4 million water system catches roof-run-off in to tanks of 110,000 gallon storage capacity to be pump it to the new Water Tower built to historic specifications, to provide 40% of the water needed. 2 community garden circles are in the planning and an ancient acequia is awaiting renewed flow. Green grass that requires extensive watering has been confined to a big lawn in front of a performance space and in a few small circles around roasting pits. Kids have an interactive water fountain for play besides a sandbox and climbing and music making walls and very large slides. Water Pump There was this antique pump thing at the base of the hike which you could work to get the fountain going. I was the first to take a drink and OH MY GOD was it...iron-y. I filled up my water bottle and drank 24 ounces of iron-tastic water on the way home, in the hopes that it'll get hematocrit up. Also, drinking while someone is pumping this thing is HARD, because the water level constantly changes. Sardis Lake Swamp Located on the Little Tallahatchie River, Sardis Lake is a 98,520-acre (398.7 km?) water resource development project occupying parts of three North Mississippi counties. The dam site is nine miles (14 km) southeast of the town of Sardis, and is only an hour drive from Memphis, Tennessee. Sardis Dam was the first of the Yazoo Headwaters Projects to be built. Authorization for the project came when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Flood Control Act of 1936. Shortly after congressional approval, work on Sardis Dam proceeded at a feverish pace. Twelve-hour days, seven days a week were the rule not the exception while Sardis Dam lay strewn on the drawing boards. Out in the dusty fields however, it was a different story. Thousands of men toiled, doing backbreaking work using mules, brush hooks, crosscut saws and axes to clear fourteen miles (21 km) along the Little Tallahatchie River, characterized by cutover hardwood, dense undergrowth and meandering sloughs. Becoming operational in October 1940, the dam embodied some of the most advanced design and construction methods of its day. At 15,300 feet (4,700 m) in length, and with an average height of 97 feet (30 m), Sardis Dam was for many years the largest earth-filled type in the world! The most distinctive aspect of the dam's construction was the use of "hydraulic fill" techniques. This required that soil be dredged from the river below the dam site and pumped up to provide the earth fill that forms the major portion of the dam. To facilitate this, the Corps built and operated the "Pontotoc", a special dredge powered by two 3,000 hp (2,200 kW) electric motors. The 425-acre (1.72 km?) “Lower Lake” on the downstream side of Sardis Dam created by the dredging operation, today boasts the project's most dense concentration of recreational facilities. Sardis Lake has a maximum storage capacity of 1,512,000 acre feet (1,865,000,000 m?) of water. During the fall and winter months the lake is gradually drawn down to a "conservation pool" of 9,800 acres (40 km?). This allows for storage of spring rains from the 1,545-square-mile (4,000 km?) drainage area above the dam. Sardis Lake has performed its flood control mission admirably well. Since it became operational, the dam's emergency spillway has only been overtopped three times by unprecedented high water in 1973, 1983 and 1991. The lake's normal "recreation pool" is 32,500 acres (132 km?). Many visitors to Sardis Lake do not know of the project's role in flood control. To them, Sardis Lake is a place to play. Annual visitation tops 5 million people. The lake is popular with anglers and has a reputation for its abundant bass and crappie. Other recreation activities include hunting, camping, boating, skiing, swimming and picnicking. Thank God for this water truck driver who towed us to the nearest town - which was twelve miles away. It started for us one last time there after some fiddling with the fuel pump and made it to within a mile or so of our house. Kendall Oil This old Kendall Oil sign is hung on a building that appears to have been a service station along one of the earliest alignments of Route 66 through Dwight, Illinois. The front of the building boasts an impressive collection of vintage gasoline and oil signs, two vintage pumps, and an airbrushed rendition of an old Indy roadster. I've no idea what purpose the building currently serves-I think it's a garage of some sort, and it's next door to a tire specialist. şş Okains Bay Garage … or is it? şş Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula. Sump Off Popped the sump off today for its cleanup The engine bottom has a bit more baked on oily stuff than I'd expected. I may take off the oil pump pick up and then that baffle plate to clean up and carefully wipe the scum off the pump. As that's about all I can do for the moment I may just use a flushing oil once I've run it again for the first time even though every one says not to on old engines Oil External1 This is the stainless steel supply line from the oil sump/pump up to the internal distribution block. Note new bearing carriers for the input shaft. I eliminated the original bearing carriers and bushings which were worn out and replaced them with sealed radial bearings, new shaft and new pulley. Len likes the style, sound and performance, a 12 hp final gain and a great torque/power curve. Details on the engine work - I have a Bob Woods Performance Camshaft, TW408-6 on my 2007 FXSTC 103 cubic inch. We installed Bob Woods Performance Camshaft, TW408-6, Screamin Eagle 10.5-1 pistons, Screaming Eagle 110+ heads, roller rockers, it is bored .010 over to 104.7 cubic inch, with 4.35 gm/sec injectors, 50mm Throttle body, and a Tamaguchi diaphragm clutch. On the first Dyno run we had a stage 1 SE aircleaner, stock pipes with screamin eagle street performance slip ons with thunder monster baffles installed. We pulled about 94 HP. The S and S dual aircleaner added 4HP. to 98 HP. The last part of the install was the exhaust. We used D&D fatcat 2 into 1 with the 100CI+ baffles and gained 10 HP to 108, with Dyno tuning picking up the last 2HP to 110 HP and about 115 ft/lbs of torque. The Torque curve is awesome, coming on at 2600RPM with 100ft/lbs, peaking with 115 ft/lbs at 3750 RPM and holding 100ft/lbs to about 6250RPM. The tuning was all done by Scott at Cascade Harley in Bend, Oregon at about 3500 ft elevation. The bike rides awesome. The acceleration through each gear comes on as hard as the last gear through all 6 speeds. We did change the front sprocket to a 30t down from a 32T.
