We found them rusted and draped in cobwebs, piled up against a storefront with several other pieces of dejected lawn furniture. They were a faded shade of black with occasional tints of green poking through the rusty spots – paint upon paint that had dulled with age. Their appearance, overall, didn’t hold much promise. We brought them home, shooing spiders. All day Saturday Brad worked on them in the garage, sawing through ancient bolts and sanding through layered colors, primering and painting, then painting again. At the end of the day our front lawn flaunted two gorgeous chairs, shining cherry red and white in the sun, begging to be used while sipping gin and tonic. I absolutely adore them. June 7, 2007 Restored bouncer My husband restored this antique bouncer chair. The pair was the first he had ever done. Toulouse-Lautrec is known along with Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period. He recorded in his works many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Among the well-known works that he painted for the Moulin Rouge and other Parisian nightclubs are depictions of the singer Yvette Guilbert, the dancer Louise Weber, and the much more subtle dancer Jane Avril. American Furniture: Understanding Styles, Construction, and Quality What style is it? How is it put together? Is it real or is it a fake? How can I make it look its best without destroying its value? A savvy authority answers these and many other questions about when, where, how, and even why a piece of furniture was made. And by juxtaposing genuine works with copies, he shows how to judge the quality and authenticity of antiques to distinguish a fake from the real thing. Covering three centuries of changing styles, this handsome and useful volume details each period's essential traits, offering practical guidance to novice and seasoned collectors alike. The book moves sequentially through major design periods, including the popular William and Mary and Queen Anne styles, Rococo and Chippendale, Federal, Shaker, Modern, and Revival. Illustrations of silverwork and paintings set the furniture in context, and comparisons with European pieces point out the unique aspects of American design. JOHN T. KIRK, Emeritus Professor of Art History, Boston University, and for many years a principal lecturer for the American Arts Course at Sotheby's, New York, has held museum curatorial positions at Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Rhode Island Historical Society. His various awards and grants include a Guggenheim Fellowship, which led to his book The Shaker World: Art, Life, Belief. He lives in Seattle. 251 illustrations, 57 in full color, 7 line drawings, 81/2 x 111/2" (12) Thorne Rooms at KMA, Early American Kitchen (detail) Early American Kitchen For protection against long New England winters, early American settlers built houses with low-beamed ceilings, small windows, and solid doors. Walls and floors were constructed of unpainted planking, and furniture was pine or maple. A large fireplace for heating and cooking was the main feature of a colonial kitchen. The high-backed chairs provided a shield against winter drafts. Most colonial homes had a flax-wheel for spinning linen thread from which cloth was woven. Many New England homes had glass “witch’s balls” hanging beside the door to keep out evil spirits. The Knoxville Museum of Art’s Thorne Rooms are among America’s most well-known miniature diorama groups. The Thorne Rooms were developed in the 1930s and 40s by Mrs. James Ward Thorne, Chicago, IL, who loved dollhouses as a child. After extensive travels in Europe where she collected miniature furniture and accessories, Mrs. Thorne had over two dozen miniature rooms created by cabinetmakers from her own drawings. They were made in a scale of one inch to one foot. She painted and stained woodwork, papered walls, and made textiles for the rooms. The rooms were displayed in several World’s Fairs. In 1933–1934 they were displayed at Chicago’s Century of Progress Exposition. In 1939 they traveled to San Francisco’s Golden Gate International Exposition, and in 1940 they were displayed at the New York World’s Fair. Later, Mrs. Thorne created 29 more rooms, copying Europe’s castles, museums, and historic homes. She commissioned architects to create historically accurate settings and had textiles and carpets made by the Needlework Guild of Chicago. The rooms, tracing English and French style 1500–1920, were exhibited in 1937 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1942 Mrs. Thorne gave a third and final group of Thorne Rooms to the Art Institute. Those 37 rooms offered a view of American History, 1675–1940. In 1962, IBM, which had purchased 29 rooms, gave nine of the original Thorne Rooms to Knoxville’s Dulin Gallery of Art, this museum’s predecessor. Our rooms contain many of the miniature objects Mrs. Thorne collected during her youth and on her travels. The Knoxville Museum of Art is one of five museums in the country to have a collection of Thorne Rooms. The restoration of the Thorne Rooms has been made possible by the generous support of Sherri Lee, in honor of Mrs. McAfee Lee. 250 I blurred the windows for this structure that was probably built in the late 60s to early 1970s because whatever "genius" owns it now decided to furnish the office with tasteless Early American Ethan Allen style furniture and crappy molding found at the Home Depot. They even put aluminum shingles on part of the building for God's sake! Native Long Islanders are ignorant and can't appreciate the beauty and "exotica" of the Mid Century designs scattered around their island. Instead they fear the modernism and alter it horrendously, or they tear down examples of the genre. Instead preferring a pastiche of gaudy styles, ridiculous oversize bombastic "post modernism", lacking any scale, no beauty, and no respect for materials, and instead they celebrate anything that pays homage to a "Colonial" past - an "Early American" that is not done successfully. Lots of ugly fake panel doors with corny looking garlands and sentimentality. And if you try to say anything or express an opinion regarding modern design or the lack of, they look at you like you have two heads and commit unspeakable taboos. Welcome to Philistine land! early american style furniture Combining comfort, simplicity, and craftsmanship, Windsor chairs have long been prized by collectors. Introduced from England in the early 1700s, the Windsor style took hold in America first as seating for the well-to-do and later as the favorite chair of the general population. Included in the Windsor family are stools, tables, settees, high chairs, cradles, and candle stands, but the greatest variety is found in the chairs, which range from comb-back to bow-back to step-down versions. Their makers took advantage of the natural properties of different woods for particular components of the chairs, employing hickory, red oak, or ash for bent parts, maple for turnings, and pine for seats. Kassay meticulously documents all of these features and styles with drawings so accurate and precise that amateur furniture makers can use them as blueprints for creating Windsor reproductions. The drawings are complemented by narrative descriptions, photographs, and a list of measured parts for each of the pieces under discussion. NORTH CAROLINA FURNITURE IN NEW YORK - COUNTRY STYLE BEDROOM FURNITURE. North Carolina Furniture In New York
Lord Tryon's Palace 2165 A little history.....OK maybe a lot. Prior to becoming Governor, William Tryon worked with architect John Hawks during 1764 and 1765 to draw up plans for an palatial home in the North Carolina colony. In December 1766, the North Carolina legislature authorized 5,000 pounds for the building of Tryon's mansion. As politicians are so like to do with taxpayer money Tryon told the legislature that the sum was not substantial enough for the plans he and Hawk had created; building it "in the plainest manner" would cost no less than 10,000 pounds without including the outbuildings he envisioned. Hawks agreed to supervise as Tryon said native North Carolina workers would not have the skills to construct such a building. Tryon convinced the legislature to increase taxes for the house In 1770, Tryon moved into the palace. As you can imagine the colonial Americans were quite unhappy with the extra burden of taxation to fund this kind of lifestyle revolted and ended up with the Battle of Almanance in 1771 prior to the American Revolution. Governor Tryon left North Carolina and went to New York only having lived in the mansion one year. After the American Revolution it became the North Carolina State Capitol Building and the first general assemblies took place here. When Raleigh became the state capitol these grounds fell into disrepair and in 1798 burned down. The home only stood 28 years. The only original building left standing is the stable. Mrs. James Edwin Latham, a New Bern native, asked the state to assist in Restoring the mansion in 1944 and opened a trust fund for restoring the palace. The General Assembly organized the Tryon Palace Commission in 1945 and the restoration was completed in 1959 using the original plans and period furniture and paintings many of which were owned by Lord Tryon himself. Photo Reprint A sharp pace from start to finish 1884 The Popular Graphic Arts Collection is a large collection of historical prints (ca. 1700-1900) created to document geographic locations or popular subjects and sometimes used for advertising and educational purposes. Most are by American printmakers (e.g., Baillie, Currier & Ives, Sachse & Co.), but publishers in many other countries are also represented (e.g., Antonio Vanegas Arroyo). Subjects vary widely, from city and harbor views, street scenes, and manufacturing plants to genre scenes, historical events, religious iconography and portraits. This collection includes some images that reflect popular racism and stereotypes of their era. Photo Reprint A sharp pace from start to finish 1884. Reprint is 24 in. x 18 in. on archival quality photo paper. (15) Wallace Collection | Empress Josephine's desk First, this charming French gentleman was disapproving my taking photographs of these wonderful furnitures but when I told him that it is okay to take photographs without flash, he perked up :-) He is another furniture enthusiast. He told me that the most important piece of furniture (according to him) in this room is this table. This he said (and the other enthusiasts agreed) belonged to Empress Josephine of France and it didn't even say on the labeltag. He further told me that this is a very impressive collection and that it is a pity it is away from home. At this point I told him at least it is available for us all to enjoy for free and not hidden away by some private collector. After saying that, he looked at me and agreed. He then said, he will have to go back to all the rooms again so he can take pictures :-) Considering his pace, I think spent the whole day in the house. The collection richly documents sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, political activities including the woman suffrage campaign, conventions and public celebrations. The photographs Bain produced and gathered for distribution through his news service were worldwide in their coverage, but there was a special emphasis on life in New York City. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1900s to the mid-1920s, but scattered images can be found as early as the 1860s and as late as the 1930s. Photo Catherine Pace 1900. High Quality Light In The Attic Tl Barrett & The Youth For Christ Choir Like A Ship Type Compact Disc Gospel Track Title. 1 Like A Ship. 2 Wonderful. 3 It??S Me O Lord. 4 Ever Since. 5 Nobody Knows. 6 Joyful Noise. 7 Medley ?C Dr. Watts Hymn & The Disciples Prayer. 8 Blessed Quietness. Pastor T.L. Barrett led a youth choir out of Chicago during the late '60s and early '70s, just a few years after he got on the straight and narrow path, which may help listeners understand the unique power of the material on Like a Ship. (Without a Sail). Self-released by Barrett in 1971, it communicates many things, foremost being adoration and praise and, on the title track, the lost, aimless feelings that were undoubtedly shared by many a youth in the late '60s. Barrett got help on arrangements from some of Chicago's best studio hands, Chess/Cadet maestro Gene Barge, bassists Phillip Upchurch and Richard Evans, and drummer Charles Pittman. The opening title track is a moving piece of progressive soul, closer to Rotary Connection than Edwin Hawkins -- Barrett's vocals evoking Stevie Wonder singing in the style of Donny Hathaway -- and the choir is powerful and recorded well. A gem of contemporary gospel, much more obscure (at least outside of Chicago) than it deserved to be. ~ John Bush, Rovi. Product Type: Compact Disc. (10) Bill Harlan The Falls family had farmed the north hill since the beginning of the 19th century. As the town’s population grew in the prosperous decades up to the 1930s, they sold off portions of their farm to developers and, by the time that a boy named Bill Harlan had his mug shot taken in 1933, the open pasture above New Castle had been transformed into a well-off residential area with spacious streets lined with the sturdy mansions of industrialists and the elegant homes of bankers, businessmen and white-collar professionals—and of Bill’s family, who lived in a newly built timber house on Meyer avenue. The Harlans were an even older local family than the Falls, having arrived in the area in the 1790s, when they founded the village of Harlansburg, just east of the small settlement at the junction of the Shenango and the Neshannock creek that was to become the city of New Castle. By the 1930s, the Harlans—Bill’s father, uncles and cousins—owned several businesses in town and were comfortably settled among the quality up on the north hill. Highland avenue was the main spine of the north hill district, crossing the most moneyed streets on the way out of town. Two widowed sisters, Beulah Phillips and Mellie Julian, lived in a large house at 1503 Highland avenue, and another sister, Goldie Ingels, lived around the corner on Euclid avenue. On 13th January 1933, when the widows were wintering in California, Goldie Ingels passed by their house and noticed that some of the blinds were down, which they hadn’t been a couple of days previously. Letting herself in through the kitchen door, she found that the house had been ransacked. Furniture was overturned, rugs were awry and the contents of the drawers were scattered around the rooms. The thieves had evidently taken their time as they went through the house, methodically checking for valuables and making off with a dozen pearl handled knives; two triangle clocks; several rugs, large and small; two hunting rifles; two fishing poles; two men’s overcoats and one man’s suit; a seal skin coat; some dresses; two hundred pieces of silverware; linen sheets; two small lamps; three suitcases; one bureau toilet set; several decks of cards; and some memorandum pads. Based on the thoroughness of the job the police declared that the house had been targeted by a gang of professional thieves, but they were wrong. When the burglars gave themselves up two weeks later, they turned out to be a group of boys who lived in nearby streets, the youngest of whom was the sixteen-year-old Bill Harlan. Bill and his friend, George Hawk, had broken into the house one night during the first week of the widows' absence and stolen some small objects. The next night, they returned with some other boys, and together they set about stealing as much as they could carry off. The boys were all good students from well-off north hill families, and they apologised for the theft and promised to give back everything they had taken. Naturally, their punishment was light—probation for three years, and costs. Within two months, Bill Harlan was in custody again. He had broken into a little cottage along the Neshannock creek, the home of Tullie Caiazza, an insurance salesman and local baseball coach, and stolen some fishing tackle, a rifle and a mounted deer head. While he was awaiting trial, it emerged that he had also recently held up a Mercer hardware store and made off with guns, ammunition and ether. Once again, the court was sympathetic, and Bill was paroled for one year. However, only a few months later, he took part in an armed robbery at the Hutchinson inn, on the New Wilmington road. He fled to California and was apprehended in Los Angeles, where he unsuccessfully resisted extradition to Pennsylvania. Back in New Castle, the judge told Bill that anyone who committed so serious a crime while on parole should expect to be sent to jail, no matter how young they were. However, in recognition of his previous good behaviour—and, no doubt, the position of the Harlans among the families on the north hill—the court was disposed to give him one more chance to reform, and he was sent instead to the industrial school at Huntingdon. Seven years later, only a few days after the attack on Pearl harbor, Bill enlisted in the national guard. There is no further trace of him until his death in July 1997, in Sandusky, Ohio. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sources: New Castle News (22 May, 1931, “Deaths of the Day”; 14 January, 1933 “North Hill Residence Looted”; 9 March, 1933, “Clear Up Robbery At Phillips Home”; 13 March, 1933 “Charge Cottage Was Broken Into”; 21 March, 1933 “Sentenced In Mercer County Court”; 23 March, 1933, “Boy Who Stabbed His Sweetheart Sentenced Today”; 25 Jan, 1934, “Arrest Local Youth On Coast”; 14 Feb, 1934, “Officers Return From Coast Trip”; 3 March, 1934, “Pleas Entered And Prisoners Are Sentenced”; 8 March, 1934, “On Court House Hill”) Galerie Vivienne stairway The idea of providing protected shopping 'centers' is as old as trading : no one wants the goods to be ruined or the potential custommer deterred by weather conditions. The form may differ depending on the era and the country but such places always and everywhere exist(ed), be they souks, covered markets or shopping malls. While the wooden galeries du Palais Royal, built in 1786 and destroyed since, are considered as the parisian galeries prototype, the real expansion of the concept occured in the first half of the19th century. More than 30 passages or galeries have been built since and most of them still exist, each of them having its own personality: from the luxuous shops in Galerie Vivienne and Colbert to the simple passage way like Passage Dauphine, from the fashion designers haunt in Passage du Grand Cerf to the little Indian/Pakistan restaurants' collection in the shaddy Passage Brady; including the more 'classical' Passage Verdeau, Passage Jouffroy and Passage des Panoramas. After a quasi-disapearance during the 2nd empire (overshadowed by the new 'Grands Magasins'), they found a second youth at the end of the 20th century and continue to change : the Passage du Havre has been renovated and turned into a modern mini-mall, new passages have even been created like the marche Saint Honore (hosting furniture designers)... But they all have some things in common, the light and the sounds: due to their glass roofs, the natural light, even filtered through pebble-glass differs from any sort of man-made light, and they retain this incredible quality of peace due to muted sounds. THE RED HOUSE FURNITURE : WHY DO DOGS LICK FURNITURE. The Red House Furniture
Crosley 302 Red Wall Phone (CR55-RE) The Crosley 302 Phone returns to the wall in this Henry Dreyfuss tribute. Dreyfuss, considered a brilliant industrial designer, worked with Bell Telephone Laboratories designing telephones that were sensitive to consumers' desire to suit a variety of home environments. Well known for the 302 style Desk Phone, he later shifted his design efforts to include this wall unit allowing consumers to walk with the phone while cradling it on their shoulder. This unified and balanced form replaced the awkward and ungainly shapes of earlier models. Would you believe Dreyfuss actually used measurements from over 2000 faces to determine the distance between the average mouth and ear? The Crosley 302 Wall Phone features the nostalgic rotary dial but actually functions with push button technology. No more waiting for that rotary dial to make its excruciating slow rotation. (14) Silas Deane House Has been designated a Registered National Historic Landmark Under the provisions of the Historic Sites Act of August 21, 1935. This site possesses exceptional value in the commemorating or illustrating the History of the United States. U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service 1973 In 1762, Silas Deane came to Wethersfield to teach and study law. He met Mehitable Webb, Joseph's widow, and became her legal and business advisor. They married in 1763, and had one son, Jesse, in 1764. Having iarrivedi socially, Silas' constructed his own mansion, conveniently next door to his Webb stepfamily. The new house was very different from the rest of Wethersfield architecture, more closely resembling dwellings from the Dutch West Indies or New York, with an asymmetrical facade probably featuring a piazza, or porch. The door opened onto a spacious hallway with a grand staircase, and the best parlor contained a carved Portland brownstone fireplace. Although the piazza is gone, the staircase and fireplace remain to this day. The Deane House was completed about 1766. Mehitable had little time to enjoy it, however, for she died in 1767. In 1769 Silas married another rich widow, Elizabeth Saltonstall Evards from New London. In 1774 Silas Deane served in the first Continental Congress, and while he was there John Adams visited Wethersfield and took tea with Mrs. Deane. In 1775 George Washington dined with Elizabeth en route to take command of the troops outside of Boston. Silas went to France in 1776 on a secret mission to secure troops, arms, and supplies for the revolutionary cause. While he was in Paris Elizabeth Deane died, and that misfortune was compounded by accusations of mismanagement of government funds. Silas was abruptly recalled by Congress but never given a hearing to exonerate himself. Having spent his fortune in an attempt to clear his name, he sent instructions to his brother Barnabas in Wethersfield to sell all his furniture. Disillusioned and impoverished, he stayed in Europe in self-imposed exile, but in 1789 decided to return to Canada to rebuild his fortune. On board ship on the night before his departure, he died mysteriously, and is buried in England. Stephen Chester bought the Deane House from Silas' creditors sometime after 1790. From 1800-1873 it passed through many hands until it was bought by Frances Talcott Fenn in 1874. Her son, U.S. Representative E. Hart Fenn inherited the house in 1899. Mr. Fenn and his second wife Margaret were active in the early preservation movement, and made few structural changes to the building, even going so far as to install the only bathtub in the basement! However, the house was severely damaged by fire in 1932, and the extent of the loss is unknown. Mrs. Fenn was a Connecticut Colonial Dame, and after she inherited the Deane House in 1939 she secretly made plans to turn it over to the Society after her own death. Her gift was a very welcome surprise in 1959, completing the Museum complex of the three adjacent houses. From 1960-1974 the Colonial Dames worked assiduously on the house's restoration, and in 1964 the house was declared a National Historic Landmark. When it opened to the public in 1974, it was recognized as one of the most careful and accurate restorations undertaken in the United States. red-blue-chair-1918-8 Gerrit Thomas Rietveld: furniture maker, designer and architect. He was born on 24 June 1888 and died on 26 June 1964. Despite his several dozens pieces of furniture, buildings and other designs, Rietveld is usually associated with one chair from 1918 and one house from 1924; his famous Red-Blue chair and the Rietveld-Schroder house. But Rietveld left behind an oeuvre which is even more comprehensive: no fewer than 215 furniture designs such as chairs, cabinets and tables, 232 designs for buildings and 240 other designs. Sometimes it concerns tangible furniture, single copies or prototypes, while only sketches or drafts are available for other models. The Red Blue Chair was a chair designed in 1918 by Gerrit Rietveld. It represents one of the first explorations by the De Stijl art movement in three dimensions. The original chair was in natural wood colour and was later painted in the De Stijl palette of primary colours - red, blue and yellow plus black. Replica made by Durr.
