Radio Repair Shop Journal, 1946
This is the journal kept by the owners of a radio repair shop that was in business in 1946. The shop was at 273 Charles St. in Providence, RI. Allied Service had two owners. The journal begins with expenditures for paint, wallboard, lumber and nails. They serviced a variety of radios including table, console, auto, portable, and midget styles. There were expenditures for tubes, capacitors, signs, electricity and telephone service among others.
I received this log from the son of one of the two owners.

365 Joy / Day 4
I had to travel for work today to a city I'm not particularly fond of and I was really dreading leaving my beautiful, quirky home for half a week of hotel rooms and recycled convention air.
While packing, I looked over and saw the dining table, and felt a little catch inside my chest.
I love the way the light comes in this window, always so soft yet dramatic, and this happy little maidenhair fern casting interesting patterns onto the wood and cloth.
This is where my gf and I sit for lunches and dinners, where we talk about our day to one another and catch up. I love this little corner of this crooked building in this hill-covered city. Looking at this will bring me enough joy to tide me over until I land in San Francisco again.

RADAR Room
RADAR room on the Scorpion. (Russian Foxtrot submarine)
This photo was taken of a RADAR room (located immediately below the conning tower) sans two bulkheads. With the bulkheads in place it could hold two men at the most. It may have been occupied by only one, and he would have been very cramped. Doing the plotting and operating the RADAR would keep one man pretty busy. I have no idea what the device between the plotting table and the RADAR consol is, but it would have to be operated by the same person. If the device on the right is in fact a Torpedo Data Computer, it probably was not operated at the same time as the RADAR which would likely only be used for navigation into or out of port.
In any case this room is exceptionally cramped even for a submarine.

This morning we woke up at 6 and headed off to the ropes course. Super fun, we started with a zip line-rope net-faith jump. Terrifying. It's so beautiful here I don't know how to begin to explain it. Had breakfast with the boys because there aren't enough seats at "Consols" table and us being the least cool kids we had to find a new seat. It is okay though we really like the guys at our table. Volleyball tournament, during free time I sat and stared at the mountains. Had a rodeo and then a barbque. Great day.

Dining Table
Through the viewfinder. This is in the front room and the other half of the sitting area. This used to be one big living room, but I like cozy spaces, so we moved the dining table in here and turned the dining room into a den.
The table is more useful this way because we rarely eat at it and the white built- in cabinets, (on the bottom) contain my most valuable photos and snapshots and I am able to pull them out and view them on the table. I also store them there because this is the safest place in the house in case of a flood.

The dining hall at Christ Church College, Oxford was the inspiration for the Hogwarts dining hall in the Harry Potter movies. Several scenes from the first two movies were filmed at Christ Church college. Many historic portraits line the walls of the dining hall, with eyes that follow you as you stroll through.

another view of the kitchen to the right of the stove. These strips of wood were painted a gorgeous shade of red and cleverly added by the previous owner. They have been a major space saver and make finding and accessing out pots and pans a painless experience. The silver metal tin matches the one over the stove while the two wooden fruit plaques add even more color and charm to the kitchen. That dark brown wooden table looks like a mini picnic table and was purchased at IKEA years ago and stained by me.
One of my favorite items is the blue pedestal bowl where there is always a ever changing supply of our week's fruits and vegetables. The two small jars are waiting to be filled with some human and pet treats!

I bought these three magnets at the flea market today. Automatic coffee maker, six pack of Pepsi, and Tupperware container for TEN CENTS EACH ! Barbie is very happy.
The table pedestal is a previous thrift shop find. It is a candle holder. It reminds me of Mary Engelbreit items.

Bar / Restaurant
The bar located on the second floor is composed by a small modern living room that receives the guests, here they can wait for a table or for a place on the bar sitting on leather cube puffs or on the hanging chair that falls from the third floor or terrace.
There is also a sitting area with the Bertoia chairs and the aluminum tables; and the bar area that has a transparent backing with bottles where you can see the yellow volume and the facade with the bomb.

Studio
My not-very-clean studio. This is the main workbench from the opposite corner of the room. It's in a garret window, as you may or may not be able to tell.
The workbench is made up of a sheet of plywood cut in two down the middle, with a set of folding table legs attached to each. Found the table legs on sale at Canadian Tire many years ago. They're great for moving!
The table on the left is covered on three sides in badly-sewn panels, pleated and held in place with thumbtacks. The front panels on both tables are on curtain rods suspended from cuphooks. You'll see what's under there later!
The tops are covered in a light black, low-pile corduroy which is fabulous for holding beads in place.

NYC - Brooklyn - Williamsburg - Peter Luger
Peter Luger Steak House, perennially rated the best steak house in New York by Zagat's, has been serving the finest USDA Prime steaks since 1887, when it was established as Carl Luger's Cafe, Billiards and Bowling Alley in the predominantly German neighborhood under the Williamsburg Bridge. In 1950, Sol Formon bought the restaurant in an auction. Today, his granddaughter, Jody Storch, has the job of buying the meat for the restaurant.
The selection process begins with fresh sides of beef that usually come from the Midwest. The section of beef used is called the short loin. Only those cattle graded PRIME by the United States Agriculture Department are even considered. It is then important to examine the color, fat conformation and bones. The color must be pink with an even conformation of fat dispersed, or marbling, throughout. If selected, the loin is brought back to the premises of the restaurant where the dry aging process begins, sitting in a temperature controlled cooler where air circulates around them. After the meat is properly aged, it is butchered and brought up to the kitchen for broiling.
Peter Luger only accepts cash and the Peter Luger credit card. Its decor can be described as a timeless beer hall, with wooden bar, weathered wooden tables, brass chandeliers, burnished oak wainscoting, and exposed wooden beams. The menu is sparse, with just about everyone ordering the porterhouse steak for 1 to 4, pairing it with shrimp cocktail, a beefsteak tomoato and onion salad (served with their famous steak sauce), German fries, and creamed spinach. Since the steaks are served rare, the plates are heated to 400 degrees Farenheit, allowing diners to further cook their meat.
Mint Julep!
The Mint Julep
I imagine to me a Mint Julep instantly evokes visions of Plantation Homes of old during the swelter of Summer, maybe a table underneath Spanish Moss-draped Live Oaks, and a glistening silver cup, beaded with sweat and garnished with an emerald sprig of mint. Ah, what could be more refreshing than that.
The Mint Julep Recipe
6 Fresh Mint Leaves
1 Tbsp Simple Syrup (See Note *)
2 oz. Bourbon (I like Maker's Mark)
Crushed Ice (See Note **)
Wooden Spoon
Rocks Glass (use a silver cup if you have one!)
Combine the mint and simple syrup in the bottom of the glass. Using the handle end of the spoon, smash the leaves into the simple syrup (muddle). Add the Bourbon, then the top with lots of crushed ice, stir, trying to keep the mint leaves on the bottom of the glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint and serve.
*Note - Simple Syrup is equal parts (by volume) water and sugar, cooked just until the sugar disolves. I make a 1 Cup batch and keep it in a squeeze bottle in the refrigerator.
**Note - It's important to use Crushed Ice, it keeps the mint on the bottom of the glass while you're sipping.

Horrendous spell in child care, four marriages, Steve the destroyer
No childhood
I started my life in child care, I'm not going to go into details because they're too horrendous what happened to my Mum at fifteen but I was a product of something that happened to her and I was placed in care and I went through the care system from birth.
I was a bit of a dysfunctional child and got into behavioral problems and at ten I spent three years in isolation, in a cell, some of you might know Stanford House closed unit?
It was a proper cell, concrete bed, concrete mattress - the whole thing - so kids can't hurt themselves and burn their cell down.
That very year I started to get an awful lot of hate and anger toward this world.
At ten years of age, I look at my son when he was ten and try to put him in the situation I was in.
And, I don't know, I kind of walked the cell and had panic attacks. I thought I was gonna die, I couldn't breath.
There was no love in there, absolutely no love.
The food was good and you had a colour TV and the ping-pong table but, you know, who wants that? I ten year old boy wants love and I started to get a lot of hate and anger.
When they let me out of that cell and it was a proper cell with two steel doors, not one but two.
Because most kids scream and kick and make and noise so they put a steel door on then they put a wooden door on so that you couldn't be heard.
When they opened that door I came out at thirteen and I wanted to get back at society and I went out and I went on a rampage and I think really now, looking back, I think the devil just grabbed hold of me in that cell and he used me and I went out there and I wanted to destroy everything that was in my path.
I started burgling and stabbing people and I carried a knife and I was doing armed robberies and I was doing all sorts of stuff.
Burglary gave me a fantastic adrenalin buzz. It just kind of fed an addiction that I had and it overtook my life. I've gone though four marriages.
I've lost count of how many children I've got. I've done twenty five years of prison life. Because of my behavioral difficulties, the prison system put me in solitary confinement.
I done twelve years on and off in solitary and I found that rather comfortable after the three years that I done I was more used to solitary than I was in the main wing.
My friend Paul, a heroin addict.
That's my early life and I'll bring you up to where I am today. I have a friend and his name is Paul a very good friend of mine, he was a heroin addict.
Some days he was doing a thousand pound a day on heroin.
If you wonder where he was getting the money, me and him kind of designed a way to open telephone boxes and we were going through this country like wild fire.
We were opening phone boxes and you know not ripping them off and doing the silly things that they do but we used our brain and we took a telephone box home and we opened it and we found how you opened a box and we could actually open a box under ten seconds and we kind of went through the whole country and we was literally on about three or four thousand pound a day.
He was a heroin addict and I lived a compulsive lifestyle - addiction - mine went on women, clothes, holidays, clothes, jewellery, gambling and the occasional drugs as well. That came to an end, by the way, because they reinforced the doors on the phone boxes and you can now no longer get through, so that come to an end.
Rob a Christian camp
Paul phoned me up one night and said that a friend of his had invited him to a Christian camp, which was Faith Camp, in Peterborough.
He was going to go down with a friend, the sun was shining, he had all of his heroin, he'd settled himself in for the week and he was looking forward to going camping.
He was going to send me the information back, you know, whether we could go down there and rob everybody.
I'd kind of said that, you know, that it's gonna be easy because everybody was gonna be over in the main conference place, 'cos he's told me over the phone what it's like and I said, “Well, just go there with a Stanley knife and kind of cut a hole in the tent, get in and get out and we can do hundreds of them.”
I was on bail at the time. I'd just been arrested on possession of heroin with intent to supply - it was a large amount of heroin.
I'm looking at between a five and eight year sentence, definitely going to prison.
I got me wife and I think I had three children then. It didn't bother me in the slightest. I was quite looking forward to going back to prison.
You know, my friends, my family were just as much in prison as they were out of prison. I lived in a criminal world, so I kind of looked forward to going back to prison.
Anyway, no phone call came from my friend Paul. Monday had come, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
I was starting to really get annoyed, thinking typical heroin addict, he's nicked everything there for himself and he's not got back to me - but that's what heroin addicts do, you know, they’re very selfish

This picture makes us look more civilized than we are. Japanese tray was a Christmas gift from my mom. Love it! That blue bowl? An item that usually sells for 50 bucks in craft galleries. I got it for $1.00 at a moving sale.
Fall!
I finally got my dining room cleaned up and organized. I have no Halloween salt and pepper shakers so I had to bring the pilgrims out early. I'm sure they don't mind.

52/52 FINALLY. holy hell.
Technically this would be uploaded on sunday which is the start of my birthday week (i'm 18 on tuesday(26th)) but hohhh well.
Another year gone by way to fast but i couldn't be happier because it's been the best year of my life so far.
I look forward to starting my 365 all over again on my birth day. So stay tuned. I also plan to upgrade to the Nikon d7k. My d40 has been with me through it all, the past two years but it's time for new technology.
Right now i'm listening to Red Herring by Harlem; i'm currently dating Sebastian Pannell, i'm sitting on my pub table in my room and it's 7:28pm on 10-21-10. I just got home from the Village of Terror with my mother, i filmed my T.V. Prod story and took pictures for the yearbook today. (i'm just saying everything that is ME at this moment) I love my best friend, bashn, but you knew that. He is the light that guides me home. i also applied at the local technical college today where i will be getting my business management degree. Hell. Yes. I'm starting to live my life. I will marry my future husband and continue to grow and learn and live.
Flyer: the godless of Gower Street
This is the smallest of the designs I put together for UCL ASH, designed to be picked up from piles at the freshers' fayre table and distributed to people, perhaps in pigeonholes.
As such, it's the most textual of all of the images here - unlike a poster on a wall, you can count on the viewer being someone who plans to stop and read it.
In the design process, the slogan at the top initially read 'The godless of Gower Street are recruiting' - in hindsight this suggested proselytism too strongly, and the society president agreed.
Mentioning that UCL had gone a while without an active atheist society, and that the 'godless' moniker had a long association with the university because it had always been secular, he suggested his society were reclaiming their title.
We thought it worked.

Skil Building Memories Website
Skil Tools, a subsidiary of the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation and an international leader in the portable and bench-top power tool market approached us to create an interactive solution for their Father's Day, Skil Building Memories Challenge promotion. Collaborating with Skil's Ad Agency, LACED created an interactive blog; where users could share their favorite Father's Day memories and the projects that they worked on together, by posting a note on a work bench. Additionally, users could comment on notes posted by others. Users were provided 5 questions to share their memories of their experiences or click on a note to add a comment.
Designing and developing a solution for an interactive blog was the first step, the next step was building an Admin Panel to allow Skil's internal marketing team to manage it. LACED developed a Adobe Flex admin panel to allow Skil's internal marketing team to moderate the interactive blog, in case there were any profanities. This simple to use tool notified Skil's marketing team via e-mail that there was a new post. They could then view the post by logging into the Admin Panel, and see the last updated post, along with any associated comments.
There were some great Father's Day memories shared, and commented on, help building the Skil brand with it's consumers, and community. The micro site was a success and Skil’s target audience had a place to share their memories of their fathers and the projects they worked on.

Cooking by fire for breakfast lunch and tea every day and in all weathers. Still, it was great fun. Training as a Scout began as a rawlie - axemanship, which included training with a bushman saw was essential as you weren't allow to use them unless you had been trained - this was a real disadvantage on camp. Pioneering - knots, lashings and building tables, seats, dressers, triangular flagpoles and other advanced projects was also started as a new scout. This ability gave us the comforts away from home - like a dining shelter over the table. Morning inspections of hygene and kit were also essential in maintaining standards. The uniform above was to halp save our real shirt unifoms for special occasions while away.
Mucho Color
I was in an art supply store the other day and picked up these pencils with this shot in mind. It took quite a few shots, however, to get it.
The pencils were arrayed on a piece of white plexiglass, but the first shots I took were dull and not that interesting. I played around with lighting, but with little satisfaction. Finally, I got out my cheap little studio flash with its diffuser shade, and placed it under the plexiglass (the dining room table it was sitting on is glass, thankfully). That did the trick, except I got really picky about making as perfect a circle as possible with the pencil tips. Finally, about 50 shots later, I got what I wanted. :) The pencils were as-is out of the box.
