kenda cross supreme?
so yesterday i heard this periodic buzz from the rear of the bike, which i attributed to that big, fat oversized cross tire wiggling a little and hitting that undersized planet bike fender. the fender is difficult to secure, and it's always wandering off to one side where the slightest imperfection in tire shape leads to rubbing. but when i got home i took a closer look and discovered that there was a portion of the tire that was shifted widely enough out of the plane of rotation to actually hit the chain stay instead. bad scene. upon even closer inspection it looked like the tire was partially unseated. i took it off the rim and found the damage to the bead area that i am attempting to depict in the above photograph.
fortunately, i had another tire lying around, not nearly as fat (a 30 cm kenda kwick), so i put that on the rear rim, and of course did a complete chain clean and relube (there's been a lot of rain and snow lately). so i had a pretty smooth ride in today.
i now have a larger tire on my front wheel than on the rear, which is probably unconventional; i'll keep this arrangement for a while, and see how i like it. i'm not racing, i'm commuting, and with that in mind i care more about having the most excellent steering, rather than the most excellent acceleration.
New [To Me] Raleigh Sports
My Latest Buy. How many bicycles can one man possibly need? At this rate, I will end up owning all of them worldwide by 2020!
I was really looking for a pre-ruined 1950's junker to update with a modern Sturmey Archer 8 spd drum rear hub, & an XLFD drum brake & dynamo front hub, on new Westwood rims, cut & reversed moustache bars & rod linkage brakes. None of which will be happening to this bike as it's too clean - I'll never destroy a well looked after vintage machine for the sake of my Frankenstein experiments.
I can't date this one, the rear hub only states 'AW7', & unusually has a removable cup on the non-drive side, like an old K series hub. This bike has it's original everything, down to the useable Dunlop Sports Tyres, & it came from an elderly Gentleman who had hardly ever used it, inherited from an uncle sadly killed in WW2, who had also hardly ever used it.
Edit: Greengage8, It appears that this contraption is indeed a '37!
