I ride this bike with flat or drop bars, I have two sets and stems. Today I changed over to a set of North Road bars. They give a wonderfully high and commanding riding position. I needed to make sevral trips round town today they were great fun. Tis bike is light and realy kicks when I want it to. I do need to be wary of the steering at junctions though as I am used to a Moulton or a Brompton and they can turn on a sixpence. I have to adust to slower steering and larger turning spaces on this bike. I wil trim down the rear outer cable casing this weekend.

'the black cat' - vintage poster

my latest vintage poster! "The Black Cat"

how cute is this cat riding on his bicycle? and check out his dapper suit too! what a dashing cat - talk about the cats meow! ;)

"The Black Cat" was a fictional short story magazine from the late 1800's/early 1900's. A design of a black cat with different borders, scenery, or situations was on every cover, usually with an art nouveau style to it.

the cat art works for this magazine are so charming, but unfortunately, i don't know who the artist(s) was.

I have this poster hanging up in my dining room where I have a lot of other cat art displayed.

BUILD A BIKE WHEEL - BIKE WHEEL

BUILD A BIKE WHEEL - EXERCISE BIKE COMPARE - EXERCISE BIKE MACHINE.

Build A Bike Wheel

build a bike wheel

    bike wheel
  • A bicycle wheel is a wheel, most commonly a wire wheel, designed for bicycle. A pair is often called a wheelset, especially in the context of ready built "off the shelf" performance-oriented wheels.

    build
  • Commission, finance, and oversee the building of (something)

  • construct: make by combining materials and parts; "this little pig made his house out of straw"; "Some eccentric constructed an electric brassiere warmer"

  • build up: form or accumulate steadily; "Resistance to the manager's plan built up quickly"; "Pressure is building up at the Indian-Pakistani border"

  • Construct (something, typically something large) by putting parts or material together over a period of time

  • Incorporate (something) and make it a permanent part of a structure, system, or situation

  • physique: constitution of the human body

Wheel building tutorial: Second pass

Wheel building tutorial: Second pass

SECOND PASS!

Ok, you're well on your way. Flip the wheel over. Try to keep the hub rotated the same direction as if the chain were pulling the hub in the drive direction. Looking down on the hub you should note that the holes on the right and left flanges of the hub do not line up. You can see this by trying to put a spoke through one hole on the right and left at the same time - it won't line up. What we're trying to do is isolate the next hole to begin the second pass with. You're now looking at the left side of the wheel. Find your key spoke (next to the valve hole). We're now trying to find the hole "behind" it. If you can't see it, drop a spoke through the nearby holes until you see which one is half a turn behind the master spoke. When you've got that, drop it through and put it through the rim hole to the left of the one the master spoke is laced to on the rim. Now do the same thing as your first pass, skipping one hole at a time on the hub and skipping three holes at at time on the rim. You won't have to count for the rim because they will match up to the next rim hole to the left of your first pass on the other side, my photo is taken from the left side of the wheel after this process is complete. Good work, you're kind of half way there - go down to Whiz Burger and get yourself a chocolate malt and some curly fries friend, you've earned it.

Wheel building tutorial: Spoke trick

Wheel building tutorial: Spoke trick

One thing I'm going to get out of the way is a little trick I developed after much frustration on my first build. Although I've never actually watched anyone build wheels professionally I can assume this is actually the way you're supposed to do it. If you're building deeper profile rims, it will be extremely difficult to get the spoke nipple through the back of the rim after the second pass (you'll see why after you get there). Initially I tried doing this with a screwdriver and nearly went insane. The trick to doing this is to take a spare spoke and thread the nipple on it a few turns from the top (that is, the side with the head and groove for a flathead screwdriver). Now you've got it at the end of a spoke and you can put it through the rim without dropping it inside (especially nice for deeper profile rims)! I felt like a genius when I thought of this and then realized it's probably well known among mechanics as the only way to do it with any sort of efficiency. Yet I digress - you can now take your spoke key (you have one right?) and twist it off the spare spoke and onto the laced spoke all in one brilliant step. See? See how I'm doing it?

Goulmima ksar, Morocco

Far from the horrible touristic towns of Boumalne and Tinherir, the small town of Goulmima is a miracle. One of the last traditional berber "ksar" (basically a village organized around a kasbah from the XIIth century) still inhabitated, in a middle of a fertile and generous date grove. No tourists and no arabs around here, only berbers.
As a result, people are forgotten, live in very precarious conditions and struggle to prevent their village from falling down.
Streets within the ksar are underground and totally dark, except for a few rays of light. Very convenient for the horrible summer heats, but you have to know where you're heading at !

futile attempt

On our mountain bike ride, having passed the outskirts of town and gotten ourselves lost, we stopped to have a beer and collect ourselves. The store wasn't much more than a dim room with some beer and bare essentials, run by a friendly abuelita who spoke no English. While we were waiting, an old blind man led by a young girl came to sit, and as the old man sipped his beer, he asked the girl who was talking nearby... "Dos gringos" she whispered to him...

kenda cross supreme?

kenda cross supreme?

so yesterday i heard this periodic buzz from the rear of the bike, which i attributed to that big, fat oversized cross tire wiggling a little and hitting that undersized planet bike fender. the fender is difficult to secure, and it's always wandering off to one side where the slightest imperfection in tire shape leads to rubbing. but when i got home i took a closer look and discovered that there was a portion of the tire that was shifted widely enough out of the plane of rotation to actually hit the chain stay instead. bad scene. upon even closer inspection it looked like the tire was partially unseated. i took it off the rim and found the damage to the bead area that i am attempting to depict in the above photograph.

fortunately, i had another tire lying around, not nearly as fat (a 30 cm kenda kwick), so i put that on the rear rim, and of course did a complete chain clean and relube (there's been a lot of rain and snow lately). so i had a pretty smooth ride in today.

i now have a larger tire on my front wheel than on the rear, which is probably unconventional; i'll keep this arrangement for a while, and see how i like it. i'm not racing, i'm commuting, and with that in mind i care more about having the most excellent steering, rather than the most excellent acceleration.

New [To Me] Raleigh Sports

New [To Me] Raleigh Sports

My Latest Buy. How many bicycles can one man possibly need? At this rate, I will end up owning all of them worldwide by 2020!
I was really looking for a pre-ruined 1950's junker to update with a modern Sturmey Archer 8 spd drum rear hub, & an XLFD drum brake & dynamo front hub, on new Westwood rims, cut & reversed moustache bars & rod linkage brakes. None of which will be happening to this bike as it's too clean - I'll never destroy a well looked after vintage machine for the sake of my Frankenstein experiments.

I can't date this one, the rear hub only states 'AW7', & unusually has a removable cup on the non-drive side, like an old K series hub. This bike has it's original everything, down to the useable Dunlop Sports Tyres, & it came from an elderly Gentleman who had hardly ever used it, inherited from an uncle sadly killed in WW2, who had also hardly ever used it.

Edit: Greengage8, It appears that this contraption is indeed a '37!

I got this little bell with a compass from Bike Nashbar for $2.97. Works very nicely as a bell. Probably I don't need a compass with the the Garmin Edge 705 but don't forget, Buzz Aldrin took a slide rule with him on Apollo 11 just to keep the computers honest :-). The bell and Garmin are kept in place by a Topeak BarXtender. The BarXtender has notches that wouldn't allow me to position things exactly as I would have liked so I used epoxy to make it work the way I wanted.

Love of old nylon anoraks

Love of old nylon anoraks

The left anorak was my mother-in-law's for some 14 years. She had worn it daily for about 4 winterseasons, washing it every year and when it was replaced it was folded up and awaiting its fate for a number of years. She then used it a couple of years as a rainjacket when walking the dog and I have actually seen her in it a couple of times. One evening I needed a jacket myself when going home after visiting my girl-friend as I had come to her without wearing a jacket. My girl-friend intended to loanher mum's anorak to me but it had disappeared. On asking her mum said she had put it in the bin that afternoon. It was taken out and given to me just to protect me when biking home after which I should bin it when coming home. I didn't and it is still in my collection.
The blue one was given to my girl-friend by an aunt of hers. At the time it was far to alrge for her so it was kept folded for possible future use and eventially forgotten. In the days before our marriage it was discovered when packing my future wife's possessions. She wanted to throw it away but I persuaded her to try it on. It was decided to keep it and the next winterseason she did actually wear it many times. It then landed on a pile of old clothing which I should put i a sack for disposal.
However I still have it, hence this picture of two old anoraks, both about 45 years old by now.

241 6 Mother in law's anorak

When I first met my wife her mother had a nylon anorak hanging in the cupboard under the stairs. It definitely had seen better days and I saw the woman wearing it only once or twice when walking the dog. During the following spring I went on my bike to my girl-friend without coat. When I wanted to go home it had started raining. My girl-friend offered the old anorak to me but could not find it anymore. On asking her mother the reply came that it had been put in the dustbin that afternoon...
I decided that we could have a look.
The anorak was still there albeit with some leftovers of that evening's dinner thrown over it.
It was taken out and we both cleaned the nylon. After that I tried it on and it fitted me quite well.
As I went into the living-room to say my my girl-friend's mum good-bye she was a bit surprised to see me wearing her old anorak telling me that when getting home I could put it in the bin straightaway. I asked her when she had got it new. After a bit of thinking she said that it was around 1968, had worn it for about four winters when she had bought a new one. It had been laying folded away for a number of years until it was rediscovered and seen use as a sort of rainjacket when walking the dogs.
