Compass We had a flood. Our washing machine pumped water out onto the floor for an hour before we noticed. That was about 6 weeks ago. Builders checked the floor and found that it needed replacing. The whole floor from the utility room through the kitchen to the hall including this motif has to come up. The insurance is paying of course so everything will be as good as new except for our compass. We had it put in 5 years ago when we moved in but the company no longer makes the colours we chose. We can still have a compass but not in these colours. I have to say the colours don't show up to well now I've uploaded the picture but there is a slight purple tint to the darker outer circle and the darkest points of the compass are a darker purple. The colours do look better in the larger size. As I type a builder is ripping the kitchen apart and this compass has already been removed. He managed to get it off in one piece though and we may be able to use it for something. I'm considering making a table top from it. © Neil Mallett 2008 Related topics: floor leveling tools ground floor slab insulation from wood floors hep2o underfloor heating bamboo wood floor white ash flooring vinyl floor coverings brisbane design own floor plan laying hardwood floors |

Giant Zanzibar Castor Bean 7 Seeds -Ricinus- Green Leaf THE CASTOR BEAN is a shrub-like plant with large, long-stemmed leaves that are lobed like fingers. Its spiny, clustered seed pods contain white, bean-like seeds (Botanically speaking, it isn't a true bean, but a Spurge), which typically bear attractive markings in various colours. The plant is native to tropical Africa, but it is grown commercially in California and has become naturalized throughout the southern United States. In northern areas, it is often cultivated, in the warmer months, as an ornamental annual in gardens, providing local gardeners with a castor of thousands.... Giant Zanzibar is a larger variety than common castor bean with more conspicuous veining on the leaves. This is a fast growing plant with huge, palmate, tropical-looking leaves up to three feet across. In tropical areas Castor Beans are perennial. This variety can grow 20 feet tall. POISON LOCATION: Seeds, bark & leaves are all somewhat toxic, but the greatest concentration of the toxin occurs in the seeds & their pods. If you grow Castor Beans in your garden and you have children it is safest to remove & destroy the seed pods before they mature. POISON TYPE: Ricin, a poisonous protein, one of a group known as plant lectins. In the right amount & concentration, Ricin is said to be one of the most toxic natural poisons in the world. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of more complex proteins in the intestinal wall, which in turn causes digestive distress. Castor Beans are traditionally cultivated as a basis of laxatives such as castor oil, which is also used as an ingredient of industrial lubricants, soaps, & varnishes My Grandmother use to plant one Castor Bean Plant near the garden to keep deer away! Being personally violated by a loved one is one of the deepest wounds to be cut with. You believe something like this will never happen to you until it does. Please learn that if you are the individual who has been violated, you did nothing wrong. When an affair develops those involved may use excuses and untruths to validate their actions. Also, if exposed or confronted some may not want to be held accountable for their behavior or pay any consequences. This is not in every case that is why I am saying only some. Violated relationships can either dissolve permanently or can mend over time. For those that mend it takes a lot of time, patience and understanding. Broken trust is the hardest aspect to earn again. A very important lesson I am hoping to teach my readers is if you are in a relationship with someone and are tempted to be with someone else, you end the relationship you are currently in and then move on. You have no right to cheat and hurt another human being. It was where I learned to play on the street. It was not a typical urban tenement area. It was the mid-point of Hunts Point – a real Tom Sawyer paradise. PS48, a six-story public school, stood on a hill and I could wander for 50 streets and never get lost because I could always see my school and the street on which I lived. At the time, landlords competed for your tenancy, giving free months rent up to six months, as well as free electric, water, etc. I remember us visiting the house for the first time and meeting the owners of this two-story house. It was three stories in the rear where the lower story was for the garages and the front was two stories. To the right side of the house was a hill and to the left the alley for the auto driveway to the rear. I have photos of my mother and brother sitting on chairs in front of the garage sunning themselves. The side alley had a door to the stairs up to our landlord with an interior door from the kitchen also leading to the stairs. Before we even moved in, the owners made us a dresser of drawers with red-orange round screw-on knobs, which I cherished for as long as I could remember. He had a son who went to war and never returned. There were two entrances at the front of the house a top a few steps to both the lower and upper floors. Ours was to the left and opened into the sun parlor. It was in this room that my brother and I would play. It was here I divided the room in half so that he would have his, and, I, my area to play. Mine was the half furthest from the door so that I could build out of boxes and cloth my own little house with rooms and shelves and places to hide. Of course, I’d invite my brother in to visit. My parent’s master bedroom was just adjacent to this parlor, separated by a wall with a big double window, which they kept closed and curtained. Across from the front door and leading into a long hall way to the living room and the rear of the house was a multi-paned glass door. It was through this door that my brother one day in one of our sliding in the hallway games slide and but his arm though and cut himself so badly we had to rush him to a hospital. As the living room, the kitchen spanned the width of the house, with windows on both sides and next to the window on the left was the community stair connecting from the garage below to the apartment of the owner above. Continuing to the rear of the house was the bathroom on the left and the pantry to the right, and then finally a spare room on the right and the bedroom shared by my brother and I on the left. Both the spare and our bedroom had windows facing the backyard where below was the entrance to the garage where my father parked his car. Hunts Point Boulevard actually began at the end of Hunts Point at the East River port of Hunts Point and ended at southern boulevard and 163 Street. It had a cobblestone surface embedded with steel trolley tracks. Because I was so little, I remember it being huge and the way it bowed up in the center and was low at the curbs for sewer drainage. We walked this boulevard often to shop at the Simpson market, visit my grandma, or shop at the Hunts Point market on the steel bridge where there were a variety of shops, especially a cheese shop where my mother was served by a very handsome and kind gentleman. Also on Hunts Point Boulevard lived a little handicapped girl named Theresa from my class in public school. Also, my father’s accountant, Jimmy, lived in big apartment building next to the Wonder Bread factory. We would often stop at this factory late at night to buy fresh baked bread. We’d always smell the bread being baked every time we drove, trollied, or walked by. There were shops under the building along the way. Some were closed with their glass painted black. Faille Street began at a 45-degree angle off of Hunts Point Boulevard, having some shops and especially our corner grocery owned by Mr. Teitlebaum and across the street from him a corner candy store/luncheonette. It was in this store that I’d buy those sugar dots on paper and for a penny you could watch flip card movies by placing your eyes at a steel view finder and cranking the handle fast or slow as you wish to see a train with smoke coming out, Charlie chaplain running around, etc. When I was four and half Billy, Ralph and his brother, Johnny, took me every Saturday on the trolley to the YMCA. We’d transfer several times. The trolleys were painted red and yellow with wooden seats and brass bars to prevent falling. On other occasions, we’d hitch a ride on the back of the trolley holding on to the electric cable and spool. We’d ride from the swing park down to the end of trolley line, which was only several blocks east. From that point on, hunts Point Boulevard ended because it was not paved. Also, the rest of Hunts Point was industrial, with factories, military storage and auto repair. At the lower corner, there was an empty l Al Capone Garage Raided by Eliot Ness & The Untouchables During Prohibition, Al Capone used a garage here to warehouse cases of illegal alcohol. The stash was located in a hidden room under a drainage outlet in the floor. Eliot Ness and his "Untouchables" raided the premises in 1929, discovering & destroying $15,000 worth of liquor. Located at 3419 N. Clark St. garage floor drainage Style Tile has created the ultimate combination of form and function. Style Tile interlocking floor tiles are available in a Tire Tread Pattern, a Coin Pattern and a Drain Tile. With Style Tile, the Drain floor tile is vented allowing dirt, water and debris to fall through. The water evaporates and from time to time, you use a shop-vac and clean the dirt right through your garage floor tile! The beauty is, the dirt is hidden and your new garage floor stays clean. With some garage floor systems, the functionality ends there, but not with Style Tile ! The Drain Tile is designed to interlock with the and compliment the Tire Tread and Coin Pattern tile. The concept is so brilliant, yet so simple. Use the Drain Tile in the areas where your vehicles pull in and in any high traffic areas, like where your kids leave their muddy boots. Any water will drain immediately and therefore not track into the rest of your garage. If you have garage that is more of a workshop, you may want to consider Drain Tile over the entire surface. How to Order Your Style Tile Floor. Begin the layout of your new Style Tile floor, at the open end of the garage (where the car enters). If you are installing the Style Tile floor in a room, start at the doorway to the room. Standing inside the garage (or room) one male side (with tabs) must face outward, towards the street (or door opening) and the other male side facing to your right. It may be helpful to draw out a sketch of the area that you plan to tile. Now that you have the proper alignment of the tiles, you will be able to order edge pieces that will lock into place. The Style Tile can be easily cut to fit, by using a utility knife, circular saw or table saw. When designing the layout and ordering your new Style Tile floor, please keep in mind that all 12" x 12" tiles are packaged and sold 40 tiles to a box (40 sq. ft.). Edge pieces are sold individually. king's college chapel, cambridge 1446-1515. king's college chapel, cambridge, 1446-1515. architects: reginald ely (1438-1471), john wastell (1460-1515), simon clerk (1434–1489), william vertue (d. 1527) this is more or less the conclusion to gothic architecture in england and as such, the final flowering of the french style as it was known before renaissance propagandists decided a more derogatory word was needed. I have heard the perpendicular style, the english term for late gothic architecture, called inferior to what came before it, but inferior was not the first word to cross my mind as we entered the chapel and spent some time there by ourselves before other tourists arrived. yes, if you judge it strictly by the defining categories of gothic architecture set up by ruskin, you'll find it lacking. here is little of the savageness, the changefulness or variety, the naturalism, or the sense of the grotesque he described. in fact, ruskin called the chapel a table turned upside down with its four legs in the air, an acute image of its less celebrated exterior, but he also admitted elsewhere that his attack "took no account...of its superiority to everything else in its style". one underlying aspect of mediaeval architecture was an ambition of the church to match the classical monuments it had grown up among, the very monuments it had torn down in its early, taliban days but not quite erased from history. several surviving texts ask the same nagging question: how could pagan romans outshine the righteous? abbot suger who had been instrumental in the very birth of gothic at st. denis - he also wrote a book with the unpromising title the deeds of louis the fat - claimed success in his memoirs in which a traveller brought the happy message that st. denis had superseded even the roman hagia sophia in constantinople. in itself, a learned echo of justinian's "O solomon, I have outdone thee" when he saw hagia sophia completed, but...suffice to say, either the traveller or the abbot was a liar. epochs of architecture show such different qualities and priorities that they can be difficult to compare (or indeed to supersede, mr. suger) yet with the gothic, invitations to compare abound. monastries and cathedrals were built as fragments of an ideal city, but looking at their atriums, octagons, and basilicas, they are clearly fragments of an idealized rome, not some abstract city of god. now imagine them as they were intended, full of men wearing dresses, speaking latin, collecting art and books, hoarding wealth, burning incense, and buggering choirboys. I know, I know. its classical. and so is king's college chapel, all order, repetition and symmetry. those vaults, those spectacular fan vaults, are a great physical presence in the space, not some distant gothic apparition. to my mind, it is as classical as anything the renaissance produced in britain. no wonder, ruskin had to dismiss it. romans would feel right at home here, though they would not hesitate to replace that silly organ with a pool and install underfloor heating. it is never too late, one might add as a note to the locals. on a more serious note, king's college chapel is the finest building in cambridge and the real reason we went there. built by four master masons or architects over almost a century (if you include the stained glass windows), its unity of design is striking. it was the end of gothic, but it doesn't look like the end of anything. if we had only managed to see that one house, our trip to england would still have been justified. just go. autostitch of several photos. Thermolay Mat System Ideal for both small and larger installations where unobstructed floor space enables the simple un-reeling of the mat onto the floor surface. As the heating cable is secured in the mat in a uniform pattern, hot and cold spots are easily avoided when installing and the pre-attached self adhesive strips make floor laying even simpler. Simply fasten the rigid mat to the prepared concrete or ply boarded floor, cover in screed and finally lay the finished floor covering. As the mats power source is connected by a single ended 2 core cable, this simplifies the installation process making this mat system an ideal choice when planning your underfloor heating installations. Our job entailed fabricating the pirate ship rails for the display, hand carving and gold leafing the display rails, fabricating custom acrylic lighting enclosures that would be energized underwater for 3 solid days and would allow for color gel lenses to be used to change the color of the smoke aura, an integrated smoke machine to make a smoke aura, full surround sound speakers mounted underneath the rails on the water side to create a ripple in the water while playing thePirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, ensure that the tank would hold the 350 gallons of water without leaking onto the convention center floor where all the electrical outlets are located(the main power junction box was under a corner of our display since we were pulling power to the audio amps, lights, smoke, smart controller, etc we had to be almost on top of the plugs so there weren't wires littering the floor), and we would have to build it around the bike because there was no feasible way to drive the bike over the rail due to its length and ground clearance. Not too hard you say, well lets assume you are booked out with your garage cabinet business for the next 6 months, and let's assume you won't be anywhere that you can work on prefabrication until 2 days before the show. Then lets kick it up for fun and factor in that you will be driving all the pre finished materials(wood) up to Fremont from Los Angeles and it will start raining about 2 hours into the trip. Then when you get there, you have 4 hours to assemble the display before event goers arrive, including filling up 5 gallon water bottles with water in the restroom and transporting them to the display(35 trips 2 bottles at a time).....how'd we do you ask? bike took best paint in show, best bike in class, 2nd place overall, display got best continuity, and they gave us a bigger plaque for "Grand Display" because; as the judges put it, "You guys told us you were taking it to the limit for the inaugural show, but we had no idea that your "limit" was so far beyond what we had imagined." You see, most displays use urethanes to simulate water for the displays, but with the Pirate bike we decided to set the bar a little higher. The still water acted like a mirror to see the underside of the bike, but every 15 minutes the "show" started with smoke and music and lights; proper lighting effectively changes the entire look of the bike and ultimately got people excited to see something simply sitting there(looking awesome). (15) 0021 Bobbie Lang Robert Lang – constantly threatening to ‘burst my bud of calm and blossom into hysteria’ How to describe my very special friendship with this wonderful, larger than life, man of the theatre? Our friendship started during the late 1940s. Having just been released from the navy, aged 20, I was beginning to discover that I was drawn to sensitivity, eccentricity, and warmth in human beings and I felt strongly that I was somehow destined to be involved with the performing arts and its people, in every shape, form and colour. Back then, just after World War II, Cape Town’s Bree Street and the Malay Quarter above it (the Bo-Kaap) were a haven for artists, writers, poets and musicians. I suppose it became our own ‘Left Bank’ and it was here that everyone who was heartily sick of the war with all its horror and misery retreated to make love, not war. John Farley, a well-known artist at the time, owned a lovely old double-storey house in Bree Street, and to help make ends meet he rented out rooms to ‘suitable’ people. Robert Lang (‘Bobby’ to his friends) was one such person. At that time, Bobby, along with the well-known Cecil Jubber, was an announcer at the SABC and, like most of us in those early days, he too was starved for theatre. At that time, Brian Brooke (later to become a doyen of South African theatre) pioneered the formation of a repertory company and hired and converted the Dutch Reformed Church’s Hofmeyer Kerksaal into a lovely theatre. Many actors and stage technicians were to cut their teeth there under Brian’s tutelage, and during my short stint as a dancer with the UCT Ballet Company I also worked for Brian at night learning the ‘syntax and grammar’ of the theatre, (backstage). For my labours I was paid one pound sterling a week. Along with Bobby and people such as Mike Albrectson, Noel Arensohn, Teddy Darrell, and my lovely friend, Marion Menzies, we decided to form a ‘club’ where actors, singers, dancers, and artists could meet and socialise at night, after their various performances, or gigs. We found an old, double-storey Malay house halfway up Wale Street and rented the top floor, which we converted into a spacious lounge-cum-dance floor. Someone found an old 78-speed record player – long-playing records (LPs) were as yet unheard of, let alone the digital downloads of today! And so our little club took off. We named it the Gilded Cage Club and for at least two years it opened every night. Actors being notoriously broke, we placed an old soup plate on the table at the entrance and people would put in what they could afford. We were young, adventurous, idealistic, with not a care in the world – other than permanent poverty. The highlight of the year was the annual New Year’s march down Wale Street of the troupes of Cape Minstrels, on their way to the Coon Carnival – now more politically correctly named the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival. In those days this was a huge event, with every troupe from the Malay quarter descending in colourful celebration at the stroke of midnight. In a fit of rather inebriated Happy New Year enthusiasm one year, Bobbie and I joined one troupe and danced and staggered all the way with them to the Rosebank showgrounds, arriving at sunrise. Years later, on my return from Kenya as a young married man, Bobby and I hooked up again in Johannesburg and he was instrumental in launching my career as a theatre photographer. He introduced me to wonderful theatre personalities such as Leonard Schach, who, in 1959, gave me my first break photographing his production of The Tenth Man at the Playhouse Theatre in Braamfontein. Sadly, Bobby died of emphysema in 1988. PACT’s prima ballerina, Dawn Weller, and I attended his memorial service. Cecil Jubber was also there, to read his beautiful tribute to our true and dear friend. Cecil will, I know, forgive me for quoting this edited extract from his gentle heart and pen. I couldn’t have put it better. ‘Robert Lang did not single out any one of his many chums and playfellows; we were all equal in his regard. I’m no-one special in the long roll-call, the vast cast list of his friends. ‘Dear Bobby, sweet and kind. Lusting for life and interested in everything from kittens to catastrophes. Sweet Bobbikins, squat and lotus-like upon the floor, eyes a-glitter with gossip, from just somewhere, anywhere, in his last cramped years — but specially news about the theatre; his world, his life, his everything. Bobbity, of the flashing wit, the barbed tongue, and yet also the most good-natured, golden heart of all. ‘Then there was “Robert Lang”, stern arbiter of what was done and what was just not done, never suffering fools gladly, saying “One day I’m going to burst my bud of calm and blossom into hysteria”. ‘A light, a brightness of a myriad of fireflies, has flutter-flickered out of our lives. I’m blind-eyed in the dark he’s left behind. We warmed our cold and sometimes careless hearts at his friendly fire, a warmth that I will remembe View of the Key West Lighthouse History comes alive at the Crowne Plaza Key West - La Concha. Carl E Aubuchon built this Key West landmark, first opened in January of 1926, to provide the city with a "first class hotel." The newest hotel on the island had marble floors, private baths, elevators and other luxuries that were new to Key West accommodations. It was no surprise that the hotel was an immediate success with wealthy industrialists, visiting dignitaries, and high society. In fact, when the president of Pan American World Airways, Juan A. Trippe, announced the beginning of service between Key West and Cuba in 1927, he located the first office in the hotel. During this time, rum-running thrived, the sponge-gathering and cigar-making industry was booming and warm weather tourists from the mainland were being delivered by the hundreds to Key West by Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad. The stock market crash of 1929 hit Key West hard and suddenly it was one of the poorest cities in the United States. In 1930, because of financial difficulties, the hotel changed ownership and changed it's name from "La Concha" to the "Key West Colonial," although the natives still called it by its original name. Although the start of construction on the Overseas Highway improved the flow of visitors to the area, the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 damaged major parts of the highway and the Overseas Railroad and Key West was cut off from the mainland once again. The hurricane ended the Key West extension of the railroad and its bridge pilings and railway track beds became a part of the Overseas Highway, more commonly known as U.S. 1. Through it all, the La Concha survived and played host to its share of famous personalities. Ernest Hemingway, a name synonymous with Key West, stayed at the hotel and his protagonist in the acclaimed To Have and Have Not makes reference to La Concha's landmark tower as he sails from the island. Another Pulitzer Prize winning author, Tennessee Williams, finished the play "A Streetcar Named Desire" (for which he won the prize) here. In his words, "We arrived in Key West and occupied a two-room suite on the top of the Hotel La Concha and it was there that I really began to get Streetcar into shape. It went like a house on fire…" The rest is Broadway and movie history. The next 30 years saw the hotel fall victim to age and newer and glitzier hotels and resorts. By the early 80s, the only part of the hotel still open was the rooftop bar (for the history of rooftop bar, click here). The remaining rooms had been boarded up and were now occupied only by pigeons and the occasional vagrant. That all changed when architect Richard Rauh was hired to save the faded gem. Working only from old photographs, interviews of longtime residents about what the hotel once looked like, and stripped layers of wallpaper and panels, his crew painstakingly restored the La Concha to its former glory. The multi-million dollar, award winning project re-opened in 1986, this time with a new coral-pink exterior replacing the drab mustard-yellow look it once sported. When the hotel first opened, an article in the January 20th, 1926 edition of the Key West Citizen proclaimed "The roof of the Hotel La Concha has already become popular on account of the fine view that one can get of the entire city and surrounding gulf and ocean...In the distance are the towers, boats in the harbor, boats passing, the old fort, the sun shining down on the surrounding waters, and many other beautiful pictures made picturesque from that height." Storm damage to the 7th floor in September and October of 1948 forced repair of the rooms on that floor. In order to show the public that the damage was minimal, the hotel introduced a "penny cocktail hour" each evening. The popularity of the event led the hotel to realize they had not capitalized on the view from the top of the hotel. The opening of "The Quarterdeck" was announced in September of 1949 with an ad for "Dancing under the Key West stars with the lights of Key West and The Naval installations far below...a tropical moon...a sip of Cuban rum...a low rumba...all in the atmosphere of a Naval shop from quarterdeck to poop deck to bridge." Streamline Moderne Mannequin Balcony - Myer Emporium Mural Hall, Bourke Street, Melbourne In 1931 Sidney Myer (1878 – 1934) Russian emigre turned Melbourne businessman and philanthropist decided to reinvigorate his store the Myer Emporium by redeveloping his flagship Bourke Street store at 314-336 Bourke Street. Part of this included a new facade in the prevailing interwar style of the time – Art Deco and the addition of several more floors to what was already a very large department store. On the sixth floor a chic European style ballroom with soaring ceilings, sweeping stairs and parquet flooring was planned for use by the emporium’s patrons as a dining room by day and in which Myer could host Parisian fashion shows and hold exclusive Melbourne society events by night. The Myer Mural Hall, so called because of an impressive collection of ten murals by Australian artist Napier Waller, was the realisation of Sidney Myer’s dream. The Mural Hall, a dining hall suitable for a sitting for one thousand people and a venue for fashion parades and performances, was completed in 1933 as part of the sixth floor which was set aside for dining. It is a large rectangular space with a decorative plaster ceiling and balconies and wall panels in a Streamline Moderne style. However, it is the decoration of ten murals by renowned artist Napier Waller (1893-1972) that are the Mural Hall’s claim to fame. The murals took a little over a year to complete and were painted at Napier Waller’s home at Fairy Hills in Ivanhoe before being transported to the department store where they were hung. Completed in 1934, just after Sidney Myer’s death, eight of the murals are almost floor to ceiling, whilst the remaining two are located over the two side entrances. All pay homage to the seasons and to women and their achievements through history in the areas of art, opera, literature, dance, sport and fashion. The western wall features (running south to north) the full length murals; “Spring – The Dance Through the Centuries”, “Summer – Sports Through the Centuries”, “Autumn – Women in Literature” and the smaller mural “Modes of Transport by Land” above the door. The eastern wall features (running north to south) the full length murals; “Winter – Of Actresses and the Drama from Medieval Times to the Present”, “Pageant of Beautiful Women in History”, “Pageant of Women Famous in History”, “Revelation of Fashion” and the smaller mural “Modes of Transport by Sea” above the door. At the north end of the hall, a pair of "mannequin stairs" lead down from two balconies and the change rooms to a common landing. A temporary catwalk or stage was installed at this landing level for fashion parades and performances. The balustrading of the stairs is formed from 'Staybrite' stainless steel in an abstract ribbon design and the handrail is polished timber. The original timber flooring was replaced by parquetry in 1960. The hall is lit by three large and elaborate chandeliers from the original decorative scheme which were designed to provide up to ten different lighting effects. The National Trust classified the Myer Mural Hall noting it as “one of the finest Art Deco interiors in Australia and… one of the most impressive with few parallels anywhere in the world”. Napier Waller (1893 – 1972) was a noted Australian muralist, mosaicist and painter. He served in France from 1916, being so seriously wounded at Bullecourt that he lost his right arm. He was right-handed but learned to use his left hand while recuperating. Back in Australia, he established his reputation by exhibiting more paintings. He is perhaps best known for the mosaics and stained glass for the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, completed in 1958. However, Melbourne has been described as "a gallery of Napier Waller’s work". Pieces of Napier Waller’s works may be found in the Melbourne Town Hall (1927), the State Library of Victoria (1928), the T & G Life Building (1929), Newspaper House (1933), Florentino’s Restaurant (1934), the Wesley Church (1935) and the University of Melbourne (1940) as well as the Myer Mural Hall.
