Welcome back to Mushy's Home Improvement Show, where the mantra is: We're not crackheads!™ [disclaimer: we may eat food we find in drawers that has been there since 2000 but we won't smoke anything we find from the 1990's.]

On today's episode, we're preparing the kitchen for an overhaul. On the list of things that will happen either shortly or by the end of the summer: stripping and repainting the cupboards and cabinets; replacing the 42" stove and overhead cabinet with a 30" stove, 30" hooded microwave, and two 12" cabinets (floor will have a tray slide-out for pans, wall will have shelves for spices and such); replacing the laminant counter tops with granite tile; replacing the two-section stainless steel sink with a one-section ceramic-look sink; a serious green glass tile wraparound backsplash; rigging up lights over the new breakfast bar; replacing the flooring (though with what has not been decided).

Since this is the preliminary stage, there was measuring and shopping around and, oh, around 9pm, actually doing anything that resembled progress such as taking everything out of the cupboards and cabinets and putting it all into boxes, following Carson Cressley's advice and divvying said mess of items into Keep / Trash / Charity piles (how many loaf pans and casseroles does anyone need?), taking the drawers out of their slots and several layers of rancid old shelf paper off of the drawers and shelves, sorting through the spices and candy drawer to Keep or Trash things by age, and removing the knobs from the drawers and the magnet things off the cabinet doorways. There was also hunting for 9" cabinets, which was fun until I measured the spaces again and found that the standard width of appliances is 30", not the 36" which one interior designer had made blueprints around and I'd based my search on. 12" cabinets are everywhere and in order to make these new units match the not-at-all-snazzy cabinets I have I'm having some custom made for Ľ of the price of premade. Two nice green glass pendant lights were ordered from a cute little shop and should be in on Thursday.

Which brings us now to the Crackhead™ discovery of the day. I was taking down the contact paper in the cabinet over the stove (which wasn't really necessary since that particular cabinet is going bye-bye) and noticed how the vent for the present range hood looks. I'm not sure what the original homeowner from 1959 to the early 1990's had in the way of venting, but the next assclowns put a new range hood in. Which would have been fine, except that they replaced the vent pipe that goes from the hood to the vent hole cut in the ceiling. Which would have been fine had they used the same size pipe. What you are looking at in this photo is the ceiling end of their attempt to jerryrig a really fat pipe between the two ends. On the hood end, they cut a seam in the pipe and bent the thing inward, and slid it in the hood's spout. That part came out fairly okay. On the ceiling end, though, they basically went whacky with tin-snips and shoved jagged edges around, then tried to seal the gaping gaps with, I dunno, asphalt or something. No wonder everything in that cabinet (vegetable oils, vinegars, waffle maker, milkshake machine, George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine, shelf paper...) was greasy, all the frying gunk was going straight into the cabinet -- not out the vent in the roof! The hooded microwave will be self-venting so I think the tubes can be removed, the hole in the ceiling covered, and the lower portion of the roof vent can be reworked to let the attic's summer heat out.

Nothing else stupid has been encountered, unless you count the several rancid layers of shelf paper, but I did pull an ancient Tupperware lid out of the back of a cabinet, from behind the wrap/bags drawer by the sink. I thought my mother was the only one who put Tupperware lids in a drawer...

1990 Fame shower "6th Series" plastic

This is the plastic version of the "6th Series" shower from Fame. Compared to the metallic version, it has just the set of casing made of plastic. The water outlet bolter, heating chamber and switch chamber is made of PP, the top cover is the same used in the metallic version, made of ABS plastic.

It was available in different colors to match with the sanitary wares of that time, as white, light gray, ivory and beige. About 1993 the sieve and the water inlet screw was made in the same color of the product.

If you are a tourist travelling around South America, don't be fooled, poor hotels and public bathrooms used to be the worst places to find an electric shower correct installed. I see on the internet too much people blaming on how unsafe and unefficient electric showers are, but realize how many people are in Brazil using electrical showers since 40's and how many manufacturers (and the variety of models of showers as well) exist. Any electric appliances with a big power use to run bad if poorly installed and it is not different with electric showers.

Any type of electric shower was designed to heat the water, even very cold water, if the one you're using doesn't heat the water, there is something wrong with its electric connection for sure... Electric showers which are in service, but with some parts missing, like its alive parts uncovered / disassembled must be avoided, if you are paying for a hotel service, you must demand a new shower for you or maybe search for a better inn.

kitchen - cabinets by stove

The stove was not originally in that location - I presume a refrigerator was since there is a 120 outlet there. The most difficult part of updating appliances is finding nice stuff and still keeping the original cabinets. In this case, a previous owner added a 24" range and added some new cabinets around it. I'm thinking I may be able to integrate things better with a cooktop instead.

So yesterday the power went out, the whole damn apartment was out of power. I went out outside and everyone was flipping out.

I wasn’t flipping out, I was happy. Other than being robbed of the Sunday night football game on TV, I thought it was kind of cool. Plus I was just delighted they didn’t shut it off due to my bill not being paid. That’s the kind of haphazard stupid shit I would forget and let happen to me.

To relieved that it wasn’t me being a careless moron, I went back inside and lit a couple candles, got a couple flashlights going, and started to calm the babe down.

Then I started to listen. People talking. People congregating. Real human interaction. Huh?

I noticed more people intermingling at once than my entire four years living at this place.

“How sad is this?!” I thought to myself. It takes the power to go out for people to talk to each other? Usually it’s just a bunch of people mesmerized by their televisions like a bunch of mindless day of the dead zombies. Sadly though the only thing that they were talking about was about how annoyed they were that the power was out.

Have we become so reliant on this shit that we are lost without it?

I took advantage of the opportunity. I grabbed the babe, put our jackets on, and started to walk towards downtown.

And fuck my silly and call me crazy cool, the whole TOWN was blacked out! I mean stop lights, street lights, every single thing that required electricity was out.

I thought it was cool. I kind of reminded me of Armageddon.

But to see these people all huddling up in their minivans with the inside light on was both hilarious and despairing.

IS THIS ALL YOU PEOPLE KNOW? CAN YOU GET OUT OF YOUR BUBBLE? GO LIGHT A CANDLE AND PLAY A BOARD GAME! DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT A BOARD GAME IS?! GO FOR A WALK! DO YOUR LEGS WORK!?!? DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DO ANYTHING THAT DOESN’T REQUIRE GASOLINE OR A CORD?!

Think about this people. This whole plug-it-in culture we have become accustomed to is SCARY. Our lives are so glued to the TV and all our fucking appliances that we are in land of the lost without them.

Try this: Unplug your life for a week, or even just a day or two to start. Turn the TV off. Drive your bike or walk to the park. Go outside. Shit light a few candles instead of using your light bulbs. You’ll be surprised just how much you learn about yourself and the others you are surrounded by as you do this.

One of its pediments calls it a “monument dedicated by the Republic to the glory of French art”, reflecting its original purpose, that of housing the great artistic events of the city of Paris. The competition to choose the architect was fierce and controversial, and ultimately resulted in the contract being awarded to a group of four architects, Henri Deglane, Albert Louvet, Albert Thomas and Charles Girault, each with a separate area of responsibility.

The main space, almost 240 metres long, was constructed with an iron, steel and glass barrel-vaulted roof, making it the last of the large transparent structures inspired by London’s Crystal Palace that were necessary for large gatherings of people before the age of electricity. The main space was originally connected to the other parts of the palace along an east-west axis by a grand staircase in a style combining Classical and Art Nouveau, but the interior layout has since been somewhat modified.

The exterior of this massive palace combines an imposing Classical stone façade with a riot of Art Nouveau ironwork, and a number of allegorical statue groups including work by sculptors Paul Gasq, Camille Lefčvre, Alfred Boucher, Alphonse-Amédée Cordonnier and Raoul Verlet. A monumental bronze quadriga by Georges Récipon tops each wing of the main façade. The one on the Champs-Élysées side depicts Immortality prevailing over Time, the one on the Seine side Harmony triumphing over Discord.

The grand inauguration took place May 1, 1900, and from the very beginning the palace was the site of different kinds of shows in addition to the intended art exhibitions. These included a riding competition that took place annually from 1901 to 1957, but were mainly dedicated to innovation and modernity: the automobile, aviation, household appliances, and so on. The golden age of the art exhibitions as such lasted for some thirty years, while the last took place in 1947. The first major Matisse retrospective after his death was held at the Grand Palais from April 22, 1970 to September 21, 1970 and was an incredible success.

The structure itself, however, had problems that started even before it was completed, mainly as a result of subsidence caused by a drop in the water table. The builders attempted to compensate for this subsidence, and for a tendency of the ground to shift, by sinking supporting posts down to firmer soil, since construction could not be delayed. These measures were, however, only partially successful.

Further damage occurred once the building was in use. Excessive force applied to structural members during the installation of certain exhibitions such as the Exposition Internationale de la Locomotion Aérienne caused damage, as did acid runoff from the horse shows.

Additional problems due to the construction of the building itself revealed themselves over the course of time. Differential rates of expansion and contraction between cast iron and steel members, for example, allowed for water to enter, leading to corrosion and further weakening. When finally one of the glass ceiling panels fell in 1993, the main space had to be closed for restoration work, and was not fully reopened to the public until 2007.

AL Bellingrath House

Bellingrath Gardens and Home - on the National Historic Register, listed 1982-10-19. The 15-room Home was built in 1935 and designed by prominent Mobile architect, George B. Rogers, and encompasses 10,500 square feet. The kitchen building was demolished for the site, with the lodge remaining as a guest house. The exterior of the Home features hand-made brick salvaged in Mobile from the 1852 birthplace of Alva Smith Vanderbilt Belmont. Ironwork was obtained from the recently demolished Southern Hotel, also in Mobile. The result was dubbed “English Renaissance” by Rogers.

Flagstone terraces, a slate roof and figural copper downspouts join with a central courtyard, balconies and covered galleries to give the Home a Gulf Coast flair. The architect wanted the visitor to think of the house as a home, not a mansion, and it is situated to give the impression of a much more modest residence. He also wanted the Home to reflect the architectural heritage of the region.

The Bellingrath Home appears as it did in the Bellingraths’ era. Enjoy seeing the “ultra modern” bathrooms of 1935, the kitchen with its original appliances, German silver countertops and sinks and the Butler’s Pantry, overflowing with Mrs. Bellingrath’s collection of silver, crystal and china.

As of January '07, seven sets now operate the Dublin-Cork route . The Mark 3s will be in turn be superseded by the new batch of 183 Class 22000 by 2008. The first batch of these have been delivered in early March '07.

Castle Howard, North Yorkshire, England was built by Sir John Vanbrugh. The build was started c. 1700 and took 100 years to complete.
It is still the home of the Howard Family.
In 1940 a fire broke out in the South-East wing and swept through the house into the Great Hall, destroying the dome and twenty rooms in all. Fortunately, the house has now been largely restored.

Until this year photography in the house was not allowed. You can now take photos, but without flash or a tripod. This makes things rather difficult and these pictures were taken with a monopod, or by placing the camera on convenient ledges and using the self timer. The photos are not perfect, but I was pleased to be able to take them as this is such a beautiful house.

The rooms are still used by the Howard family out of season.
