Fred Roper's Company of Wonder Midgets - promotional badge (1930's)
English born Fred Roper’s Midget Troupe were one of many well known entertainment shows that toured America, Britain and parts of the British Empire throughout the first half of the 20th century. They performed variety acts in the Vaudeville style to delighted audiences that included songs, dance, jokes and impressions. A British Pathe film of Fred Roper’s troupe performing in ‘Lilliputian Moments’ exists. Lilliputians was a term often given to performing midgets, who as part of the show travelled sometimes with miniature scaled furniture, fittings and scenery.
Besides the ‘Fred Roper Company of Wonder Midgets’ there were also the Rose's Royal Midgets, Henry & Dolly Kramer Midget Troupe, Nate Eagle's Hollywood Midgets, Morris Gest’s Midget Troupe amongst others.
Many performers from midget troupes were trained actors and actresses who found roles in the film industry. Examples being the Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz and Ewoks from Star Wars-Return of the Jedi. Two well known persons that performed with Fred Roper’s troupe were Ronnie Phillips (1911-2007) who was 4’ 6” (1.37m) and Mary Ellen St. Aubin (b.1920) at 3’ 8” (1.12m).
This badge was first issued in 1931/32 to promote their tours and shows. It's motif indicates their act included a nautical theme centred on the fictional ship, HMS Lilliput. Made from die-stamped brass with two enamels (blue & white), it measures about 30mm high x 27mm wide with a pin clasp. The maker’s name of ‘H.W. Miller, Branston St, Birmingham’ is on the reverse with the registration number Rd.7640919 (c.1931). These badges are hard to find in very good condition but do occasionally turn up and may sell for between ?10 and ?15 each. Badges in lower grades will sell for less.

Burberry boosts FTSE with PPR rumours
Speculation that PPR is preparing to make a large acquisition in the luxury goods industry lifted the London markets in morning trade today.
The boost came as French paper La Tribune reported an unnamed source at the Paris-based holding company as suggesting Burberry was among the likely targets. As the fashion house is one of few luxury goods companies not to be family controlled, Burberry boasts a 100 percent free float.
It’s not the first time the companies have been linked for an acquisition. Six months ago reports that chief executive Francois-Henri Pinault sold PPR’s furniture company Conforma to free up funds for a luxury buy were played down by the company. At the time British Vogue suggested an upscale jeweller or watchmaker would make more sense for the group, such as Tiffany, which also holds a 100 percent free float.
Despite evidence to the contrary, shares in Burberry rose 1.5 percent to ?13.26 amidst the speculation.
