H.B.Bustros and Sursock-Cochrane Mausoleum, Mar Mitr Cemetery

H.B.Bustros and Sursock-Cochrane Mausoleum, Mar Mitr Cemetery

Mausoleum of the Sursock-Cochrane and Bustros families.

Alfred Moussa Sursock moved in the titled circles of Europe and married Maria Serra di Cassano, from an old Italian princely family. Their daughter, Yvonne eventually became Lady Cochrane. Albert and other Moussa branches of the Sursock family was also married into the Colonna family.

***************

The Bustros family, originally Cypriot, had moved to Lebanon in the 17th century. Although forced to flee during the troubled times of al-Jazzar, the family returned upon the persistent initiative of Abdallah Pasha in the 1820s. During the Egyptian occupation of Lebanon, Georges Bustros possessed the authority to levy taxes while another Bustros was chosen by Ibrahim Pasha amongst the six Christians on the advisory committee set up by the Egyptians. The Bustros family is another example of rapid social rise: their relations with the Egyptian monarchy, the Ottoman Sublime Porte and European dignitaries and consul-generals allowed the Bustroses access to immense wealth and economic opportunity.

The family resided in a mansion near to that of the Sursocks in Achrafiyeh and invested primarily in real estate. They became even richer by investing in land, trade and finance: they acquired real estate in Beirut; landholdings in Syria and Egypt; traded in agricultural products; and bought stocks in the Beirut-Damascus road company and the Beirut port company as well as other stocks in the Egyptian stock exchange and the Bourse d'alexandrie.

"Moussa Bustros and Nephews" a company established by one of Antoun Bustros' four sons became the agent for the London-based "Spartali and Company" which traded in grain between Syria and Europe as well as agents of the British Liverpool Steamers.

The Bustros and Sursock-Cochrane families had intermarried in latter generations.

The Sursok family whose origins can be traced back to Mersine, near Adana in modern-day Turkey, was originally a tax farming family in the service of the Ottomans. The Sursoks acquired miri/state land as a reward for their services to the Ottoman Empire and hence relocated to the Lebanese village of Barbara, near Byblos/Jbeil in the seveteenth century. In the nineteenth century, the family became engaged in Beirut's emerging trade and service sectors. The family's wealth and mercantile activities were noted by the Egyptian forces in control of Beirut and Mount Lebanon between 1830 and 1840. The Sursoks soon became proteges and dragomen to several European and American consul-generals.

The seven brothers and their sons are reported to have travelled on Greek and Russian passports as well as gained protege status with other European consulates in Beirut.

In the 1850s and 1860s, the Sursok brothers engaged in banking in Egypt and invested large sums in the Suez Canal Company, the Beirut-Damascus road company and the port company in Beirut. The Sursoks were closely related with the Egyptian monarchy and gained preferential deals on the large infrastructural and extravagant public works undertaken by Khedive Sa`id (1854-1863) and Khedive Isma`il (1863-1879).

In short, the Sursoks were a prominent mercantile family which had become "the most spectacular social climb in the 19th century Levant". The Sursoks were readily admitted into Ottoman, Egyptian and European high societies and were part of an international bourgeoisie tat circulated amid Alexandria, Beirut, Cairo, Istanbul, Paris and Rome. They were to become one of the "Seven Families" which constituted "the cream of Beirut's merchant nobility."

Recent documents have revealed that the Sursoks were absentee landlords in the vast Marj Ibn `Amer (Jezreel Valley) in Northern Palestine. In 1929, under the British Mandate, the Sursoks sold the valley to the rich European Jewish investor, Baron Rothschild. The European dynasty of of German Jewish origin that established European banking and finance houses from the late eighteenth century had established a fund to buy land in Palestine and encourage the immigration of Jews to Palestine. Their condition: the forced evacuation of Marj Ibn Amer's Palestinian population. The Sursoks readily obliged forcing the peasantry in the valley to evacuate it.

Many of the Sursoks have since lived in Europe although some continue to live in Beirut.

Howard Gardner - singular integrity

Howard Gardner - singular integrity

When capital management and investments limited uk speaker Howard Gardner was just a child, the US-born son of Holocaust refugees, his parents took him for a pricy (in those days) $300 aptitude test at Stevens Institute. “Your son is very good at lots of things, but his greatest gifts are in the clerical area,” they were told. “He has a bright future.” Most likely the testers were thinking of the kind of tasks that are automated by e-commerce websites today. The test totally missed the burning intelligence and insatiable curiosity that have made Gardner so revered as a thinker, rather than a clever phrase-maker.

To the public, he is best-known for his theory of multiple intelligences: “The fact that somebody is good in one thing is no indication of whether they’ll be good at something else.” He adds, “I would never have pursued this intuition if I hadn’t been doing two separate kinds of research as a young scholar in the 1970s. I was working partly with brain-damaged adults, ‘Oliver Sacks style,’ and partly with gifted children. The leap was to call different capabilities – such as facility with words, musical talent, spatial manipulation - ‘separate intelligences’.”

“Most people instinctively understand it,” he says. “The people who like my work the least are the testmakers, because they have so much invested in the notion of IQ as covering virtually all intelligence and they are constrained to certain kinds of instruments. But If I want to find out if you have what I call ‘interpersonal intelligence,’ I’m not going to ask you 20 multiple-choice questions; I’m going to put you in a group and see who’s taking orders from whom two hours later.”

As he grows older and wiser (he is 61), Gardner has started thinking about the uses to which intelligence is put. “I’m very influenced by A.O. Hirschman’s book Exit, Voice and Loyalty: Responses to Decline in Firms, Organizations, and States, written in 1970. As he says, if you’re in an organization, you owe it a certain amount of loyalty. But if you don’t like the way things are headed in the organization, you have a duty so speak up, and eventually perhaps to exit. One of the worst states to befall people is to fall out of favor with the group they want to be in… yet some- times it’s their duty to undergo that rejection. It’s hard for young people to understand. It’s loyalty to an abstract notion of what something should be, rather than to the thing itself.”

Gardner considers intelligence and morality to be orthogonal: “Morality includes a delineation of to whom or what you feel responsible. You have to understand the principles by which you will abide even - or perhaps especially - when the results go against your interests. Older people tend to be wiser not because they are smarter, but because they are more likely to understand the consequences over time. They can they pull up the right inventory of experiences” – or as Jeff Hawkins would say, they have more experience at recognizing patterns and predicting outcomes. Cautions Gardner, “When conditions change in the external world but you are still using the old [mental] maps, it may not work out so well.”

He continues: “If intelligence is amoral, so is technology. The challenge is that information technology seems so new, but in many ways it’s no different from any other industry.” Many in the computing industry – and many of the young people Gardner interviews – say they are concentrating on their careers now so that they can become rich and spend their money on good works later on, pointing to examples from David Rockefeller and Henry Ford to our industry’s own Bill Gates.

“But philanthropy doesn’t buy you a pass if you’re a rat as a business person,” says Gardner. “I believe in slippery slopes. I don’t believe in instant redemption through a philanthropic donation. Sometimes we need to pass laws that prevent misdeeds. But it’s better if people just want to do good work because it feels good and feels right.”

Still, he says, sometimes they need help: “At Google, for example, they say, ‘Look, we’ve got a long-term plan. It’s not based on the next quarter, but over the long run we’ll be a better investment.’ The broader point is that you need to have a narrative that you can adhere to and explain why you’re not doing what everyone else is.” That is, you need courage.

DSCF4324 In this flood of lights - I work in the box so that we can keep you in the boxes (and that's the only way to make something so called money)

Sometimes in bright day light, I notice I can't draw or do graphic works. While white beautiful floods of lights are coming from all directions into the house, I can't look at screen or I can't look at the papers. In such moments, I feel like I can only draw and so on at night.

I rather want to go around and punch holes in all these houses across the USA. I wanna be an expert on making skylight ceiling available to all those dark shady rooms and houses. There'd be a Google software for this so that it guides me about where to put the window for the best effect. I'd become very good at it so rain and so on won't leak in and damage the roof, ceiling and the house and property.

How would I finance this? - maybe by insulating all the walls of all these plywood walls, drywalls without any insulation in them. There are millions and millions of those houses - and by insulating them each unit'd save several hundreds dollar worth of heating and cooling cost every year.

(No I may want to tear down all those houses with empty walls and standing at wrong direction towards sun. )

But how to start such business? I don't know I thought about making DIY kit for insulating empty walls - some machines and materials -

I thought, 'Green' means - each utility companies would finance such simple R&D - and try to find earnest engineers - maybe Dean Kamen - should do this first than anything else - so that 'money' can be saved - and used for more smarter - infra updating purposes.

Even a 0.5% of their revenue would be too much money for this kind of R&D. We just need some softwares - to decide which side of wall insulation would do the msot job etc - vacuum - or pipes - and insulation materials. Punch holes in the wall a bit and send in and suck out - then material could fill the space. There could be other methods.

But trying to create such piece of gadget and method - shouldn't be that costly. It can be done even via online - with some, several 'garage' DIY innovators talking to each other, working via Web.

Financing that really won't cost much. Say Enron scandal. They sure know how they are ripping off - people. In California's inland's summer heat - anyone needs airconditioning. They pocket that money. And if they really are persecuted - fined, penalized and so on -

then if, if there are some people who got remorse about the enitre this energy' thing - spontaneously coming up with this kind of ideas and implementing it with their pocket money. A million a year. That'd be way too plentiful for coming up with such small implementation tool set.

with softwares which tells where the sun is, how the light is hitting walls - directions of your house, apartment - etc - people'd do it and I won't have to do it all.

Then I want to tell Marvin Minsky that we'd better first make coal mining robots. Because we still much depend on coals for our electricity - to power our computers and gadgets and airconditioning - and network systems - and there are actually people working in the underground to get coals dug out. We'd better make AI which moves Coal Mining Robots. First. So that those people are out of such risky profession.

Artificial intelligence is not artificial enough, if it needs some humans are required to do coal mining on the cheap to fuel its need for electricity. If we can't see those people beyond the wall socket our intelligence is way too limited. We sure see them we sure know them. Much of the 'automation' America came up with still requires some other humans stuck with unfavorable stuff. That's not good automation or reliable automation. (Computers - are automation - automatic calculators - used as coding decoding automation machines.)

And then maybe I want solar panels - even smaller ones to at least fuel these laptops and gadgets.

Hours still flow quietly in America, without really cramming together to do what should have been done - long time ago.

Day 62 - Bank Loan Lifecycle Flowchart

Day 62 - Bank Loan Lifecycle Flowchart

I was sitting here at work thinking about my student loan and before I knew it, I was flowcharting the logic of the life of a bank loan. Sure, there may be a few variables and functions left out. I consider this an abbreviated version. You know, kind of like that loan calculator we all had to write back in college with a few things added.

And yeah, I know. Most programmers don't use flowcharts anymore; if anything they use pseudocode. But I don't care. I find them useful. I like to flowchart normal, every day thought processes. I'll share them if I have any more good ones.

I was too lazy to redo it, but I wanted to add a nested if statement in the case he didn't pay yet: if 'nonpayment' is greater than three months, then beat the mark over the head on the phone, amass all his worldly positions as possible, and leave him an empty, quivering, hardly living pile of goo only slightly resembling the man he once was.

Wow, that if statement is a bitch. Imagine being the programer who would have to write that code.

Oh, and one last thing..... Did you happen to notice there' s no function to check a person's credit score? Apparently banks don't check credit any more. Otherwise, we wouldn't be in the supposed "economic troubles" we're in now. We're fine here, but I hear it sucks in New York.

Luckily, this logic isn't used by my bank.

Eagle Creek Quilt Shop

Eagle Creek Quilt Shop

These photos all show the same display area but in 3 different color schemes and fabric styles. This part of our shop falls into the category of a "showcase" display that Kelly Davey describes in his article in the FabShop News. Other than some bolts of fabric that are incorporated in the display, we do not sell product from this section of the store.

We completely change the display 4 or 5 times a year. The inspiration is usually a large fabric collection that reflects a major investment (pic 2.) Sometimes we are inspired by the season, in which case we pull fabric from the color wall. Occasionally, we are just inspired by a new quilt that we love and we build on that theme (pic 3.)

The props include the following:

Some kind of green plant. We are lucky to have lots of natural light.
A table lamp to light up the area in the evening.
A small antique vanity table is a permanent fixture. Sometimes we pin on a skirt (pics 1 & 2) or just drape fabric on the bolt (pic 3.)

The customer response has been uniformly positive and whatever fabric is used in this display always sells quickly!

Hon. Mr. Anura Bandaranaike, The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka - 2006

Hon. Mr. Anura Bandaranaike, The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka - 2006

Anura Priyadarshi Solomon Dias Bandaranaike (February 15, 1949 – March 16, 2008) was a Sri Lankan politician, last served as a member of parliament from the opposition. He previously served as Speaker of the 11th Parliament, which lasted from 2000 to 2001, and as minister of several cabinet departments, including as minister of tourism from April 2004 to January 2007 and as Foreign Minister briefly in 2005.

He was the son of former Prime Ministers Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike and the brother of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Sunethra Bandaranaike, philanthropist. His father, Solomon, while serving as prime minister, was assassinated when Bandaranaike was 10 years old.

His family has a long history in the socio-political arena of the country. His grandfather, Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranike was the Maha Mudaliyar (the chief native interpreter and advisor to the Governor) during British colonial rule. Despite these family connections, Bandaranaike missed the chance of becoming the President of Sri Lanka on several occasions.

He attended the Royal College, Colombo and proceeded to London,to read for a degree in History at UCL
Bandaranaike was elected to Parliament in 1977 and has been a member since then. He led the opposition from 1983 to 1988, served as minister of higher education from 1993 to 1994, and as the Speaker of Parliament from 2000 to 2001. He left his family's party in 1993 to join the opposing United National Party rejoined the SLFP in 2001.

He was in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party founded by his father for much of his political life, although he was an MP for the rival United National Party headed by his childhood friend when it was in the opposition. When the SLFP led alliance won the elections in 2004, Bandaranaike became minister of tourism, industry and investment.

Following the assassination of foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar in August 2005, Bandaranaike was appointed as foreign minister, amidst increased tension throughout the country. He dropped his position as minister of industry and investment, but remained tourism minister. He was later chosen as the running mate of Mahinda Rajapakse for the presidential campaign after the party rejected Bandaranaike's own ambitions of becoming the candidate.[1] [2]

Following Rajapakse's election victory it had been widely predicted that Bandaranaike would be appointed premier or foreign minister. Green Means Go

Green Means Go

It is interesting to go through a foreign country as a designer, noticing all the little differences. This one makes a lot of sense, using the green-red/go-stop training we get as drivers to tell when pedestrians should go-stop as well. In America, it's a white light.

Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie (25 November 1835 – 11 August 1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist, businessman, entrepreneur and a major philanthropist.
Carnegie was born in Fife, Scotland, and immigrated to the United States as a child with his parents. His first job in the United States was as a factory worker in a bobbin factory. Later, he became a bill logger for the owner of the company. Soon after he became a messenger boy. Eventually he progressed up the ranks of a telegraph company. He built Pittsburgh's Carnegie Steel Company, which was later merged with Elbert H. Gary's Federal Steel Company and several smaller companies to create U.S. Steel. With the fortune he made from business, he later turned to philanthropy and interests in education, founding the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
Carnegie donated most of his money to establish many libraries, schools, and universities in America, the United Kingdom and other countries, as well as a pension fund for former employees. He is often regarded as the second-richest man in history after John D. Rockefeller. Carnegie started as a telegrapher and by the 1860s had investments in railroads, railroad sleeping cars, bridges and oil derricks. He built further wealth as a bond salesman raising money for American enterprise in Europe.
He earned most of his fortune in the steel industry. In the 1870s, he founded the Carnegie Steel Company, a step which cemented his name as one of the "Captains of Industry". By the 1890s, the company was the largest and most profitable industrial enterprise in the world. Carnegie sold it to J.P. Morgan in 1901, who created U.S. Steel. Carnegie devoted the remainder of his life to large-scale philanthropy, with special emphasis on local libraries, world peace, education and scientific research. His life has often been referred to as a true "rags to riches" story.
