What's in my bag 05.2010 I have finally done again one of those. I've been putting publishing pics off. Even my project 365 photos are still on my iPhone waiting to be uploaded, but since I want to add a proper description and edit many of them, they got delayed. The result was that this one was delayed as well. Those who follow my bag shots will notice two main things - an almost symbolic amount of stuff carried and the new bag. I wanted a Crumpler bag so very baaaaadly and this was one of the few that I could find in a store here in Switzerland (at Jelmoli, if you're here and want one), I could have ordered any of the whole lineup online, but I wanted to have it RIGHT AWAY and not wait for ages and then pay some crazy customs tax on it. The good looks and the durability of this bag are nothing compared to the best thing it did for me - since it's that small (it's the Cheesy Disco), I had to learn to carry less things. The other change you'll notice is the lack of a laptop. Yep, it's the iPad effect. Some time ago I passed my trusty MacBook to my daughter (as mentioned in the description on some of my photos). Back then the iPad wasn't still announced and the iMac 27"; was the only reason for that drastic change. But in time I noticed that I missed some advantages of a mobile media consupmtion platform with enough space to be able to better watch movies than on the iPod 5G and the iPhone 3GS' displays. Surfing on the couch, reding in bed, COMICS, magazines, RSS were as well a bit disadvantaged on the small screen. So when the official release date came, I was at 03:40 a.m. in front the store the Apple Store expecting to see already at least 50 guys, patiently waiting for the opening in 4h20min. I was the 5th. I never regretted getting in bed at 8 the previous evening and getting up that early. :) I usually spend a bunch of time doing those pics, not in the actual taking of the picture as photography, but for the description and mainly the notes. Let's be honest - this type of pictures without the notes are a bit dull. air flow Cooling Pad Best cooling performance Related topics: coleman backpack cooler cooler master laptop cooler thermoelectric peltier cooler travel ice chest swamp coolers for cars cooler master notepal widescreen notebook cooler water cooler for xbox 360 ice cooler chest swamp cooler vest |

Miles Davis (1926-1991) by Photographer Unknown to Me Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Many well-known musicians rose to prominence as members of Davis' ensembles, including saxophonists Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, George Coleman, Wayne Shorter, Dave Liebman, Branford Marsalis and Kenny Garrett; trombonist J. J. Johnson; pianists Horace Silver, Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Kei Akagi; guitarists John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, John Scofield and Mike Stern; bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Dave Holland, Marcus Miller and Darryl Jones; and drummers Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, and Al Foster. On October 7, 2008, his album Kind of Blue, released in 1959, received its fourth platinum certification from the RIAA, signifying sales of 4 million copies. Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Davis was noted as "one of the key figures in the history of jazz". On November 5, 2009, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan sponsored a measure in the US House of Representatives to recognize and commemorate the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary. The measure also affirms jazz as a national treasure and "encourages the United States government to preserve and advance the art form of jazz music." It passed, unanimously, with a vote of 409–0 on December 15, 2009 110423 Dying Easter Eggs 02 - Coleman pencer, Coleman and I had a good time dying Easter Eggs (something in which Matt never participates). Spencer and I have always done this and it was kind of cool that Coleman was old enough to participate (in a pretty messy way, but oh well!). I bought him some paints to easily roll on but he was much more interested in suspending the eggs in the dye (with his hands...made for some colorful skin). Spencer and I got a bit more artistic with ours...and lasted a little longer. The DC Eagle Gay Leather Bar In the late 1960s. A group of guys put together dinners for local motorcyclists and leathermen These dinners took place at a bar on 9th Street in NW called Louis'. Oddly enough, it was located right across the street from FBI headquarters, and these were the days of J. Edgar Hoover. The bar was renamed Louis' Spartan Lounge, after the Spartans MC was formed on April 3, 1968. On September 4, 1968, Don Bruce became, what we now refer to as, our first "Baby Spartan." These dates and events are important to this story, because they would give birth to the legendary DC Eagle. Eventually, Don Bruce, became one of the early Spartans Presidents. He then decided that our crowd should have a home of our own. Don and his brother Eddie pooled their money to open the first of three buildings on 9th Street. The night before the Eagle was to open, Don invited the Spartans to take part in a ceremony. They placed nails into a sculpture of an eagle. This sculpture hung on the wall of that bar until the building was claimed by eminent domain to make way for what was then the "new" DC Convention Center at 900 9th St. NW. The bar closed at the regular hour on moving night and reopened the next day at noon in a brand new location. Many of the club members were drafted into the moving party to make sure everything would be ready. The Eagle gave flight to a number of other businesses, including the Leather Rack and the Eagle in Exile. There are many traditions that evolved from the brotherhood of the Spartans and the Eagle in the early years. The Hanging of the Club Colors. The Spartan Colors were the first club colors to ever hang on the walls of the Eagle and subsequently other bars adopted this tradition. Club Mugs. The Spartans were the first club to have mugs in the Eagle. Don wanted the club members to feel at home and special. Don insisted that any club member who came to the bar received special treatment. Helmet Drinks. As a thank you to the bikers that patronized the Eagle, the first drink is always on the house. Blackout Nights. One night while the bar was open, there was a power outage and rather than close, candles were placed around the bar. Thus began the tradition of a "Blackout Night." Thanksgiving Dinner. Don was very aware of the numbers of men that had nowhere to go on Thanksgiving Day. He began a tradition of preparing a complete holiday feast with all the trimmings that was available to all. Christmas Carols. Every Christmas Day, those that were in town would gather at the Eagle and sing carols with friends, instead of being alone. Mr. DC Eagle Contest. The idea of selecting a man who best represented the traditions and mystique of the bar was a novel one. The Mr. DC Eagle Contest is the longest running leather title contest in the entire country. The Eagle was open 365 days a year without fail. God help the manager who did not have that door open at noon sharp. The Eagle was not just the child of Don and Eddie. Dick McHugh, Don's partner in life, was there every step of the way. Dick was the Mr. Fix-It of the DC Eagle. He was the one that kept antiquated coolers, ice machines, air conditioning and heaters operating. Dick was the quiet force behind the scenes during the early days. But if you knew Dick, you could see his influence throughout the place. The time came again when the DC Eagle would be forced from it's nest, to make way for a new technology center on 7th Street. (The TechWorld Complex) Don and Eddie retired to Florida soon after the move. Dick stayed in town and opened Dick's Place, on New York Avenue, in the old Manhattan Transfer Company building. Dick's Place, became the DC Eagle that we know today. The rest, as they say, is history. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dick McHugh McHugh was born May 27 , 1938 , in Newton , Mass. , into a family of 16 children - 10 boys and six girls. He was raised in the Boston area and served in the Air Force from 1960 to 1966.He studied electronics at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and later was a civilian employee working in communications at a military surveillance site in Greenland. He worked as an electrical technician for Graybar Electric in Delaware before moving to Washington in 1974.In 1987 , McHugh took over ownership of the Eagle , succeeding previous owner Don Bruce , McHugh's partner of 15 years , who died in 1992. McHugh retired in September 2000. McHugh helped many Gay organizations get off the ground , including the Atlantic States Gay Rodeo Association. He also supported organizations in the local leather/Levi community and helped many organizations under the umbrella of Brother, Help Thyself. He was a member and past president of the Bucks Motorcycle Club in Pittsburgh , Pa. , and a member of the Straight Eights Region of the Lambda Car Club. trio blue Active Assignment Weekly: Apr 26 - May 3rd: Water of Life By The Tamed Shrew (Kate) SUBJECT: Water of Life I live on a small offshore Island group in North West Scotland. I’m never far from the sea and the rain and wind are constant reminders of my position here on the edge of Scotland and the Atlantic. For this assignment, I’d like to see your feelings generated by the phrase “Water of Life” It can be a simple relationship between drinking and water or the necessity of water for all life, including crops. It could also be the drastic results of either too little or too much water. Your interpretation must have that element of water’s influence on life around us. WIT Well, I ended up doing a still life (as an excuse, my life is pretty still at the moment)! Post processing was to invert the colours, which were mainly browns, golds and white. My reasoning was to influence the mind into the cool water area rather than the hot fiery one of the whisky. :) exif Camera: Canon PowerShot G10 Exposure: 0.3 Aperture: f/3.2 Focal Length: 6.1 mm ISO Speed: 100 Exposure Bias: -1/3 EV Flash: Off, Did not fire K8 nice jugs Oh good grief. This is the third time I'm uploading it, because I keep noticing mistakes. Hopefully this is it. I really enjoyed the interview, and I hope to follow today's prompt another day. But I'm away from home, which means digital, which means limited skill set and limited stash. Thought I'd just keep it simple and follow the same style as yesterday's, since they're both for that mysterious food journey album. I'm doing NutriSystem (and quite enjoying it), and like every weight loss program, 8 8oz glasses of water is a must. I've never really taken that to heart, but since I know weight loss over 40 gets harder I figured I'd embrace it - I need all the help I can get. The thing on the left is from a NutriSystem app that I have on my phone - it tracks meals, water, exercise, weight, measurements, and even has a journal, so you can log other misc. stuff that might be of note. I think it's pretty cool, and I LeVE looking back at this water log (he he he) and seeing that I'm doing it. Komodo Dragon © All Rights Reserved No Usage Allowed in Any Form Without the Written Consent of Serena Livingston Description: Male Length: 2.6 m Weight: 90-kg Female Length: 1.5 m Weight: 45 kg Very large males have been recorded at 3 metres in length and a weight of more than 130 kg. The Komodo dragon, the largest lizard in the world, is a heavy, well-muscled lizard with a long thick head and neck. There are long curved claws on all four feet. The tail, which is about the same length as the body, tapers to a fine tip. Distribution: The Komodo dragon is found on only a few small islands in the Lesser Sunda archipelago of Indonesia; the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores and Gili Motang. Habitat: The climate is hot and dry but includes rocky slopes, savanna, forested valleys, mangrove swamps, coral reefs and sand bars. Komodo dragons are most commonly found in savanna and forest areas. Food: Young Komodo dragons eat geckos and live mostly in trees for their first year of life, until they are about 1.3 metres in length. At this stage they begin foraging on the ground for snakes, birds, pigs, goats and deer. Komodo dragons also scavenge on beaches for dead fish or any other carrion. Large adults are capable of killing animals as large as a 600-kg water buffalo. Komodo dragons gulp chunks of flesh whole and can consume up to 80% of their own body weight in one meal. Adult dragons also prey on younger members of their own species. Reproduction and Development: Komodo dragons become sexually mature at 5 to 7 years. During the breeding season, May through July, males often fight for hours for access to a female in breeding condition. From July through September females lay 15 to 30 leathery eggs, 7.5 cm in length, which incubate in unattended underground nests throughout the rainy season, from December through April. Females may guard their nests for a short period immediately after laying. Incubation time ranges from 200 to 250 days. At hatching the young are 40 cm in length and weigh about 100 g each. Hatchling dragons feed on insects and smaller reptiles, spending most of their time in trees where they are safe from adults of their own kind. By the time they are about 1.3 m in length most young dragons begin foraging on the ground. Captive Komodo dragons have survived to 35 years of age. Adaptations: The Komodo dragon is unique among lizards, as it is the top carnivore in its isolated environment. Long claws and very strong jaws and teeth help Komodo dragons catch and kill their prey. They are remarkably fast over short distances and can show great endurance in pursuit of deer that are their main prey. The claws are used for ripping open the bodies of prey animals. Although they have no venom, the saliva of Komodo dragons contains high concentrations of bacteria that cause severe infections in animals they attack and can eventually kill any prey animal that manages to escape. The teeth have serrated edges that saw easily through meat. Teeth that are lost are regrown throughout the life of the dragon. Four or five sets of replacement teeth may be present in the jawbone behind the exposed teeth. Because Komodo dragons can regulate their body temperature by basking in the sun or seeking shade to cool themselves, they require much less food than warm blooded carnivores such as a wild dogs or tigers. Adult Komodo dragons may be able to live on only one tenth the quantity of food needed by mammal predators of the same size. Their small island habitat therefore can sustain enough prey animals to support a healthy population of reptile predators where a mammal predator would probably soon eat itself out of "house and home". Komodo dragons swim well and have been known to cross the narrow ocean barriers between the islands they inhabit. Threats to Survival: Although it is relatively secure in this very limited habitat the Komodo dragon remains vulnerable to natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves. Grass fires that are often lit by poachers are also a recurring threat. Habitat on Flores Island, outside the protection of the park is becoming fragmented due to human encroachment. Indonesia is a country with a very large and growing human population and human demands for lands the dragon now occupies are likely to intensify. About 30 zoos in the world now house captive Komodo dragons and in May 1997 the Toronto Zoo joined the Species Survival Plan for this species when it received a young male and female from Indonesia. Careful breeding of the captive animals in zoos is an important part of the conservation plans for the Komodo dragon. Status: Rare, CITES appendix I (no legal trade), SSP(Species Survival Plan) at the Toronto Zoo .The government of Indonesia recognizes the Komodo dragon as a national treasure and, as early as 1928, declared Komodo Island a Wilderness Area to help conserve the Zoo Diet: Whole animals (rats) and Toronto Zoo carnivore mix.
