Beauty Helps People Get Jobs

"Little Fockers" leads chilly foreign box office

Teen star Steinfeld shows new `Grit' in debut role

And now I see this film put together, and it's just so incredible. I'm so proud of it."

Just as Mattie was fully formed at 14, they found Steinfeld had maturity and instincts beyond her years.
"She's totally unintimidated coming into this ff14 gil room with Jeff Bridges and Barry Pepper and doing these scenes," Joel Coen said. "It's not a question of experience or training or any of the rest of it. Either you've got it or you don't, sort of genetically, naturally, whatever it happens to be."
Bridges spends almost the entire movie in Steinfeld's company, but any worries he had about his young co-star quickly vanished.
"I was concerned right up to the first day we shot a big dialogue scene, and then I saw how invested she was in the character, how much talent and skill she had as an actress," Bridges said. "I was so thrilled and relieved."
Brolin, whose breakout role came in the Coens' "No Country for Old Men," said his own daughter auditioned to play Mattie. But there were no hard feelings when she got a look at who had won the role.
"I remember when my daughter came on the set and met Hailee, and she goes, `Oh my God! She's perfect!'" Brolin said.
Steinfeld decided at age 8 she wanted to try acting, inspired by a cousin who was doing commercials and a friend who was in a stage play. She raised the idea with her father, a personal fitness trainer, and mother, an interior designer. Her parents insisted that she study acting for a full year to make sure she was serious.
Then she got an agent and started trying out for roles. Like many actors, child or adult, she spent years auditioning with little to show for it.
"The most frustrating part was, I would get very close to booking things, and the biggest thing buy ffxiv gil that was held against me was I was always too green," Steinfeld said. "I would be up against girls who had been acting since they could speak.

Diet Holy Grail or Urban Food Legend?

Some websites (mostly disreputable blogs and weight-loss sites) claim that certain foods, because they’re tricky for our bodies to digest, actually burn more calories than they’re worth and therefore help us lose weight. This diet folklore surrounds low-cal foods like citrus, melon, and celery.
“It’s a huge rumor in the eating disorder community,” says Elaine Fung, a former anorexic who recently completed her master’s thesis on pro–eating disorder websites. “The thought is, if you eat these foods, they’ll help you lose even more weight than if you don’t eat at all.”
When I first came across this idea, I brushed it off as a silly diet myth. But I soon found that in a backward sort of way, there is some truth to this view of certain foods. But is it enough to make foods “negative calorie”? Not exactly.
Legend Has It …
According to diet legend, there are specific foods that cause our bodies to burn more calories than the amount we take in by eating them. Here’s how it works, according to NegativeCalorieFoods.com (come on, of course it exists): No food actually has a negative amount of calories, because all foods have some caloric runescape accounts value. But the overall effect of these particular foods balances out as negative because the energy we use to digest them is greater than the energy (or calories) than we consume in eating them. Skeptical? This diet “logic” gets even crazier.
This negative-calorie effect, according to diet lore, is true of only a special handful of foods that not only are low-calorie, but take a lot of work for our bodies to digest. “I figured if I ate one hundred calories of a food that only takes fifty calories to burn, I’m left with fifty extra calories. When I quickly peruse a few of these diet websites, it’s easy to see why she would think so. “Typically, a twenty-five-calorie piece of broccoli (100 grams) requires eighty calories to digest,” claims NegativeCalorieFoods.com, “resulting in a net loss of fifty-five calories.”
Eighty calories?! That’s like biking for ten minutes. This is either the diet holy grail or a darn good piece of urban food legend. Foods on the negative-calorie list include apples, asparagus, beets, berries, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, garlic, grapefruit, lemon, lettuce, onion, spinach, watermelon, and zucchini.
Even though it all sounded great to my non-nutritionist ears, I still found myself with more questions than answers. Does it really take different amounts of calories to digest runescape money different foods? What does nutrition science have to say about all this? And if these foods truly burn more than they’re worth, shouldn’t eating them be considered exercise, meaning I could literally eat my way to a smaller size?
Science or Wishful Thinking?
According to a heart disease study performed by Dr. Dean Ornish of the University of California, San Francisco, in which research subjects stuck to a diet consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables (the stars of the negative-calorie food lists), each of the subjects lost an average of twenty pounds—without exercising or adhering to any other diet plan. But was this really because of negative-calorie foods, or just because the participants avoided eating ten slices of bacon every day?
In hopes of getting to the bottom of this, I decided to start with the basics: calories. The calorie is the tiniest unit of energy we count; the more calories a food has, the more energy it gives us. A regular stalk of celery has about six calories. Apples have about seventy. And chocolate cake? We’re talking up to one thousand. Does eating celery burn more than eight calories, or an apple more than seventy?
All foods are made up of calories and nutrients (carbs, fats, and protein), plus vitamins and minerals. When we swallow certain combinations of these in various foods, they tell our bodies to produce certain amounts of enzymes, which show up just to digest whatever we eat. Negative-calorie believers assert that these special foods leave our bodies producing more enzymes than we need—meaning we use more calories in creating them than the food is worth.
Fuzzy science? “Yes! There’s runescape gold no evidence that any of these foods make us burn more calories than we would without eating them,” says Olivia Ramos, a Los Angeles-based nutritionist.
There’s Fiction, and Then There’s Fact
Clearly, I’m no nutritionist. So I enlisted Ramos, who helped me make sense of all the seemingly conflicting information.
The Fiction: Negative-calorie foods not only are very low in calories but also have a unique, powerful makeup that puts our bodies in superburn mode—powering through foods so quickly that we lose weight simply by eating.
The Fact: Eating and digesting food do create a slight spike in our metabolism, but it doesn’t add up to much—actually, less than 30 percent of the calories our bodies burn at any given time, says Ramos. Though celery, the poster child of negative-calorie foods, does contain a mere six calories, we expend only about half a calorie to digest it, according to Global Metabolism Myths, by Mitt Hickey. Guess that negative-calorie math doesn’t exactly measure up when we get specific. Bummer.
The Fiction: There are so few calories in negative-calorie foods that just chewing and swallowing them burns up more than the calories they contain (plus that cookie you ate a few minutes ago).

2. Get Fit / Exercise more. Do you know that over 60% of Americans are overweight or obese? A healthy body is the key to a healthy life. Very few of us exercise as frequently as we would like. When things get busy at work, our gym sessions are usually the first to go. Unfortunately, that also means an increasing waistline and wider hips as the years go by. Susan Boyle's 'Gift' keeps on giving atop chart

First underwater robot crossing Atlantic on display

Anything external that we chase cannot bring everlasting happiness, only temporary and fleeting happiness; at some point it will let us down.

We’re constantly worried someone’s going to scratch or bump our vehicle, rob our home, or break our hearts and hurt our feelings. Disney completes sale of Miramax to Ron Tutor

The two sides reached an agreement on the sale on July 29.

A bit more vitamin D is good, not too much

The decision by the prestigious Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, could put some brakes on the nation's vitamin D craze, warning that super-high levels could be risky.
"More is not necessarily better," cautioned Dr. Joann Manson of Harvard Medical School, who co-authored the Institute of Medicine's report being released Tuesday.
Most people in the U.S. and Canada — from age 1 to age 70 — need to consume no more than 600 international units of vitamin D a day to maintain health, the report found. People in their 70s and older need as much as 800 IUs. The report set those levels as the "recommended dietary allowance" for vitamin D.
That's a bit higher than the target of 400 IUs set by today's government-mandated food labels, and higher than 1997 recommendations by the Institute of Medicine that ranged from 200 to 600 IUs, depending on age.
But it's far below the 2,000 IUs a day that some scientists recommend, pointing to studies that suggest people with low levels of vitamin D are at increased risk of certain cancers or heart disease.
"This is a stunning disappointment," said Dr. Cedric Garland of the University of runescape money California, San Diego, who wasn't part of the institute's study and says the risk of colon cancer in particular could be slashed if people consumed enough vitamin D.
"Have they gone far enough? In my opinion probably not, but it's a step in the right direction," added prominent vitamin D researcher Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University Medical Center, who said the new levels draw needed attention to the vitamin D debate and encourage more food fortification.

Some studies show no effect, or even signs of harm.
A National Cancer Institute study last summer was the latest to report no cancer protection from vitamin D and the possibility of an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in people with the very highest D levels. Super-high doses — above 10,000 IUs a day — are known to cause kidney damage, and Tuesday's report sets 4,000 IUs as an upper daily limit — but not the amount people runescape accounts should strive for.
And Manson pointed to history's cautionary tales: A list of other supplements — vitamins C and E and beta carotene — plus menopause hormone pills that once were believed to prevent cancer or heart disease didn't pan out, and sometimes caused harm, when put to rigorous testing.

But here's the report's big surprise: While some people truly are seriously deficient in vitamin D, the average American in fact already has enough circulating in his or her blood — because we also make vitamin runescape money D from sun exposure, and because many people already take multivitamins or other D-containing dietary supplements.
Wait a minute: Headlines in recent years have insisted the opposite, that a majority of people don't get enough vitamin D, especially during the winter. What explains the contradiction?
Most testing laboratories are using a too-high cutoff for those blood levels, said report co-author Dr. Clifford Rosen of the Maine Medical Center. The report says at least 20 nanograms is adequate for bone health, while many labs instead list people as low if their blood levels are below 30 ng. Serious vitamin D deficiencies are diagnosed when levels dip well below 20, something that hasn't changed.
Rosen called the state of vitamin D testing "the wild, wild West," and said he hoped that "with this report, we can at least temper people's enthusiasm for just taking tons of supplements."
As for calcium, the report recommended already accepted levels to go along with your daily D — about 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day for most adults, 700 to 1,000 mg for young children, and 1,300 mg for teenagers and menopausal women. Too much can cause kidney stones; the report said that risk increases once people pass 2,000 mg a day.
It's true that most studies link poor health to vitamin D levels that are below 20 ng, said preventive cardiologist Dr. Erin Michos, a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine professor who wasn't part of the study.

Franco and Hathaway picked as co-hosts for Oscars

Both have done serious drama and comedy. Hathaway earned a best-actress Oscar nomination for 2008's "Rachel Getting Married" and starred in such comedies as "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada."
Outside the Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York, where she was presenting an award, Hathaway said she couldn't yet discuss her Oscar night duties.
"I can probably let it slip that I'm terrified and exhilarated and excited," she said.
Franco had an Emmy nomination for the title role of 2001's "James Dean," costarred in the Oscar-winning "Milk" and delivered a memorable comic turn as a spacey pot dealer in "Pineapple Express."
Hathaway also showed off her musical talents in a duet at the 2008 Oscars with the runescape money show's host, Hugh Jackman. Oscar producers were uncertain whether Franco can sing.

Dinosaur die-off cleared way for gigantic mammals

Within 25 million years of the dinosaurs' extinction — fast, in geologic terms — overall land mammals had reached a maximum size and then leveled off, an international team of scientists reports Friday in the journal Science. And while different species on different continents reached their peaks at different points in time, that pattern of evolution was remarkably similar worldwide.
"Evolution can happen very quickly when ecology permits," said paleoecologist Felisa Smith of the University of New Mexico, who led the research. "This is really coming down to ecology allowing this to runescape accounts happen."
Anyone who frequents natural history museums knows that the end of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago ushered in the age of mammals, and that some of them were gigantic. But the new study is the first comprehensive mapping of these giants in a way that helps explain how and why their size evolved.
"We didn't have a clear idea of how the story went after the extinction of the dinosaurs," explained Nick Pyenson, a curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, who wasn't involved with the new research.
Previous theories suggested that species diversity drove increases in size, but the new study didn't find that connection.
"It suggests there's a deeper explanation of how large body size evolves in mammals," he said.
Mammals did coexist with dinosaurs, but small ones, ranging from about the size of a mouse to a maximum of a small dog.
"We were pretty much the varmints scurrying around the feet of the dinosaurs," is how New Mexico's Smith puts it.
To see how that changed, researchers funded by the National Science Foundation collected fossil data on the maximum sizes attained by all major groups of mammals on each continent throughout their evolutionary history. How do they know the sizes? Smith said mammal teeth not only tend to runescape gold preserve better than bones, but they correlate very well to body mass.
The largest was that 17-ton rhino-like Indricotherium, followed closely by an elephant-looking creature named Deinotherium in Africa, Smith said. Contrast them to modern elephants, which average about 3 to 5 tons.
