I would have liked to do more for Dring (I already have another idea for next ride!) but I did give him a little tweed scarf/tie. :) light front rack basket for touring and commuting bike Coming out pretty well. Not sure how the 1/4 x .035" tubing will hold up, so this is an experiment. Needs a few more verticals to hold things in, a couple of cross braces, and a light mount. bred to shred Our local bike shop had one its annual downhill bike races today. Me and my buddy hike the trials and scoped out our spots to get some good shots. I had a few ideas of what I wanted to shoot, the whole "motion blur background" thing was one of them. I have a goal this summer to really get outside and get some good actions shots. There is so much to do in the town I live in and I need to get back into my photography. I also have a few cool ideas in store with mountain biking so stay tuned. I cannot wait to see it all finished up and play in it. This is going to be a lot of fun. I have the story all figured out for this little structure. 1990s Gitane Mystery Team Bike I got this early 90s Gitane Team frame from a seller in the UK. He said that he got it from a friend who had raced it in France. The Blue team color is odd because by the late 1980s Gitane Team bikes had switched to the white with black and yellow accents of the System U team. I'm unsure about the seat lug, but it has the vertical window common to most Frejus bikes, so it may have been factory cut. Total weight is under 23 pounds, This is my smallest bike; seat tube measures only 55 cm (center-to-top) or 53 cm (center-to-center) so this is really stretching the limits of what I can ride. To be honest, I would need to raise the seatpost over 2 inches (50 mm) from where it is seen "posed" here to ride it most comfortably. This means that when the saddle is raised it tends to re-direct a great deal of my weight onto the bars and puts strain on my wrists. So, sadly, I have put very little mileage on this bike. Purchased as a frameset, I have built it up with essentially the proper components which would include a complete Campagnolo Nuovo Record gruppo, less brake set. Even the crankset and rear derailleur are the correct undated models from before 1971. Saddle is an early Cinelli Unicanitor on a Campy record two-bolt post (27.2 mm). Pedals are Campy Record too (the nice early ones with strap loops) and the Alfredo Binda straps are the perfect color for the frame enamel. The brakeset is a mint condition Universal model 61 with center-pull calipers, quick release cable hangers, gum rubber hoods and black rubber caps on the cable adjusters of the levers. Again, the right components for this model. Handlebar and stem are by Ital-tubo-manubri (ITM) from around 1970, and in beautiful condition as well...but the correct stem would have been a 3TTT Gran Prix model (which was impossible to find). Chain and 5-speed freewheel are early Regina Oro placed directly from their boxes onto this bike only a couple hundred miles ago. All cables are modern and with teflon lined housings - so all components probably work more smoothly than when the bike was new. This bike has a wonderful ride with the quick steering of a racing bike of the day, yet smooth and comfortable enough for long days in the saddle. The paint has an uncommonly good lusterous finish for its age with mainly only a couple of notable chips at the dropouts. The only chrome is at the flat fork crown and it too is bright and unpitted, The bike is a real treasure. If it were a larger size, I'd ride it daily. The main flaw seen here is the missing downtube panel decal. The original was large a transparent self-adhesive transfer with all the lettering and border bands. The thick backing had turned brittle, cracked, chipped and separated from the bike and I eventually removed all the remaining fragments. After several years of searching, I finally found a correct varnish fix type decal (from Italy) and it is now on the bike. Today replacement decal sets are readily available. Delivery bicycles This was taken at the southwest corner of 96th & Amsterdam, where there's a fairly busy, popular pizza place. There were actually several more bikes besides the three photographed here; and for all I know, there were several more that were actually being used for deliveries... ******************** This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me. I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject. For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, homeless people, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ... The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. Aprilia RSV1000 For Sale: An Aprilia RSV Mille. 2002 Model. The good, the bad and the lovely. The good: The major service was performed by the Aprilia agents in Cape Town. You can contact them to confirm this, and I have paperwork for it. The service included pretty much everything from fork oil to opening the motor, checking the shims, etc. The shims were perfect by the way. The dealer told me the motor was in near perfect condition and that usually there is alway one shim to replace. They did however replace a engine cover bolt, which i'm sure THEY stripped. But anyway... The motor and electrics, etc, are in perfect condition. I've just had a tail light bulb go, so this would be my first electrical issue since I've owned the bike. I owned a suzuki prior to this and I had issues every week, so this bike is a major step up in my opinion. The bad: The bike has been dropped. The damage is cosmetic and most of it is confined to the left hand side plastics. It should be an easy repair. I shopped around for a complete makeover and came back with an estimate of R6500 to get the bike to look exactly what it looked like when it left the showroom floor. This included a complete respray (3 tone silver) of the bike as well as replacing plastics and a complete new (imported directly from the UK) sticker kit. I recon if you decided to just replace/repair the existing parts and get the stickers made locally, you're probably looking an amount thats considerably less. Nix graphics in Table View/Parklands does some real nice work with sticker kits and I'll definately recommend him. He's made a full set of custom stickers for my MX bike from a photo I got off the internet. I'm pretty sure he could do the same for you if you wanted a Colin Edwards or Haga replica sticker kit. The lovely: Packed with loads of torque it allows for an easy ride, some like to say lazy, but either way changing gears take effort. So Chapman's peak can be done entirely in 3rd gear (except for one corner) if you like and you can enjoy the view while your mates drop gears into the corners. It may not be the factory model, but it can hold it's own against tough competition. I regularly ride with a mate of mine who own's a ducati 998SP (limited edition Ohlin's suspension and tuned motor) and he only just outpaces me in the twisties. The fact of the matter is that he's probably a better rider... if only just :-) Mountain passes are a blast. The sound of a V-Twin echo'ing off the mountains definately sounds sooooo much sweeter than a 4 stroke rider murdering his bike down a straight. In the twisties it sticks in a corner and exits beautifully. It has an agressive riding position, and it's heavily front wheel based, which gives it the great cornering it's renown for. Just some info: Everything on the bike is original, including the tail pipe. This bike would suit pretty much anyone, but is probably not meant for someone who's 6 foot 4 or taller) The reason for this is that it has a shorter wheel base, giving it almost 600cc cornering abilities and feel, and this requires a taller persons to duck down lower, else feel some strain on the upper back. I don't let other people ride her. I have never taken her on the track. I replace anything that is faulty with genuine Aprilia parts. I can fix her up if you want, but then it will be R6500 more than the agreed price. Aprilia Cape Town will put it on their showroom floor for R75000 after I do the repairs. But since I don't want to invest more money or go through all the trouble as I travel alot, you can make me a offer in the R60 000 range. It will be sold to the highest offer. Why would I sell her? It could be any old number 1 of course so I've cheekily left a glimpse of the titanium expansion chambers in the bottom corner - just to prove its one of the greatest motorcycles....ever. El Parc Lineal Garcia Faria es el resultat d'una savia combinacio de topografia i vegetacio, quelcom que dona lloc a espais paral·lels molt ben diferenciats, separats per grans parterres, alguns de plans i altres d'atalussats. Ocupa l'espai situat sobre el gran aparcament que hi ha en un costat de la Ronda del Litoral. Per la banda de la muntanya s'esten un carril bici, llarguissim i molt ample, delimitat pel parterre que fa la funcio de mitgera entre les dues zones del parc i el parterre que el separa de la calcada del passeig que li dona nom. De tant en tant, els parterres s'interrompen en amples accessos de comunicacio entre un costat i l'altre del parc. Si passem a la banda del mar, el limit esdeve una mena de mirador sobre les platges properes. Aqui es on hi ha les zones d'estar i els jocs infantils. Es pot accedir directament a les platges creuant el parc pels carrers de Bac de Roda, la Selva de Mar i Josep Pla. Vegetacio El verd, organitzat en faixes, esta format per especies adequades a la situacio del parc, a primera linia de mar i sense elements construits que protegeixin la vegetacio. Es per aquest motiu que abunden els tamarius (Tamarix gallica). Als parterres que donen al passeig hi ha graminies de diferents especies, amb combinacions d'alcada molt ornamentals. Hi trobem Hyparrhenia sp., Festuca sp., Pennisetum setaceum i Pennisetum villosum. Tambe hi ha mates de Nassella tenuissima, una graminia que oneja harmoniosa quan bufa el vent. Juntament amb les graminies, els grans protagonistes vegetals d'aquest parc son els baladres (Nerium oleander), de floracions espectaculars, i les palmeres, sobretot les washingtonies (Washingtonia filifera). Tambe hi ha margallons (Chamaerops humilis) i, fent ombra, petits grups de morera del paper (Broussonetia papyrifera). Historia El Parc Lineal Garcia Faria forma part de la reordenacio urbanistica del front litoral del Besos, situat a la desembocadura del riu, que es va realitzar en motiu del Forum Mundial de les Cultures Barcelona 2004. Aquest esdeveniment va tenir com a principal objectiu la reflexio i el dialeg al voltant de la diversitat cultural, el desenvolupament sostenible i la pau. La nova urbanitzacio va permetre recuperar una gran extensio del front litoral situada entre els termes municipals de Barcelona i Sant Adria de Besos. ----------------------------------------- Garcia Faria Linear Park This park, which is more than a kilometre long, connects two large coastal green spaces in Barcelona: the Poblenou Park and the Diagonal Mar Park. It is ideal for bikes, either if you are on a leisure ride or trying to get around the area. The Garcia Faria Linear Park is also an excellent entrance to the beaches closest to Besos and the Barcelona 2004 Forum. The Garcia Faria Linear Park is the result of a wise combination of topography and vegetation. It gives rise to very different parallel spaces that are separated by large flower beds, some flat and others more inclined. It occupies the space located over the large parking area next to the Ronda Litoral coastal road. On the mountainous side, there is an extremely long and very wide bike path which is bordered by flower beds that serve as a median between the two park areas and the flower bed that separates it from the walkway that gives it its name. Every so many metres, the flower beds are interrupted by large entries that link one side of the park and the other. If you are walking on the sea side, the border becomes a kind of viewpoint over the nearby beaches. Here is where the rest areas and child play areas are located. The beaches can be accessed directly by crossing the park on Bac de Roda, Selva de Mar and Josep Pla streets. Vegetation The greenery, organized in strips, is made up of species that are suitable to the location of the park right on the beachfront and free of any man-made elements to protect the vegetation. This why the tamarisks (Tamarix gallica) are plentiful. There different fountain grass species with very ornamental height combinations in the flowerbeds that stretch to the walkway. You can find Hyparrhenia sp., Festuca sp., Pennisetum setaceum and Pennisetum villosum. There are also small bushes of Nassella tenuissima, grass that ripples harmoniously when the wind blows. Along with the grass, the main protagonists of this park are the spectacular blooming Oleanders (Nerium oleander) and the palm trees, especially the California fan palms (Washingtonia filifera).
