First Love - 080.365

First Love - 080.365

I can't believe I am at day 80!

Most people in my life today probably don't realize, or maybe don't even care, that I was actually a very different person before going to [business] school and becoming a "professional."

I indeed was a musician. I was pretty accomplished too. My first true love was playing the trumpet, and that love took me all over the US. My most rewarding experience was playing and marching with the Santa Clara Vanguard (from 1997-1999). I even ended up teaching marching band, along with playing with many different jazz bands and other ensembles along the way.

It's during those years with SCV that I really feel like I "grew up." I finally learned what hard work was, and even got a taste of victory and performing at the highest levels. It's those years that helped shape me into the man I am today.

That time seems like an eternity ago; an entirely different lifetime.

I don't expect most people to understand how or why my experiences shaped me, or the lifelong impact the Vanguard organization had on me. That would be silly. I just find it funny that some who know me today would never had imagined the life I experienced before.

Funny how time changes things.

gotta be somebody's jazz

gotta be somebody's jazz

Chris Potter and the UT Jazz Orchestra

Chris Potter and the UT Jazz Orchestra

In concert at UT's Bates Recital Hall, March 6, 2010. Chris Potter (born January 1, 1971) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Potter spent most of his childhood in Columbia, South Carolina where his mother taught psychology at the University of South Carolina. He exhibited an early interest in all kinds of music and quickly became a prodigy, mastering several instruments including guitar and piano, and finally gravitating toward the alto and tenor saxophone.

My son and I agreed that on an 'awesomeness' scale of 1-10, Potter comes in a 11. He's one of the very best sax musicians in the world today.

The person to his right is Gabriel Santiago, a Brazilian post-doc at UT Austin. He's not only a gifted composer and arranger - he's a jazz guitarist who is at least at the level of a Lee Ritenour. Look for good things from this artist in the future.

THE KORA PLAYER ......... LIVERPOOL

THE KORA PLAYER ......... LIVERPOOL

ENTERTAINER IN LIVERPOOL CHURCH STREET JUNE 2010

A kora is built from a large calabash cut in half and covered with cow skin to make a resonator, and has a notched bridge like a lute or guitar. The sound of a kora resembles that of a harp, though when played in the traditional style, it bears a closer resemblance to flamenco and delta blues guitar techniques. The player uses only the thumb and index finger of both hands to pluck the strings in polyrhythmic patterns (using the remaining fingers to secure the instrument by holding the hand posts on either side of the strings). Ostinato riffs ("Kumbengo") and improvised solo runs ("Birimintingo") are played at the same time by skilled players.

Kora players have traditionally come from griot families (also from the Mandinka nationalities) who are traditional historians, genealogists and storytellers who pass their skills on to their descendants. The instrument is played in Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso and The Gambia. A traditional kora player is called a Jali, similar to a 'bard' or oral historian. Most West African musicians prefer the term 'jali' to 'griot', which is the French word.

Traditional koras feature 21 strings, eleven played by the left hand and ten by the right. Modern koras made in the Casamance region of southern Senegal sometimes feature additional bass strings, adding up to four strings to the traditional 21. Strings were traditionally made from thin strips of hide, for example antelope skin - now most strings are made from harp strings or nylon fishing line, sometimes plaited together to create thicker strings.

By moving leather tuning rings up and down the neck, a kora player can retune the instrument into one of four seven-note scales. These scales are close in tuning to western Major, Minor and Lydian modes.
Increasingly koras are made with guitar machine heads instead of the traditional leather rings. The advantage is that they are much easier to tune. The disadvantage is that it limits the pitch of the instrument as the string lengths are more fixed and lighter strings are needed to lift it much more than a tone. Learning to tune a kora is arguably as difficult as learning to play it and many people entranced by the sound while in Africa, buy a kora and then find themselves unable to keep it in tune once they are home, relegating it to the status of ornament. Koras can be converted to replace the leather rings with machine heads. Wooden pegs and harp pegs are also used but both can still cause tuning problems in damper climates unless made with great skill.

Some kora players such as Seckou Keita have double necked koras, allowing them to switch from one tuning to another within seconds, and giving them increased flexibility. The kora is mentioned in the Senegalese national anthem "Pincez Tous vos Koras, Frappez les Balafons."

The happiest Luke and I could ever be was simply when we were together. Luke loved his daddy, daddy loved Luke just as much. By the end the only time Luke and daddy got to spend together was a two hour department of child safety visit once a week. That was all the time luke had to love daddy, and all the time daddy had to love Lukey. This decision was questioned by me 3 days before Luke copped his fatal blow to the head which fractured his skull.

I pointed out to the "reunification" team leader that other people got longer visits after 3 weeks, and I had been on two hour visits for six months. She stated flatly that was other people, not me. I was not to have longer visits with Luke, which meant I was nowhere nearer to getting my son back. Who can make this decision? One bitch with all the power at the department of child safety. And when I tried to argue the point, argue not just for my but for my boy, she said that department of child safety old favourite cliche... We're not getting anywhere here, we are just going around in circles. Oh, and yes you raised your voice, so the meeting is over. I didn't even get to raise my concerns about Luke being in that foster home with a 74 year old woman and three older children who were constantly bullying my baby. When I get angry I raise my voice. When those child safety banshees get angry they take your child. Then they lie and cheat to cover it up. I tried to hard to get my son back. All of my counsellors were the head of each department and they all met Luke and saw how I was with him. I have fought too hard, tried too hard, for this to be covered up. I am coming to put an end to this deceipt, corruption and mistreatment of families by this joke of a department. Luke is not coming back, but he is making a comeback and I will see to it in honour of the memory of my son that these parasites of the unfortunates, the upper hiearchy of the department of child safety get what is coming to them. Justice, coming straight from the little ones they are killing. I have endless amounts of fury after what these bitches did to my son, not to mention the way I have been treated. Forced to watch my son abused by his mother, do you know what it is like to have a department of child safety woman laugh at you when you tell her the mother of your child has burnt him with a cigarette. Taunting me... Can you prove it?
Yes I can, I have photographs.
Huh, do you know what date it is?
Well as a matter of fact I do. He still had the burn on his head when I called the police the time she sat and watched while my one year old baby poured the can of bourbon and coke all over his head, mouth, body and sat in a pool of bourbon. I could take no more. Especially after the cigarette burn incident.
But wait, do you have witnesses to the cigarette burn.
Yes I do.
The mother was allowed to get away with absolutely anything and I was never given up proper chance to give my son a proper chance. A chance to grow up with only love, not neglect and abuse.
The department of child safety didn't care a bit about my son. They treated it like some game, that they always win, so even when they kill a child, they aren't even worried. Well this is my son you killed you child murderers. And he is one of Gods children. I prayed for him for 20 years and wo betide the the people responsible for his death, or anyone who should try to cover it up, department of child safety, police force or the Cairns Post.
I am righteous, I have never been more righteous. I have never felt so much love for another person, and you ripped that from me, and then insult me. Try and cover up what you have done, but judges arent judges because they are there for looks. Any fool can see what has gone on here. You dont like me, so you took it out on my son. You would rather have him with a child abuser than a father who loves him.
You may have hated me, but let me tell you now. You don't know the meaning of hatred. I have a volcano exploding hatred inside of me, enough to burn your department to the ground. I will gladly tie a piece of rope to my arm, with the other end of the rope attached to a department of child safety man hater, with a knife each, like days of old, and fight to the death. I would walk ten paces back to back with a gun each, but the way child safety operates, they would be turning around at the fifth pace and shooting me in the back and laughing about it.

So... I guess I am lucky that you get to choose the weapon for battle. An honest intelligent judge and a courtroom, and a good solicitor on my side. Someone who is a professional at exposing lies and liars like the high and mighty man haters at the department of child safety. Bring it on bitches.
baby, dying, hospital, solicitor, lies, department, child, safety, bitches

NY Times, Dec. 4 2011
Colin Huggins was there with his baby grand, the one he wheels into Washington Square Park for his al fresco concerts. So were Tic and Tac, a street-performing duo, who held court in the fountain — dry for the winter. And Joe Mangrum was pouring his elaborate sand paintings on the ground near the Washington Arch.

Joe Mangrum showed his sand paintings on Sunday.
In other words, it was a typical Sunday afternoon in the Greenwich Village park, where generations of visitors have mingled with musicians, artists, activists, poets and buskers.

Yet this fall, that urban harmony has grown dissonant as the city’s parks department has slapped summonses on the four men and other performers who put out hats or buckets, for vending in an unauthorized location — specifically, within 50 feet of a monument.

The department’s rule, one of many put in place a year ago, was intended to control commerce in the busiest parks. Under the city’s definition, vending covers not only those peddling photographs and ankle bracelets, but also performers who solicit donations.

The rule attracted little notice at first. But the enforcement in Washington Square Park in the past two months has generated summonses ranging from $250 to $1,000. And it has started a debate about the rights of parkgoers seeking refuge from the bustle of the streets versus those looking for entertainment.

At a news conference in the park on Sunday organized by NYC Park Advocates, the artists waved fistfuls of pink summonses while their advocates, including civil rights lawyers, called on the city to stop what they called harassment of the performers.

“This is a heavy-handed solution to a nonexistent problem,” said Ronald L. Kuby, one of the lawyers.

The rule is especially problematic in Washington Square Park, performers say, because there are few locations across its 10 acres that are beyond 50 feet from a memorial or fountain — whether the bust of Alexander Lyman Holley, who introduced the Bessemer steel process to this country, or the statue of the Italian liberator Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Then there is the park’s international reputation as a gathering place for folk music pioneers and the Beats.

“Washington Square is the live-music park of New York City, and it would be close to impossible for any one of us to follow these regulations,” said Mr. Huggins, who has received nine summonses with fines totaling $2,250.

But Adrian Benepe, the parks commissioner, argues that there is ample room for performers away from the monuments. And, he added, a musician who is not putting out a tin cup is welcome to sit on the edge of the fountain or under a monument.

“It’s the whole issue of the ‘tragedy of the commons,’ ” he said. “If you allow all the performers and all the vendors to do whatever they want to do, pretty soon there’s no park left for people who want to use them for quiet enjoyment. This is a way of having some control and not 18 hours of carnival-like atmosphere.”

Gary Behrens, an amateur photographer visiting from New Jersey, applauded the city’s efforts to rein in the performers. “I’m O.K. with the guitar, but the loud instruments have taken over the park,” he said.

The lawyers and advocates, however, challenged the idea that street performers were selling a product as a vendor does. And threatening a lawsuit, they faulted the city for creating what they called “First Amendment zones” through the rules.

“Is this place zany?” asked Norman Siegel, the former director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. “You bet. Public parks are quintessential public forums. Zaniness is something we should cherish and protect.”

Park visitation has soared along with the rise of tourism in the last 15 years, and with it vendors and artists interested in a lucrative market.

Mr. Benepe insisted that the rules would not scare off future music legends.

“If Bob Dylan wanted to come play there tomorrow, he could,” he said, “although he might have to move away from the fountain.”

Oddly, the dispute coincided with the 50th anniversary of the so-called Folk Riot in Washington Square Park, when the parks commissioner tried to squelch Sunday folk performances. Hundreds of musicians gathered in protest, the police were called in and a melee ensued.

In April, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg wrote a letter commemorating the Folk Riot, saying he applauded “the folk performers who changed music, our city and our world beginning half a century ago.”

2. Playhouse Curtain Call

2. Playhouse Curtain Call

The stage is the shape of half of a violin body, each pylon is a violin neck and the low wall backdrop is an exaggerated violin bridge piece. Physically, the round hole is for the little performers to enter the stage. Metaphysically, it is a symbol for larger meanings. The washboards on either side of the circle can be played as musical instruments; round tubes of various sizes also produce music when stroked. The curtain is made of steel ropes suspending bells that ring when rattled. The transparent roof with peacock feather design inspires children to “show off” their talents like a proud peacock.

Deep Purple (10)

Deep Purple (10)

DEEP PURPLE

Deep Purple will perform their full concert including their hits Smoke On The Water, Black Night, Hush, Highway Star, Woman From Tokyo & much more.

Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse & Don Airey return to rock the foundations!

Since 2001, Deep Purple's keyboard wizard has been Don Airey (formerly from Ozzy Osbourne's band, Whitesnake & Rainbow) who joins a formidable line-up of rock legends.

Special guests - Electric Mary.

In-depth Biography
Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true institution of the British hard rock community; once credited in the -Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band, their revolving-door roster launched the careers of performers including Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, and Ian Gillan.

Deep Purple was formed in Hertford, England, in 1968, with an inaugural lineup that featured guitarist Blackmore, vocalist Rod Evans, bassist Nick Simper, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice. Initially dubbed Roundabout, the group was first assembled as a session band for ex-Searchers drummer Chris Curtis but quickly went their own way, touring Scandinavia before beginning work on their debut LP, Shades of Deep Purple. The most pop-oriented release of their career, the album generated a Top Five American hit with its reading of Joe South's "Hush" but otherwise went unnoticed at home. The Book of Taliesyn followed (in the U.S. only) in 1969, again cracking the U.S. Top 40 with a cover of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman."

With their self-titled third LP, Deep Purple's ambitions grew, however; the songs reflecting a new complexity and density as Lord's classically influenced keyboards assumed a much greater focus. Soon after the album's release, their American label Tetragrammaton folded, and with the dismissals of Evans and Simper, the band started fresh, recruiting singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover from the ranks of the pop group Episode Six.

The revamped Deep Purple's first album, 1970's Concerto for Group and Orchestra, further sought to fuse rock and classical music. When the project, which was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, was poorly received, Blackmore took creative control of the band, steering it towards a heavier, guitar-dominated approach which took full advantage of Gillan's powerful vocals. The gambit worked; 1970's Deep Purple in Rock heralded the beginning of the group's most creatively and commercially successful period. At home, the album sold over a million copies, with the subsequent non-LP single "Black Night" falling just shy of topping the U.K. pop charts. Released in 1971, Fireball was also a smash, scoring a hit with "Strange Kind of Woman."

Plans to record the follow-up at the Casino in Montreux, Switzerland, were derailed after the venue burned down during a live appearance by Frank Zappa, but the experience inspired Deep Purple's most enduring hit, the AOR staple "Smoke on the Water." The song, featured on the multi-platinum classic Machine Head, reached the U.S. Top Five in mid-1972 and positioned Deep Purple among rock's elite; the band consolidated its status with the 1973 studio follow-up Who Do We Think We Are and the hit "Woman from Tokyo." However, long-simmering creative differences between Blackmore and Gillan pushed the latter out of the group that same year, with Glover soon exiting as well. Singer David Coverdale and bassist/singer Glenn Hughes were recruited for 1974's Burn, and Gillan meanwhile formed a band bearing his own name.

After completing 1974's Stormbringer, Blackmore left Deep Purple as well, to form Rainbow with vocalist Ronnie James Dio; his replacement was ex-James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin, who made his debut on Come Taste the Band. All the changes clearly took their toll, however, and following a farewell tour, the group dissolved in 1976. Coverdale, meanwhile, went on to form Whitesnake, and Bolin died of a drug overdose later in the year.

The classic lineup of Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover, and Paice reunited Deep Purple in 1984 for a new album, the platinum smash Perfect Strangers. The House of Blue Light followed three years later, but as past tensions resurfaced, Gillan again exited in mid-1989. Onetime Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner was recruited for 1990's Slaves and Masters before Gillan again rejoined to record The Battle Rages On..., an apt title as Blackmore quit the group midway through the supporting tour, to be temporarily replaced by Joe Satriani.

In 1994, Steve Morse took over the guitar slot (fresh from a stint in Kansas), and the revitalized group returned to the studio for 1996's Purpendicular, which proved a success among the Purple faithful. 1998's Abandon followed, as well as a 1999 orchestral performance released the follo

Gibson Logo

Orville Gibson (born 1856, Chateaugay, New York) started making mandolins in 1894 in Kalamazoo, Michigan USA. The mandolins were distinctive in that they featured a carved, arched solid wood top and back and bent wood sides. Prior to this mandolins had a flat solid wood top and a bowl-like back (similar to a Lute) made of multiple strips of wood. These bowl-back mandolins were very fragile and unstable. Gibson described them as "looking like potato bugs." Gibson's innovation made a better-sounding mandolin that was immensely easier to manufacture. The popularity of the mandolin in these days led to a demand for Gibson's mandolins.

In 1902, the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co, Ltd. was founded to market the instruments. Within a short period after the company was started, the board passed a motion that "Orville H. Gibson be paid only for the actual time he works for the Company." After that time, there is no clear indication whether he worked there full-time, or as a consultant. Gibson was considered a bit eccentric and there has been some question over the years as to whether or not he suffered from some sort of mental illness.

Starting in 1908, Orville was paid a salary of $500 by Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Co., Limited (equivalent to $20,000 a year in modern terms). He had a number of stays in hospitals between 1907 and 1911. In 1916, he was again hospitalized, and died on August 21, 1918 in St. Lawrence State Hospital, a psychiatric center in Ogdensburg, New York

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Gibson company was responsible for many innovations in guitar design, and became the leading manufacturer of arch-top guitars, particularly the Gibson L5 model. In 1936 they introduced their first "Electric Spanish" model, the ES-150, generally recognized as the first commercially successful electric guitar.

In 1952, Gibson launched a solid-bodied guitar designed in collaboration with the popular guitarist Les Paul. The late 1950s saw a number of innovative new designs including the eccentrically-shaped Gibson Explorer and Flying V and the semi-acoustic ES-335, and the introduction of the "humbucker" pickup. The Les Paul was offered in several models, including the Custom, the Standard, the Special and the Junior. In 1961, the body design of the Les Paul was changed, due to the high cost of making the elaborate maple/mahogany body. Les Paul did not care for the new body style and let his endorsement lapse, and the new body design then became known as the Gibson SG. The Les Paul returned to the Gibson catalogue in 1968 due to the influence of players such as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. Both the Les Paul and the SG later became very popular with hard rock and heavy metal guitarists; Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin , Dickey Betts of The Allman Brothers Band and Ace Frehley of Kiss are known for their preference for a Les Paul Standard, and Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath are some of the more well-known SG players.

Between 1974 and 1984, production of Gibson guitars was shifted from Kalamazoo to Nashville, Tennessee. Further production plants were also opened in Memphis, Tennessee as well as Bozeman, Montana. The Memphis facility is used for semi-hollow and custom shop instruments, while the Bozeman facility is dedicated to acoustic instruments.

Following financial troubles, the Gibson Guitar Corp. was bought by Henry E. Juszkiewicz, David H. Berryman and Gary A. Zebrowski in early 1986. The survival and success of Gibson today is largely attributed to this change in ownership. Currently, Juszkiewicz stands as CEO and Berryman as president of the company.

From Wikipedia.com : "Gibson Guitar Corporation, of Nashville, Tennessee, USA, is one of the world's best-known manufacturers of acoustic and electric guitars. The company's most popular guitar, the Les Paul Standard, a solid-body electric, sells for about $US 2,300. Gibson also makes guitars under such brands as Epiphone, Kramer, Valley arts, Tobias, Steinberger, and Kalamazoo. In addition to guitars, the company makes pianos through its Baldwin unit, Slingerland drums, as well as many accessory items. Company namesake Orville Gibson made mandolins in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the late 1890s. Gibson used the same type of carved, arched tops in archtop acoustic guitars, and by the 1930s was also making flattop acoustic guitars and electric guitars. Charlie Christian, the first well-known electric guitarist, helped to popularize Gibson's electric guitars with his use of the ES-150 and ES-200. After being bought by the Norlin corporation in the late 1960s Gibson's quality and fortunes took a steep decline; by 1985 it was within three weeks of going out of business before it was bought by its present owners.[1] Gibson Guitar is a privately held corporation (company stock is not publicly traded on a stock exchange), owned by chief executive officer Henry Juszkiewicz and president David H. (Dave) Berryman."
