PERUVIAN LILY ALSTROEMERIA AURANTIACA 10 seeds

PERUVIAN LILY ALSTROEMERIA AURANTIACA 10 seeds

Plants grow around 36 inches tall. These seeds will give a mix of colors including apricot, melon to salmon-pink, cerise and many different reds from light too deep. Great cut flowers. Plants will become dense and spreading when established in the landscape, they can also be grown as a pot plant in a cool green house or sun room in colder climates. 'Peruvian Lily' will do best in a sunny exposure in cooler locations or part shade were it is hot. They should be given deep, humus rich, moisture retentive soils that are well draining. Hardy zone 6-11, in colder climates needs a lot of mulch protection in the winter if left outside.

The bride picked out fabulous flowers - reds with orange accents - makara orchids, parrot tulips, mini calla lilies, roses and alstroemeria.
Been a bridesmaid a few times, but this was my first crack at matron of honor.

Peruvian Lily - 200 Seeds

Peruvian Lily is a fragant, mixed color perennial that can be grown outside or as a container plant. It is great as a cutflower as it lasts long in a vase and has long stems with handsome foilage and is topped off with a bouquet of different colored 2 inch flowers. To grow Peruvian Lily flower seed, seek the seeds overnight, then plant in potting medium. Lightly cover the seeds and keep moist. Once established, Peruvian Lily's tubers spread rapidly about a foot underground, so might need a deep border to keep the plant from becoming invasive. In Northern climates will need to mulch heavily to keep the plant from freezing.

This bouquet is the latest 'willing' victim/subject for my macro shots! It was captured through the Cosina 55mm f/1.2 shot wide-open. Compensation is probably due me from the lens manufacturer for the promotion they get!

The painting behind the arrangement was done by my wife, Brenda, in 2002.

BTW, we were going to see the Philadelphia Flower Show but decided against it due to the prohibitively priced tickets.

Alstroemeria Seedpods

I saw these Alstroemeria seedpods on my friend's flower bouquet, so of course I had to save it. I'll dry it out first and hopefully it'll have viable seeds.

During my trip to Orlando last week, one of the service providers had champagne and chocolate delivered to our rooms. The entire tray was covered with chocolate shaped flowers filled with cream, chocolate covered strawberries and everything was laid on top of this delicious brown sugar concoction. Paired with a bottle of champagne, I was totally spoiled by the end of the trip. A girl could get used to this!

Plants of the Tahoe Basin: Flowering Plants, Trees, and Ferns

Plants of the Tahoe Basin: Flowering Plants, Trees, and Ferns

This is the first comprehensive illustrated guide to the trees, ferns, and flowering plants of the Tahoe Basin. Covering more than 600 species, many of them rare, and with over 300 color photographs, here is the most complete and up-to-date wildflower guide available for this floristically rich region.
Michael Graf discusses native higher vascular plants: flowering plants, ferns and their allies, and conifers. He covers the Tahoe region from Desolation Wilderness in the west to the Carson Range in the east and includes Donner Lake and Pass, Sagehen Meadows, Castle Peak, Pole Creek, Shirley Canyon, Granite Chief, and Alpine Meadows in the north; and Hope Valley and Carson and Luther Passes in the south. Each of these areas represents extensions of Tahoe Basin plant communities, and the entire region offers spectacular wildflower viewing.
The book is arranged taxonomically, thereby helping readers to develop a basic understanding of plant families, genera, and species. Each species account includes size, bloom period, and preferred habitat, and a full description follows, including clues for identification, notes on where to view the plant, use by humans, and additional ecological information. An introductory section discusses the evolutionary principles of plant taxonomy and the geologic and climatic history of the Tahoe Basin, its vegetative ecology, and its environmental history from the time of the Washoe Indians to the present.
An appendix provides a family key, a glossary, and drawings of plant anatomy. Throughout the book, taxonomic information is based on the 1993 edition of the Jepson Manual. With its clear descriptions, beautiful photographs, and information on everything from pollination to conservation, this book should be in the backpack of anyone who loves wildflowers, from amateur to professional field biologist.

I've always wanted my own little olive tree and this year I treated myself, planting one in the warmest spot in the garden, in a huge pot inherited from my parents' house. If even *half* these tiny flowers produce fruit I will be one happy bunny - it's positively covered in blossom.

The Book of Ebenezer Le Page (New York Review Books Classics)

Ebenezer Le Page, cantankerous, opinionated, and charming, is one of the most compelling literary creations of the late twentieth century. Eighty years old, Ebenezer has lived his whole life on the Channel Island of Guernsey, a stony speck of a place caught between the coasts of England and France yet a world apart from either. Ebenezer himself is fiercely independent, but as he reaches the end of his life he is determined to tell his own story and the stories of those he has known. He writes of family secrets and feuds, unforgettable friendships and friendships betrayed, love glimpsed and lost. The Book of Ebenezer Le Page is a beautifully detailed chronicle of a life, but it is equally an oblique reckoning with the traumas of the twentieth century, as Ebenezer recalls both the men lost to the Great War and the German Occupation of Guernsey during World War II, and looks with despair at the encroachments of commerce and tourism on his beloved island.

G. B. Edwards labored in obscurity all his life and completed The Book of Ebenezer Le Page shortly before his death. Published posthumously, the book is a triumph
of the storyteller’s art that conjures up the extraordinary voice of a living man.

"Imagine a weekend spent in deep conversation with a superb old man, a crusty, intelligent, passionate and individualistic character at the peak of his powers as a raconteur, and you will have a very good ideas of the impact of The Book of Ebenezer Le Page...It amuses, it entertains, it moves us...” –The Washington Post

"A true epic, as sexy as it is hilarious, it seems drenched with the harsh tidal beauties of its setting...For every person nearing retirement, every latent writer who hopes to leave his island and find the literary mainland, its author–quiet, self-sufficient, tidy Homeric–remains a patron saint." –Allan Gurganus, O Magazine

Flowers On Main (Chesapeake Shores)

When her last two plays are dismal failures and her relationship with her temperamental mentor falls apart, writer Bree O'Brien abandons Chicago and the regional theater where she hoped to make a name for herself to return home. Opening Flowers on Main promises to bring her a new challenge and a new kind of fulfillment.
But not all is peaceful and serene in Chesapeake Shores, with her estranged mother on the scene and her ex-lover on the warpath. Jake Collins has plenty of reasons to want Bree out of his life, but none of those are a match for the one reason he wants her to stay: he's still in love with her.
Jake might be able to get past that old hurt if he knew Bree was home to stay, but is she? The only way to know for sure is to take a dangerous leap of faith.

Flowers In The Rough

Flowers In The Rough

This is within eye shot of the 'red dot tree'.

Instead of asking why this is in the middle of nowhere, a little history lesson is in order...

The area depicted within, used to be a large rubbish pile a/k/a illegal dump. Being that there was no active dumping here since the 50's, these flowers are at the site of one of the few 60's deposits in this woods. It was a large pile of bricks and blocks. My next question is even stranger. Being that bricks and blocks don't decompose, what happened to them? I noticed them gone about 10 years ago. These flowers are in memoriam of the bricks and blocks that was here some 45 years ago.

Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.
~Hans Christian Andreson~

On the way to my mom's this afternoon, hubby and I stopped along the roadside to take a few pictures... He headed for the train tracks, I headed for the woods... Not sure what he ended up photographing but this is what I captured. I don't know what that name of this flower is, but I love how simple and dainty it is...

Hope you all had a blessed Easter day. God bless.

Killer in The Woods: A Psychological Thriller

In the town of Bluffs Bay, Washington, a serial killer dubbed by the press as “The Woods Strangler” is killing beautiful women in the affluent neighborhood of The Woods.

In an effort to bring the community together to fight this terror, Selene Herrera, director of a local battered women’s shelter, helps establish a neighborhood crime watch group.

She is newly married to her second husband, Quinn, who is named the director of The Woods Citizens Against Crime group. A best-selling mystery novelist and nonfiction writer, he too is on a second marriage, having lost his first wife to violence.

The Herreras’ life together is threatened when Selene’s abusive ex-husband, Michel Giovanni, shows up in town under the guise of seeking the reward money offered for information leading to the killer. But he soon begins to stalk Selene, wanting her back and determined to have her any way he can.

Selene starts to receive calls from an anonymous caller implicating Quinn as The Woods Strangler. Though she tries to dismiss it, the chilling calls and continued murders unnerve Selene and threaten to undermine her marriage.

Quinn fights the allegations as best as possible, while keeping secrets that he fears could destroy his life with Selene.

Selene is also faced with the demands of running a battered women’s shelter, including trying to help a battered policewoman and dealing with a fire at the shelter caused by an arsonist.

A strong set of supporting characters include:

Police Officer Ashley Leighton, who hides her dangerous abusive relationship while trying to do her job in pursuit of a killer.

Homicide Detective Dennis Cramer, who is faced with the realization that a serial killer might be one of his neighbors in The Woods and must be stopped at all costs.

Marvin and Elisa Bonet, the Herreras’ next-door neighbors.

Todd Foxworth, a spa owner whose girlfriend becomes a victim of the strangler.

And Julian McKenzie, a local firefighter.

Selene tries to keep her head above water as the killer prowls the neighborhood and sets his sights on her to join his growing list of victims.

The Dings Bristol BS2

The Dings Bristol BS2

1911 local children of St.Philips on a School Outing outside a Bristol sweet shop in the Dings area. (road not known) Favorite sweets of the time were Handmade Edwardian aniseed rock, Multi-coloured fruit flavoured gobstoppers, Barley Sugar. There were no packaged sweets,ice-creams or crisps, and. children had very little money to buy things ...

Memories of Schooldays in Bristol during the First World War 1917—1922 by Jessie Sheppard

1917 started gloomily, mother and I went to the pictures on Mondays and Thursdays at the Old Gem, Merchant Street. On our way into town, down Alfred Hill, past the Infirmary, we used to wave to the soldiers on the balcony from the steps. New Zealand and Australian wounded soldiers though they might have been, they were very cheerful and often threw down sweets to children passing by.

Mother and I used to get some Wills Gold Flake cigarettes and throw these up to them. The nights were dark as the glass at the top of the street lights were painted dark brown. No shop lights. Going down the steps wasn’t too bad as the reflected light from the Infirmary lit them a little. On the other evenings, we stayed at home to read — Buffalo Bill, Sexton Blake and Tinker, Nelson Lee and Nipper and Nick Carter, Mother would read one chapter and I would read the next.

When it was my turn to read, mother knitted and I knitted whilst mother read. We made socks for the Red Cross. I was no good at sewing, writing or drawing, but took prizes for knitting. At this time I was staying in school for dinner, we had to eat it in the playground or the cloakroom in the winter, I sat on the hot water pipes to eat mine. Mother gave me a penny on Tuesdays — ?d for fish, ?d for chips and scrumpies for dinner. The rest of the week — ?d for fish or chips.

Often I would buy sweets instead and just eat the piece of bread and marge I was supposed to eat with dinner. There had been a drought during the summer of 1916, the water was turned off from 2 p.m. until 6 o’clock the next morning. I had to come home at lunch time to fill a bath with water for our use. At this time the Grammar School bell came in very handy as it rang at 1.40 p.m. and 8.45 a.m., this gave me the five minutes I needed to get to school.

By now I was reading Sherlock Holmes at school, the other books we read at night — mother said not to mention them at school as they weren’t the sort of books I should be reading. We used to change these with my friend’s father who got all his from the pub, buying two books a week ourselves. We had a card sometime in February from Dad saying he expected to be home on leave soon. Our postman, Mr Lloyd, used to call out wherever we were in the street if there was a letter or card for us.

In those days we had three posts a day and you could ask the postman or postlady if there were any letters and they would give them to you — not at all like today! The policeman were also wonderful; one of them, a young one, we used to wait for and lassoo him as he came round the corner of the street and we wouldn’t let him go until we had a sweet each. He would always warn us when a change meant an older man, who would not appreciate our jokes, would be on duty, and of course we made sure we never upset them.

At Christmas time we used to give them a bar of chocolate each. The young one brought a bag of sweets between us, to our sorrow he left us in the summer of 1917— he was called up.The pictures of Kitchener and his slogan ‘Your Country Needs You’ were beginning to fade. The battle of the Somme started and on the 1st April, whilst playing ball outside my door with the boy next door, we were surprised to see a little soldier whose kit was as large as himself, and with a huge moustache coming up the court. Bert said ‘It’s Mr Jones’ — I didn’t believe him but stepped inside the door and said to mother ‘I think it’s Dad’ — it was.

By the time mother and I had finished crying at seeing him, the kettle boiled and we had tea. Dad took out a long stick of real white bread, all the way from France. He also brought me another little doll, a white rosary and a red - white and blue rosary for mother; for her too a pink silk handkerchief sachet with a little cottage and the words ‘To my dear Wife’ printed on it, also a large handkerchief, which I still have, cotton with each corner having a General and different war scenes all over it.

Dad was home for seven days, I had a week from school as did most children when fathers came home on leave, with no loss of marks. Mother was very worried as several of our friends’ relatives who had been on leave had been reported missing or killed about a month after going back on duty. Dad went back and things settled down again. At school we were now collecting for the Red Cross — ?d per week and eggs for wounded soldiers at the Infirmary — ?d. Money collected for the Infirmary was used to buy eggs and taken down in a galvanised bath every Friday afternoon.

Modular Project

Modular Project

The aim for this project was to create a final piece with modular elements. I started by working with paper, looking at how I could make my own modules and how they could connect and combine together. On this sheet I have included photos sketchbook documenting my process of my work. I have looked at a postcard which had an image of an octopus like starfish as inspiration for the paper cut outs above; I also made smaller paper cut outs below for trial and error. The 3D pieces is where I have been looking at origami, I have folded individual paper triangles that interlock into a modular sculpture, also a origami flower made from fabric and paper using nature as a source of inspiration.

From Wikipedia:

Lantana is a genus of about 150 species of perennial flowering plants, native to tropical regions of the Americas, Africa and existing as an imported plant in numerous areas, especially in the Australian-Pacific region. The genus includes both herbaceous plants and shrubs growing to 0.5–2 m (1.6–6.6 ft) tall. Their common names are shrub verbenas or lantanas.

Lantana's aromatic flower clusters (called umbels) are a mix of red, orange, yellow, or blue and white florets. Other colors exist as new varieties are being selected. The flowers typically change color as they mature, resulting in inflorescences that are two- or three-colored. A common name for Lantana camara is "Ham 'n Eggs" due to the adjacent pink and yellow inflorescences.

"Wild lantanas" are plants of the unrelated genus Abronia, usually called "sand-verbenas".

DEDICATED TO MY GURU: ARTIST SILPI
Silpi brought the temple Garbagrahas (sanctum sanctorum) to the homes of the devotees – this is the thought in many viewers’ mind when they look at the paintings of deities by Silpi, born Srinivasan. One might say that there is not a temple in the length and breadth of India that he had not visited or drawn/painted the images of the gods and goddesses enshrined in them. With the blessings of the Paramacharya Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and as per his advice, Silpi undertook to painting the images of the deities as they were with all the minor details, without adding or deleting or interpolating his own imagination. The process of painting the deities in the temples was like a meditation for him, and from the first moment he began it was as though the divine hand guided him at every step.

P.M. Srinivasan was born in Namakkal near Salem , though his ancestors were originally from Nagappattinam. He was more interested in drawing than going to school for formal education. It was his good fortune that he met the well known patriotic poet Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai, who was also a good artist; he encouraged Silpi and sent him to Madras (Chennai) to join the School of Arts & Crafts. He mastered the technique of pen and ink drawing so well that the principal of the School D.B. Roy Choudhury considered him better than many of the western artists known for their pen and ink drawings.

When he was still a student at the School, Silpi got to know artist Mali , who was a cartoonist and in charge of the art department at the popular Tamil weekly ‘Anandavikatan’. Silpi was very attracted to Mali ’s work, while the senior was quite impressed by Silpi’s talent and encouraged him to contribute to the magazine. Mali used to insist that the young aspirant should draw a certain number of pictures everyday. After completing his course in the School, Mali invited him to join ‘Anandavikatan’. Silpi had done numerous studies of people traveling in the tram in which he used to commute and his relatives and friends. He used to cover political and social events for the magazine; instead of photographs the magazine used to publish his drawings when reporting the events. Thus so many political leaders, foreign visitors, philanthropists etc have been portrayed by him and most of the time he also got them to autograph his drawings.
Srinivasan was rechristened ‘Silpi’ by Mali , as he used to draw with every little detail ancient stone and metal sculptures in the temples as also the temples themselves. Soon he started to specialize in that genre of work. Being very pious, he was also a devotee of the Paramacharya Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamkoti Peetam. The sage advised him to concentrate on covering as many temples as possible in the country and depict the sculptures. He had visited numerous temples in the nooks and corners of the country, with minimum transport facilities available in those days; in many small villages there were no proper places to stay even. But all those problems never seemed to bother him.

In the main shrines of temples there is no other light except that from the oil lamps and perhaps a little from the entrance. Silpi never used any artificial lighting to do his work. Ordinary devotees are not allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum or Garbagriha. But Silpi had the special privilege of entering that consecrated chamber and allowed to draw the images from close quarters. He would go there after a bath when there are not many visitors. Before starting to draw, Silpi would spend a few minutes in meditation praying to the god to guide him to do a proper depiction in all the forty days, five hours a day that took him to complete the work; and the result would appear as if the gods themselves had drawn the pictures through the artist. While the stone carvings, be it sculptures in the full or reliefs, or the architectural details, were drawn meticulously in pen and ink, the deities in the shrines were painted with the exact tone of colours, every fine details of the jewellery, the floral decorations, the softly burning oil lamps, the smoke from the incense and the smears of kumkum (vermillion) or the sandal paste. He would first draw the details of the jewellery separately looking at them from close quarters. The priests were willing to listen to his suggestions and would adorn the flower garlands without disturbing the dieties’ images; sometimes Silpi himself was allowed to decorate the images, such was his devotion and reputation.

When sketching the external parts of the temples he used to perch himself at odd places, sometimes at the edge of cornices hardly ever minding the physical discomfort. Even the widest angle camera cannot capture the totality of the temple premises as he could in his depictions. Even the smallest sculpture on the top of a tower would appear in his drawings, which often would escape a less keen eye. From 1

Middleton S. and Emilie Neilson Burrill House

Middleton S. and Emilie Neilson Burrill House

Murray Hill, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

In 1902-03 the prominent architectural firm of Hoppin & Koen remodeled a c.1862 brownstone row house to create this impressive Beaux Arts style mansion for Middleton S. Burrill and his wife Emilie Neilson Burrill. Burrill, a socially prominent attorney and businessman who was the first mentor of the famed Wall Street financier Bernard Baruch, purchased the house in 1901 and hired Hoppin & Koen to alter the house by adding an elegant Beaux Arts style facade, which combines elements derived from French and English 17th and 18th century sources. Hoppin & Koen designed several significant public installations, but also were known for their design of elaborate country houses.

The Burrill house features a two-story limestone base with arched openings at the parlor level that is surmounted by a balustrade resting on massive console brackets. The Philadelphia brick and limestone-trimmed upper stories display ornate molded window enframements, with the second story having pedimented window frames enriched with console brackets, dentils, and guttae, and the third story having eared surrounds with prominent keystones and projecting sills. The richly embellished entablature above the third story combines limestone moldings and frieze panels with elaborate console brackets and a modillioned cornice that is capped by a copper balustrade. The mansard roof has elaborate copper dormers capped by round-arched pediments.

The Burrills left the house in 1929 after which it was used as a rooming house in until 1945, when the property was sold by the trustees of the Burrill estate and converted into apartments and a medical office. The Middleton S. and Emilie Neilson Burrill House remains an impressive example of a Beaux Arts style row house in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan.

DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

The Development of Murray Hill and East 38th Street

Prior to the arrival of the European fur traders and Dutch West India Company, Manhattan and much of the modern-day tri-state area was populated by bands of Lenape Indians. The Lenape traveled from one encampment to another with the changes of the seasons. Fishing camps were occupied in the summer and inland camps were used during the fall and winter for harvesting crops and hunting. The main trails ran the length of Manhattan from the Battery to Inwood following the course of Broadway adjacent to present-day City Hall Park before veering east toward the area now known as Foley Square. It then ran north traversing modern-day Fifth and Park Avenues in the vicinity of Murray Hill. In 1626, Dutch West India Company Director Peter Minuit “purchased” the island from the Lenape for sixty guilders worth of trade goods.

Under the English colonial government in the mid-18th century the area then known as Inclenberg was leased to some of the city’ prominent residents; including Robert Murray (17211786) a Scottish-born merchant and ship owner for whom the Murray Hill neighborhood is named. His leasehold was a wedge-shaped parcel of more than twenty-nine acres that extended roughly from just south of present-day East 33rd Street to present-day East 38th Street and was bounded on the west by the Middle Road, near present-day Madison Avenue, and on the east by the Eastern Post Road, near present-day Lexington Avenue. Murray’s property was dominated by a gentle rise where, roughly at the intersection of present-day East 37th Street and Park Avenue, he erected a mansion prior to 1762.

An active member of the Society of Friends or Quakers, Murray left instructions that upon his death in 1786 a certain bequest be “put out at interest” to be applied to the Friends School and that another be held until the society built a room for the Meeting House to accommodate women’s meetings. Murray was also interested in the manumission of slaves and the safety and welfare of those liberated. In his will he left a bequest to the society for the promoting the manumission of slaves to establish a free school for African-American children. Robert Murray’s real estate holdings at the time of his death were bequeathed to his children.

As the population centers of Manhattan were expanding outward, the state legislature, in 1807, established a commission made of Gouverneur Morris, State Surveyor Simeon De Witt and merchant John Rutherford to plan for the city’s growth. The commissioners established the street grid of twelve north-south avenues intersected by 155 east-west streets. Critical to the development of Murray Hill were the openings of Lexington Avenue and Madison Avenues to 42nd Street in 1833 and 1836 respectively and the closing of the Eastern Post Road between East 31st Street and East 42nd Street in 1848 at which time the Common Council conveyed the land to adjoining property owners.

In preparation for the eventual development of their holdings, the Murray heirs in 1847 drew up restrictive covenants that

Thomas Benton Murdock

Thomas Benton Murdock

Co. B, 9th KS. Cavalry
El Dorado Republican, Monday, Nov. 8, 1909, Pg. 2
Vol. XVII, No. 111

THOMAS BENTON MURDOCK
______

In 1841 Thomas Benton Murdock was born in the mountains of Virginia. He was one of five children, who lived to maturity, of Thomas Murdock and Katherine Pierrepont. From the mother’s side came the pride of the Pierreponts; from the father’s the insurgent instincts of the Irish Murdocks who left Ireland after the Irish rebellion failed in 1798. So, even though reared in the mountains among most simple people and most primitive surroundings, the Murdocks who have dominated Kansas for half a century have been proud soldiers of the militant democracy. They have been fighters who led naturally, by instinct and training but never fighters for the old order. They always were pioneers, always moving out into new territory of thought and action, looking forward. Thomas and Katherine Murdock could not endure the iniquity of slavery so in 1849 they freed their slaves and left the slave country for Ohio. They settled near Ironton but lost everything they had in the panic of 1855, and loaded their household goods on a boat, went down the Ohio to the Mississippi and journeyed as far west as Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. There the family spent the winter and the father went to Kansas and found a location. He brought his family to Topeka in the winter of ’56-’57. They rented a little hotel and kept tavern, among others having for guests, Jim Lane and A. D. Stevens, famous as a border fighter under Montgomery and afterwards killed at Harper’s Ferry under old John Brown. Going and coming in the little Kansas tavern of the Virginia abolitionist were the men who made Kansas free and famous in the great conflict that began at Lawrence and ended at Appomattox.
In this atmosphere of strife and patriotism young Benton Murdock, a youth in his late teens, grew up. In 1860 the family homesteaded at Forrest Hill, near Emporia, and the father and mother lived in Emporia the remainder of their lives; the father died in 1896 and the mother in 1887.
When the civil war broke out Thomas Benton Murdock enlisted with his father and brother, Roland, in the Ninth Kansas Cavalry and served until the end of the war. He served in the Rocky Mountains in ’63 and there met J. H. Betts, now of El Dorado. When they met seven or eight years later in El Dorado John Betts kept eying Murdock and finally said: “Say, aren’t you the chap that relieved me of that army overcoat out west?” Murdock’s company was confiscating government property where ever he found it. Murdock looked at Betts and replied: “Well I guess I am. But I’m here to start a newspaper. What’s the chance?”
“Bully,” returned Mr. Betts, willing to let bygones be bygones, and they have remained friends for forty years.
Returning from the army where he had gone snow blind on the plains—a calamity that hung over him of his later days—young Murdock who had been a hod carrier and general work man as a youth around Topeka, learned the printing trade. He worked in the office of Emporia News then owned by P. B. Plumb and Jacob Stotler who had married Leverah Murdock during the war. His brother Marshall who had worked at the printers trade during the war was running the Burlingame Chronicle at the end of war. Young Benton went back to Ironton, Ohio, married the sweetheart of his boyhood, Francis Crawford, and came to El Dorado, March 4, 1870, and founded the Walnut Valley Times with J. S. Danford. His wife lived only a few years leaving at her death their daughter Mary Alice.
From the first Mr. Murdock became a leader in politics in Kansas. He stood for the Walnut Valley and the Kingdom of Butler. In 1876 he was elected a member of the state senate. He served with such men as E. N. Morrill, Charles Robinson, J. M. Hadley, father of the present governor of Missouri, Benjamin F. Simpson, J. R. Hallowell, D. W. Finney, W. A. Johnston, new chief justice of Kansas, all members of the senate, while in the house were Lyman U. Humphrey, John Gilmore, A. W. Smith, L. B. Kellogg, P. P. Elder. His political career was fostered and guided by Mrs. Antoinette Culbreth-Murdock who for a generation has been wife, friend, comrade, guide and inspiration, who bore him five children of whom Ellina Culbreth only now is living. Mrs. Murdock survives him with his two children. In 1880 he ran for senate again but was unfairly defeated he thought. He sold the Times and moved to Topeka and became connected with the Topeka Daily Commonwealth, then controlled by the Baker family. But El Dorado held his heart and he returned in 1883 and founded the El Dorado Weekly Republican. The Daily followed the Weekly in 1884 and the paper at once took a prominent place in the affairs of Kansas.
Mr. Murdock was, during the late senator’s life time, a friend and ally of P. B. Plumb. He and Plumb were young men together in Emporia, thought alike and had much in common in
