From the Trade Paperback edition. (19) Photo 47 This summer I spent two months at Khaneyeh Khorsheed, a drop-in center (DIC) that aims to reduce harm to female drug addicts. Khaneyeh Khorsheed is under the supervision of the State Welfare Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran and was established in 2006. The center offers medical care, counseling, clothing, warm meals, etc. and all the services are offered free of charge. This is a unique center in Tehran for a wide range of people including drug addicts and other high risk populations. I decided to begin my research at this center because it is the only drug addiction center in Tehran solely for women. My goal was to determine whether or not there was discrimination towards certain segments of the population in regards to access to HIV prevention. The project was broken up into three main parts. The first part focused on the distribution and equity in the Iranian health system. The second part examined civic attitudes toward gender access, HIV/AIDS, and drug use. The third part, which was undertaken by other researchers who came to Iran from abroad, explored access and equality with regards to the legal system. One of my roles was working with student researchers from Iran to facilitate communication with patients. With this goal in mind, we designed a series of questionnaires to tackle various views of patients, health workers and the public at large. The first dealt with access to health and looked at how patients view their experiences and perceive levels of care for HIV prevention. We completed fifty questionnaires from the women in Khaneyeh Khorsheed, and then moved our research on to other clinics that included males. This segment of the research is still being completed at multiple clinics in Tehran. In addition, we also asked health workers key questions to see how they viewed HIV prevention amenities for the people they served. We collected about seven questionnaires from Khaneyeh Khorsheed and as new clinics are added to the research this segment will also increase. Lastly, to examine civic attitudes, we went to several coffee shops to get a broad section of the populace and to see how their views reflected general attitudes towards HIV, gender bias and drug use. We were keen to see whether this varied significantly by any key demographics. The analysis is still underway, but I have definitely learned a lot about the plight of women in Iran with regards to HIV. A patient outside of the clinic talking to the volunteer physician and my mentor, Dr. Alaei, holding her 5 month baby. determined and what is dani so determined to accomplish? to stay healthy and not get this ugly bug that has wrecked me for just over a week now? to continue to have the patience of a saint? hmmmm- so here we are... just a little late on the post here- did i mention the really bad bug going around??? i really like this project, but it has been one tough week for me... NAME FOR BABY - NAME FOR
NAME FOR BABY - PICTURE OF A BABY BOY - BABY QUIZZES BOY OR GIRL. Name For Baby
For Olena, from Olena! :) Last November, I was trying to show a Flickr friend how to hunt for Chinese mantises. They're practically camouflage masters, so it's not always easy to find them. It was very late in the season, but I did find one last mantis. It was due to drop below freezing that night, and although that's the usual way Chinese mantises die here, and it's perfectly natural, I decided to manti-nap her anyway because she was Last Mantis Standing. I brought her home and put her in a 5g terrarium; I knew she wouldn't live long, but at least she'd die of simple old age, not freezing. Olena died on Christmas day, and although I was sad, she did spend her last month-plus in a place where she was never cold, never in danger from predators, and always had all the fat crickets, mealworms and waxworms that she wanted, handed right to her because she had one damaged raptorial arm and wasn't so good at catching prey anymore. This is obviously not Olena. I'd got Olena so late in the season that she'd probably already produced at least four or five oothecae, but that wasn't all she had left to give. In her terrarium, she produced one more, which I moved to a cold spot for winter (I'll watch it for hatching this spring, then release the kids, if any). I missed the second, smaller ootheca, though, and since it wasn't cold and the "days" inside a terrarium are long, it hatched! It was a very small case--just a little blob of "leftovers", really, and since it hatched in January, and I wasn't ready for it, I had real trouble trying to keep the babies fed suitably-sized foods, and in the end, their own cannibalistic tendencies meant I was left with only one..this one. This is 5ive (pronounced like the number, but spelt like the silly 90s boy band because I'm a lunatic), and if I'm counting segments correctly, she's a little girl. The reason for the strange name is that during the moult before the last, she dropped one of her legs, giving her a total of only five (two raptorial legs, three walking legs). She didn't mind a bit, and when she moulted last night--this should be the last one before adult--she had a brand new sixth leg. It's shorter than the rest, but it works just fine, and since 5ive is far out of season, she'll always live with me, and I'll always make sure she has enough to eat. The sixth legs should be at least nearly as long as the rest when she moults to fully winged adult form, but if it's not she certainly won't starve. My apologies for the poor photo, but since 5ive does not have an ideal diet (I can't provide as much variation in prey insects as I'd like because winter selection is limited), and is the only survivor of Olena's "last stand", I don't want to stress her and haven't handled her much at all. Subsequently, she's a bit nervous about being taken out of her familiar enclosure and not at all inclined to hold still. Anyway, Olena, this is a present for you, from your mantid-namesake, and I hope you like her! :) Gifts for baby Mattie Little flannel polka dot pants Hand embroidered onesie Reversible baby shoes (a sore attempt to be like Anniemakeseverything) Big baby blanket I forgot to take a picture of the back of the pants, I hand embroidered a piece of pink ribbon with her name "Mattie" and stitched it to the back waste band. I'm 22,in my second year of motherhood, on my son's second Halloween. I wanted to do a 2 theme, but it's Halloween and I had to do a pic with my son in his costume, maybe for my 222 picture. This was his first time trick-or-treating, even though we didn't do much. I wanted to take him last year, but some other people just don't care what I want to do (but that's life I guess). Next year, hopefully, I will pick out his costume & decide when, where, and how long he will be trick-or-treating and what not. We had a nice time when we were out and yes he looked cute in his costume. It was a better day while we were out than most days that we stay inside all day, which is HELL!! but this morning sucked, because people told me to get up way too early than I had too. And tonight after we got home was just terrible (nothing on my son's part of course). But it was so terrible to me that I started looking at temporary shelters. Not sure if I ever will do that, but I may be pushed passed the edge soon in the near future. Caution: Rant: I just wish people would take out their anger on the people they are actually mad at. It makes no sense to me why someone would want you to stay at their house so bad, complain about how much they miss you while you are gone, want you to come back even though it'd be best for you and your family to stay somewhere else, get all upset when you want to get a place of your own, but then that someone rarely comes to see you and when one does he just wines and complains about you and yells at your kid and the pets and leaves. I'm sorry, but toddlers play with toys and they play with them all over the house. It's kind of pointless to clean up after him all day. The only time you can really pick up toys is when it's bed time. So, therefore, the house is only going to be "clean" in the morning and in the night. Okay, if I was living somewhere else, I totally would not care to have every toy picked up before people come over, who ever comes over would know a kid that lives there, seriously.....ugh!! Halloween is also a great song by the Misfits. 365.56 - Make Your Own Fairytale Come True Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 I work up this morning with a smile on my face. Why? Because I had to...It's FRIDAY BABY! The end of the week! The last hurrah to work...for 2 days! The day after payday...this week at least! So in celebration I added a big purple flower to my hair to keep the spirits high, heard Tom Petty, my good luck charm, on the radio during my drive to work, and even got complimented on my hair by the one person I would want to notice and compliment on it...hee hee. I even left after only 10 hours of work so I call this Friday a success all around! Hear! Hear! to an even better weekend! NATURAL BABY MATTRESS - BABY MATTRESS
Natural Baby Mattress - Baby Food Jar Lid - Baby Planet Max Pro. Natural Baby Mattress
Kaitlin and SaraH 2007 Ann Landers' famous "The Childless Couple" There is nothing sadder than a childless couple. It breaks my heart to see them relaxing around swimming pools in Florida, sitting all suntanned and miserable on the decks of their boats — trotting off to Europe like lonesome fools. It's an empty life. Nothing but money to spend, more time to enjoy and a whole lot less to worry about. The poor childless couple are so wrapped up in themselves, you have to feel sorry for them. They don't fight over the child's discipline, don't blame each other for the child's most obnoxious characteristics, and they miss all the fun of doing without for the child's sake. They just go along, doing whatever they want, buying what they want and liking each other. It's a pretty pathetic picture. Everyone should have children. No one should be allowed to escape the wonderful experience that accompanies each stage in the development of the young — the happy memories of sleepless nights, coughing spells, tantrums, diaper rash, debts, "dipso" baby sitters, saturated mattresses, emergencies and never-ending crises. How dismal is the peaceful home without the constant childish problems that make a well-rounded life and an early breakdown; the tender, thoughtful discussions when the report card reveals the progeny to be one step below a moron; the end-of-the-day reunions with all the joyful happenings recited like well-placed blows to the temples. Children are worth it. Every moment of anxiety, every sacrifice, every complete collapse pays off as a fine, sturdy adolescent is reached. The feeling of reward the first time you took the boy hunting — he didn't mean to shoot you, the lad was excited. Remember how he cried? How sorry he was? And how much better you felt after the blood transfusion? These are the times a man with a growing son treasures — memories that are captured forever in the heart and the limp. Think back to the night of romantic adventure when your budding daughter eloped with the village idiot. What childless couple ever shared in the stark realism of that drama? Aren't you a better man for having lived richly, fully, acquiring that tic in your left eye? Could a woman without children touch the strength and heroism of your wife as she tried to fling herself out of the bedroom window? The childless couple live in a vacuum. They fill their lonely days with golf, vacation trips, dinner dates, civic affairs, tranquility, leisure and entertainment. There is a terrifying emptiness without children, but the childless couple are too comfortable to know it. You just have to look at them to see what the years have done: He looks boyish, unlined and rested; she's slim, well-groomed and youthful. It isn't natural. If they had had kids, they'd look like the rest of us — worn out, wrinkled and exhausted..... Organic Mattress Inside Layer Wash I decided to make an organic mattress for my little ones moses basket before he/she arrives. All the natural ones I have found have been far far to expensive to justify buying - so made one myself :D Washing the 2 cotton batting and fleece inner layers with natural soap and tea tree oil before shrinking in the tumble dryer. People must have thought I was a lunatic. You can judge me after you hear the story. The number six bus that picked me up on 55th street was one of those caterpillar two-section busses with weird raised seats on either side of the midsection. I was on one of these seats and so commanded a good view of the happenings on the bus: a very handsome couple sitting across from me talking softly to each other, the girl with blue eyes, delicate features, and animated expressions; the guy with a stylishly unkempt stubble of a beard and a quiet manner with his arm around her. A mother with a young girl, maybe 7 or 8 and another in a stroller. A french guy sitting two seats away from me, laughing on his cell phone. At 49th street, half a dozen or more teenagers got on the bus, and they proceeded to immediately crowd the front section with loudness and bantering in a way that only teenagers still unbroken in social etiquette can do. Their complete disregard for other passengers on the bus drew many a frown and a glare, but none as priceless as the look the little baby girl in the stroller gave them. She was apparently happily tearing apart and consuming the loaf of bread her mother was handing her, finishing the food at surprisingly fast speeds and reaching with outstretched hands and irresistible gurgling noises that only babies can make (which were probably evolved for the specific purpose of attracting our attention) for more. She was busy dismembering a piece of bread when the teenagers boarded and started making a racket. After trying to ignore them for a while, she finally gave up and diverted her attention away from her mother and food and fixed her gaze onto the group. The look on this two-year-old girl's face was absolutely priceless. She was one of the cutest babies I've seen in a while and her expression was one of exasperation tinged with annoyance, as if a schoolteacher admonishing noisy students, "You should know better than to make a ruckus in class." The group of ruffians of course, never noticed, so involved in their own merry-making, but they were given the attention of the baby girl periodically between bouts of feeding and general disapprovement at not being able to enjoy her snack in peace and quiet. I could not stop laughing. One of these days, I'm going to have the guts to go up to the girl and take a picture, so that I have something to back up my claims of cuteness. I got off at the first stop after the bus exited Lake Shore Drive, and in passing the stroller, made a funny face at the baby, hopefully distracting her for a moment from the disagreeable group. Up This picture is taken at a second hand store in my hometown. I love this vintage baby stroller. Wonder if anyone dares use it today? Tansy is the dog who came out of the woods last year and decided she lived here. Here she is asking our daughter why she is throwing a tantrum (because Daddy took something away a plastic bag) Hey kid - is all that noise coming from in you? Tansy showed up last year wandering our road - our other dogs brought her to us. She had a cut that went from her toes up the back of one leg. We treated it and wrapped it up and she made herself immediately at home. We think she was dumped here because for weeks she kept asking if we were going to go for a ride in the car and was disappointed we told her to stay home. Her leg healed and she has become one of the family. What secured her place initially was how well she reacted to our young daughter -- perhaps her previous owner had kids as well? "I never go out unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. If you want to see the girl next door, go next door." - Joan Crawford The Joan Crawford Collection brings together a potent group of films from Crawford's career renaissance: her Warner Bros. run of the late 1940s, beginning with Mildred Pierce. Four of the titles are from that heated, noirish streak, including Crawford's 1945 Oscar-winning turn in Mildred, a great Hollywood example of an actress's persona meeting the zeitgeist moment. In this adaptation of the James M. Cain novel, Crawford plays a sacrificing mother perfectly willing to claw her way to success for the sake of her ingrate daughter. Michael Curtiz directed, snapping Crawford out of a long career slide. Humoresque (1946) was promptly given the top-drawer treatment, and it's a truly epic melodrama about a restless society woman who takes up the cause of a young violinist (John Garfield) from the slums. Possessed (1947) gave Crawford a thorough workout as a woman in complete obsessive breakdown from various romantic traumas. What Crawford lacks in subtlety she makes up for in sheer will, which suits the character well (and brought another best actress Oscar nomination). The Damned Don't Cry (1950) is a film noir smash-up, with Crawford as a low-rent dame who brazens her way into becoming a fur-lined mobster's moll (it was loosely inspired by the Bugsy Siegel-Virginia Hill story). It's overripe but entertaining. 1939's The Women, an MGM picture, doesn't fit the mood of the collection, although it has its fans. George Cukor directed this catty version of the Clare Booth Luce play, which has an all-female ensemble cast; Crawford is in very good form as a bad girl. The movie's reputation is somewhat beyond its actual witchy charm. (Packaging gaffe: the photo on the back cover is from Seven Women.) DVD extras tend toward smallish documentaries, save the absorbing 90-minute career profile The Ultimate Movie Star on the Mildred Pierce disc, an even-handed study that includes frank revelations from director-lover Vincent Sherman and the "wire hangers" story from adopted daughter Christina. Sherman contributes a commentary on The Damned Don't Cry. --Robert Horton Similar posts: Key 0 Key 1 Key 2 Key 3 Key 4 Key 5 Key 6 Key 7 Key 8 |

I have been thinking a lot recently about sexuality. Specifically on what defines me. The usual comments given to me by my friends tend to follow along the lines of ’Just be yourself ... ‘ and this sometimes do not actually tell me what I need to know. There are times I feel I know myself, my wants and needs. But more importantly, there are times I need to figure out how I perceive myself. For starters, I think I am a woman. I mean, I think I look like one and hope I feel like one too. The absence of women role models in my life does not help me solve the conundrum of trying to figure out whether I am the normal approximation of being a woman. For example, I am surrounded by women all the time. None of which fits with the idea of what a woman is ‘all about’ in my head. My Ex still thinks of me as a guy. She even refers to me, in more instances than usual, as one. This is even when she has known me longer as a woman than as a man. This is something I am actually powerless to alter as when I first met her, that was the guise I adopted. She has often landed me in heaps of explanations when faced with mutual friends where when commented on my looks, she simply says ‘You know what? She used to be a guy.’ I often get into arguments with her over this. So much so that I now rarely meet any of her friends. Then there is that argument that goes along the lines of childbearing. You know the one that basically says that you’re not a woman unless you have the ability to reproduce and/or have gone through the pain of childbirth. I usually counter the former by saying that it takes two to reproduce. As for the latter, I usually posit my contention that if my weeks of screaming in pain of all the surgeries endured does not count as ‘pain’ in their eyes, then I would concede the argument. There is a painting by my mum which hangs in my room back in Kuala Lumpur. I think she painted it before I was even born and I have since gone to sleep under in until the day I left for England. It’s a painting of a young nun cradling a baby. A contradiction in itself, considering my Roman-Catholic upbringing. That painting for some reason epitomises my idea of womanhood. The attributes of the nun coupled with the instinct possessed towards the baby. Somehow, the actual manifestation of that painting is something I have yet to encounter in reality. The lack of role models has sometimes forced me to mimic attributes displayed by the womenfolk around me. Upon seeing the way my colleagues and peers walk and talk, I sometimes try to follow suit. In other words, I can sometimes follow trends or even feign interest in the topics of the day. In truth, I have no idea. I had thought that my exposure to the working world would give me some pointers. Having worked in ‘closed’ environments for so long, I was bemused to find that even in my current, very public job, I still cannot tell the difference between the men and womenfolk in my workplace. They just seem so similar. Well, apart from the physicalities displayed and the occasional pregnancies. Other than that, the women behave and interact almost exactly as the men. The funny thing is, I know firsthand the difference the hormones give. I have experienced the power and aggression of testosterone and the euphoric feeling of the senses give by oestrogens. Somehow, I don’t see the distinction just as easily around me. Then of course, there is the more apparent distinction manifested by the general public. From the wannabe IT-Girls to the TrolleyGrans. Physicalities aside, I suspect that they are all identical in terms of their psychological make-up. After all, I think, just like HLA Hart’s empirical Martian in his Positivistic treatise, these women merely represent the development of womanhood, rather than its different individual representation. In truth, I will probably never find out. All I know is that I cry at sad movies, lament at lost loves, dance along with old songs and weep with my inability to buy as many shoes and handbags my heart so desires. Then, there is the question of sexuality. It’s no secret that I prefer women. I have done so since the day I was born. I do however sometimes wish for the security of a dashing prince. I know for sure, that if afforded the opportunity for physical intimacy, I will surely back down. Issues of body image aside, I know that I love the sensualness that felinity affords rather than the sheer brutality of masculinity. I may harp on about fancying Mr Selleck, Mr Reeve and Mr Peck, but I will never even contemplate the idea of sleeping with their real-life approximations. I short, I many love the idea of sex, but I will never allow it to happen me. Actually, I know this to be common as questions of sexual preference are quite distinct from the question of gender. I suppose I will never find the answer I seek. I may never answer the question as to what I am. All I can probably still do is to go For the July 1 Babies The other day, someone gave me this thing about my birthday, and while I'm always into these kind of things, it's more for fun than anything else so I don't really take it seriously. However, this one comes so close to the person that I am, that it gave me a chill. While I obviously don't think it's a birthday alone that defines a person, this was very, very interesting to me, being that the resemblance was so remarkably uncanny. July 1st: The Day of Emancipation July 1 people tend to be highly sensitive, capable and adaptable, as well as emotionally open. Though many born on this day are also long-suffering, and very prone to emotional pain, they generally win out in their struggle against dominance, injustice or oppression of any type. July 1 women feel keenly the conflict between the workplace and motherhood or the demands of a career vs. keeping a home; therefore, they are often taken up with issues surrounding gender in modern society. July 1 men have an unusual sensitivity and empathy for women, and for their own feminine side. July 1 people of both sexes are often their own worst enemy in that depression can be a constant and unwelcome companion in their lives. Worries regarding inferiority at work or failure at home can dog them even when they are most successful. Those born on this day are likely to display ambivalent feelings toward individuals and social groups with whom they are most closely bound, and ultimately, toward themselves. On the positive side, July 1 people are hardly ones to follow blindly. No matter how commited they are to an endeavor, cause, or ideology, they remain flexible enough to see another point of view or way of doing things. July 1 people seek profundity and are quickly put off by simplistic answers and shallow thought. July 1 people are indeed deep themselves-- complex personalities who keep a whole world of strictly personal feelings inside them. On the other hand, they have a highly social side which generally manifests in acts of service and unselfish contributions to society. July 1 people tend to be givers rather than takers. Because of their receptive and empathic tendencies, they are often sought out as understanding and helpful friends. Yet, when they are in one of their tormentented states they are of little constructive use for anyone. Those born on this day have their own particular brand of emotional self-torture. It seems that they must bring up very disturbing feelings and work them out before they can advance in their personal development. The daner is that they will get locked into negative patterns. Often a chance happening or even a shock is needed to reorient them, followed by a sudden realization of their behavior and subsequent resolve to improve their situation. Here a more highly evolved July 1 emerges as an aggressive and positive personality willing and ready to function in the world, and capable of integrating a successful social, family and love life. Sometimes those born on this day become remarkably extroverted once they come out of their shell, and actively seek out life's pleasures. Such revels are a kind of lifelong celebration of emancipation. Numbers and Planets Those born on the 1st of the month are ruled by the number 1 and by the Sun. People born on the 1st like to be first. Those ruled by the number 1 are typically individual, highly opinionated, and eager to rise to the top. Because July 1 people are a bit passive in expressing themselves, they will gain a positive boost from a Sun-Moon connection. The Sun sympolizes strong creative energy and fire, which is best kept flowing steadily rather than allowed to sporadically flare out of control. Tarot The 1st card of the Major Arcana is The Magician, who symbolizes intellect, communication, information, as well as magic. Over his head is an infinity symbol, which in some Tarot decks takes the form of a hat, in others a halo. Many interpretations mayb be drawn, one of which is that the Magician recognizes the cyclical and unending nature of life and is empowered by this understanding. The positive traits suggested by this first card include diplomatic skill and shrewdness but, negatively, lack of scruples and opportunism. The choice rests with the July 1 person whether to embrace superficiality and illusion, or pursue more profound goals. Health July 1 people are not overly comfortable with their bodies. Though they are graceful, and may enjoy many forms of movement, they periodically swing from acive sexual expression to total abstinence. Depression is probably the greatest single health danger to July 1 people and at some point in their lives they may find it helpful to seek some form of counseling. Those born on this day need a friend, religious counselor or therapist to whom, if only occasionally, they can pour out their heart. The eating habits of July 1 people are often unusual or even peculiar. By alternately indulging and denying when can you find out the gender of a baby KARLOFF & LUGOSI HORROR CLASSICS - DVD Movie Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi are the magic names when it comes to a bygone era of horror, and quite a bit of that magic is still afoot in Karloff & Lugosi Horror Classics, a two-disc, four-film set that gathers some of their lower-profile appearances. Karloff reigns supreme on the first disc, delivering a soulful performance in 1936's The Walking Dead, one of his life-after-execution pictures. Here Edmund Gwenn is the professor applying his reanimation technique to the unjustly electrocuted Karloff; revenge killings ensue--or is it karma? Michael Curtiz's energetic direction reminds you that he rarely phoned it in. Karloff takes on the Frankenstein family name (not the Monster garb) in Frankenstein 1970 (1958), which allows him quite a long leash and more than a few doomy speeches. It gets off to a great start and has a promising "meta" setup (a movie crew is at the Frankenstein castle in order to get authentic atmosphere for their horror picture), but it falls off pretty badly. The second disc boasts You'll Find Out, a 1940 curiosity that not only brings Karloff and Lugosi together, but throws in Peter Lorre for an extra treat. With all that, who cares if the movie is really a vehicle for the popular radio personality Kay Kyser (and his "Kollege of Musical Knowledge")? Kyser's zany style, complete with sidekicks such as the ineffable Ish Kabibble, actually translates fairly well to the screen, and the movie cheerfully follows the blueprint of a screwball-paced haunted-house comedy. Even disappointed horror mavens will warm to the sight of Karloff, Lugosi, and Lorre huddled together, plotting no good. Zombies on Broadway is a 1945 B-picture that probably ought to be unwatchable, but in fact it's quite competent (director Gordon Douglas was a versatile pro) and often fun. The headliners are Wally Brown and Alan Carney, whose sub-Abbott and Costello repartee is generally painful, although one grave-digging joke pays off nicely. Lugosi has a meaty role as a Caribbean hoodoo doctor who creates zombies in his jungle laboratory (shades of his White Zombie character). The film was made at RKO, home to Val Lewton's legendary horror unit, and is actually something of a send-up of Lewton's I Walked with a Zombie--complete with two of IWWAZ's notable cast members, the looming revenant Darby Jones and honey-voiced calypso singer Sir Lancelot. For fans of the terror titans, a respectable set, even if the chills are scarce. --Robert Horton Similar posts: Key 0 Key 1 Key 2 Key 3 Key 4 Key 5 Key 6 |
