29 Winter outing (Part 2)

29 Winter outing (Part 2)

If I was cheery before, the scene that played out on the number six bus ten minutes into the trip turned me into a smiling idiot with facial features permanently fixed and giggles bubbling up every few seconds. People must have thought I was a lunatic. You can judge me after you hear the story. The number six bus that picked me up on 55th street was one of those caterpillar two-section busses with weird raised seats on either side of the midsection. I was on one of these seats and so commanded a good view of the happenings on the bus: a very handsome couple sitting across from me talking softly to each other, the girl with blue eyes, delicate features, and animated expressions; the guy with a stylishly unkempt stubble of a beard and a quiet manner with his arm around her. A mother with a young girl, maybe 7 or 8 and another in a stroller. A french guy sitting two seats away from me, laughing on his cell phone. At 49th street, half a dozen or more teenagers got on the bus, and they proceeded to immediately crowd the front section with loudness and bantering in a way that only teenagers still unbroken in social etiquette can do. Their complete disregard for other passengers on the bus drew many a frown and a glare, but none as priceless as the look the little baby girl in the stroller gave them. She was apparently happily tearing apart and consuming the loaf of bread her mother was handing her, finishing the food at surprisingly fast speeds and reaching with outstretched hands and irresistible gurgling noises that only babies can make (which were probably evolved for the specific purpose of attracting our attention) for more. She was busy dismembering a piece of bread when the teenagers boarded and started making a racket. After trying to ignore them for a while, she finally gave up and diverted her attention away from her mother and food and fixed her gaze onto the group. The look on this two-year-old girl's face was absolutely priceless. She was one of the cutest babies I've seen in a while and her expression was one of exasperation tinged with annoyance, as if a schoolteacher admonishing noisy students, "You should know better than to make a ruckus in class." The group of ruffians of course, never noticed, so involved in their own merry-making, but they were given the attention of the baby girl periodically between bouts of feeding and general disapprovement at not being able to enjoy her snack in peace and quiet. I could not stop laughing. One of these days, I'm going to have the guts to go up to the girl and take a picture, so that I have something to back up my claims of cuteness. I got off at the first stop after the bus exited Lake Shore Drive, and in passing the stroller, made a funny face at the baby, hopefully distracting her for a moment from the disagreeable group.

This picture is taken at a second hand store in my hometown. I love this vintage baby stroller.

Wonder if anyone dares use it today?
