THE COLONEL'S GARDEN

SANFORD NC: LEE COUNTY: THE HOUSE IN THE HORSESHOE: On the morning of July 29, 1781, this plantation, owned by Philip Alston, a Whig [anti-Crown] colonel in the NC revolutionary forces, was under attack by a larger unit of Tories [those faithful to the king of England] led by the notorious David Fanning.

During the war, the Whigs and Tories waged irregular warfare against each other in North Carolina's backcountry (a.k.a., the western frontier).

During the ensuing skirmish, Fanning's forces attempted to light the house on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw. After several casualties on both sides, Alston surrendered. The house was left riddled with bullet holes, many of which can still be seen today.

Though Philip Alston was distinguished as a lieutenant colonel in the state militia, a justice of the peace, and a state senator, his later career was seen as disreputable. Twice indicted for murder, he was removed as justice of the peace, and suspended from the state legislature for various reasons. In 1790, he sold the house and plantation and left the state.

Ironically, Fanning's career ended up in a cloudy smoke of disrepute, as well. He escaped capture by the Whigs and traveled to Canada where he reinvented himself quite successfully. There he became a shipbuilder but got absorbed by new problems and faced legal charges involving rape. He escaped the prosecution and died later at the age of 70.

NOTE: The House in the Horseshoe got its name because the plot of land on which the main house sat was set apart by the winding Deep River in such a manner it resembled a horseshoe.

My Desk

A close-up of the clutter-collecting old mahogany bureau in my sitting room. When I'm working, I sit outside in the relatively modern 'shed' behind my house, where the surfaces are comparitively clean and the walls collect the clutter. The shed still smells of cigar ash from when Dad used it for his own business- I can't get the smell out of the carpet, and I don't really want to. It reminds me of him.

This bureau belonged to my great-grandmother, and she would write letters at it when it sat in 2, Fitzwilliam Square, a house now owned by Anthony O'Reilly. Dad used it for his invoicing, which he'd do in big red books, despite having the Big Red Book software accounting package on his computer at work.

Its cubbies and drawers are full of the useless detritus that, for some reason, you fear discarding. Posting a photo of your own desk is a bit of a wank, really, but I do love this desk, even though I only use it as a crash-pad for junk at the moment. It's got a lot of my family history attached to it.

Yes, the weather yesterday was so awful, with more rain and gales, that I ended up taking a picture of our vacuum cleaner! This earned me the very obvious rebuke from Her In Charge along the lines of "You're supposed to be using it to vacuum up the biscuit crumbs you dropped on the carpet, not photographing the darned thing!"

Someday I may get the walls primed and painted. Because of the color of the carpet I'm thinking a pale quaker or dove gray for the walls. I would love a pine frost but I'm not sure it would work.

Croxteth Hall Liverpool.

The original house was built in about 1575, and has been expanded in several stages in Tudor, Georgian, and Queen Anne styles. The principal front, the west facade, was built in 1702.

Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children stayed at Croxteth Hall on 9 October 1851 before visiting Liverpool the following day during torrential rain. However, the visit started fine with 700 members of the local gentry being entertained in the Hall grounds.

The Hall and its outbuilding are a Grade II* Listed Building, as are 3 of the outbuildings; another 15 buildings on the estate are Grade II. The Molyneux family lived at the Hall from the 16th century until 1972, when the last Earl died. His American-born widow Josephine, Countess of Sefton (1903–1980) - once a close friend of the Duchess of Windsor and nicknamed "Foxy" for her abundant auburn hair - continued to spend some time at Croxteth. She became the last member of the Molyneux family to reside in the hall.

When the last Earl died in 1972, a worldwide search was made for an heir to the title but without success.

Much of the original estate has since been sold off for development, but approximately 500 acres (2 km?) remain as a country park, which is open to the public and includes various play facilities for children. The estate also contains the historic Hall itself, open to the public for a small fee, as well as a maintained Victorian walled garden and a working country farm.

I was walking down Paradise Street and saw all these people gathered around a marquis. When I got closer I saw that it was a Formula One car. I assumed it must be a replica but when I asked one of the Braun staff he told me it was the team’s actual test car. Given the remarkable start to their Formula One existence this car is quite an important object. This is the vehicle that the team used to hone its design and create the car currently dominating the 2009 Formula One season. It was great to have a chance to get so close to it for a photograph.

An interesting bath tub. It was not uncomfortable but didnt work well for keeping one's upper torso warm, as it was out of the water, so I used the hand held shower. I pulled the plug and dried off in the tub. When I pulled the curtain back and stepped out, all the water had gone down the tub drain - but came up in the bathroom floor drain! So I couldn't use the hairdryer in the bathroom for fear of being electrocuted so I had to stand outside the bathroom door on the carpet and pull the dryer cord out to its full length to dry my hair. Certainly I was wide awake by the time I went down to breakfast from all the excitement.

He has also climbed in Alaska, the Himalaya, and the Karakoram. In 1984, he led the first successful American summit of the North Col of Mount Everest.

About Frances Davis Whittemore (1857 – 1951)

A painter, writer, lecturer, and teacher, Whittemore was the head of the Washburn University art program starting in the 1893-94 academic year. She was a pupil of J. Alden Weir, Kenyon Cox, Walter Shirlaw, and studied at the Art Students’ League of New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Washington DC. Her husband L.D. Whittemore (Luther) was registrar and head of the education department at WU, 1920 – 1937. He was also the principal of Topeka High School, superintendent of the Topeka schools system, assistant state superintendent of public instruction, and secretary to Kansas Board of Education. He earned his doctorate in 1905 from Washburn University and went back to the University in 1920. L.D. died in 1944.

L.D. married Francis Dean Davis in 1891. She was the daughter of John Davis, one-time Populist congressman. Frances was born in Decatur, Illinois, and came to Kansas with her parents, to Junction City. After her education, she was the art supervisor in Evanston, Illinois schools. From 1912 to 1928 she was the Director of the art department at Washburn University. She was the force behind the building of the Mulvane Art Museum, with a gift from Joab Mulvane in 1923, although she insisted she deserved no credit for her efforts. She began building the Mulvane’s art collection, art program, and pioneered classes in art history and art appreciation.
“Perhaps the person who spurred the town on to art most tirelessly, one might say relentlessly, was a tiny New England lady, Frances Whittemore, who became art instructor at Washburn in 1893. She had her students bringing such diverse things as clippings to start an art library and balls of carpet rags to weave rugs for the rooms.
“Her dream was an art museum, and with her energy and Joab Mulvane’s $50,000, it materialized in 1924 into the Mulvane building. Fiercely she supervised every inch of the plans, making Topeka aware that Washburn had an art department.”
Her daughter was Margaret Whittemore.

Member: Nautilus Club, College Art Association, Charter member of Delta Chi Delta, an honorary art fraternity; organizer of Topeka Art Guild in 1916. They had their office in the Topeka High School Gallery on 10th Street from 1931 through the 1970s.

These are some little ones, learning to ski. We were commenting on how things have changed since we taught our boys. We used to take them to the top of the hill, on a T-bar, in front of us and try not to fall. Our thighs would be screaming in pain by the time we got to the top, from the extra weight of the kids and trying to keep the T-bar under our bums. These little ones would ski down a slight incline and then make their way to this "moving carpet" and it would take them back to the top. One poor little guy fell side ways and couldn't get up and just laid there, all bundled up, skis on, until the carpet dumped him at the top. I should have got a shot of that but the camera was in the inside pocket of my ski jacket....

The arch is to the upper left. You can also see how the arch is right above a shear drop off. This is why no one photographs the sunrise on this arch from the eastern side. You need a flying carpet to do that.

Image shows interior view of "The Great Fireplace" in the lounge at La Venta Inn, located at 796 Via del Monte on lots 4, 5, and 6, block 1536. Visible is a large fireplace with stonework hearth, above which is a framed landscape painting and plaster mantle carved with a wreath enclosing a coat of arms. An armchair and wicker loveseat are visible at right, facing a sofa with floral arrangement in foreground. A long rug in center of room covers hardwood floors. Light comes through the french doors with floral drapes at right, and a wrought-iron chandelier is hanging from the ceiling. The Inn, originally built as a club house (named "Clubhouse 764") to entertain realtors and prospective land owners, opened in the summer of 1923 and was the first permanent building constructed by the Palos Verdes Project. The name was soon changed to La Venta (meaning "The Sale" in Spanish) and the inn served as a sales office and architectural prototype for the peninsula. During the 1930s it became a weekend retreat for notable celebrities such as Charles Lindbergh, Erroll Flynn, Betty Grable, Bob Hope, Tyrone Power, Cary Grant, and Gloria Swanson. Briefly in 1942 the Inn became the central observation post of the coastal artillery. From 1944 to 1954 the property was the residence of Commander and Mrs. Stanley Schnetzler, and was re-established as an inn in 1955. On November 11, 1978, La Venta Inn became the first structure designated as an historical landmark by the Rancho de los Palos Verdes Historical Society. In 1992 the New York Food Company took over management of the property.

Inside the Stained Glass Canopy

Stained Glass Canopy at the Terre Haute Historical Museum. It is from Legendary Madame Brown's Circle R Hotel (house of prostitution). In operation approx. 1918-1942.

This was actually a brothel "decorated with oriental rugs and the finest furniture, china, silver, glass and mirrors, it even boasted a Tiffany glass chandelier. The house had a music room, complete with grand piano, Madam's sitting room, another sitting room, living room, dining room and a barroom, with a bar that had come from Chauncey Rose's Prairie House hotel, which in 1855 had become Terre Haute House. The outside of the house was also striking with a low wrought-iron fence, a Tiffany glass canopy over the front entrance, garden figures and flowers and shrubs laid out in a formal garden."
