Untimely end for a good Ford
Yes, there was such a thing! ... I've know three really good ones ;-)
Perhaps the best Ford bus I ever came across was this ex Highland Omnibuses example, CST 707N which arrived in our yard at Stonier's one day. Immediately the garage staff and I viewed it with scepticism expecting it to be as reliable as the proverbial chocolate fire guard and as popular as a pork chop in a synagogue with the crews. There'd been two other ex Highland Fords in the fleet up 'til then (KST 360/7G) and both were universally disliked. Under duress, preparation for service was carried out and a couple of colleagues and I got stuck in with paint brushes. Mechanical examination revealed it to be in excellent condition, and later our finished paint job set it off well I thought.
When released into traffic, it soon became flavour of the month with those who could drive, infact, even those who struggled with manual boxes seemed to enjoy it. The reason for it's popularity soon became apparent when it made increasingly frequent 'pit stops' for fuel. However, the latter wasn't for it's relatively frugal 360cu in turbo engine, but for a remarkably efficient (at warming!) diesel /paraffin heater it possessed. To be fair, it was an excellent bus to drive with plenty of 'go' and a good gearchange for once but in typical Ford style, it had overly fierce brakes.
Unfortunately, it's stay in service was cut cruelly short when one day leaving a side street in Hanley it's driver, seeing a 'load' on the opposite side of the main thoroughfare, pulled out into the path of one of the competitor's Bristol VRs. After the now customary 'ministry' examination which followed any Stonier's incident, the bus, with which no contributory fault was found, was deemed beyond economical repair.
Going off at a tangent, I'm tempted to speculate that the visible highlighted indentations in the road surface relate to the former 4 foot gauge Potteries tram network which closed in 1928.

I did these in my home made studio, i used dust sheets for a background and heaters in my garage ha. I was meant to have studio lights but i was let down by which time my clients had already arrived so my dad went and got some flood lights from work unfortunately being a dark room it was very poor lighting but i did as best as i could!the red in the images are from the stand up heaters but without them we would have died of being so cold!

Fort Worth at sunset. The Trinity river is in the foreground. I went out there after work. I took my Cider with me for the photo shoot. On the map, this seemed like a good place for a skyline shot. I walked along the trail for a while to get to this spot. Not the best, but that was as far as I wanted to go. Cider was getting restless after a while. I don't think I'll take her again.

Pro-choice Activists Interface With Pro Life Rally ( Rally For Life)
As I had not carried out any research in advance I was a bit surprised by this rally as many (if not the majority) of the people that took part were from Northern Ireland or from the Philippines. On the other hand the counter-demonstrators appeared to be local to Dublin.
As they made their way their way along O'Connell Street they encountered a counter-demonstration chanting "Don't put your rosaries on our ovaries". Some counter-protesters referred to the marchers as bin the "Irish Taliban".
In general the event was good humored but there were some strong heated verbal exchanges that required intervention by the police.
Speaking in advance of a counter-demo planned for Saturday 2nd July,
spokesperson for a group of Dublin-based pro-choice activists, Sinead Kennedy
called upon all pro-choice people to join the demonstration.
Commenting Sinead Kennedy said;
“We have come together as a broad group of pro-choice activists to demonstrate
against the so-called ‘Rally for Life’ at 2pm this Saturday at the Spire on O’Connell
St. We wish to counter the notion that the organisers of the ‘Rally for Life’ represent
the sum total of public opinion in Ireland. The right of a woman to control over her
own body is a right still denied to women in Ireland. It is a hangover of Catholic
guilt and successive governments who have refused to legislate for abortion, a
fundamental reproductive and health right, has left women in a powerless
position – stigmatised and ignored.
“On Saturday the 2nd of July a rally of ‘pro-life’ lobbyists will take to the streets. We
will show that they do not represent the majority view. Consistent opinion polls have
shown that the majority of people in Ireland favour a women’s right to choose in most
circumstances. In reality they are not ‘pro-life’, but anti-choice.
“We are now calling on the Government to legislate for the X case as a matter of
urgency and introduce free, safe and legal abortion on demand. They must also
immediately close the ‘rogue’ crisis pregnancy agencies currently operating in
Ireland and ensure people have access to affordable contraception and other related
sexual services. We are further calling on the Minister for Education to ensure there

A little more "free" time today! Went to play racquetball with my roommate/friend Taylor. (Actually was over 30min late, because I forgot I had scheduled an audition for 5:20, and we were supposed to meet at 5.) Fortunately, nobody came to play in the court at 6, so we got to play for quite a while longer.
Also worth noting from today, the hot water heater went out AGAIN. That's twice, in as many months, but a trip to Lowe's for (another) new thermal coupler and a bit over an hour on the floor wrestling with the parts, it was up and running again! I'm starting to feel like a pro at basic home repair.

My Canon EOS 5D
Here's a mug shot of the new 5D, wearing my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.
This was a very quick shot. I placed the 5D on top of an oil column heater; the window was behind me with late afternoon light entering. I grabbed the monopod and 70-200/2.8L IS, sat on the floor and shot. Very elaborate studio work, eh?

This is the oil column heater I had to have on all day to make my motel room not freezing. Aucklanders like to pretend it doesn't get cold there, but they're fooling themselves.

Michael Faraday - Highgate [West] Cemetery
Michael Faraday FRS (22 September 1791 – 25 August 1867) was an English chemist and physicist (or natural philosopher, in the terminology of the time) who spent most of his working life at the Royal Institution in London, initially as an assistant to Humphry Davy.
Following on from the work of HC Oersted, who had discovered that passing electric current through a wire produced a magnetic field – a compass needle was deflected, Faraday studied the magnetic field then discovering diamagnetism and the laws of electrolysis. His inventions of electromagnetic rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor theory, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology. It was worth travelling from Felixstowe to see his grave.

Another Florida Adventure!
So, I'm in bed this morning - it's around 6:30am (still dark outside) - when the heater kicks on. All of a sudden this racket starts up outside, coming from the heater unit located under my bathroom window, close to my bedroom windows. Thinking that somehow an acorn fell through the top grate and was whipping around on the blades, I waited to see if it would stop, and after a short while it did - ah, a chance to go back to sleep for a little while. Well, NO, the racket started up again, so I got up and turned the furnace off saying to myself I'll wait until it gets light outside and go and check on what the heck was happening. And, so I did. At first light, I got out there and was looking all around trying to see the acorn - acorn, not so fast! As I was looking around through the grate, I looked down, and there was a snake - he got caught in-between the bushy metal stuff on the side of the unit (whatever that stuff is called), and his body was kind of folded in half. I guess when the blades were going around, the wind picked up the body and it kept hitting the blades. I tried to get in-between the top grate with a plastic stick I had in the garage in order to get the body down from hanging on the side, but no such luck. Then I tried an old steak knife, but the handle wasn't long enough to reach the body. IDEA! I got out my handy-dandy ratchet set (actually it's my Dad's old ratchet set) and removed most of the nuts that were holding the top grate to the base (but not all so that I wouldn't dislodge the center piece from the blades and cause yet another problem). I was then able to get my hand under the grate while holding the steak knife and cut the body out - man, that was one very tough snake - no wonder the blades couldn't cut through him. All fixed! I don't know what kind of snake it was, but I bet he's sorry he climbed in there! Of course, I had to run in and get my camera to document the incident! Ah, living the good life in Florida!!!
If anyone knows what kind of snake this is, please let me know.
R.I.P. Guitar Case
Sentimentality is a funny thing...when I first got this guitar case in high school, I hated it..it was brown with an orange-hued craft fur interior. It had the stupidest lock and key (the key broke off the third time I used it). The handle was in a spot that made the whole thing unbalanced, and as you walked with it it was start lurching back and forth, back and forth. It finally gave up its fight after 20 years of varying degrees of service when the water heater burst...the glue holding the sawdust together inside the faux-leather started crumbling, so I tore off the lid and took it to New Haven and left it on a popular sidewalk hoping someone would take a photo of it or hang it in their living room. No such luck...but I like to think one of New Haven's more colorful homeless is using it as a makeshift headboard or something.
