  • The cello (pronounced ; plural cellos or celli) is a bowed string instrument. The word derives from the Italian violoncello. A person who plays a cello is called a cellist. The cello is used as a solo instrument, in chamber music, and as a member of the string section of an orchestra.

ELEANOR RIGBY
Music and lyrics by The Beatles and Lennon-McCartney
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been,
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father Mckenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father Mckenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all belong?

Eleanor Rigby

Eleanor Rigby

The grave of Eleanor Rigby in St . Peter's Churchyard , Woolton , Liverpool . Although Paul McCartney has stated that the words he wrote for the Beatles song were not inspired by the grave it's a strange coincidence that this grave and the one nearby bearing the name McKenzie ( as in Father McKenzie ) are both in the grounds of St . Peters , where Lennon and McCartney spent many of their teenage hours . In fact they met at a gig by John Lennon's band " The Quarrymen " at the St. Peter's fete in 1957 , McCartney later joining the group .

I'm FINALLY in the Christmas parade shots. Woohoo. I don't have many of these though. Not happy with most of them.

The reason I took this shot is 3 fold.

1) He looked really upset about marching
2) I play the trumpet
3) My band director (same school, same band) died my senior year. With the money the band raised with fundraisers, rather than going on a band trip, they bought new uniforms (the ones you see here).

December Diary-"Music" 06 December 2011

December Diary-

Carousel

The original production of Carousel was directed by Rouben Mamoulian and opened at Broadway's Majestic Theatre on April 19, 1945, running for 890 performances and closing on May 24, 1947. From this show came the hit musical numbers "The Carousel Waltz" (an instrumental), "If I Loved You", "June Is Bustin' Out All Over", and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Carousel was also revolutionary for its time — adapted from Ferenc Molnar's play Liliom, it was one of the first musicals to contain a tragic plot; it also contained an extended ballet that was crucial to the plot, and several extended musical scenes containing both sung and spoken material, as well as dance. The 1956 film version of Carousel, made in Cinemascope 55, again starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, the same leads as the film version of Oklahoma!

Carousel is also unique among the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals for not having an overture; both the stage and film versions began with the familiar Carousel Waltz. This music was included in John Mauceri's Philips Records CD of the complete overtures of Rodgers and Hammerstein with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. It was also included in Rodgers' rare 1954 album for Columbia Records with the composer conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ferenc Molnar's Hungarian-language drama, Liliom, premiered in Budapest in 1909. The audience was puzzled by the work, and it lasted only thirty-odd performances before being withdrawn, the first shadow on Molnar's successful career as a playwright. Liliom was not presented again until after World War I. When it reappeared on the Budapest stage, it was a tremendous hit.

Except for the ending, the plots of Liliom and Carousel are very similar. Andreas Zavocky (nicknamed Liliom, the Hungarian word for "lily", a slang term for "tough guy"), a carnival barker, falls in love with Julie Zeller, a servant girl, and they begin living together. With both discharged from their jobs, Liliom is discontented and contemplates leaving Julie, but decides not to do so on learning that she is pregnant. A subplot involves Julie's friend Marie, who has fallen in love with Wolf Biefeld, a soldier—after the two marry, he becomes the owner of the hotel he once worked in.

Desperate to make money so that he, Julie and their child can escape to America and a better life, Liliom conspires with lowlife Ficsur to commit a robbery, but it goes badly, and Liliom stabs himself. He dies, and his spirit is taken to heaven's police court. As Ficsur suggested while the two waited to commit the crime, would-be robbers like them do not come before God himself. Liliom is told by the magistrate that he may go back to Earth for one day to attempt to redeem the wrongs he has done to his family, but must first spend sixteen years in a fiery purgatory.

On his return to Earth, he encounters his daughter, Louise, who like her mother is now a factory worker. Saying that he knew her father, he tries to give her a star he stole from the heavens. When Louise refuses to take it, he strikes her. Not realizing who he is, Julie confronts him, but finds herself unable to be angry with him. Liliom is ushered off to his fate, presumably Hell, and Louise asks her mother if it is possible to feel a hard slap as if it was a kiss. Julie reminiscently tells her daughter that it is very possible for that to happen.

In the summer of my Junior year in High School (summer of 1970), I worked with a summer stock theater that produced the stage version of Carousel. We actually built a working model carousel that held six actors. During the opening scene, three husky football players were ‘employed’ to turn the carousel while the 6 actors took their positions on the carousel horses. Give those football players credit-they pushed the offense back twenty yards, but in the process, lost one performer (while she was on the backstage side) so that when the carousel spun, there was one less rider! She was thrown off her horse! Oh, the fun of summer theater!

I still enjoy hearing the music from this production, probably because I sang in the chorus as well as did some of the backstage production work.

CAPA Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School

CAPA Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School

Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts 6–12 (CAPA) is a magnet school located in the Cultural District of Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. CAPA is one of four 6th to 12th grade schools in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. It is the result of a merger between CAPA High School and Rogers CAPA Middle School.

CAPA offers students six art majors: visual arts, literary arts, theater, instrumental music, vocal music, and dance. The theater major includes traditional theater, musical theater, technical theater, and costume design. Arts classes are taught by adjunct faculty who are working professionals in their respective fields.

Admission is by portfolio or audition. It also offers a complete range of academic studies including Pittsburgh Scholars Program (PSP) and Centers for Advanced Study (CAS), along with activities like the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, yearbook, newspaper, student council, Amnesty International, Model United Nations, the American Mathematics Competitions and North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad, and ski club.

CAPA opened in September 1979 with just 35 students and it was housed in Baxter Elementary School in the Homewood neighborhood. The school moved into its current space at Ninth Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard at the beginning of the 2003–2004 school year.

The 9-story, 175,000-square-foot (16,300 m2) building is a world-class facility that includes a 400-seat auditorium, a black box theater, an art gallery, media arts center, television studio, fitness center, computer labs, and special rehearsal spaces for all the departments. This new location allows students to study their crafts in the hub of Pittsburgh's cultural center and to easily collaborate with working artists from across the city, region, state, and country. Pittsburgh CAPA has just become one of four 6–12 schools in Pittsburgh, collaborating with Rogers CAPA 6–8.

My Second Guitar Recital

My Second Guitar Recital

April 2007 and I look happy. I am playing for a group of 6 close friends on a lovely Sunday afternoon with lovely foods prepared and presented by my buddy Betsy. It's perfect. Jon, my teacher has worked hard with me preparing and I played each piece lovingly, but how did they sound? I don't think the performance came even close to the effort I put in for it.
As I remember this I am thinking clearly about shifting my focus from classical to rock and blues. I want to take more creative charge of my playing even if I can't sing.

Pandit ji's flutes

Pandit ji's flutes

The bansuri (Hindi: ???????) is a transverse alto flute of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, made of a single length of bamboo with six or seven open finger holes. An ancient musical instrument associated with cowherds and the pastoral tradition, it is intimately linked to the love story of Krishna and Radha, and is depicted in Buddhist paintings from around 100 AD. It is intimately associated with Krishna's Rasa lila; the tunes on his flute are poetically associated with driving the women of Braj mad. The North Indian bansuri, typically about 14 inches long, was traditionally used as a soprano instrument primarily for accompaniment in lighter compositions including film music.

The word bansuri originates in the Sanskrit bans [bamboo] + swar [musical note]. There are two varieties of bansuri: the transverse, and the fipple. The fipple variety is usually played in folk music and is held away from the lips like a whistle. Because of the flexibility and control it offers, the transverse variety is preferred in classical music.

Pandit Pannalal Ghosh (1911-1960) elevated the Bansuri from a folk instrument into serious classical music. He improvised with the length and number of holes and eventually came up with longer bansuris with larger bores and a seventh hole placed 90 degrees around from the line of the other six holes. Longer bansuris provided better coverage in the lower octaves.

Norwegian Air Shuttle 'Ole Bull'

Norwegian Air Shuttle 'Ole Bull'

Bull, Ole, eccentric Norwegian violinist. He was extremely precocious, and played the violin experimentally even before acquiring the rudiments of music. At the age of 9 he played solos with the Bergen Harmonic Soc. His teachers were then Niels Eriksen and J.H. Poulsen; later he had regular instruction with M. Ludholm. Ignoring academic rules, he whittled the bridge almost to the level of the finger- board, so as to be able to play full chords on all 4 strings. He was sent by his father to Christiania to study theology, but failed the entrance examinations; instead, he organized a theater orch., which he led with his violin. In 1829 he played in Copenhagen and Kassel. In 1831 he went to Paris, where he heard Paganini and became obsessed with the idea of imitating his mannerisms and equaling his success, a fantasy devoid of all imagined reality because of Bull’s amateurish technique. However, he developed a personal type of playing that pleased the public, particularly in localities rarely visited by real artists. During the season 1836—37 he played 274 concerts in England and Ireland; in 1839 he visited the great German violinist and composer Spohr in Kassel, in the hope of receiving useful advice from him. In 1840 he played Beethoven’s Krentzer Sonata in London, with Liszt at the piano. On July 23, 1849, he announced the formation of a Norwegian Theater in Bergen, which was opened on Jan. 2,1850. While he failed to impress serious musicians and critics in Europe, he achieved his dream of artistic success in America; he made 5 concert tours across the U.S., playing popular selections and his own compositions on American themes with such fetching titles as Niagara, Solitude of the Prairies, and To the Memory of Washington, interspersing them with his arrangements of Norwegian folk songs. He entertained a strong conviction that Norway should generate its own national art, but the practical applications of his musical patriotism were failures because of his lack of formal study and a concentration on tawdry effects; still, it may be argued that he at least prepared the ground for the emergence of true Norwegian music; indeed, it is on his recommendation that Grieg was sent to study at the Leipzig Cons. Characteristically, Ole Bull became attracted by the then-current ideas of communal socialism. In 1852 he purchased 11,144 acres in Pennsylvania for a Norwegian settlement, but his lack of business sense led his undertaking to disaster. The settlement, planned on strict socialist lines, was given the name Oleana, thus establishing a personal connection with the name of its unlucky founder. Oleana soon collapsed, but Ole Bull earned admiration in Norway as a great national figure. Many of his violin pieces, mostly sentimental or strident in nature, with such titles as La preghiera d’una madre, Variazioni di bravura, Polacca guerriera, etc., were publ., but they sank into predictable desuetude.

When marimba rhythms start to play

When marimba rhythms start to play

:::

Sway
When marimba rhythms start to play
Dance with me
Make me sway
Like the lazy ocean hugs the shore
Hold me close
Sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze
Bend with me
Sway with ease
When we dance you have a way with me
Stay with me
Sway with me

Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have that magic technique
When we sway I grow weak

I can hear the sound of violins
Long before
It begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth
Sway me now

Quien sera el que me quiere a mi
Quien sera
Quien sera
Quien sera el que me de su amor
Quien sera
Quien sera

I can hear the sound of violins
Long before
It begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth
Sway me now

Sway me smooth, Sway me now

I loved both the Rosemary Clooney and Dean Martin versions. And I still do.
