tetouan madina Tetouan or Tittawin (Berber: Ti??awin, Arabic: ?????, Spanish: Tetuan, French: Tetouan) is a city in northern Morocco. The Berber name means literally "the eyes" and figuratively "the water springs". Tetouan is one of the two major ports of Morocco on the Mediterranean Sea. It lies a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar, and about 40 mi (60 km) E.S.E. of Tangier. In 2004 the city had 320,539 inhabitants (census figure). Tetouan's civil airport Sania Ramel Airport is located 6 km in the East. Arabic is the official language but it is not used for everyday dialogue. Moroccan Darija-Arabic is predominant while a minority uses Tarifit language (a Northern Berber language) in their daily life. The use of Spanish and French is still widespread especially by the businessmen and intellectual elites. Its main religion is Islam but there are minorities of Christians. The medina (old town) of Tetouan is on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO.[2] The inner city is very characteristic and traditional. One can find many white houses there, especially low houses. Everywhere in the city there are people performing their craftsmanship, like weavers, jewellers, leather workers. Kacem Weaving Master weaver, Kacem, in his carpet shop not far from our weavers' home of Sidi Mokhtar, 1.5 hours away from Marrakech. It's very unusual for a Moroccan man to weave on the upright looms. Kacem is an artist and creates rugs which look like abstract designs. He is a philosopher, an artist, a businessman and a gardener all rolled into one. Go and see him if you go to Morocco. Access to Port Meadow is via Walton Well Road or Aristotle Lane in the south or from Wolvercote in the north. It is a typical English flood-meadow and is a favourite area for walking, with easy access from the city of Oxford. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. At the southern end of the meadow is Fiddler's Island in a loop of the River Thames. In the winter the meadow floods and if frozen forms a huge and safe area for skating. In late spring vast areas are carpeted with buttercups. Horses, cattle and geese graze the meadow and many birds can often be seen. The River Thames (known as the Isis at this point) flows through this large grazing meadow. This is where the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat on July 4th 1862 up the river with three young girls — Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell. While journeying slowly from Folly Bridge to near Godstow, Dodgson began at their request to make up a story that later was expanded into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Because the meadow has never been ploughed, it contains well preserved archaeological remains, some of which survive as residual earthworks. Of particular note are several Bronze Age round barrows, an area of Iron Age settlement, and the foundations of 17th-century fortifications from the Parliamentary siege of Oxford during the English Civil War. In the 17th and 18th centuries the meadow was used for horse racing, and low stone bridges laid over washes and ditches for this purpose still survive.[1] During the First World War part of Port Meadow was used as a military airfield and the Royal Artillery had a base there. 102 i am a midget. ever so often rob looks at me, giggles, and says, "you're short." well i'm sorry i'm not a freakish tall monster like SOME people. just because you're a full foot taller than me doesn't give you the right to giggle. hmph. it's an absolute miracle of science i got this to focus on my height. oh right, and for the purposes of this miracle, i'm 5'2" not 5'3". i'll return to being 5'3" in my next picture. ;) 7/11/09 23:16 day 360: weddingland after greenmarketing on saturday afternoon, mari and i went to an atelier in midtown to officially buy her dress and get her measurements taken. we were served white wine and glittery cupcakes. i was not allowed to photograph the amazing mother-of-the-bride dresses. then we shopped for underwear and ate guacamole.
