Tetouan or Tittawin (Berber: Ti??awin, Arabic: ?????, Spanish: Tetuan, French: Tetouan) is a city in northern Morocco. The Berber name means literally "the eyes" and figuratively "the water springs". Tetouan is one of the two major ports of Morocco on the Mediterranean Sea. It lies a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar, and about 40 mi (60 km) E.S.E. of Tangier. In 2004 the city had 320,539 inhabitants (census figure). Tetouan's civil airport Sania Ramel Airport is located 6 km in the East.
Arabic is the official language but it is not used for everyday dialogue. Moroccan Darija-Arabic is predominant while a minority uses Tarifit language (a Northern Berber language) in their daily life. The use of Spanish and French is still widespread especially by the businessmen and intellectual elites. Its main religion is Islam but there are minorities of Christians.
The medina (old town) of Tetouan is on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO.[2] The inner city is very characteristic and traditional. One can find many white houses there, especially low houses. La ville de Tetouan est situee sur la pointe nord du Maroc, tout pres du sud de l'Andalousie.
La medina de la ville, classee au Patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco depuis 1997, fut construite a partir du VIIIe siecle. Son architecture temoigne de l'influence de l'Espagne dans cette region.
Le quartier d'El Ensanche, notamment, a l'ouest de la medina, a des allures typiquement andalouses avec ses batiments de 5 etages, au rez-de-chaussee desquels sont amenages des commerces.

Master weaver, Kacem, in his carpet shop not far from our weavers' home of Sidi Mokhtar, 1.5 hours away from Marrakech. It's very unusual for a Moroccan man to weave on the upright looms.
