A stain is a discoloration that can be clearly distinguished from the surface, material, or medium it is found upon. Stains are caused by the chemical or physical interaction of two dissimilar materials.

Coffee Stain
The stain represents the balance of coffee that didn't wind up on me when the nice lady sat down next to me and knocked the cup over into my lap. Burning flesh aside, it actually made for a great conversation starter. I don't recommend frequent usage though.
