Ukraine's Trade Policy: A Strategy for Integration into Global Trade (Country Studies)

Ukraine's Trade Policy: A Strategy for Integration into Global Trade (Country Studies)

Ukraine's Trade Policy identifies the key drivers of Ukraine's recent trade performance, assesses current trade policies, and proposes recommendations to strengthen the Ukraine?¦s trade integration strategy. It also identifies core bottlenecks in the ongoing integration processes, including global and regional integration. The study concludes that the main obstacles to furthering Ukraine?¦s trade integration are domestic, and relate to deficiencies in the business environment. Problems in customs administration, standardization, and administrative barriers for new entry require immediate attention. The report highlights specific policy issues that hamper WTO accession, such as trade legislation, protection of intellectual property rights, government support for specific industries, and export restrictions. It also recommends improvements in the structure of Ukraine?¦s import tariffs, reform of both the regime of free economic zones and mechanism of VAT refund, and investment in a major upgrade of government capacity for investment and export promotion. The report also draws attention to the importance of the post-WTO accession agenda for Ukraine. To take advantage of WTO membership, the Government will need to undertake significant institutional reforms to implement WTO regulatory rules in ways that facilitate integration into the world economy and provide benefits to private sector participants.

USA - Baltimore - National Aquarium (Pacific Sea Nettle)

USA - Baltimore - National Aquarium (Pacific Sea Nettle)

After New York, Boston and Washington D.C., I am now in Baltimore.
The main attraction here is the National Aquarium, reputedly the best exhibit on marine life in the entire States. I think some aquariums will rear at this, but hey, I didn't invent it ;-)

National Aquarium, Baltimore
After paying the hefty entrance fee I was expecting incredible exhibits and surprising facts for the visitor, but the first 10 minutes inside were such a disappointment, I even took out my ticket to see if there was any 15min refund policy on the back!
The whole place was just crowded with overweight Americans on holiday, snacking on burgers and ice-cream, clogging all corridors and passages and making an enourmous noise. And nothing to see either, just a couple of giant, kindergarten-style panels with 2 random facts on jellyfishes. I even had to que to get into the first exhibition room!

But then, once inside the jellyfish room, the crowds dispersed, like fog on an early summer morning, and I was left to marvel at these colourful creatures. And to take in all the amazing explanations on the threat they have come to pose to marine - and by extent all - life on this planet. Due to pollution, over-fishing of their predators and global warming, these little bastards are taking over control of large areas of the oceans, ferociously killing entire fish populations on their way.
Not so cute anymore, huh?

Pacific sea nettle
Going by the latin name of Chrysaora fuscescens, this particular jellyfish is quite popular at aquariums, as they are brightly coloured (crowds love this) and require little maintenance (staff love this).
They can reach a bell diametere of over 1 meter, though most specimen are smaller than 50cm, with tentacles as long as 4 meter or more.
They can be found along the coast of California and Oregon, and have been spreading north to Alaska and west to Japan.

Return Policy in some stores in India

Return Policy in some stores in India

I was surprised to see receipts like I was used to seeing in America. People may say 'Hey Jennifer, India is modern and you shouldn't be so surprised to see this.' You're right. Do you know my problem? My problem is the picture of India in my head is of Chennai 10 years ago. At that time it was rare if at all to find a store with such a clear exchange policy. In the part of Chennai I was in, a few stores allowed exchanges on a personal basis- meaning if you were a long-time customer and they knew you on a first name basis then exchanges were possible. Refunds, probably not. I liked that community because many shop keepers did know me if not by name by face as I was the only foreigner there and at that time I could speak something to them in Tamil. I found a few trustworthy shop keepers, some referred to me by my friends others on my own. Rarely I found a need to return or exchange. I thought clearly about my purchases ahead of time. Anyhow we both (Krishna - my husband, and I) were both intrigued and interested to see this and find a bit of relief in it as it is familiar to us. But, I doubt small shops like the small stalls in local areas have such policies. There it's probably like in the place I was in Chennai- on a personal level. I can't wait to feel comfortable enough and know some Malayalam to go to those stores. Some may get tricked to think the mall has the best quality, but I think some of these small shops have just as good quality and it's a bit friendlier.

What do you think?

Financial sustainability of environmental investment under an empirical pollution abatement policy instrument in India: the case of wastewater treatment ... from: Environmental Science and Policy]

This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Science and Policy, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The objective of this study is to investigate the financial viability of private sector investment in effluent treatment plants (ETPs) in India by employing an assumed abatement policy instrument. The policy instrument proposed in this study is framed on a deposit-refund system. The focus of the study is to gauge the economic benefit of the investment in ETPs under the proposed policy instrument and also to compare the economic benefit with the abatement cost using standard cost-benefit analysis, including conversion of money flows to net-present-value at a real discount rate. Results show that a firm will be financially benefited under the proposed policy instrument if it invests in implementing and operating the pollution abatement equipment.

London in the Snowing Snow

London in the Snowing Snow

Another example of the treacherously snowy conditions which rendered London comprehensively paralysed in February 2009.

How could anyone be reasonably expected to go about their ordinary weekday business under conditions such as this?

Here are a few top tips for any other cities that find themselves buried under literally tens of millimetres of snow and don't know how to cope:

1. Stop All Buses
Passengers may tread snow onto the bus where other passengers may slip on it and sue you. Also, insurers may refuse to pay out after any accidents or crashes, claiming that it's unreasonable to honour the policy when the buses are taken out onto snow and ice. The last thing you want is to be in the papers because one of your drivers skidded over a load of innocent kids having a playful snowball fight on Junction 15 of the M25.

2. Stop the Underground Rail Network
I'll concede, snow doesn't typically fall underground, but passengers might tread snow down into the tunnels and other passengers may then slip on it and sue you. Your insurers may not cover any damages you face, claiming that snow is an 'act of god' and this renders any claims made on that policy null and void. Worse still, snow may accumulate in the tread of the escalators and melt, short-circuiting the electrics and causing another King's Cross. Do you really want that happening on your watch?

3. Trains, Trams and DLR
See above. Additionally, the tram operator should release a statement explaining how it can't run the trams until the roads are gritted because, despite the likelihood of grit getting into the tramlines and causing undue abrasion along with potential damage to the wheels rolling upon them, insurers may refuse to cover any damage caused to the trams in collisions with skidding cars and buses on the basis that:

a. Those motorists and bus companies were reckless in allowing their vehicles out onto ice and snow, and therefore it is solely they who are liable for any damages the tram operator might seek (via the courts at the expense of the tram operator), not to mention compensation sought by tram passengers caused distress and anxiety by the crash.

b. The tram operator was reckless and incompetent in deploying their fleet in snow and icy conditions with such great potential for collisions with non-tracked vehicles limited in their ability to stop in snow.

Any damage caused to the tramlines as a result of gritting is a problem that can be dealt with at a later date, and hopefully with Council money given that they're the ones who put down the grit that caused the damage, and have a responsibility to ensure public transport is able to run reliably.

4. Airports
Cancel all flights and turf families out into the snowy streets at night without their luggage because planes may skid on an inch of snow or people may tread snow into the terminal and others will subsequently slip on it and sue you. By ensuring that your staff treat the cattle horribly, you’ll discourage them to complain too loudly at the time.

Also, by law, delaying a flight means that the airline is liable to provide passenger food and accommodation whilst waiting for the new flight, and this can be expensive. However, by cancelling a flight the airline can freely tell people to go away without so much as a refund, let alone putting them into a hotel for the night, as long as you offer a replacement flight. But the trick here is to offer a new flight at an inappropriate time, such as the end of the following week at 3am, which for anyone who has limited time off work or school means they'll almost certainly be forced to refuse the offer. At this point, you'll have fulfilled your legal responsibilities and will get to keep the fares without having flown anyone anywhere!

Now would also be an apt time to schedule a re-run of the reassuring "Terminal 5 - It's working!" adverts, though perhaps edit out the bit that gives the average time it takes to check in.

5. Gritting of Roads
Don't. It costs too much to store grit and maintain a fleet of spreaders that only get used once every couple of decades. Besides, if you've lost all your money in the Icelandic economic collapse and have an oncoming recession to worry about, then you'll have better things to spend your pounds on. Especially when a pound is now only worth half a slice of bread (or ?1.25 if you want butter on it).

Further more, do you really want to deal with all the law suits that will inevitably come flooding in once the roads clear and car tyres start shooting pieces of grit into car windows and pedestrian eyeballs alike?

It'll all melt in a few days. Probably. So just let nature take its course, though keep an eye out for the subsequent flood overloading your drain network - You may need to empty your raw sewage tanks into the Thames again to avoid them overflowing back into the water supply.

Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340-600 'G-VNAP' London Heathrow Final Approach

Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340-600 'G-VNAP' London Heathrow Final Approach

Designed as an early generation 747 replacement, the A340-600 flies 380 passengers in a three-class cabin layout (419 in 2 class) over 7,500 nautical miles (13,900 km). It provides similar passenger capacity to a 747 but with 25% more cargo volume, and at lower trip and seat costs. First flight of the A340-600 was made on 23 April 2001. Virgin Atlantic began commercial services in August 2002.

The A340-600 is more than 10 m longer than a basic -300, more than four metres longer than the Boeing 747-400 and 2.3m longer than the A380. It held the record for being the world's longest commercial aircraft until February 2010 with the first flight of the Boeing 747-8. The A340-600 is powered by four 56,000 lbf (249 kN) thrust Rolls-Royce Trent 556 turbofans. It also has an additional four-wheel undercarriage on the fuselage center-line to cope with the increased MTOW. Airbus has made provisions for freeing additional upper deck main cabin space by providing optional arrangements for additional facilities such as crew rest areas, galleys, and lavatories upon the "stretched" A340 aircraft's lower deck.

In April 2007, The Times reported that Airbus had advised carriers to reduce cargo in the forward section by five tonnes to compensate for overweight first and business class sections. The additional weight causes the aircraft's center of gravity to move forward thus reducing cruise efficiency. Airlines affected by the advisory are considering demanding compensation from Airbus.

The A340-600HGW (High Gross Weight) version first flew on 18 November 2005 and was certified on 14 April 2006. It has an MTOW of 380 tonnes and a range of up to 7,900 NM (14,600 km), made possible by strengthened structure, increased fuel capacity, more powerful engines and new manufacturing techniques like laser beam welding. The A340-600HGW is powered by four 60,000 lbf (267 kN) thrust Rolls-Royce Trent 560 turbofans.

Emirates Airline became the launch customer for the -600HGW when it ordered 18 at the 2003 Paris Air Show; but postponed their order indefinitely and later cancelled. Rival Qatar Airways, which placed its order at the same airshow, took delivery of only four aircraft with the first aircraft on September 11, 2006. It has since let its purchase options expire.

The most direct Boeing equivalent to the A340-600 is the 777-300ER.The A340-600 will eventually be replaced by the A350-1000, which will also compete with the 777-300ER.

In March 2010 a leading British aviation magazine reported that Virgin Atlantic Airways had converted the last six remaining A340-600s on the Airbus order book to the A330 model for route expansion. (The article did not specify if the -200 or the -300 had been chosen, but it did mention Vancouver as a possible destination and that the airframes would include next-gen entertainment systems.) The article stated that Airbus had converted the six orders to the A330 model leaving no more A340-600s on back order. This led the magazine to speculate that as the A350 is on its way the whole A340 line might be closed.

Tribute to Capt. Hornbaker's crew

Tribute to Capt. Hornbaker's crew

The Hornbaker fate - Capt. Robert Hornbaker was a 778th squadron pilot, 464th Bomb Group (Heavy) based at Gioia del Colle Airfield (Pantanella AF from June '44) – Italy during WWII.
He was the recipient of DFC -won on 9/5/44 group mission #7 Target Wiener-Neustadt, Austria- “for his job of bringing home a butchered airplane despite heavy enemy opposition and a wounded co-pilot”, Lt. Stillman "Jake" Harding, Hornbaker's co-pilot that day, who also won the DFC in the same mission “with his leg nearly severed by flak he did everything a whole man could have done in assisting his pilot”.

On May 25th, 1944 Capt. Hornbaker’s crew, flying “Strictly from Hunger”, B-24 41-29412, recall letter WHITE M, took off from Gioia del Colle, to strike the Givors’s marshalling yards, 13 miles south of Lyon, France. It was mission No. 17 for the 464th BG and mission No.12 for most of the crew.

According to MACR 5415 “Strictly from Hunger” was hit by flak over target and lost engine #1. On the return flight, about 10 miles inland the rear of the formation was bounced by 3 Messerchmitt Me-109 and 1 Focke Wulf FW-190. At almost the same time flak begun to burst in front of formation. A Me.109 made a pass at a ship on the left rear box and set her engine #2 on fire.

This ship was "Strictly from Hunger", she received direct hits on the left side of the fuselage and left wing. The german 20mm shells also cut several control cables and destroyed the main fuel transfer pump. The gas tanks in the left wing were also hit, gas was pouring out from wing tanks and from bomb bay, engine #1 was leaving behind a thick black smoke stream.

Capt. Hornbaker was hit in the head and killed during this attack.

Co-pilot 2nd Lt. Ray Burkland, now in command of "Strictly from Hunger", tried, with the help of T/Sgt. Karow, to level the mortally wounded airplane while loosing altitude when the flak battery of Cape Roux, between Cannes and St. Raphael, opened up on him. Lt. Nilles, navigator, and Lt. Gein, bombardier, left their compartment and came to the flight deck. The ship was out of control but still flying. Lt. Nilles said that if they could hold the heading for 40 minutes of flight time they could make Corsica. This proved impossible when the ship caught fire and headed for the coast of France.

With a wing on fire Lt. Burkland realized the risk of a sudden explosion, unable to keep up with the main 464th formation, peeled out turning to the left, headed right over Cannes and while flying over Lerin’s island gave the order to bail out. Two man, it is believed they were both waist gunners, jumped as soon as the ship started her turn.
When the ship was about 90 degrees to the formation one man jumped out apparently from the camera hatch. His parachute opened almost immediately, another chute came out of the hatch a few seconds later and he made a delayed jump opening his chute far below the formation. Apparently they were Lt.s Gein and Nilles.

The ship completed a 180 degree turn from the formation and nosed over into a dive straight to the ground, smoking all across the wing section. All crew members, but the pilot, hit the silk.

The men whose went down over open sea faced several surface craft firing at them, probably they were shot on the way down or misjudged the jump and were not picked up.
3 of them, 2nd Lt. Burkland, S/Sgt. Karow and Sgt. Hoffman, bailed out beetwen Lerin's Island and the Cannes's harbour and were rescued from the drink, a fourth, Sgt. Reinecke bailed out over Cannes but his chute failed to open.

"Strictly from Hunger" flew over the city of Cannes and crashed on La Croix des Gardes hill. The remains of Capt. Hornbaker were found in the wreckage of the aircraft, the 3 survivors became POW.

On July 4th 1994, the Cannes municipality held a ceremony to present this monument that display four aircraft engines and a propeller. Sgt. Alfred Karow came back after 50 years, to the place of the first and only parachute jump of his life, attending the ceremony, there were also the pilot’s widow, Mrs. Velma Hornbaker; the tail gunner sister, many veterans of the 778th Bomb Squadron and Aero-Re.L.I.C people.

Our weather radar broke down about 15 minutes into the flight from New York to Los Angeles, and since there were thunderstorms forecasted along our route we had to land in Cincinnati to get it fixed. It turns out that since the FO had technically been on duty for the last 7 days (due to reserve+flying this 3 day trip) he couldn't legally fly us to LAX after the diversion since we would be landing after midnight, making it his 8th day on duty....or something along those lines. So, we need a new First Officer.

The Captain was kind enough to let me take a look at his office while we waited for the new FO.

Crescent Moon Over Boston

Crescent Moon Over Boston

This was the last shot I took at Nahant on Saturday before I decided it was time to go. The colors, believe it or not, are very close to the original straight-out-of-camera ones. The crescent moon is visible over Boston here, but of course the wide angle lens makes both the moon and Boston look tiny. I still liked the look enough to keep the shot.

The filters were a bit tricky here. I angled the 2 Lee filters about 25-30 degrees to the right because the sky was a lot brighter on that side. Then I held the Singh-Ray by hand in normal position lined up with horizon. Keeping that Singh-Ray in one place for 30 seconds was not easy.

Forgotten Continent: The Battle for Latin America's Soul

Forgotten Continent: The Battle for Latin America's Soul

Latin America has often been condemned to failure. Neither poor enough to evoke Africa’s moral crusade, nor as explosively booming as India and China, it has largely been overlooked by the West. Yet this vast continent, home to half a billion people, the world’s largest reserves of arable land, and 8.5 percent of global oil, is busily transforming its political and economic landscape.

This book argues that rather than failing the test, Latin America’s efforts to build fairer and more prosperous societies make it one of the world’s most vigorous laboratories for capitalist democracy. In many countries?including Brazil, Chile and Mexico?democratic leaders are laying the foundations for faster economic growth and more inclusive politics, as well as tackling deep-rooted problems of poverty, inequality, and social injustice. They face a new challenge from Hugo Chavez’s oil-fuelled populism, and much is at stake. Failure will increase the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants to the United States and Europe, jeopardize stability in a region rich in oil and other strategic commodities, and threaten some of the world's most majestic natural environments.

Drawing on Michael Reid’s many years of reporting from inside Latin America’s cities, presidential palaces, and shantytowns, the book provides a vivid, immediate, and informed account of a dynamic continent and its struggle to compete in a globalized world.

Secretary Clinton during ceremony at the State Department celebrating the negotiation of agreements between the United States and 100 Open Skies Partners - IMG 5559

Washington, DC – March 30, 2011.

This afternoon, Secretary Clinton celebrated the negotiation of agreements between the United States and 100 Open Skies partners at the Benjamin Franklin Room in the State Department, with negotiators, government officials, members of the airline and airport industries, the labor community, and other stakeholders in the 100-strong partnership who came to mark such special occasion. Ms. Clinton greeted Secretary Ray LaHood, who is one of the leaders in many of the Open Skies agreements, the State Department team with Under Secretary Bob Hormats, Assistant Secretary Jose Fernandez, and all the negotiators led by Kris Urs. She acknowledged Congresswoman Granger and former Secretary Maneta and a number of ambassadors who were present. She extended a special compliment to Colombian Ambassador Gabriel Silva, whose country became the 100th partner last November.
Secretary Clinton stressed the benefits of these agreements, which allow for the crossing of great distances, open up markets, create jobs, allow people in far-removed countries to interact, share information, and build business together.
The Department of State and the Department of Transportation negotiated the first Open Skies Agreement with the Netherland, in 1992. Today there are agreements with countries in every region of the planet. And on the Obama’s visit to Latin America, a new agreement with the 101st partner, Brazil, was concluded. An Open Skies agreement has powerful benefits - fewer government restrictions, more competition, more jobs in the air and on the ground; more people trading, exchanging and interacting; cheaper flights, more tourists, new routes to new cities. They deepen relationships between people in very personal ways. Building a continuous airborne corridor of prosperity around the world is one of its main goals.

Left Behind: Latin America and the False Promise of Populism

The political and economic history of Latin America has been marked by great hopes and even greater disappointments. Despite abundant resources—and a history of productivity and wealth—in recent decades the region has fallen further and further behind developed nations, surpassed even by other developing economies in Southeast Asia and elsewhere.

In Left Behind, Sebastian Edwards explains why the nations of Latin America have failed to share in the fruits of globalization and forcefully highlights the dangers of the recent turn to economic populism in the region. He begins by detailing the many ways Latin American governments have stifled economic development over the years through excessive regulation, currency manipulation, and thoroughgoing corruption. He then turns to the neoliberal reforms of the early 1990s, which called for the elimination of deficits, lowering of trade barriers, and privatization of inefficient public enterprises—and which, Edwards argues, held the promise of freeing Latin America from the burdens of the past. Flawed implementation, however, meant the promised gains of globalization were never felt by the mass of citizens, and growing frustration with stalled progress has led to a resurgence of populism throughout the region, exemplified by the economic policies of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez. But such measures, Edwards warns, are a recipe for disaster; instead, he argues, the way forward for Latin America lies in further market reforms, more honestly pursued and fairly implemented. As an example of the promise of that approach, Edwards points to Latin America's giant, Brazil, which under the successful administration of President Luis Inacio da Silva (Lula) has finally begun to show signs of reaching its true economic potential.

As the global financial crisis has reminded us, the risks posed by failing economies extend far beyond their national borders. Putting Latin America back on a path toward sustained growth is crucial not just for the region but for the world, and Left Behind offers a clear, concise blueprint for the way forward.

Mansions of Long Island's Gold Coast

Mansions of Long Island's Gold Coast

This beautifully illustrated book features the magnificent estates built in the early part of the twentieth century by the wealthy residents of Long Island's North Shore. Many of the mansions are no longer standing, making this book a critical archive and monument to their glory. In their heyday, they were inhabited by the aristocracy of America's gilded age, among them Vanderbilts, Phipps, and Pratts. The author's evocative photographs capture the splendor of these once luxurious homes, from the houses' turrets, porticos, columns, and courtyards to their vaulted entry halls, spacious ballrooms, and vast libraries. Accompanied by histories of the estates and the families that built them, this book is a classic and evocative reminder of a bygone era and lifestyle.

The Jewel of the Gold Coast: Mrs. Potter Palmer's Chicago

Bertha Honore Palmer was the "Queen" of Chicago society from the time of her marriage to the very successful Potter Palmer in 1870 until her death in 1918. This is a well researched account of her impact on the social life of Chicago, her leadership as Chairman of the Board of Lady Managers for the Columbian Exposition of 1893, and her influence on the Art Institute of Chicago, to which she donated much of what has become a great collection of Impressionist paintings. The book includes 55 illustrations including mansions built in the Gold Coast area starting in the 1870s when Potter Palmer made the bold move north of Oak Street. He filled the swamp land with sand from Lake Michigan and began selling lots to his very rich friends--hence the name "Gold Coast." A picture of the Palmer "Castle" is included, along with views of the ballroom/art gallery, entry way and items rescued after the Castle was razed. Sally Sexton Kalmbach's gem is packed with carefully researched stories, which she tells with her unique sense of humor and easy style.

North American P-51D Mustang

North American P-51D Mustang

History: One of the most effective, famous and beautiful fighter aircraft of WWII, the P-51 was designed to fulfill a British requirement dated April 1940. Because of the rapidly-mounting clouds of war in Europe, the UK asked North American Aircraft to design and build a new fighter in only 120 days. The NA-73X prototype was produced in record time, but did not fly until 26 October 1940. The first RAF production models, designated Mustang Mk Is, underwent rigorous testing and evaluation, and it was found that the 1,100-hp Allison engine was well suited for low-altitude tactical reconnaissance, but the engine's power decreased dramatically above an altitude of 12,000 feet, making it a poor choice for air-to-air combat or interception roles. Because of this, the RAF left its eight machine guns intact, but also fitted the Mustang with cameras. In this configuration, it served in at least 23 RAF squadrons, beginning in April 1942.

At the same time, the US Army Air Corps ordered a small number for tactical reconnaissance evaluation as the F-6A. After the RAF found the aircraft's performance lacking, they tested a new engine, the 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce Merlin. This gave much-improved performance, and led to the USAAF fitting two airframes with 1,430-hp Packard-built Merlin V-1650 engines. These aircraft were re-designated XP-51B. Practically overnight, the aircraft's potential began to grow.

Since the RAF had had good success with the Mustang in a ground attack role, the USAAF bought 500 aircraft fitted with dive brakes and underwing weapons pylons. These were initially designated the A-36A Apache, but later retained the name Mustang. Almost simultaneously, they ordered 310 P-51As with Allison engines. Some of these were delivered to the UK as Mustang Mk IIs, and some became F-6B reconnaissance aircraft for the USAAF.

The first Merlin-engine versions appeared in 1943 with the P-51B, of which 1,988 were built in Inglewood, California, and the P-51C, of which 1,750 were built in Dallas, Texas. Both new versions had strengthened fuselages and four wing-mounted 12.7-mm machine guns. Many of these new Mustangs were delivered to the UK as Mustang Mk IIIs, and others went to the USAAF as F-6Cs. The Merlin-powered Mustangs were exactly what the Allied bombers in Europe desperately needed, and they became famous for their long range and potent high-altitude escort capability. The most significant variant, the P-51D, featured a 360-degree-view bubble canopy, a modified rear fuselage, and six 12.77-mm machine guns. 7,956 were built, and once again, many went to the UK as Mustang Mk IVs and others became USAAF F-6D reconnaissance aircraft. Next came the P-51K, which was generally similar. A third of these became RAF Mustang IVs also, and over a hundred became F-6Ks. Very late in the war, the P-51H appeared, although only 555 of 2000 were completed before V-J Day caused the cancellation of the order. US production totaled 15,386, but at least 200 more were built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation of Australia with imported parts and designated Mustang Mk 20/21/22/23. None of these saw service before the end of the war. Under the Lend-Lease program, 50 P-51s were supplied to China, and 40 more were supplied to the Netherlands in the Pacific theater.

After the war, the P-51 remained in US service with the Strategic Air Command until 1949, and with the Air National Guard and Reserves into the 1950s. It became one of the first fighters to see combat in the Korean War. The RAF's Fighter Command used them until 1946. In addition, over 50 air forces around the world acquired and used the Mustang for many more years, some as recently as the early 1980s. When the US Air Force realigned their aircraft designations in the 1950s, the Mustang became the F-51.

In the last 40 years, surplus Mustangs have been modified and used extensively as civilian air racers, but the latest trend is for private owners to restore them to almost perfect, historically-accurate condition. As public appreciation for the Mustang has grown, the monetary value of the few remaining examples has skyrocketed. War-surplus P-51s, once auctioned from storage for less than (US) $2000, are now usually valued at three-quarters of a million dollars or more. The restoration of existing airframes has become a small industry in the US, UK and Australia, and the total number of flyable examples, despite one or two accidents each year, is growing. Several Mustangs have been or are currently being restored as two-seat, dual-control TF-51s, a trend which promises to ensure that today's operators are better-trained than any previous generation of Mustang pilots.

4/365 "Ready or Not Here I Come!"

4/365

It's Monday and I am on my way to Utah! Cameron thought I wasn't coming until Tuesday. After making up crazy stories as to why I won't be able to talk on the phone today, Cameron thought I was at my Aunts house for dinner, (where I won't have service). I thought it would work out perfectly, but after the snowstorm the airlines were mess. I was in a plane that was too small to hold enough fuel to make it from Detroit to Salt Lake City. We ended up stopping in Nebraska to refuel, it was the longest flight ever! Poor Cameron had to go 7 hours not being able to get a hold of me. I arrived in Utah at about 12am Utah time. Ryan, Cameron's brother picked me up from the airport and brought me home. When we got home there was a box waiting for me to climb in. The surprise was a success despite all of the cancellations and delays!

The Art of Flight - Director's Cut

The Art of Flight - Director's Cut

The Art Of Flight is a guerrilla documentary that was shot illegally in Egypt on camcorders and a laptop. The film serves as a back story to the 2006 massacre of Sudanese refugees in Cairo. The filmmaker was nearly arrested three times during the course of shooting. This feature length film tells the story of three people, a refugee from southern Sudan, a human rights activist from northern Sudan and an American journalist in self-imposed exile, all living in Cairo. For very different reasons, the trio has found themselves struggling to survive in Egypt, a U.S. financed dictatorship which has reluctantly become their home.

The Art Of Flight features artwork of Sudanese painters living in exile. In addition to paintings from Sudanese artists and torture victims, the film also features an original soundtrack by Al-Khafiyeen, a musical ensemble of refugees who played together for a single night to score the film. The film delves deep into questions about the nature of charity, the consequences of American empire and the price of silence.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Available on ITunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, Amazon.com (CD), CustomFlix.com (CD)
This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

Day 306 of the 365 Journey
The TENTH thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me:
BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED

Unfortunately Santa realized all too late after leaving the North Pole that his head elf “Barnard” had forgotten to pack the batteries. He figured if he could charge Talking Tedding with enough juice, it should last him in to the early hours of the fun filled morning. Although Santa was confident that Talking Teddy could take the shock, he wasn’t quite sure which arm was positive and which was negative! That’s all he needed on this busy night; to run around extinguishing a fiery fur ball.

Oh if it was just that easy...go to Ikea, buy everything you need for your home, housewife included. Uh, what am I saying...it is actually a sad fact that it is possible to buy your self a wife through a catalogue.

Sorry if you think this is a repeat, just wanted to do another take on my mail order bride. The first one was a bimbo, this one is the perfect housewife. Im not talking down to housewives though. Far from it. I am a housewife myself and bloody proud of it. Despite what the feminists say, as a housewife, you are not a slave, nor a sex object, nor is he entitled to beat you or abuse you or your children in any way- physically, mentally or emotionally. It is not fair to assume 'housewife' is the same thing as 'doormat'. We are proud of our abilities to keep a household in perfect order!

Day 84: Roger Tower. Archer 2228Z is cleared to land on 27L.

You may not know that I do actually have a Private Pilot's license and learned to fly shortly after I graduated from college. The sad part of the story is that I haven't flow as PIC (Pilot In Command) of an airplane in more than seven years due to a lack of time and money. This photo contains some of my pilot's gear -- including a sectional chart, a kneeboard with my E6B flight computer, my logbook, and a pair of nomex flight gloves. Most pilots don't wear nomex gloves, but I also volunteered for an air museum that operated warbird aircraft. When I tagged along to airshows as part of the crew (not as a pilot -- I wasn't qualified for that!), I wore a nomex flight suit, nomex gloves, and usually a helmet.

I'm fortunate to have had rides in a B-24 Liberator, a Corsair, a T-6 Texan, a Stearman, and an A-26 Invader. When I was doing the flying, my plane of choice was a Piper Warrior II or a Piper Archer II.

The Apache - Destroy, Disrupt, Delay

The Apache - Destroy, Disrupt, Delay

The Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) (formerly Hughes) AH-64A Apache is the Army's primary attack helicopter.

It is a quick-reacting, airborne weapon system that can fight close and deep to destroy, disrupt, or delay enemy forces.

The Apache is designed to fight and survive during the day, night, and in adverse weather throughout the world.

The principal mission of the Apache is the destruction of high-value targets with the HELLFIRE missile.

It is also capable of employing a 30MM M230 chain gun and Hydra 70 (2.75 inch) rockets that are lethal against a wide variety of targets. The Apache has a full range of aircraft survivability equipment and has the ability to withstand hits from rounds up to 23MM in critical areas.

The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine, four bladed, multi-mission attack helicopter designed as a highly stable aerial weapons-delivery platform. It is designed to fight and survive during the day, night, and in adverse weather throughout the world.

With a tandem-seated crew consisting of the pilot, located in the rear cockpit position and the co-pilot gunner (CPG), located in the front position, the Apache is self-deployable, highly survivable and delivers a lethal array of battlefield armaments.

The Apache features a Target Acquisition Designation Sight (TADS) and a Pilot Night Vision Sensor (PNVS) which enables the crew to navigate and conduct precision attacks in day, night and adverse weather conditions.

The Apache can carry up to 16 Hellfire laser designated missiles.

With a range of over 8000 meters, the Hellfire is used primarily for the destruction of tanks, armored vehicles and other hard material targets.

The Apache can also deliver 76, 2.75" folding fin aerial rockets for use against enemy personnel, light armor vehicles and other soft-skinned targets.

Rounding out the Apache’s deadly punch are 1,200 rounds of ammunition for its Area Weapons System (AWS), 30MM Automatic Gun.

Powered by two General Electric gas turbine engines rated at 1890 shaft horsepower each, the Apache’s maximum gross weight is 17,650 pounds which allows for a cruise airspeed of 145 miles per hour and a flight endurance of over three hours.

The AH-64 can be configured with an external 230-gallon fuel tank to extend its range on attack missions, or it can be configured with up to four 230-gallon fuel tanks for ferrying/self-deployment missions.

The combat radius of the AH-64 is approximately 150 kilometers.

The combat radius with one external 230-gallon fuel tank installed is approximately 300 kilometers [radii are temperature, PA, fuel burn rate and airspeed dependent]. The AH-64 is air transportable in the C-5, C-141 and C-17.

An on-board video recorder has the capability of recording up to 72 minutes of either the pilot or CPG selected video. It is an invaluable tool for damage assessment and reconnaissance.

The Apache's navigation equipment consists of a doppler navigation system, and most aircraft are equipped with a GPS receiver.

The Apache has state of the art optics that provide the capability to select from three different target acquisition sensors. These sensors are

* Day TV. Views images during day and low light levels, black and white.
* TADS FLIR. Views thermal images, real world and magnified, during day, night and adverse weather.
* DVO. Views real world, full color, and magnified images during daylight and dusk conditions. >

The Apache has four articulating weapons pylons, two on either side of the aircraft, on which weapons or external fuel tanks can be mounted. The aircraft has a LRF/D.

This is used to designate for the Hellfire missile system as well as provide range to target information for the fire control computer's calculations of ballistic solutions. Threat identification through the FLIR system is extremely difficult.

Although the AH-64 crew can easily find the heat signature of a vehicle, it may not be able to determine friend or foe.

Forward looking infrared detects the difference in the emission of heat in objects. On a hot day, the ground may reflect or emit more heat than the suspected target.

In this case, the environment will be "hot" and the target will be "cool".

As the air cools at night, the target may lose or emit heat at a lower rate than the surrounding environment.

At some point the emission of heat from both the target and the surrounding environment may be equal.

This is IR crossover and makes target acquisition/detection difficult to impossible.

IR crossover occurs most often when the environment is wet.

This is because the water in the air creates a buffer in the emissivity of objects. This limitation is present in all systems that use FLIR for target acquisition.

Low cloud ceilings may not allow the Hellfire seeker enough time to lock onto its target or may cause it to break lock after acquisition.

At extended ranges, the pilot may have to consider the ceiling to allow time for t

Taken onboard flight BE7109. 2009

When I boarded this flight there were about 12 other passengers with me. Half of them sat in the back, half in the front and for some reason my seat was right in the middle. Just me. I took this opportunity to get out my cameras and as I started taking some pictures the flight attendant approached me. She was curious which camera I was using (the Polaroid 440 land camera at that point) and I explained it all to her, demonstrating how peel apart film works and how nice these photos can look. She was quite interested and only a couple of minutes after she left me her colleague came over. He offered me "to get up and take some photos of the rest of the cabin" if I liked. I did like.
I stayed in my seat for another 4 minutes. What should I do? This was it! I should get up and ask her. Or I could stay in my seat. Read my book. I'm quite tired. It's nice and comfy here. No need to talk to strangers.
I composed myself, wiped the cold sweat off my forehead and approached the flight attendant who now sat in the back eating an apple. It took me and the other flight attendant some convincing but in the end she agreed to pose for me. I took my two last shots on this roll of her.

Flight crew, UA 771, Seattle to LA

Flight crew, UA 771, Seattle to LA

I had the best flight experience today from Seattle to LA. The flight was practically empty, so I went from seat to seat to take pictures. Eventually the flight attendants noticed (no kidding...). Blaine (left) and David (right) are both into photography. We ended up talking photography for almost an hour. It was great.

At the end of the flight, Blaine wanted a picture taken of the crew that he's working with because he'd be retiring soon. I took one picture with his point and shoot and then its battery went out, so I took a couple of shots with my camera and will be sending them to him.

By the way, David has a Canon A1 camera with a few cool lenses that he's willing to part with if there's a good offer. Just thought I'd advertise it here. :)
