Driving to Marseille

Driving to Marseille

By the time we got to the airport, all the cars were already booked and taken. There was one desk left that we hadn't yet tried, but no one was there. Rita decided to head back downtown to Geneva to stay with her friend and Colin and I began trying to look into flights. After a few tears from me and a few worried looks from Colin, the last and final rental car desk had someone behind it. Not only did she have a car for us, it was also a lot cheaper than all the other places. We were saved! We immediately called Rita and asked if she still wanted to join us. She did, and made her way back to the airport and met us. And then we began out 6 hour drive from Geneva to Marseille. We arrived just before midnight and dropped Rita off, then made our way to the hotel. Once we arrived, we received word that the train strike was over. It lasted just that one day. Quite the adventure! But I was glad to get rid of that car ASAP. Driving in Marseille is terrifying!

In Marseille I went to visit some prisoners in the famous prison "Les Baumettes". Unfortunately, this prison is not in the 2nd district of Marseille as this street sign might suggest but far away from the heart of Marseille.

Heli of a Night

Heli of a Night

That awful pun will make sense in a moment.

Last night Tim and I are playing with these little RC copters in our yard. Tim's a fan of the "High Altitude Challenge," which consists of him flying as high as he can, sometimes up to about 80 ft. These challenges end in one of three ways:

1) He lands it safely.
2) He lands it in a tree and has to buy a new one.
3) He flies it so high that it catches a wind current, gets blown out of the radio's range, and takes off down the block for parts unknown.

Guess which one happened last night.

After running a few hundred feet around the block we found the copter miraculously undamaged, having crash-landed not in a tree or someone's roof or the windshield of the Lamborghini that was parked across the street, but on a narrow patch of grass on the sidewalk.

After counting our blessings, we decided it'd be better to fly these things in the park down the street. When we got there, we noticed a firetruck parked across a large empty field, but think nothing of it. A few seconds later I noticed three firemen heading across the field towards us.

Me: Howdy!
Fireman: Hi there!
Me: Are we in your way?
Fireman: No, what are you guys up to out here?
Me: Who, us? Nothing, just flying our RC helicopters.
Fireman: Yup, you're the guys we're looking for.

I'll let you decide how relevant it is that the Federal Building is on the other side of the park, a couple hundred yards from where we're standing. Like, if Timothy McVeigh had lived in Los Angeles instead of Oklahoma City, this is the building he'd have bombed. It's not really a place you want to be questioned by law enforcement for flying little radio controlled aircraft around in the dark.

Fortunately, the firemen were cool as shit. They said some woman had called 911 to report that a helicopter had crashed, but they assumed it was just a couple of idiots like us. And it made their job a lot easier that we had seemingly been drawn to them in order to straighten the whole thing out. They laughed it off, complimented Tim's Police chopper body kit, and accused the woman who called of being a dumb drunk.

Shot this after we got back to commemorate the evening's absurdity. The police copter on the left lost most of its landing gear in the first crash, and it's little DIY LED searchlight is dangling by a piece of Scotch tape. At the moment it won't fly in anything remotely resembling a controlled manner. My Hunter on the right looks better, but it's landing gear is also busted and one of the rotor blades is destroyed.

Frankly I'm surprised it took this long to get the cops called on us.

That rail in the grass is where the rail in the photo was in 1903 when Orville Wright went speeding down the track for the world's first engine-powered flight. He made it as far as the first white stone marker past the big gray one. Twelve seconds. The next three flights were longer, marked off my the other stones down the path.

My favorite side story on this was the man from the local Coast Guard station who took the "first flight" photo -- the one you see there on the sign. He had never even SEEN a camera before that morning when Wilbur set his up, pointed it at the end of the rail and told him to "push this button" if he saw space between the plane and the sand. The guy had never seen a camera but took one of the most famous photos ever on his FIRST try!

flight of the bumblebee... 177365

Last night, Tiny complained that there had been a hair in his soup, and the Barber of Seville was most annoyed. By morning he had sent them on their way suggesting that they had been very lucky that it had only been hare and not duck soup.

The trio followed a contrary bumblebee in Mary's garden looking for the path that might lead them to Halfway Mountain. Despite their ordeals, they still held onto the dream.

Following the flight of the bumblebee seemed the most logical thing to do ever since they had started this journey. The bee seemed to be on the right track. Things were looking up until duck (accidentally) swallowed the bee ...

August 15th The queue is How long?! Cuiaba to Rio Claro Lodge Pocone

We flew with TAM Lineas – A Brazilian airline and I have to say we were both impressed by the service – well for ?1000 per person flying economy you would expect good service would you not? That said, the in-flight entertainment was rather limited. We arrived on time in Sao Paolo early the next morning and had a three hour window to catch our onward connection to Cuiaba. Unfortunately with it being a domestic connection we needed to collect our bags and clear customs before proceeding to the gate. There were massive queues that seemed to snake back and forth through the airport and no help from the local authorities as we became somewhat anxious that we might miss our connection. I tried to remain calm, as Ian became increasingly panicky and we eventually got to the gate with about 10 minutes to spare.

Our connecting flight stopped at Campo Grande before Cuiaba and its eventual destination of Brasilia. The flight took about four hours, but we gained another hour as we passed through another time-zone arriving on time at 11.15. On arrival at Cuiaba it took a while for our bags to be offloaded and we were beginning to wonder if they were on their way to Brasilia. We needn’t have worried, everything arrived safely.

I was so relieved and elated to see Julio, our guide waiting for us in arrivals that I gave him a big hug! After introducing Ian (I had made all the arrangements for the trip) we were on our way. We stopped at a local supermarket to pick up some essentials for the camping part of the tour. This consisted of a bottle of rum, a slab of beer and a slab of coke (oh and some food and plenty of water).

From Cuiaba we drove directly until we reached the Transpantaneira highway at which point we slowed considerably to enjoy the wildlife that gathers in the ditches either side of the raised road. We started to see a range of birds and mammals including a variety of egrets, storks and herons. A full bird list is presented at the end, but highlights on the first day included Solitary Tinamou, Red-legged Seriema, Jabiru, Roseate Spoonbills, Plumbeous Ibis, Buff-necked Ibis, Rufus-bellied Thrush and Rufescent Tiger Herons (first sightings of these common but impressive looking birds).

Spitfire - Smithsonian Museum Washington DC

Spitfire - Smithsonian Museum Washington DC

75th Anniversary of Supermarine Spitfire maiden flight
This month we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the Supermarine Spitfire - on 5 March 1936, from Eastleigh Aerodrome (now Southampton Airport). Test pilot Captain Joseph “Mutt” Summers was reportedly so delighted his verdict was simply “Don’t touch anything”.
The Spitfire was designed, by Reginald J Mitchell (creator of the magnificent Supermarine seaplanes which won three successive Schneider Trophy contests), as a short-range interceptor in response to an Air Ministry request for a new, modern fighter aircraft. It would take advantage of new manufacturing techniques, including all-metal monocoque construction, and high-powered liquid-cooled engines such as the Rolls Royce Merlin Engine. It was fast, able to climb to 33,000ft in around nine minutes to meet enemy bombers, and its outstanding handling qualities made it relatively easy to fly.
Sadly Mitchell died in 1937, aged only 42, but the development of the Spitfire continued, led by Joe Smith, with the first production versions eventually rolling off the Supermarine production line at Woolston in mid-1938.
The Battle of Britain, in the summer of 1940, is widely regarded as the Supermarine Spitfire’s finest hour. Although its contemporary, the more numerous Hawker Hurricane, was at least as crucial to victory in the skies over southern England, the Spitfire had a higher victory to loss ratio and subsequently became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command seeing action in the European, Mediterranean, Pacific and the South-East Asian theatres. Much loved by its pilots, the Spitfire went on to serve in several roles, including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, carrier-based fighter, and trainer.
On the 20 February 1948, almost twelve years from the prototype's first flight, the final production Spitfire left the production line. More than 12,000 had been built. Spitfires remained in service with the RAF, particularly in Southeast Asia, until 1954.
Spitfire P7350, a MKIIa built at Castle Bromwich, is the oldest airworthy Spitfire in the world and the only one to have fought in the Battle of Britain. She now flies as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight alongside two Hawker Hurricanes and an Avro Lancaster.

F-101 Voodoo

F-101 Voodoo

Developed from the Xf-88 penetration fighter, the F-101 originally was designed as a long-range bomber escort. Before production began the design was changed to fill both tactical and air defense roles. The F-101 made its first flight in 1954. The first production F-101A became operational in 1957. McDonnell Aircraft delivered 807 F-101s when production ended in 1961. The multi-mission F101 was used by all three US Air Force Commands (Tactical, Strategic, and Air Defense) and by the Canadian Air Force.

The Voodoo was the world's first supersonic photo-recon aircraft. It was used during the Cuban Missile crisis and during the late 1960s in Southeast Asia. In Operation Firewall in 1957, an F-101A fighter-bomber set a world speed record of 1,207 mph.

USS Midway (CV-41)

After shakedown in the Caribbean, Midway joined in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet training schedule, with Norfolk her homeport. From 20 February 1946 she was flagship for CarDiv 1. In March, she tested equipment and techniques for cold weather operations in the North Atlantic. East Coast and Caribbean training was highlighted by Operation Sandy in September 1947, in which she test fired a captured German V-2 rocket from her flight deck, the first such launching from a moving platform.

On 29 October 1947, Midway sailed for the first of her annual deployments with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. A powerful extension of sea/air power, Midway trained between deployments and received alterations necessary to accommodate heavier aircraft as they were developed. In 1952, she participated in Operation Mainbrace, North Sea maneuvers with NATO forces, and on 1 October was redesignated CVA-41.

Midway cleared Norfolk 27 December 1954 for a world cruise, sailing via the Cape of Good Hope for Taiwan, where she joined the 7th Fleet for operations in the Western Pacific until 28 June 1955. During these operations, Midway pilots flew cover for the evacuation from the Quemoy-Matsu crisis [2] from the Tachen Islands of 15,000 Chinese nationalist troops and 20,000 Chinese civilians, along with their pigs, cows and chickens. On 28 June 1955 she sailed for overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Here, she was out of commission until 30 September 1957, while she underwent an extensive modernization program (SCB-110). Midway received an enclosed "hurricane bow," an aft deck-edge elevator, an angled flight deck, and steam catapults.

Home ported at Alameda, California, Midway began annual deployments with the 7th Fleet in 1958, and in the South China Sea during the Laotian Crisis of Spring 1961. During her 1962 deployment, her aircraft tested the air defense systems of Japan, Korea, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Taiwan. When she again sailed for the Far East 6 March 1965, her aircraft were prepared for combat operations, and from mid-April flew strikes against military and logistics installations in North and South Vietnam.

Returning to Alameda on 23 November, Midway entered San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard on 11 February 1966 for a massive modernization (SCB-101.66) which proved to be very expensive and controversial. The flight deck was enlarged from 2.8 to 4 acres (11,300 to 16,200 m?). The elevators were enlarged, relocated, and given almost double the weight capacity. Midway also received new catapults, arresting gear, and a centralized air conditioning plant. Massive cost overruns raised the price of this program from $88 million to $202 million, and thus precluded a similar modernization planned for Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42). Midway finally recommissioned on 31 January 1970. It was also found that the modifications significantly reduced the ship's seakeeping capabilities and ability to conduct air operations in rough seas, which necessitated further modifications to correct the problem.

2007 October 21 (Day 8) - 6 a.m. view of the Mission Valley La Quintas parking lot from the 3rd floor. We were up early to make my flight home. (Dee was headed to San Francisco in the afternoon.) People park badly here. The evening before, there was a Mercedes that took up four stalls. FOUR. Notice especially in this picture how the car closest to the exit/entrance is partially in it. Oh well. The fog softened everything, even my mood at idiot drivers. ^_^;

The morning after

The morning after

This weekend proved to be a marathon in more ways than one. ;)

A very good friend of mine, Elvina, who's based in Taipei was in town the
past weekend for what she calls "The Ultimate Hong Kong Weekend Shopping
Festival." It's sale season in HK around this time of the year (just a
little behind the Great Singapore Sale) and she's been whining about wanting
to come over and shop eve since I was in Taipei a month ago. So this
weekend, that's exactly what we did-- in daylight. When the sun rested, we
were up for something else and only retreating when the sun was up again--
we partied, drank and got merry!

Friday night was dinner at DeVino (for my Filipino friends-- this is the
place that Miriam Quiamboa's Italian husband owns) with, of course, French
and Italian friends of El's cousin (Tasha-- another shoppaholic who met El
here to burn dollars!). Dinner was with wine and espresso was with dessert
wine-- given the rate I've been going the past months, I am without
practice. I was already extra giddy after dinner as we walked to Dragon-I, a
bar/club in Lan Kwai Fong. There we gave justice to yet uncountable (who's
counting eh?) shots of Polish vodka by dancing like mad. Nothing sheds off
inhibition quite like alcohol intoxication. We then moved to Drop (the only
club that was open around 4.30 am!) and had more to drink-- by this time, I
was already really "happy." Haha. Night turned into day and I crawled into
bed just in time for "not-so-happy" people to grab pancakes at McDonald's. I
woke up with a splitting headache. Serves me right.

The rest of Saturday (with the sun up) was, needless to say, a blur to me.
Now, Saturday night was another story. El was having drinks with Tasha & the
rest at Tokyo Joe so I went over to pick her up so we can meet Steph. We
went to Balalaika, a Russian resto at LKF for dinner and Steph met us there.
Then off we went to The Apartment to check it out but decided to go
somewhere with live music just to chill. Everywhere was packed as it's
Julyfest in LKF so the streets are flooded and the bars jammed. We had a
couple of drinks at this pub where a Filipino band (who, by the way, did not
do justice to The Filipino Talent) was playing and it was awful. We hurried
with our vodkas and left. We met the crazy crew of the night before at
Dragon-I, had more vodka and on the way to another club, we had Jell-o
shots. We left LKF around 5 am & ended up chilling at Kian's apartment (with
champagne!) until 7. I was in bed just before 8. I woke up around 12 (I was
meeting them for dim sum?!) with a splitting headache. I never learn.

Dim sum at this fancy Chinese resto in Times Square was good for the
headache, not stressful as some busy less-expensive dim sum places (which
are the best ones, by the way). We then headed for coffee at Lee gardens.
The dessert sampler and chocolate truffles were exquisite. El & I bid adieu
as we needed to get her last-minute shopping done before her midnight flight
back to Taipei. She didn't want to go and I didn't want her to-- the weekend
with her was fabulous! I haven't had so much fun in a long time (well, I
haven't been drinking like "that" in a long time..). :)

The morning after is always of intense regret when your head throbs like it
is going to explode any minute but come nightfall and you're up for just
another round too many. Nothing compares to too much vodka and too little
sleep. Haha!

P.S. Bart, thanks for the Berroca you left at my place. It came in handy
this weekend. :)

1963 Cessna 172D N2740U

1963 Cessna 172D N2740U

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high-wing fixed-wing aircraft. First flown in 1955 and still in production, more Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft.

The 1963 172D model introduced the lower rear fuselage with wraparound Omni-Vision rear window and a one-piece windshield. New rudder and brake pedals were also added. 1146 172Ds were built.

1963 also saw the introduction of the 172D Powermatic. This was equipped with a Continental GO-300E producing 175 horsepower (130 kW) and a cruise speed 11 mph (18 km/h) faster than the standard 172D. In reality this was not a new model but was a Cessna 175 Skylark that had been renamed for its last year of production. The Skylark had gained a reputation for poor engine reliability and the renaming of it as a 172 was a marketing attempt to regain sales through rebranding. The move was not a success and neither the 1963 Powermatic nor the Skylark were produced again after the 1963 model year.
