The seat: Orchestra, Row PP, Seat 9 ($37) The hall itself is OLD. The floors are wooden, creaky, and uneven with faded red carpet runners along the main aisles. The floorboard space between rows is worn and discolored. The seats are wooden with leather cushioned tacked on and the seats aren't spring loaded so you have to remember to push it back up when you leave. And it's GORGEOUS. It reeks of history and has a sense of class and grandeur that comes with being a historical momument. The hall is narrow and deep with two (I think) 4 rowed balconies. The sound is fantastic. It's so big, so full, so in your face (even in row PP) that you are almost startled. The best part of the wood was feeling the vibrations from the orchestra through your feet!!! The most phenomenal thing was NOT ONE PERSON clapped between movements. Thank you, Jared. If not for you, I wouldn't be a "no-clapping-btwn-movements snob" and I probably would have gone for a standing ovation between each movement. The show itself was spectacular. Renee Flemming was fantastic. Dutilleux was actually in house for this show, so you had this amazing standing ovation for the orchestra, the conductor, the soprano, and the composer all in one place. Magical. 7/15/98, Wayne, NJ - Skaters World This show was at a skating rink…the sound guy refused to give us any horns in the monitors. We played well and had fun, and people enjoyed all three bands. That said, I’m going to let Mike Rehfus of The Articles take over. He asked me if I wanted him to write a little something every once in a while, and I told him he certainly could, so he wrote a special piece about the tour thus far, entitled: Renewing One’s Faith In Mankind Through Sleeping On Floors: Random Truths About Touring Mike Rehfus The Articles Last year The Articles logged something like a million road miles, the first half million all by our lonesomes. But it wasn’t until we hooked up with Skinnerbox that we discovered The First Law of Touring: Touring with other bands is more fun. It’s obvious, really. Seeing the same faces every night really takes the edge off the whole hunger/homelessness/exhaustion thing. But not since we went steady with The Skalars and Magadog for a few weeks last fall have we had the pleasure of the shared road. It was worth the wait. The major brotherhood/sisterhood vibe of Mooonstomp 3 is electric. Easy Big Fella and the Robustos are positively two of the most wonderful bands we’ve had the chance to play with, let alone tour with, and so far it’s all made for some seriously good times. The kind of times that you start missing now because you know you’ll really miss them when they’re all over. We’ve already instituted the ole’ touring tradition of the Van-to-Van Foreign Exchange Program. Riding to the next gig with another band helps break up the monotony of staring at your bandmates beautiful faces day after day, and is also a bold reminder that yes, Virginia, all touring bands are very, very dysfunctional. But I digress. So far most all of The Articles and The Robustos participated in the exchange program, however, I believe Brett Rakestraw (Robustos tenor sax) and I were the first over-nighters . After the Thursday, July 9 show at The Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA I became an honorary Robusto, and Brett became an Article. Robusto bassist Jay Wallace enticed me into their sleek new 15 passenger Econoline with the promise of a swimming pool at the host’s house (you can make me do anything with the promise of a swimming pool). We rolled into the murky Pennsylvania night, the windows glazing and hazing with raindrops, the whole van caterwauling along to Easy Big Fella’s infectious “Eat at Joey’s”. Many of the songs EBF is playing this tour are on it, our favorites being “Road Alone,” “Big Guns,” “Rude Boy,” and of course, that special hidden track you’ll just have to buy the disk to find out about. Our hosts for the evening lived in King of Prussia, PA; the parents of Doug Reilly, drummer for the very cool Space Ate Mafia. I’m not entirely sure they were expecting two bands. Nonetheless, his parents had prepared a gorgeous picnic spread in the dining room and cleared about an acre of floor space for the combined forces of Easy Big Fella and The Robustos (The Articles were being housed by old old friends back in Lancaster). Folks jawed and noshed into the wee hours, and in the morning we luxuriated in a full breakfast spread, over-due showers and laundry service. Our hosts opened their doors to perfectly strange strangers, and all they asked of us was a group photo on the lawn. The mind-boggling generosity of the Reilly’s leads us to another law of touring: People are extraordinarily cool to touring musicians. It’s eerie. Night after night, a loving host always seems to come out of the woodwork. In Cleveland on July 5th, uber-fan John Socks swooped in to house The Articles. Darren in Pittsburgh brought home The Articles and The Robustos to his very tolerant mom’s house while EBF crashed at bassist Jeff’s Mother’s Cousin’s house (map that one out). In NYC, former Magadog bassist Gabe materialized to offer us 4000 square feet of crash space in Brooklyn. He couldn’t be found after the show, however, and several Articles woke up in the van underneath the Williamsburg Bridge outside Moon Man Noah Wildman’s pad, inside, his floor carpeted with Easy Big Fella and several random Articles. After the DIY Ska fest in Philly on July 12, The Articles crashed at drummer Dan Margulis’ sister’s house, and The Robustos went back to The Reillys. And after the Wheaton, MD show on July 14, all three bands (23 of us) stayed at my sister Patty’s house in Reston, VA. The cost of lodging at Patty’s, however, was a little higher. Patty demanded a photo of all three bands on the front lawn AND t-shirts. So when this glorious Moonstomp 3 tour rumbles through your hometown, remember: even though The Articles, The Robustos, and Easy Big Fella represent the future of ska as you know it, and are all extraordinarily talented and charming (and dysfunctional), we’re still humble enough to accept outrageous acts of hospitality. You’ll only help to reconfirm our faith in mankind, renew our love-affair with the road, and make us all The Coconut The tree of life of the Philippines which isn't really a tree. Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) The coconut it not a nut but a fruit. The term coconut pertains to the fruit while the tree is called a coconut palm. It belongs to the Arecaceae palm family and can grow up to 6 meters tall. Called the "tree of life" in the Philippines, all parts of the palm has uses -nothing is wasted even at the end of its fruit bearing years. Listed below are the basic parts and its uses: Coconut Husk & Shell - this part of the coconut is soaked in water for up to 10 months, pounded, dried and de-fibered (now by machine). The husk, called "coir" can be used to make ropes. The coconut husk is also used in making doormats, twines, padding material for furniture seats and as padding for ornamental plants like orchids. In manufacturing, the coconut husk is used in making wall boards, filtration pads, carpet underlay, insulation materials and other products. While the dried shell can be used to make handicrafts like: piggy banks, cups, decors and even musical instruments like the Vietnamese Dan Gao and the Chinese Banhu and Yehu. Coco-Lumber - the trunk of old coconut trees that not as productive as before are cut down. The trunk brought to the sawmill and made into coco lumber. This soft wood is much cheaper that the standard "Tangile" lumber that is available in most lumber stores and affords may poor people build their homes at a much lesser cost. Coconut Fruit - the delicious meat of the coconut fruit has many uses, it can be eaten as-is, processed into snacks or sweets or used for cooking (grated & juiced for the coconut milk). While the coconut water is a health drink that not only quenches thirst but also cleanses the kidneys. The coconut water contains: anti-oxidants, sugars, proteins, fiber, vitamins and minerals. The meat is also converted into copra. Copra is either exported or processed domestically into cooking oil. Recent findings also show that coconut oil can be used as a substitute to diesel. Already, coconut oil blended with diesel is being used but new test reveals that coconut biodiesel can be used alone on diesel engines without any modification. Coconut Leaves - even the leaves are not allowed to go to waste. The spine of the leaves are usually used as firewood for cooking while the leaves itself is stripped and turned into brooms or "walis ting-ting". Coconut Roots - are used as toothbrush during the olden times. When pressed the juice of the roots is used as medicine for dysentery. The root coloring can also be used as a dye. X Totally out of focus with my Lensbaby Muse (Double Glass) f/2.8 this "X" appeared out of the branches of the brushwood. I worked on the look and feel with Photoshop and added the grain. I like the bokeh of this lensbaby! To be honest, we had it a lot better than elsewhere from what I've heard. As i finished off a fantastic breakfast and headed out of the village, there was a light mizzle in the air, so refreshing at points that i took off my hood on purpose. It got heavier though. At Wells i took cover on a bench, thinking perhaps it would ease if i left it half an hour. It didn't. It got twice as hard. All credit to the general motoring public - as i made my way along the road joining Wells to Glastonbury they all did their best to avoid the biggest puddles or slow to cut their spray. It was only the odd bus that simply had nowhere to go. The rain had stopped when I returned to the road, and the final hop to Glastonbury was fine. At this point I must raise my hat to the dedication of Martin, Peter and Toby, who decided to drive down from MK to meet for a beer "around 3". The 1000 watt inverter does allow me to run my angle grinder and drill though which is handy. And for thirty years, he was in the company of his holy father, Hazrat Amiral Momeneen Ali (A.S).Taarikh Ahlul Bait; pg. 74&75 After the Shahadat ( martyrdom) of Imam Ali (A.S) in the year 40 A.H, Imam Hasan (A.S) undertook the responsibility of the reins of the government as per the request of the Muslims. Al- Kamil: vol= 2; pg 443 He sent his personnel’s to different cities Murooj - uz - Zahab; vol=3; pg.4 as the Bani Ummayya harboured deep enmity and vendetta against Bani Hashim. They conspired and hatched several plots to snatch the Khilafat from Imam Hassan (A.S) and to take over the control of the Muslim affairs for themselves. Thus, Moawiya sent several spies and secret agents to several cities so as to lay the ground for weakening the government of Imam Hasan (A.S) Al - Fusool - Ul - Mohemma; pg= 161. He prepared an army to assault Iraq Al- Kamil; vol= 2; pg. 445. After being informed of the happenings, Imam Hasan (A.S) sent many warnings to Moawiya. sharh Nahjul Balagah ; vol = 16; pg .31. Then he called the Muslims to prepare themselves in the combat against Moawiya. With a mighty army, he prepared himself for the battle Ibid; pg. 38&39 Before facing the army of Imam Hasan (A.S), Moawiya decided to resort to trick and deceit. On one hand, he falsely implicated Imam Hasan (A.S) and spread the rumour amongst the people about the peace treaty with him sharh Nahjul Balagah ; vol = 16; pg. 42. Moawiya resorted to this trick so as to weaken the morality of the army of Imam (A.S). On the other hand, he resorted to bribery, debauchery and promising big government post, he seduced the top army officers of Imam Hassan (A.S) in to submission. In this way, they joined the ranks of the army of Moawiya one after the other sharh Nahjul Balagah ; vol= 16; pg 22. Disloyalty and treason had penetrated in the army and companions of Imam Hassan (A.S). They devoured his tents, unfastened his button, pulled the carpet from beneath him and slit his thigh leg with a dagger. sharh Nahjul Balagah; vol= 16 pg. 4 ; Moruj Az _ Zahra ; vol = 3 pg 9 Seeing his army resorting to such dubious methods and his companions being in disturbed and agitated mood, Imam Hassan (A.S) thought it advisable that for stopping the disunion and the killing of the Shiahs, he accept the proposal of the peace treaty with Moawiya but with special conditions. As per the writings of Ibne Khalka, the peace treaty was concluded on 25 Rabiul Awwal 41 A.H. wafyat - ul - Ayat; vol= 2 pg. 66. The most important conditions of the peace treaty were: 1. Moawiya would not call himself as Amir - ul - Momeneen ( leader of the Believers) Alal -us - sharai pg 212 ; Tazkerat - Khawas pg 206 2. From thene onwards, Imam Ali (A,S) would not be cursed or abused in bad language Al - Ibhadi vol2; pg 14. 3. The life, wealth and chastity of the female members of shiahs would be secured and protected. 4. All the rights and privileges of the Shiahs would be granted to them.Al - Irshad; vol 2 pg 14 5. Moawiya would not appoint anybody as his successor Insabul Ashraf; vol 3 pg 42 As can be seen from the conditions of the peace treaty, Imam Hassan (A.S) while showing Moawiya as a usurper and tyrant allayed the flames of disunity; saved the Islamic society from total annihilation and safeguarded the rights of the Shiahs. It can be rightly said that the biggest achievement of the peace treaty was the discernment of the truth from falsehood. Neither truth could be introduced as lowliness and abject nor falsehood could be pretended to be right. The holy Imam, through his behaviors and action made the people realize that Moawiya is the pillar of falsehood, deceit and treachery while the right of khilafat belonged to the true Awsiya of the Holy Prophet of Islam (saww). They do not want to rule over the people by resorting to force, bribery and deceit. The same matter was pursued during the events of Kerbala. After the signing of the peace treaty, some of the people found fault with this important and wise work of Imam Hassan (A.S). They slandered him and used abusive language against his holy personality. Tohaful Oqool ; pg 308 It was as if they had ignored his divine gifted position and unmistakable personality. In their reply , Imam Hassan (A.S) said; “Am I not the Hujat of the Almighty, being his remembrance upon his creatures. Did not the Holy Prophet of Islam (S.A) said, “Hassan and Hussain are two Imams, whether they are sitting or standing? If Is it my soul that calls me by my name? 255/365 It is my soul that calls upon my name: How silver-sweet sound lovers' tongues by night, Like softest music to attending ears! I've been trying to play more with lights & shadows. Hopefully I'm getting better. =) I stayed up til 7am reading last night, so I didn’t get up til quite late. I remember my Dad coming up a few times to get me up, & he told me it was lightly snowing. Then at 3.30pm he came in again & told me to get up. My Mom came in & sat on my bed & brought Benny with her, so I stroked him for a while as I woke up. Then my Dad said I should get up & look at the snow because the sun (as it was getting closer to setting!) was making it look really pretty. So I did, & then I took my book downstairs & read. I made some toast later, & had some sherbet lemons. I basically read until it was time to watch David Tennant’s last episode of Doctor Who, at 6.30pm. My Dad had to start cooking dinner then, so my brother & I watched it in the kitchen with him. My brother & I were distinctly unimpressed with the first half of the episode, & my Dad said (jokingly) that we were being unnecessarily critical & that if we didn’t stop it we would have to leave. But seriously – the time lords & that crazy lady? That was just tacky. & the green people. & then that assembly room with the time lords was like something out of Star Wars. & the spaceship battle scene was like a bad bit from Star Wars, I mean, come on. I expect better. But then, after the time lords are gone (I really saw them as quite pointless) & DW was realising he was alive, I just knew what was going to happen. & then Bernard Cribbins knocked on the glass, & my heart melted. & I started crying during that scene. I think Wilf is a wonderful character. I was just so sad. The tears were rolling. & then when he was saying goodbye to all the characters . . . *sniff*. & when he said “I don’t want to go.” Well, that just had me in tears again. I was wrapped in my blanket (my brother was in the chair next to me, sharing it) & Emmy was on my knee, & I just held onto the blanket & cried. It was so sad. & I think Matt Smith pulled an unfortunate face when he was regenerating. & I was upset to find that his catchphrase was “Geronimo”. DT’s catchphrase was much better. But anyway, it was a sad episode. & the second half made up for the shocking first bit. We had dinner after that (quorn & dumplings) & then I read my Mom’s manifesto that she’s writing, before she & my Dad went to work on it, & I watched part of DW: Confidential. & totally cried again at the ending. We watched Big Fat Quiz of the Year, & I drew with my Dad. (17 points, 17 points, 14 points). My Mom was annoyed to lose, but I didn’t even bother including Hugh in the quiz, as I knew how few he’d get. That should have made her feel better. We ate Pringles & sherbet lemons, & my Mom had some of my Roses, while we watched. Then we all headed up. My parents are watching TV, Hugh is playing his game, & I am checking flickr, & finishing reading the last True Blood book I have. ---- Edit: At about 4am I wanted to take a shower. There was a big spider in the shower. I freaked out, & told my brother that if he would move it for me I wouldn't tell my Mom about something I had on him. I asked nicely at first, but he wouldn't, so then I resorted to blackmail. & so we tried to get it. We put a glass over it, & then I went to get a piece of paper to slide under it. Unfortunately the spider got out & ran to hide behind the shampoo bottles. So Hugh removed all the shampoo bottles & tried to get it. I did think at one point it would be easier to just stamp on it & kill it, but I am really not about the killing. I just wanted it outside. When the spider ran towards us we both freaked & I ran out of the room, with my brother running after me. He screamed like a girl. It was hilarious. So, we crept back into the room, & the spider was on the carpet at this point. It eventually went & crawled behind the bath, & I had an amazingly quick shower.
