Cleaning Teeth With Hydrogen Peroxide

cleaning teeth with hydrogen peroxide

    hydrogen peroxide
  • a viscous liquid with strong oxidizing properties; a powerful bleaching agent; also used (in aqueous solutions) as a mild disinfectant and (in strong concentrations) as an oxidant in rocket fuels

  • A colorless, viscous, unstable liquid with strong oxidizing properties, commonly used in diluted form in disinfectants and bleaches

  • Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a very pale blue liquid, slightly more viscous than water, that appears colorless in dilute solution. It has strong oxidizing properties, and is a powerful bleaching agent. It is used as a disinfectant, antiseptic, oxidizer, and in rocketry as a propellant.

  • A colourless liquid, H2O2, soluble in water, used as a mild antiseptic, bleaching agent (especially for bleaching hair), oxidizing agent and chemical reagent

    cleaning
  • (clean) free from dirt or impurities; or having clean habits; "children with clean shining faces"; "clean white shirts"; "clean dishes"; "a spotlessly clean house"; "cats are clean animals"

  • make clean by removing dirt, filth, or unwanted substances from; "Clean the stove!"; "The dentist cleaned my teeth"

  • Remove the innards of (fish or poultry) prior to cooking

  • Make (something or someone) free of dirt, marks, or mess, esp. by washing, wiping, or brushing

  • the act of making something clean; "he gave his shoes a good cleaning"

    teeth
  • Each of a set of hard, bony enamel-coated structures in the jaws of most vertebrates, used for biting and chewing

  • An appetite or liking for a particular thing

  • dentition: the kind and number and arrangement of teeth (collectively) in a person or animal

  • A similar hard, pointed structure in invertebrate animals, typically functioning in the mechanical breakdown of food

  • (tooth) hard bonelike structures in the jaws of vertebrates; used for biting and chewing or for attack and defense

  • (tooth) something resembling the tooth of an animal

A Practical Guide to Hydrogen Peroxide (Safe and Sane Uses for this Valuable Household Solution)

What exactly is hydrogen peroxide, and why should you care? Well, there has been so much

misinformation scattered around these days about the miraculous uses for hydrogen peroxide that I

thought I’d write this brief little book to try to set the record straight about what it can and cannot do.

Here are a few chapters:

COMMON USES FOR HP
Toothbrushes
Removing Bloodstains
Ear Wax
Teeth Whitening
Mouthwash
Contact Lenses
Chlorine Replacement
Septic System
Hair Lightener
Cleaning Vegetables
Garden
DO NOT USE HP FOR THIS!
Wound Treatment
Nasal spray:
Vaginal cleansing
Soaking Any Body Part
Cancer, AIDS,
THE POSSIBLE DANGERS OF HP

Beaver Skull (1)

Beaver Skull (1)

Skull from an American Beaver, Castor canadensis. The European beaver, which is larger, and this species are the only extant members of their family (Castoridae), but their next closest living relatives are squirrels - makes sense after seeing those huge teeth! This entire skull is about 6 inches, or 14 cm, long - and very tall and wide, as well. Impressive for a rodent! After the European beaver and Capybara, it's the 3rd-largest extant rodent.

During my last sampling trip, my mom found a partially mummified beaver laying on the creek bank. Since they're not a common animal, I didn't want it to go to waste, especially since the skeleton was complete. I had a bit of a tough time relieving the remains of this skull, and hung it up outside awhile to dry off more. Then a few rounds of soaking and scrubbing with hydrogen peroxide and hot water to get off the small remaining bits of flesh. I did do one short hot bleach soaking to sanitize it more, but too much bleach makes bones brittle, I've read. Once it was pretty well cleaned off, I boiled it in a junk pot I found and brought home for just such a project, and then put a coat of clear spraypaint on every surface of every piece for sanitary reasons. The teeth were all glued in place with epoxy (except for the exemplary removable incisors, shown out), as was the broken lower jaw symphysis. Those two incisors were what really got my attention about this skull - they slide into long sheaths, but are incredibly long! The ear bones are also very interesting, as they're somewhat loose in the skull and project upwards (their ears are on the top of the head).

Nikkor 60 macro, SB-600 bounced from ceiling and mixed with ambient light (longer exposure, on tripod).

July 12, 2010
I have a broken back tooth, and I don't have dental coverage (or any health insurance for that matter), so I've been rinsing with peroxide to keep it clean in there. =/
Sam starts her new job soon, so hopefully we'll be able to get hitched, and I can go to the dentist.
