Giant White Moonflower 20 Seeds/Seed Ipomoea alba

The moonflower is a vigorous twining vine that is very fast growing in really hot weather. It is a tender tropical perennial but is now seeing popular use as an annual vine in colder areas. This close relative of the morning glory has similar heart shaped leaves that are a rich green and 4-8 (10-20 cm) inches long. They provide a beautiful backdrop for the spectacular moonflowers. This vine also known as the evening glory as its buds open in late afternoon and last only until morning's light transforms them into a limp shriveled mass.

Iris foetidissima ex. Eastbourne, UK - seed cross-section Calandstr, Leiden, NL 3 Dec 2010 02 Leo

On Seeds: I was intensely confused by these seeds. I thought they were berries contained in fruit, which does sound silly when you think about it! The confusing part is the two-layered fleshy tissue covering the seed-coat, in this case called a 'sarcotesta'.

The big green pod these things develop in is the actual fruit; a compound, dehiscent, capsular fruit composed of three connate locules. The locules develop from the three fused carpels/ovaries of the flowers. The seeds develop from the individual ovules. The outer layer of the ovule, the integument (monocots have 1 integument) develops into the seed-coat, which is the hard inner part of the thing in the centre of my picture.

In the genus Iris, many species have developed arils -fleshy appendages which, like fruit, function to encourage animal dispersal ('zoochory'?, not really endozoochory; perhaps 'psuedo-endozoochory'?). An aril may derive from a number of different tissues; in the genus Iris it may derive from either 1.)

Uniquely in Iris foetidissima and only one other member of the Iridaceae, Neomarica variabilis, the aril has enclosed the entire seed, so that actually the seed has a seed-coat which doubles back on itself; in these two cases the fleshy layer surrounding the seed is called the 'sarcotesta'.

Considering its natural habitat, tucked away under scrub and hedgerows, this bright colour in the late autumn peeking out from under the leafless branches looks very enticing. The bright red colour and size of the berry is a typical symptom of bird dispersal, and birds are indeed tempted to grab one. In actuality, this plant is a trickster; the berries are a poor forage, and birds generally drop them to the ground soon afterwards without ingesting them, often after they have perched on a safe branch, above more scrub. Plants generally loose their berries at a slow rate; it may be that birds learn to ignore them, or that certain species have realised that they are being duped!

Thank you Sonnia for pointing out my BS!

The Peach Keeper: A Novel

The New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Chased the Moon welcomes you to her newest locale: Walls of Water, North Carolina, where the secrets are thicker than the fog from the town’s famous waterfalls, and the stuff of superstition is just as real as you want it to be.

It’s the dubious distinction of thirty-year-old Willa Jackson to hail from a fine old Southern family of means that met with financial ruin generations ago. The Blue Ridge Madam—built by Willa’s great-great-grandfather during Walls of Water’s heyday, and once the town’s grandest home—has stood for years as a lonely monument to misfortune and scandal. And Willa herself has long strived to build a life beyond the brooding Jackson family shadow. No easy task in a town shaped by years of tradition and the well-marked boundaries of the haves and have-nots.

But Willa has lately learned that an old classmate—socialite do-gooder Paxton Osgood—of the very prominent Osgood family, has restored the Blue Ridge Madam to her former glory, with plans to open a top-flight inn. Maybe, at last, the troubled past can be laid to rest while something new and wonderful rises from its ashes. But what rises instead is a skeleton, found buried beneath the property’s lone peach tree, and certain to drag up dire consequences along with it.

For the bones—those of charismatic traveling salesman Tucker Devlin, who worked his dark charms on Walls of Water seventy-five years ago—are not all that lay hidden out of sight and mind. Long-kept secrets surrounding the troubling remains have also come to light, seemingly heralded by a spate of sudden strange occurrences throughout the town.

Now, thrust together in an unlikely friendship, united by a full-blooded mystery, Willa and Paxton must confront the dangerous passions and tragic betrayals that once bound their families—and uncover truths of the long-dead that have transcended time and defied the grave to touch the hearts and souls of the living.

Resonant with insight into the deep and lasting power of friendship, love, and tradition, The Peach Keeper is a portrait of the unshakable bonds that—in good times and bad, from one generation to the next—endure forever.

A Letter from Author Sarah Addison Allen

She put a penny on her windowsill and cracked the window, because her grandmother once said that ghosts often forget they’re ghosts and will go after money, but if they get close enough to an open window, the night air will suck them out.
--Chapter Eight, The Peach Keeper
The original title of The Peach Keeper was God Eats Peaches, which I took from the old saying, “When God eats peaches, He saves the pit.” I had a cousin who would never throw away a peach pit based on that saying. She thought it was bad luck. My family is full of strange Southern superstitions. My great-aunt never liked for company to come in through one door and leave through another because she said that meant the preacher would visit.
How many of us grew up seeing our mothers throw a pinch of salt over their shoulders when salt was spilled? How many of us remember when our grandmothers whispered that a bird tapping on a window meant someone was going to die? We took these things on trembling faith as children, believing them to be real because everything was real back then. Everything had possibilities. So how do we explain, with our skeptical grown-up natures, why we still make an X in the air when a black cat passes. Why we still have to eat something in the morning before we will tell someone about our bad dreams. Why we still worry about umbrellas being opened indoors.
What is it about superstitions that stay with us, that encourage us to pass them on? Flights of fancy, maybe. Or nostalgia. Or maybe the power of the unknown is just that strong. We can’t help but think: What if it’s true? What if it just might be true? So we take an ounce of prevention instead of a pound of cure. We knock on wood and avoid ladders and never break mirrors. Just in case.

New York at Twilight, Feb 2010 - 06

New York at Twilight, Feb 2010 - 06

This photo doesn't look like it has much to do with "twilight," but technically it follows the rules: it was taken right at sunset, on a dark, gloomy, cloudy day. I was curious to see how much color I could capture, with just natural light coming in through the windows...

It's probably worth mentioning that the photo is a 5-image HDR composite; however, I didn't do any saturation or other adjustments of the resulting colors.

****************************************

I've signed up for a photo workshop called "New York at Twilight" at the International Center of Photography next month, and we were given this assignment to be carried out before the class starts:

"Please take 20 to 40 photographs – choose from a variety of subjects – people, self-portraits, your home, a car, cityscape – at twilight, dawn or when it’s completely dark. Bring 4”x6” prints or JPEGS on a flash drive or CD to class so we can see them. It’s good to select your best 10-15 photographs to show during the first class."

I'm not sure what I'll end up with for the assignment, but I thought I would include a few post-sunset, twilight views of the NYC skyline. I'll add more to this set as ideas come to me...

A Passion for Flowers

Nothing lights up a room like flowers. Whether it's baby's breath draped on a table at a wedding reception, clusters of daffodils in small pots scattered throughout a living room or a bucket of sunflowers on a picnic table, a strategically placed bouquet has the power to create a mood and make us feel special. Unfortunately, most of us don't know how to display flowers properly, and they often end up clumsily thrown together in a vase.
In A Passion for Flowers, Carolyne Roehm teaches readers how to create arrangements that set off a flower's natural beauty. She discusses the overall features of dozens of the most popular flowers and helps readers understand how these elements relate to each other. Though the book is filled with ideas for brightening holidays and special occasions, Roehm stresses that the magic of flowers should be enjoyed year-round. Organized by season to profile the blossoms as they come into their glory, bouquet "recipes" with step-by-step instructions are sprinkled throughout along with special care instructions for more sensitive blooms. Sections detailing containers, conditioning flowers and elements of floral design are included at the end of the book. A Passion for Flowers features 250 breathtaking photographs and is a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration that will help readers stop and smell the roses every day.

white v-neck shirt = thrifted/gap
tan pants = wore earlier, thrifted/moms?
red flats = payless

So I went to a family Christmas party today, and I took my dolls because I thought that I would be SO bored and would have nothing to do, so I might as well take a few pics. When I got there I discovered that my cousin(at least that's what I think she is..) also has pullips, she saw Neeki at my Aunt's wedding a long time ago, and so now she has two, a Nina and a Celsiy, named Nina and Chelsea. I had to take these pics with her camera using my card because my camera was dead.. I had so much fun!

I have also had my mind changed about Nina, I never liked her, but now that I've seen her in person I think she's gorgeous!

Assignment: PCA71 – Transformation
Deadline: Sunday, July 12, 2009 (2 weeks)
Image Tag: pca71
From: Anthony J.T.

Mission

According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, the general definition of transformation is "to change in composition or structure; to change the outward form or appearance of; to change in character or condition".

I think the process of representing this photographically is challenging, because the world around us is in a constant state of change or transformation. In my opinion, the most effective images move not only the subject, but the viewer, from one place to a new one (a "transformation" of sorts) evoking thoughts of how change effects the subject of the photo, the world around us, and the viewer him or herself.

The goal of this assignment is to create a work that embodies the idea of transformation - how you see it, what it means to you as a person and as a photographer. As the examples illustrate below, I believe you can have success showing transformation in a concrete or metaphysical way. Go with what you know! Submissions SOOC to Photoshop creations are perfectly acceptable.

WIT
A macro, manual focus shot of a geranium pratense going to seed. I looked at the colour version and decided that a b&w version would/might be more appropriate for the 'transformation' theme of this assignment.
The key to this image is the fact that nothing beats nature for constant transformations. Just as we get into real summer, these geraniums (wild, seeded flowers) are already forming seed heads. They've given pollen to the bees and other insects around and are now storing all their goodness up in the seed pods, ready to 'ping' them into the air and for other plants to come up next year.
I took the b&w conversion and applied an inverse of the result, to concentrate on the form, lines and shapes and not just the solitary flower above and the new seed pods beneath.
exif
Camera: Canon PowerShot G10
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 6.1 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

This was challenging on all fronts! I decided late on to try out my hand at macro shots. This will be on-going, since I was lazy and didn't get the tripod out. lol!
Always changing nature, the biggest transformer we have.

Shy on Rebun-cho. Cypripedium macranthos (Large-flowered Lady Slipper), Rebun-cho, Hokkaido, Japan

"There is a handsome Japanese Cypripedium in cultivation whose correct name has been the subject of much uncertainty...", writes Robert Allen Rolfe in 1911. Rolfe (1855-1921) - a shy and retring autodidact working at the famous Kew Gardens in England - then proceeds to give an exciting account of the collection and description of this pretty orchid down from the late eighteenth century.
Our Lady (= in this case Aphrodite or Venus) Slipper with this beautiful Large flower is found in northern Japan, Russia, Korea and China, and also in parts of the Ukraine. I saw it in the Spring as I was traipsing about on the small and wonderful but remote island of Rebun to the very north-west of Hokkaido. There was a lot of rain and mist, but just as I chanced upon this blossom shying away in its bright greenery, a thin ray of sunlight lightened it up. The light to me seemed akin to that in which Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) pictured Venus modestly issuing from a Cypriot Sea Scallop (1485). She's not wearing slippers on her dainty feet...

The evening primroses are having a particularly good year in the Capitol Reef area.

When I took this picture I was looking for a 'scene' rather than just a picture of a plant, that's why I didn't open up the f stop all the way to completely blur the background or crop it closer. Leaving the plant on the right with the deeper background behind it seems to give the picture almost a 3D effect that you don't get without it. It does look a little odd until you look at the whole scene.

Please take a second to look at this picture in the large size - it really doesn't work any smaller than that. (Just click on All Sizes above the picture)

Pity the Nation: The Abduction of Lebanon (Nation Books)

Pity the Nation: The Abduction of Lebanon (Nation Books)

With the Israeli-Palestinian crisis reaching wartime levels, where is the latest confrontation between these two old foes leading? Robert Fisk's explosive Pity the Nation recounts Sharon and Arafat's first deadly encounter in Lebanon in the early 1980s and explains why the Israel–Palestine relationship seems so intractable. A remarkable combination of war reporting and analysis by an author who has witnessed the carnage of Beirut for twenty-five years, Fisk, the first journalist to whom bin Laden announced his jihad against the U.S., is one of the world's most fearless and honored foreign correspondents. He spares no one in this saga of the civil war and subsequent Israeli invasion: the PLO, whose thuggish behavior alienated most Lebanese; the various Lebanese factions, whose appalling brutality spared no one; the Syrians, who supported first the Christians and then the Muslims in their attempt to control Lebanon; and the Israelis, who tried to install their own puppets and, with their 1982 invasion, committed massive war crimes of their own. It includes a moving finale that recounts the travails of Fisk's friend Terry Anderson who was kidnapped by Hezbollah and spent 2,454 days in captivity. Fully updated to include the Israeli withdrawl from south Lebanon and Ariel Sharon's electoral victory over Ehud Barak, this edition has sixty pages of new material and a new preface. "Robert Fisk's enormous book about Lebanon's desperate travails is one of the most distinguished in recent times."—Edward Said

Under The Bombs

During a cease-fire in the Lebanon-Israel conflict of 2006, a Christian taxi driver brings an untraditional Shiite woman from Beirut to the heart of the conflict in the country s south. While they scour the rubble of local towns for her son, who was sent to live with her traditional family while she was staying with her husband in Dubai, they discover that despite their very different backgrounds they have much in common. And during their trip through the desolate countryside, the two travelers develop a deep bond as a response to the death striking all around them. The film was shot entirely on location during the summer of 2006, in the middle of the ruins of war-torn Lebanon. Aractingi only hired two professional actors, the rest are real refugees, journalists, soldiers, etc..., playing themselves.

The Longest Day [Blu-ray]

The Longest Day [Blu-ray]

This special collector's commemorative edition has been issued in honor of the June 6, 1944 Allied invasion of France, which marked the beginning of the end of Nazi domination over Europe. The attack involved 3,000,000 men, 11,000 planes and 4,000 ships, comprising the largest armada the world has ever seen.
The Longest Day is a vivid, hour-by-hour recreation of this historic event. Featuring a stellar international cast, and told from the perspectives of both sides, it is a fascinating look at the massive preparations, mistakes, and random events that determined the outcome of one of the biggest battles in history. Winner of two 1962 OscarsA(r) (Special Effects and Cinematography), The Longest Day ranks as one of Hollywood's truly great war films.

The Longest Day is Hollywood's definitive D-day movie. More modern accounts such as Saving Private Ryan are more vividly realistic, but producer Darryl F. Zanuck's epic 1962 account is the only one to attempt the daunting task of covering that fateful day from all perspectives. From the German high command and front-line officers to the French Resistance and all the key Allied participants, the screenplay by Cornelius Ryan, based on his own authoritative book, is as factually accurate as possible. The endless parade of stars (John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Sean Connery, and Richard Burton, to name a few) makes for an uneasy mix of verisimilitude and Hollywood star-power, however, and the film falls a little flat for too much of its three-hour running time. But the set-piece battles are still spectacular, and if the landings on Omaha Beach lack the graphic gore of Private Ryan they nonetheless show the sheer scale and audacity of the invasion. --Mark Walker

Catharanthus flowers

Catharanthus flowers

In the Spiny Desert between Fort Dauphin and Amboasary. I'm not sure which species this is. I was told it might be Catharanthus roseus, but the petals seem narrower than the type if it is.

From Wikipedia -
Catharanthus (Madagascar Periwinkle) is a genus of eight species of herbaceous perennial plants, seven endemic to the island of Madagascar, the eighth native to the Indian subcontinent in southern Asia. Catharanthus roseus goes by its common name "sadaphuli" (perennially flowering) in parts of Western India. The genus is a member of the family Apocynaceae.

Catharanthus coriaceus Markgr. Madagascar.
Catharanthus lanceus (Bojer ex A.DC.) Pichon. Madagascar.
Catharanthus longifolius (Pichon) Pichon. Madagascar.
Catharanthus ovalis Markgr. Madagascar.
Catharanthus pusillus (Murray) G.Don. Indian subcontinent.
Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don. Madagascar (formerly known as Vinca rosea).
Catharanthus scitulus (Pichon) Pichon. Madagascar.
Catharanthus trichophyllus (Baker) Pichon. Madagascar.

The species are self-propagating from seed; the seeds require a period of total darkness to germinate. Cuttings from mature plants will also root readily.

One species, C. roseus, has been widely cultivated and introduced, becoming an invasive species in some areas.

Catharanthus roseus has gained interest from the pharmaceutical industry; the alkaloids vincristine and vinblastine from its sap have been shown to be an effective treatment for leukaemia and lymphoma. Although the sap is poisonous if ingested, some 70 useful alkaloids have been identified from it. In Madagascar, extracts have been used for hundreds of years in herbal medicine for the treatment of diabetes, as hemostatics and tranquilizers, to lower blood pressure, and as disinfectants. The extracts are not without their side effects, however, which include hair loss.

Vinca alkaloids are anti-mitotic and anti-microtubule agents. They are now produced synthetically and used as drugs in cancer therapy and as immunosuppressive drugs. These compounds are vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine and vinorelbine. Periwinkle extracts and derivatives, such as vinpocetine, are also used as nootropic drugs.

Catharanthus lanceus contains up to 6% yohimbine in its leaves.

Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar Periwinkle) is a species of Catharanthus native and endemic to Madagascar. Synonyms include Vinca rosea (the basionym), Ammocallis rosea, and Lochnera rosea; other English names occasionally used include Cape Periwinkle, Rose Periwinkle, Rosy Periwinkle, and "Old-maid".

In the wild, it is an endangered plant; the main cause of decline is habitat destruction by slash and burn agriculture. It is also however widely cultivated and is naturalised in subtropical and tropical areas of the world.

It is an evergreen subshrub or herbaceous plant growing to 1 m tall. The leaves are oval to oblong, 2.5–9 cm long and 1–3.5 cm broad, glossy green, hairless, with a pale midrib and a short petiole 1–1.8 cm long; they are arranged in opposite pairs. The flowers are white to dark pink with a darker red centre, with a basal tube 2.5-3 cm long and a corolla 2–5 cm diameter with five petal-like lobes. The fruit is a pair of follicles 2–4 cm long and 3 mm broad.

The species has long been cultivated for herbal medicine and as an ornamental plant. In traditional Chinese medicine, extracts from it have been used to treat numerous diseases, including diabetes, malaria, and Hodgkin's disease. The substances vinblastine and vincristine extracted from the plant are used in the treatment of leukemia.

This conflict between historical indigenous use, and recent patents on C.roseus-derived drugs by western pharmaceutical companies, without compensation, has led to accusations of biopiracy.

It can be dangerous if consumed orally. It can be hallucinogenic, and is cited (under its synonym Vinca rosea) in Louisiana State Act 159.

As an ornamental plant, it is appreciated for its hardiness in dry and nutritionally deficient conditions, popular in subtropical gardens where temperatures never fall below 5 °C to 7 °C, and as a warm-season bedding plant in temperate gardens. It is noted for its long flowering period, throughout the year in tropical conditions, and from spring to late autumn in warm temperate climates. Full sun and well-drained soil are preferred. Numerous cultivars have been selected, for variation in flower colour (white, mauve, peach, scarlet and reddish-orange), and also for tolerance of cooler growing conditions in temperate regions. Notable cultivars include 'Albus' (white flowers), 'Grape Cooler' (rose-pink; cool-tolerant), the Ocellatus Group (various colours), and 'Peppermint Cooler' (white with a red centre; cool-tolerant).

C. roseus is used in plant pathology as an experimental host for phytoplasmas. This is because it is easy to infect with a large majority of phytoplasmas, and also often has very distinctive symptoms such as phyllody and significantly reduced

Long tubular red flower with luxuriant spotted golden throat... Gloxinia sylvatica or Bolivian Sunset

Long tubular red flower with luxuriant spotted golden throat... Gloxinia sylvatica or Bolivian Sunset

These tiny blossoms are a surprise... so bright, so vibrant and exciting!

From the eastern slope of the Bolivian Andes and southwestern Brazil. Blooms primarily in winter and spring. Bright filtered light. Leaves are elliptic, 3-4 inches long, dark green and roughly hairy. Episcia cupreata is an extremely popular species of the genus Episcia, grown for its dazzling variegated foliage. It is a herbaceous evergreen perennial that is low-growing and has a stoloniferous habit with succulent and hairy stems. It reaches a height of about 22-30 cm and with a creeping growth habit, it can spread as far as 60 cm or more on ground. From the leaf axils, it produces a stolon or runner with a new plant sprouting at its tip and by reproducing repeatedly in this manner, rooting readily wherever it touches bare soil, it can easily cover a wide area. Planted in a hanging basket or raised planters, the trailing stolons, heavy with a continuous supply of new plants at the nodes at various intervals, will hang downwards in a dramatic cascading form.

Both Check Mate and Bolivian Sunset are members of the Gesnericeae Family which includes houseplants such as gloxinias and African violets. Leaves are simple, often fleshy and hairy, often with purple coloration. Flowers are bell-shaped or tubular with 5 fused petals, the lower 2 lobes more or less differentiated into a lip. The fruit is a dry capsule or occasionally a berry

All the Devils Are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis

All the Devils Are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis

The New York Times bestseller hailed as the best business book of 2010" (Huffington Post).
As soon as the financial crisis erupted, the finger-pointing began. Should the blame fall on Wall Street, Main Street, or Pennsylvania Avenue? On greedy traders, misguided regulators, sleazy subprime companies, cowardly legislators, or clueless home buyers?
According to Bethany McLean and Joe Nocera, two of America's most acclaimed business journalists, the real answer is all of the above-and more. Many devils helped bring hell to the economy. And the full story, in all of its complexity and detail, is like the legend of the blind men and the elephant. Almost everyone has missed the big picture. Almost no one has put all the pieces together.
All the Devils Are Here goes back several decades to weave the hidden history of the financial crisis in a way no previous book has done. It explores the motivations of everyone from famous CEOs, cabinet secretaries, and politicians to anonymous lenders, borrowers, analysts, and Wall Street traders. It delves into the powerful American mythology of homeownership. And it proves that the crisis ultimately wasn't about finance at all; it was about human nature.

Jorinda and Joringel

Jorinda and Joringel

OK, I've found the pearl in the flower, now where's the bewitched fraulein?

"There was once an old castle in the midst of a large and dense forest, and in it an old woman who was a witch dwelt all alone. In the day-time she changed herself into a cat or a screech-owl, but in the evening she took her proper shape again as a human being. She could lure wild beasts and birds to her, and then she killed and boiled and roasted them. If anyone came within one hundred paces of the castle he was obliged to stand still, and could not stir from the place until she bade him be free. But whenever an innocent maiden came within this circle, she changed her into a bird, and shut her up in a wicker-work cage, and carried the cage into a room in the castle. She had about seven thousand cages of rare birds in the castle.

Now, there was once a maiden who was called Jorinda, who was fairer than all other girls. She and a handsome youth named Joringel had promised to marry each other. They were still in the days of betrothal, and their greatest happiness was being together. One day in order that they might be able to talk together in peace they went for a walk in the forest.

"Take care," said Joringel, "that you do not go too near the castle."

It was a beautiful evening. The sun shone brightly between the trunks of the trees into the dark green of the forest, and the turtle-doves sang mournfully upon the beech trees.

Jorinda wept now and then. She sat down in the sunshine and was sorrowful. Joringel was sorrowful too. They were as sad as if they were about to die. Then they looked around them, and were quite at a loss, for they did not know by which way they should go home. The sun was still half above the mountain and half under. Joringel looked through the bushes, and saw the old walls of the castle close at hand. He was horror-stricken and filled with deadly fear. Jorinda was singing,

"My little bird, with the necklace red,
Sings sorrow, sorrow, sorrow,
He sings that the dove must soon be dead,
Sings sorrow, sor - jug, jug, jug."

Joringel looked for Jorinda. She was changed into a nightingale, and sang, jug, jug, jug. A screech-owl with glowing eyes flew three times round about her, and three times cried, to-whoo, to-whoo, to-whoo.

Joringel could not move. He stood there like a stone, and could neither weep nor speak, nor move hand or foot. The sun had now set. The owl flew into the thicket, and directly afterwards there came out of it a crooked old woman, yellow and lean, with large red eyes and a hooked nose, the point of which reached to her chin. She muttered to herself, caught the nightingale, and took it away in her hand. Joringel could neither speak nor move from the spot. The nightingale was gone.

At last the woman came back, and said in a hollow voice, "Greet you, Zachiel. If the moon shines on the cage, Zachiel, let him loose at once."

Then Joringel was freed. He fell on his knees before the woman and begged that she would give him back his Jorinda, but she said that he should never have her again, and went away. He called, he wept, he lamented, but all in vain, "Hooh, what is to become of me?"

Joringel went away, and at last came to a strange village, where he kept big white friendly goats for a long time and painted pictures of them. The villagers were very grateful to him because the goats had kept escaping and eating all their ornamental shrubs. He often walked round and round the castle, but not too near to it. At last he dreamt one night that he found a golden-yellow flower, in the middle of which was a beautiful large pearl, that he picked the flower and went with it to the castle, and that everything he touched with the flower was freed from enchantment. He also dreamt that by means of it he recovered his Jorinda. In the morning, when he awoke, he began to seek over hill and dale for such a flower. He sought until the ninth day, and then, early in the morning, he found the golden-yellow flower. In the middle of it there was a large dew-drop, as big as the finest pearl.

Day and night he journeyed with this flower to the castle. When he was within a hundred paces of it he was not held fast, but walked on to the door. Joringel was full of joy. He touched the door with the flower, and it sprang open. He walked in through the courtyard, and listened for the sound of the birds. At last he heard it. He went on and found the room from whence it came, and there the witch was feeding the birds in the seven thousand cages.

When she saw Joringel she was angry, very angry, and scolded and spat poison and gall at him, but she could not come within two paces of him. He did not take any notice of her, but went and looked at the cages with the birds. But there were many hundred nightingales, how was he to find his Jorinda again. Just then he saw the old woman quietly t

CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME!?!?!?!

CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME!?!?!?!

Kanazawa's 21st Century Art Museum, or ??21????? if you want to be fancy about it, is a large, thick, glass and steel wheel lying down in a field of grass in the middle of the pouring sunlight. As I biked past it in the morning I saw a flock of shiny metal chairs loitering around the grounds, each about the shape of an oversized grammaphone horn with its tip buried in the earth. The chairs glinting and shining in the bright morning sun, you begin to think "how dumb! of COURSE no one's sitting in your dumb modern artsy chairs outside the museum because they're probably each a hundred thousand degrees by now from being outside and made of shiny metal!" Modern arts! Feh!

But as with many of my silly expectations about this trip, I was proved wrong. They aren't like chairs at all; in fact, they WERE more like grammaphone bells: what you see is the opening of a long, long metal tube that runs underground from where it looks like it's planted and finds itself eventually at another similar mouthpiece somewhere else on the grounds. And then you can talk to people! Like super, super far away to where the people you can talk to can't see you at all! You can talk to strangers, which can be difficult, or you can talk to the five year old daughter of the metal talky flower next to yours, like I did. The horns all look the same, but they all have very different designs on the cover inside of it, and that's what you're looking at now. Good times, had by all.
