Assignment: PCA71 – Transformation
Deadline: Sunday, July 12, 2009 (2 weeks)
Image Tag: pca71
From: Anthony J.T.
Mission
According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, the general definition of transformation is "to change in composition or structure; to change the outward form or appearance of; to change in character or condition".
I think the process of representing this photographically is challenging, because the world around us is in a constant state of change or transformation. In my opinion, the most effective images move not only the subject, but the viewer, from one place to a new one (a "transformation" of sorts) evoking thoughts of how change effects the subject of the photo, the world around us, and the viewer him or herself.
The goal of this assignment is to create a work that embodies the idea of transformation - how you see it, what it means to you as a person and as a photographer. As the examples illustrate below, I believe you can have success showing transformation in a concrete or metaphysical way. Go with what you know! Submissions SOOC to Photoshop creations are perfectly acceptable.
WIT
A macro, manual focus shot of a geranium pratense going to seed. I looked at the colour version and decided that a b&w version would/might be more appropriate for the 'transformation' theme of this assignment.
The key to this image is the fact that nothing beats nature for constant transformations. Just as we get into real summer, these geraniums (wild, seeded flowers) are already forming seed heads. They've given pollen to the bees and other insects around and are now storing all their goodness up in the seed pods, ready to 'ping' them into the air and for other plants to come up next year.
I took the b&w conversion and applied an inverse of the result, to concentrate on the form, lines and shapes and not just the solitary flower above and the new seed pods beneath.

This was challenging on all fronts! I decided late on to try out my hand at macro shots. This will be on-going, since I was lazy and didn't get the tripod out. lol!
Always changing nature, the biggest transformer we have.

The Mysterious Plant - july 09
Grown from seeds from Monet's garden, France - now growing in a pot in West Sussex, UK. No-one seems to know what it is. Apparently it has blue flowers. I will post pictures of them as and when they appear.
