"Mommy, I made 'hi'!" She did this all on here own and was so excited. It started when she found the cut cable tie that I dropped when taking down the Christmas lights. She would flip it over and over saying "Look it's an 'h'. Look it's a 'y'..." Then she had this obvious lightbulb moment and she realized that with that 'h' she could spell one of her reading 'sight words'. This was made possible by the "Your Baby Can Read" program which she had been doing for a few weeks.

This was on the back of our new baby's hospital chart. It shows age in hours versus her jaundice meter reading, the lines represent different risk levels. The nurse's can use this to help them determine if the babies are jaundiced or not.

Idea: Have students fit equations that match the curves on the graph, then create an ms excel function or calculator program that yields a babies risk level when age and meter reading are input.

2011-09-14 - Hungry

Cody is seemingly always hungry. He has these cluster feedings (that sometimes last 5 hours) where he wants to pretty much constantly feed. It gets so bad at times that he will just get done eating 2.5 ounces and still wants more (keep in mind he's still less than 2 weeks old). These are probably our most difficult times as new parents because he cries so much and the only way to get him to stop is to give him even more food.

Used Topaz Detail for most of the heavy lifting on this to help enhance details and subject isolation (through tonal tweaks). Needed a bit of Topaz DeNoise to clean the "enhanced" noise from Detail, And finally Aperture to do some contrast and local color adjustments.

Nissequogue River at low Tide

The Nissequogue River is an 8.3-mile (13.4 km) long river flowing from Smithtown, New York into the Long Island Sound.

Its discharge of 42.2 cubic feet (1.19 m3) a second is the most of any of the freshwater rivers on Long Island.

The river, like all other freshwater rivers on the island, is totally derived from groundwater (not from lakes).

Its name is derived from one of the Algonquin speaking Nissequaq tribe in the area.

The river begins at Caleb Smith Park in Smithtown (where special regulation trout fishing is available) and flows to Kings Park, New York. Since much of the river is an estuary canoeists travel in both directions based on the tides.

One of Long Island’s best rivers for canoeing and kayaking is the Nissequogue. This very unique waterway offers a five mile run through a surprisingly pristine river corridor. The Nissequogue is a tidal river. Because of the big tides in Long Island Sound, the river actually flows two ways; south or inland during the incoming tide, then north towards the sound on outgoing. Current speeds can reach a knot or two, especially down at the river mouth, so for a leisurely trip, be sure to consult a tide chart and go with the flow!

There are several liveries that rent canoes and kayaks, or you can use your own. If you own your own craft there is a launch site on each end of the river. On the north end, close to Long Island Sound, we have the newly created Nissequogue River State Park which to date is largely undiscovered by the masses, and thus is crowd and hassle free. You pay an entrance fee to get into the Park; there is no charge for the launch.

Up on the south end, the inland end, right on Jericho Turnpike, we have the Paul T. Given Suffolk County Park. It is a rare jewel, a nice little oasis that has managed to exist in the middle of a bustling suburbia. There is no fee to enter the park, no fee to launch, no permits required. You can just pull in there and launch your canoe or kayak. Pretty neat, huh?

You now need a license to fish in the Nissequogue. The entire canoe and kayak-able portion of the River, that is, from the Paul T. Given Park north to Long Island Sound, is part of New York State’s Marine District, and as of 10/09 a New York State Marine District fishing license is required. Actually catching a fish from a canoe or kayak may be a rare and exciting event, but it is a definite possibility. Some very large trout cruise the upper portions of the Nissequogue while the lower end holds striped bass, bluefish, fluke and flounder, all in their own season. There is a huge and growing list of rules that govern the taking of any species that you are likely to catch; size limits, creel limits, open and closed season, etc., so without knowledge of these restrictions, catch and release is a good idea.

This river is also a great spot for the birdwatchers. My good friend, who is an experienced naturalist, can identify around 25 species on an average canoe trip. Even a casual observer like me can spot a half-dozen or more. For the last few years, the lower Nissequogue has been home to a pair of nesting ospreys. If you are very lucky, you may see one of these beauties pluck a fish from the water, or see the baby ospreys poking their heads up from the nest, waiting for momma to fly home and feed them.

We initially decided to use cloth diapers figuring it was better for baby, the environment and our budget. That lasted about 3 months and we were very happy with them. Then, Sophia started going to daycare and they don't allow non-disposable diapers. Oh well, at least we started with good intentions.

There's some neat art on the base of this drop-spindle sculpture. First day at home with River

This is River in his papasan chair after we brought him home from the hospital. I bought him this adorable going home outfit with hippos on the jacket and feet and ears on the hat. The hat? Didn't fit his big head. I feel a bit justified in the pain of his birth by this fact, honestly.

I'm back from Africa! Specifically Nairobi in Kenya, and then Zanzibar (island), Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation area in Tanzania. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience (altho pretty sure I'll be back again very soon). I got to see the Big 5 (yay!), and tons and tons of wildlife that roams the vast African safari. I did a few game drives in a safari vehicle where the top can be taken off and you can stick your head up to get a panorama view of the plains at any given time. Few nights of camping with a group of people, they were young and fun and great to be with. We had campfires, stargazing, great African local foods, tons and tons of booths selling local crafts in tiny houses made with mud. We had even visited a local Masai Village where the local people danced for us and gave us detailed introduction to their village, showed us their kids and kindergarden, how they build their houses...etc. It was just awesome.

For the 2nd part of the trip, I stopped by Amsterdam/Rotterdam (Netherlands), Cologne (Germany), Brussels (Belgium), and a couple other smaller towns for a 5 day European trip. God it was COLDDDD, and one night there was a snowstorm which made it really scary to drive. Still it was a great introduction to Europe and I got to see quite a few awesome churches and castles.

And yes I got my new camera (Olympus E-5) the day before I left at 8pm! Thank God. I quickly went through the user manual and packed it up, and I thought that it was the best day of the year.

That was the happy part. The sad part was that I broke my most used lens (12-60mm) the FIRST DAY I was there! I accidentally dropped the camera and the lens to the ground when I was lugging them around at the Kenya airport (it was in a camera bag but it didn't help :/ ), and the metal bracket at the bottom of the lens was bent due to the force. At first the autofocus completely failed. While feeling devastated, I took a tiny pair of scissors and slowly unscrewed the tiny screws on the brackets, took the metal ring out, and attemped to use the pair of piers in my multipurpose toolset to bend the ring back to its original form. After 2 hours of hard work (in front of a small lamp in a dark hostel room) I managed to fix 80% of it. The lens started to focus again from 18mm to 60mm, however it still wouldnt focus in the 12mm to 18mm range, which really sucked as that's range I used the most for wide angle/landscape shots. It was devastating, really, and I was holding my tears. For the entire duration of the trip I had to use F22 (smallest aperture) to do all the wide angle shots, despite the softness of the image at such an extreme aperture, and of course it worked only when there was plenty of light. Under F22 the images turned out to be okay, still a little blurry, but at least it sort of worked.

Anyway, here's a shot of an orphan baby elephant. It was taken at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi/Kenya, where orphaned elephants that lost their parents or injured are rescued and being taken care of. There were about 20 baby elephants at the show, they were really playful and cute, cuddling each other, having fun in the mud pool, and visitors can pet them as they get closer. More images to come, of course.

early this morning was all set to come to your streams for the whole day! (so happy! :)) .. after sorting out these videos & images to do a post of several ~ because we have been in a 3-day thunder-lightning rainstorm.. so i haven't been able to be online
then...
something astonishing .. and heart-stopping .. happened with baby spirit... *
(everything is okay, i hope, now ;)

so all these hours later ~ am going to do 6 posts plus some images within because... if i don't do it now they will likely never get posted ;)

this is how its been all day every day since babyheart was injured! .. when fairy terns from all over suddenly just appeared..... out of the blue ~*~
(have written about this heart-inspiring phenomenon in prior images :*)

yesterday when a dear friend met here on flickr called to see how babita is doing - since i have not been able to post/be on flickr for the last 3 days due to the near-constant lightning - she said she was surprised at the ?sound! of the gentle fairy terns .. as, while we talked, they were coming & going like this

yes :) ... when they're excited, its much like a parrot's

when just 1 spirit bird is calling to another .. like a parent bringing food ... (how do they do that with fish in their beaks?! :*) ... its a wonderful, comforting, welcoming sound .. different than this, it sounds like the soft, shuffling of a piglet snorkeling in a wonderland of food & dirt ;)

when a dozen are excitedly flying around, it is loud squawking ...all day this way, its a bit much! especially for our lightbulb, who sooo needs rest..
(so i've asked them nicely to chill out a bit ;)

yet!

have found that if i just breathe ... the sound seems to be a wonderfully astringent karma-cleanser :))
and when they leave for a few minutes between gatherings like this, i feel like i've just been swimming beneath a waterfall ~~~ *
