Peony tattoo This is something i've wanted to do for about the last decade or so. I know my parents wlll loathe it, but i had to anyway. I'm a big geek about symbolism in things, and this carries a lot of symbolism for me. The Peony is a flower of May. It stands for happiness, prosperity, love and affection. Our son will be born in May, this was a sort of acknowledgment of that. Common in Chinese symbology for a peony is as a positive influence on a couple. Red is a life giving color, which is why i picked red as the color. The peony in Japan also has a bit of an audacious or adventurous attitude, which i guess is appropriate for a 29-year old guy that's about to be a father getting a big tattoo. I do apologize to my parents for getting this, but i do not regret my decision. It is a piece of art that carries a lot of meaning for me. My new tattoo! So today I spent pretty much all day getting my arm tattooed. It was done by one of the Finely Tuned Assassins guitarists, Nick (www.myspace.com/nick_g1987 ). And I love it! It's not finished yet though...still have one fairly big space to fill and lots of little ones, plus things like some of the feathers on the owl (which is soooo cute) need colouring in and the tips of the leaves and random tiny little bits on flowers etc. I'm not having it all coloured in though because I like it as it is. The chinese lettering around my wrist is going to be totally filled in as a solid black band I think, perhaps with a coloured line underneath it all the way round, or some coloured dots or something...so it's in keeping with the rest. Amethyst Pendant and Earrings This started out as a simple wirewrapped Charoite stone donut. The colors in the stone were soft and I was trying to bring out the best in the stone. Instead the stone donut became the base for a trio of carved amethyst flowers, sage green glass leaves, and Swarovski crystal beads to add sparkle. I knitted a tube of Sage Green ribbon to use as part of the necklace and then added Sage Green Suede Leather strands to Bali Silver cones and to finish out the look. It's earthy yet elegant. I made earrings that were extremely simple in design. They match the pendant but don't distract from it. amethyst flower donut with ribbon and leather strap The is the pendant portion only of a necklace that I call Amethyst Vine. This is a Charoite stone donut that is wirewrapped with sterling silver wire and three beautiful carved Amethyst flowers. I added pretty sage green leaves and carried the fine up a small portion of the necklace ribbon. It's one of my favorites. I'm having trouble getting a good photo of the entire piece because the ribbon and suede I used for the necklace are the same sage green color but show up brown and green in my photos. Time to talk to a professional photographer! Flowers One of my favorite things to do in Cashiers is visit the wonderful farmer's market they have! Home to a pig named Biscuit, this farmer's market has beautiful peaches, tomatoes, apples, and FLOWERS! Walk in and it has a general-store-like feel to it. All around you are crates piled high with vegetables and fruits, jarred preservatives, jams, jellies, beans... the list goes on and on. On the porch there are cute little pots like the one above planted with flowers or herbs, nifty welcome mats, and baskets of the most beautiful produce you've ever seen in your life. Peaches, apples, gourds, squash.... There is also a barbeque-roaster that, during certain times of the day and evening, will fill the air with mouth-watering aromas of smoked pork. And of course, you can visit the pig, Biscuit, outside in her pen where she greets visitors! Pansies (ink & wash) I bought myself a pot of pansies to plant in my garden and decided, before putting them outside, to do some drawings of them. For this ink and wash version I first did a drawing using a dip pen with green ink (emerald green, slightly darkened with a few drops of burnt sienna) and then laid in some watercolour washes. I'm fairly pleased with how the flowers turned out, although most of the foliage isn't that great. I got quite frustrated with the drawing as it progressed, and I almost didn't bother to complete it, but the finished result isn't as bad as I thought it might be.
