Canopy Trying out new effects.. combination of processing using Light Room 2 and GIMP 2. Greyscale and tweaking in LR2, duplicated layer in GIMP given gaussian blur filter, this layer is then duplicated and an edge detect filter is applied. Lowest layer is the edge detect, blur image on top with low opacity, straight from LR2 layer on top at 50% opacity. Interesting leaf vein effect emerging from the fine branches of the canopy. Kodak No. 0 Junior Pocket camera For Christmas I got a thoughtful, much appreciated gift from Lisa. A Kodak circa 1920s fold out, accordion style film camera. Takes 120mm medium format film which is luckily still in widespread use. The viewfinder shows the image you're taking upside down. The shutter release is a level at the side, and you can manually "switch" apeture sizes with a metal dial. Blind Faith This is a photograph of a portion of an old church in rural South Dakota. As I walked around the little used and poorly cared for building, this image caught my eye. It has a striking graphic quality which, in my mind, stands alone, without any other interpretation. It can simply be enjoyed just for that. However, as I was composing the photograph, reflecting upon the image, it made me think of the gradual retreat, withdrawal, and blindness of the church of the past few generations. We seem to be solely concerned with what is happening within our own walls; a valid concern to be sure. But there are people outside of our faith communities who need to be invited in; people with real questions, problems, and needs. We, however, seem to be occupied more with building fortresses, finding ways to keep people out, rather than bridges that invite people in. I speculate that part of this has to do with the politicalizationof the church. We have, to borrow from Ed Dobson and Cal Thomas, been blinded by the political might we've gained over the past thirty years. It's time to tear the covering off our windows, replace the pious stained glass with clear, and engage our culture in a conversation about truth, life as it is supposed to be lived, about Jesus. livingroom blinds the little blotch of sunlight is from the window on the west wall, a window that currently lacks a warm window blind. the insulation power of the warm window fabric i made these with is AMAZING. it stops 81% of heat loss in winter and 79% of solar gain in the summer. i anxiously await cost and energy savings because printing the fabric for these by hand/cutting/sewing and installing these to cover a 6' x 12' window very nearly fucking killed me. Stout Building Stout Building at 5 E. First in Fort Scott Kansas. It was built in 1924. It was constructed and owned by the Stout family—grandfather W. H. Stout, father H. L. Stout, and son Howard Stout. H. L. (Lee) Stout built this apartment/commercial building at the same time as the Western Insurance Company/ Scottish Rite Temple building was rising across the street to the south. For many years, the Western “girls” who worked across the street lived in the apartments on the second and third floors of the building. A tile-roofed canopy attached to the west side of the building sheltered a service station. This business opened June 28, 1924 to serve the automobiles traveling on U.S. Highway 69 which followed National Avenue through town. It is a contributing building in the Fort Scott Downtown Historic District. NRIS #09001091. Added in 2009. Commercial Building Commercial Building at 11 N. Main in Fort Scott Kansas. It was built c.1880. In the 1884 Sanborn map, it was recorded as a two-story brick store selling boots and shoes. Later, it housed J. H. Crane, optometrist and C. W. Liggett Jewelry. According to the 1909 city directory, Rodecker Brothers, clothing, were listed at this address with photographer S. E. Dunham and real estate agent J. B. Fulton on the second floor. Photographer William J. Brockman later had his office at this location. Louderback’s A & P Grocery was a well known business at this location from 1925 to 1941. James Bahr bought the property in 1951. It is now houses a used bookstore. It is a contributing building in the Fort Scott Downtown Historic District. NRIS #09001091. Added in 2009. Back in the late 1980's, a man was murdered in a room there and his widow and children sued the hotel for negligence, claiming that the hotel could have prevented the death. My firm represented the hotel. The deceased had been seen in the company of a suspected prostitute the night before he was found naked and dead in his room. I had captured this tree in several shots, but as I wandered past it, I noticed that it's underside was open and tent-like so as to create a canopy. A "what I did on my summer vacation" project to stop erosion and add a little touch of finese and expand my backyard shade garden . 75 blocks, a full load of dirt ( 7 yards, that's 189 cubic feet. My wheelbarrow holds 2 cubic feet, if you want to "do the math" and figure out how many trips that is). It was great fun.
