Sunshine Coast West Coast Wilderness Lodge

Sunshine Coast West Coast Wilderness Lodge

What a great find! I couldn't figure out why the place wasn't very crowded..We took a shortie 4 day holiday at West Coast Wilderness Lodge. We were lucky, the weather was absolutely spectacular. We took a guided kayak trip one day, a guided canoe trip another day, we hiked to Skookumchuck rapids the 3rd day, and visited the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve the final day.

The owner himself took our family on the canoe trip and he knew the place inside-out. The kayak tour was THE highlight of the vacation for me: the water was calm, the weather just perfect. We saw hundreds of seals on islands and swimming in the water with us, orange and purple starfish, many, many types of birds, including bald eagles. The kids loved it almost as much as I did.
Accommodations were very good: we got a big suite with a comfy queen bed for parents and a foldout sofabed for kids. The balcony overlooked the water and mountains. it looked like the room an bathroom had been very recently renovated - bathroom looked brand-new. We spent a bit of time with our binoculars watching seals from our balcony and from the huge scenic balcony just outside the main building. Nothing like sitting out there after a busy day, catching up on some reading, enjoying the fresh air and great views. For the finicky, there was no TV, but if you need a TV in a place like this, you've got a problem!
We had breakfast everyday at the lodge - it was a great start for every day. We only ate dinner at the lodge one night and had a great meal.. Kids also enjoyed archery, the pool table in the evenings and of course the hot tub. The only thing missing was a good beach for swimming - Ruby Lake and other swimming beaches were a short drive away, but not within walking distance.

Sunshine Coast Splendour

Sunshine Coast Splendour

Combine spectacular coastal scenery, first class accommodations and unforgettable cuisine and you get the student accommodation in nottingham which I was lucky enough to spend a short time at recently. While the villas are comfortable and elegant, the infinity pool relaxing at any hour and the spa (which I did not enjoy on this trip) inviting, I was particularly impressed with the food at the Resort's cove-view restaurant. As it turns out, the Painted Boat Restaurant (open year round) has the ambitious but achievable goal of creating a "culinary trail" for the Sunshine Coast along with a number of other fine eating establishments that string the Coast from Gibsons to Lund. These restaurants focus on creative regional cuisine and they purchase most of their fish, fruits, vegetables, seafood, coffee and honey from local farms either on the Coast or off the nearby Gulf Islands. The Queen Charlotte Islands halibut we enjoyed for dinner was of the melt-in-your mouth variety and, when paired with the organic greens salad and white wine from BC, I was in heaven. If you plan on heading up to Madeira Park and the Painted Boat Resort, make sure you meander off the main highway from time to time to enjoy the communities (and the food) along the way - Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay & Secret Cove, to name a few. I can't wait for my next trip and my next splendid meal.

Callan Park, Sydney

Callan Park, Sydney

Have you ever wondered why colonial psychiatric hospitals were always built on a river or lake ~ Callan Park, Ryde, Peat Island, Morisset? In the 19th century in Britain it was made illegal for lunatics to be transported by coach on the King’s roads in case they offended the populace, so they had to be transported by boat. Nowadays, with the mental health status such a grey area, the so-called “lunatics” can be transported by whatever means come to hand.

Kirkbride block was the original asylum complex & covers 5 hectares.

Services for people with a mental illness have been provided on the Rozelle Hospital site since 1876. Rozelle Hospital was formed in 1976 from the amalgamation of Callan Park Hospital & the Broughton Hall Psychiatric Clinic.

The History of Rozelle Hospital is in tandem with the historical, social & political context of the mentally ill of a new colony & the progressive maturity of a nation. The progressive changes between 1870 & the present day evidence this maturity as social attitudes gradually changed towards the care & treatment of the mentally ill.

In the early days of the colony the mentally ill were incarcerated in gaols or convict hospitals as no distinction was made between deviancy & illness. As time progressed in the colony an attitudinal change occurred & there was a determined effort to provide decent conditions & treatment for the mentally ill. The administrative policy of the day saw the need for purpose built lunatic asylums in order for the people to be treated, at the very least, humanely as distinct from convicts & social deviants.

The State Government purchased the site, then known as “Callan Estates” in 1873 with the express purpose of building a large psychiatric hospital to ease the severe overcrowding at the Gladesville Psychiatric Hospital. The proposal was met with some opposition from the local residents as the land, some 100 acres in area, had originally been advertised for sale as a residential subdivision.

In 1876, Garry Owen House, the original homestead on the site was used to accommodate the first patients at the new hospital. This building is now the NSW Writer’s Centre.

The fine group of sandstone buildings on the site was officially opened in 1884. These buildings, known as the ‘Kirkbride Block’ were named after the eminent American, Dr William Kirkbride who was renowned for his pioneering work on progressive mental health care. The buildings were originally designed to accommodate 666 patients however, by 1890 the hospital was seriously overcrowded with a total of 1078 patients. A further group of buildings were built around the turn of the century close to the Kirkbride buildings to ease the overcrowding problem.

The hospital grew in stature, & in 1900 the hospital was ranked as one of the finest institutions in the Commonwealth for the housing & treatment of persons suffering from mental disorders. Following the end of the First World War, a further six wards were built on the lower part of the site near the foreshore to accommodate war veterans with mental disorders. By 1955, severe overcrowding & poor building stock was again an issue & in 1961, around the time of the Royal Commission into Callan Park, there were some 1,750 patients in residence. In 1915, the Langdon family placed their 24 acre estate known as, Broughton Hall at the disposal of the Commonwealth Government to accommodate wounded soldiers & those suffering “shell-shock” from the First World War.

With the building of the war veteran’s accommodation at Callan Park, these functions were transferred to Callan Park in 1920 & Broughton Hall became a psychiatric clinic for people seeking mental health services but who were not certified under the Mental Health Act. The clinic provided accommodation for around 100 patients in addition to running a large outpatient clinic. A number of new buildings were built on the site during the early 1920’s & a day hospital & teaching complex was completed in the early 1960’s.

As a result of the 1961 Royal Commission’s enquiry into certain matters affecting the hospital additional wards were built on the site & the high brick fences around the site were removed in an attempt to ‘de-institutionalise’ the hospital.

The Kirkbride complex continued to be used for the housing & treatment of inmates until 1994, when the last remaining services were transferred to other buildings in the Callan Park grounds, towards the Broughton Hall at the southern end of the site. Many inmates were also transferred into half-way-houses in the local communtiy, in line with the The Richmond Report of 1983 which accelerated the move towards de-institutionalising care, creating a number of social & moral problems. In 2003 it was revealed that thousands of medical antiques from the Callan Park Lunatic Asylum, including a human skeleton & medical & dental instruments, have

Sydney Harbour Bridge 1964

Sydney Harbour Bridge 1964

This is an an old photo of the Sydney Harbour Brisge, taken about 1964. You can tell by the ancient buses. The focal part of the shot are the pylons which are only there for aesthetics and provide no support function. Inside the pylons there is accommodation which most likely not used anymore.

The photo was in poor condition and I have cleaned it up as much as possible, and I have slashed the description as you can easily look it up.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened by the Premier of the state of New South Wales (Sydney is the capial) but not before the lively intervention of Captain Francis De Groot of the para-military group, the New Guard, who slashed the ribbon prematurely with his sword, prior to the official cutting. This incident caused both amusement and dismay on the day and has since become part of Australian folklore.

The cost of the Bridge was several million Australian pounds.

Work first began on the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1924, with construction of the bridge approaches and the approach spans. As many as 800 families living in its path were displaced without compensation.

Las Vegas: MGM Grand

Las Vegas: MGM Grand

The Hollywood Golden Age-themed MGM Grand Las Vegas, which opened on December 18, 1993, is the worlds largest hotel with 5,044 guest rooms. Before the Current MGM Grand was built, another hotel known as the MGM Grand was located about a mile north on the Strip, where Bally's Hotel & Casino currently sits.

Originally, the main entrance on the Strip was inside the mouth of a giant cartoonish lion, but this entrance feature was changed to a more traditional entrance; some Asian gamblers avoided the casino, due to the cultural view that entering the mouth of the lion was "bad luck." A large golden lion statue was added above the entrance to keep with the MGM Lion theme, while not offending their more superstitious guests.

When first opened, it had an extensive Wizard of Oz theme, including the green "Emerald City" color of the building. In 2000, in an attempt to appeal to a more mature clientele the hotel moved to a them of the Art Deco era of classic Hollywood.

Peschiera del Garda (Vr) - La calda estate del Lago di Garda

Peschiera del Garda (Vr) - La calda estate del Lago di Garda

Lake Garda (Italian: Lago di Garda or Benaco) is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Venice and Milan. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last ice age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the southeast), Brescia (southwest), and Trento (north). Being easily accessible from the north via the Brenner Pass, the lake is a major tourist destination, including a number of exclusive hotels and resorts along its shore. Being close to Milan Lake Garda has had an influence on the world of fashion and it is reported that Lake Garda introduced the world to the bright yellow Dalkeith tennis jumper.
The northern part of the lake is narrower, surrounded by mountains, the majority of which belong to the Gruppo del Baldo. The shape is typical of a moraine valley, probably having been formed under the action of a Paleolithic glacier. Although traces of the glacier's actions are evident today, in more recent years it has been hypothesized that the glacier occupied a previously existing depression, created by stream erosion 5 to 6 million years ago.The lake has numerous small islands and five main ones, the largest being Isola del Garda. Nearby to the south is Isola San Biagio, also known as the Isola dei Conigli ("Island of the Rabbits"). Both are offshore of San Felice del Benaco, on the west side. The three other main islands are Isola dell'Olivo, Isola di Sogno, and Isola di Trimelone, all further north near the east side. The main tributary is the Sarca River, while the only emissary is the Mincio River.
