"The Natural"

I wanted to create something that is honest and organic feel.
Something you can see human touch and interaction and less cold.
The sandblasted steel + Aluminum is free of any finish or sealer.
Hopefully it'll "record" its usage honestly.
The sanded brass dial is also without any finish. It should patina and oxidize in time as well.
The natural, un-dyed leather NATO again, will stain and patina with use.

Interestingly, the texture of the sandblasted steel and aluminum matches the grain in the leather of the watch.
Wasn't expecting that, but it turned out well.

On Thursday, June 16, 2011, PETS finally brought 2nd A class tram 121 to Whiteman Park. It was built in 1928 and has now spent some decades in a yard in Forrestfield.

Some years ago I wrote this poem:

Perth Electric Tramway

Back in the years before the war when I first came to this land,
What we call the suburbs now was mostly scrub and sand.
The streets were rough and pot-holed from hoof and heavy load.
They laid two iron tram rails down the middle of the road.

From the Causeway down to Como and through Victoria Park
These wooden beasts would glide along from dawn till after dark.
To Claremont and to Subi, from Perth to Inglewood,
I'd ride those Perth Electric Trams as often as I could.

On Saturdays, Mum, Dad and I watched football in the town.
We'd catch the tram down Beaufort Street and then 'shank' it to the ground
And when I started courting, I lived out in the 'sticks'.
My girl and I would catch the tram to and from the flicks.

But streets and times got better. More motors shared the road.
The council said the tramway would finally have to go.
They all were old and past repair, their days were at an end.
Modern fleets of diesel buses were the latest trend.

But sometimes on a summer night when I'm hot and half asleep,
I dream I hear those wooden trams, rattling down the street.

i wrote seven thousand words tonight, in under four hours. i have no idea how i did this, i think it might have to be chalked up to magic.

then i took myself off to the bluebird to see a bunch of bands. i really liked the first band that played (the analysts). they sounded a lot like interpol, which is a band i really like, so of course i liked them. the second band (the bureau) was pretty dec, too. but by the time their set was over, i was sweating to death, so annie and i and some of her friends went outside to stand in the breeze.

there was a van with rock band running on a ps3. oh. my. god. i totally missed the first half of the third band's set, because i was busy watching boys play rock band. i missed a real band because i was watching a video game band. it was kind of pathetic. and by the time i got around to going inside, my head was really hurting, and i only stayed for two songs before i had to book.

(it is because while i was writing, i forgot to eat something. those slimfast shakes do not really replace meals, because even though i had one, i am still dying for some real food. except i just looked in my fridge: i have a quart of yogurt, two bottles of boone's farm, some dairy milk, some soy milk, and half an order of french fries from sunday night. and a bunch of slimfast shakes. i rule.)

seriously. kat and i wrote more than 60,000 words in under a month. our drop dead date to get the book to jozelle is friday. the only problem is that, uh, we haven't written the climax of the book yet. beginning? yup. middle? yup. end? yup. final battle scene? nope! oops.

Uncharted 2: Among Theives

(for the record - game was played on Hard mode)

I put the wraps on Uncharted 2 this weekend and hot damn was that game phenomenal. Everything about it was just absolutely top notch from the gameplay & graphics to the characters & story to the music & sound. Uncharted 2 is the epitome of a AAA title done right, an extremely fun game that looks just as fantastic as it plays.

Uncharted 2 puts you in the center of a big budget, Hollywood action blockbuster. Bullets whiz overhead, huge explosions keep you on the move and adrenaline-fueled, action sequences push you to the edge of your seat. Sprinkle in some life or death platforming and the second you pick up that controller you are in for one helluva ride.

Uncharted 2 received the dubious 'you can't play this when I'm not around' distinction from my Ev as she enjoyed watching me play and wanted to see how the story unfolded. The two of us even went back and watched all the story cinematics in a row after completing the game. Not to mention checking out the Naughty Dog featurettes that are unlockable bonuses (more games need to do this).

I enjoyed the first Uncharted, and the sequel did not disappoint - even with the added component of multi-player. I'm sure everyone has already played this game, but if you haven't and you own a PS3 then you need to fix that ASAP! Hell, even if you don't own a PS3 Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are REASONS to go out and pick one up!

Frogman is a popular term for a scuba diver. The word arose around 1940 from the appearance of a diver in shiny wetsuit and with large fins on his feet.

new jersey balloon festival summer 2008 4285 [no invites/icons please]

these barn animals amused me this morning at the annual nj balloon festival. balloons are hard to compose so for this particular capture, i had to watch and make sure the balloons were not overlapping and were spread out evenly close to the lines on the rule-of-thirds. it's not quite perfect but the spacing turned out nice and even.

geek note: this is one of those don't care aperture scenarios so i set my aperture to f/8 throughout and just adjusted the shutter speed manually as the light changed. i bumped up my iso to 200 to ensure that my shutter speed was decent and would be fast enough to capture the movement of the balloons.

Self: Watch

This is a self-portrait which I used to show people the kind of thing I had in mind for a photography project I carried out in Poland during 2006.

I started in winter when the daily temperatures were minus 15 to minus 30 degrees celsius and everything was white with snow. And I completed the project in summer when temperatures were 30 plus degrees celsius and the small room with bright orange walls which I was using for a studio on the 3rd floor of a block of flats was sweltering hot. The studio lights added to the heat and in this way the project was truly based upon the principle of yin and yang where seasons are concerned.

I asked everyone the same question. "What is your most treasured possession and why?"

The example I gave was my watch which represents family love because my parents bought it for my 21st birthday. In monetary terms it doesn't have great value but it means a lot to me. The true value is far greater than the monetary value.

The watch also symbolises time, which is a deeply fascinating concept. In some ways we all hurry and rush about our daily lives - often slaves of time. And yet, at a deeper level there is only ever one moment and it's here and now and it's constant. When we deeply understand the present, we begin to understand time itself is just an imaginary concept no more solid than this watch that has been put together with springs and hands, a little stainless steal and a nice little strap.

None of these parts by themselves are my watch. Even all the parts together in a heap aren't my watch. When you take the watch apart, you are left with the question "what watch is there?" At a deeper level it's possible to understand there is no watch. What appears to be a watch is a temporary manifestation of form which gives the appearance of what is known as a watch. And it's interesting to reflect how all form is just like this. All form is empty of inherent existence.

For this reason, I suspected true value must always be beyond form although I didn't tell anyone this at the time. And the truest human concepts beyond form are love and compassion. I suggest this simply because love and compassion arise naturally when we find ourselves in harmony with nature. For these reasons I thought true value would be those manifestations of form that represent love and compassion.

Kemmner Marine

The 'Marine' style watch is based on the WW2 deckwatches used by the German Navy (Kriegsmarine). Several brands offer their modern reinterpretation of this classic design, of which Stowa has the most well known version.

Kemmner is an ex-employee of Fricker, a company that buids cases for watchbrands - including Stowa, ironically. He has since gone solo and sells parts and entire watches under his own name. This Marine watch of his features a Swiss Unitas 6498 movement and parts from unknown origins, but costs just a third of what the (very beautiful) Stowa Marine Original costs.

Don't mind the flieger strap - that's a temporary solution. I didn't have any other 22mm straps lying around.

Ronnie Barker

Ronnie Barker, kindly poses for a photograph between takes, during the filming of the Television comedy 'Open All Hours' in which he plays the famous stuttering shopkeeper Albert Arkwright. The episode being filmed at the time was Series 2 episode 5, 'Arkwrights Mobile Store' which was first shown on TV on Sunday 29th March 1981. In total there were 26 episodes, spread over 4 series, of Open All Hours, running between 1976 and 1985. I visited the film set many times to watch the filming, it was the worst kept secret around Doncaster when filming started, and met Ronnie Barker several times, although very quiet he always had time for a chat, to sign autographs and pose for the odd photograph. Sadly missed Ronnie Barker passed away on 3rd October 2005, aged 76.
