OUTDOOR FAKE FLOWERS : FAKE FLOWERS
Outdoor Fake Flowers : Portraits Of Flowers.
Outdoor Fake Flowers
- Artificial flowers and imitations of natural flowers are sometimes made for scientific purposes (the collection of glass flowers at Harvard University, for example, which illustrates the flora of the United States), but more often as articles for commercial or residential decoration.
- (outdoors) where the air is unconfined; "he wanted to get outdoors a little"; "the concert was held in the open air"; "camping in the open"
- (outdoors) outside: outside a building; "in summer we play outside"
- (of a person) Fond of the open air or open-air activities
- Done, situated, or used out of doors
- outdoor(a): located, suited for, or taking place in the open air; "outdoor clothes"; "badminton and other outdoor games"; "a beautiful outdoor setting for the wedding"
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FLOWER
The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read
Beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree.
Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown,
For the world was intent on dragging me down.
And if that weren't enough to ruin my day,
A young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play
He stood right before me with his head tilted down
And said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"
In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight,
With its petals all worn - not enough rain, or too little light.
Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play,
I faked a small smile and then shifted away.
But instead of retreating he sat next to my side
And placed the flower to his nose
And declared with overacted surprise,
It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too.
That's why I picked it; here, it's for you."
The weed before me was dying or dead.
Not vibrant of colors: orange, yellow or red.
But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave.
So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."
but instead of him placing the flower in my hand,
He held it mid-air without reason or plan.
It was then that I noticed for the very first time
That weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.
I heard my voice quiver; tears shone in the sun
As I thanked him for picking the very best one.
You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play,
Unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.
I sat there and wondered how he managed to see
A self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree.
How did he know of my self-indulged plight?
Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.
Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see
The problem was not with the world; the problem was me.
And for all of those times I myself had been blind,
I vowed to see the beauty in life, And appreciate every second that's mine.
And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose
And breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose
And smiled as I watched that young boy, Another weed in his hand,
About to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

Spring - If it doesn't exist, invent it.
Lens: Meyer 50/1.8 Oreston.
Plant: Flos fictus "Fake Flower".
In Alberta, this time of spring is a cruel period. We get to see a lot of wonderful spring scenes - on Flickr. Just had nearly a foot of snow yesterday. It won't last long, but spring is still a month away. Luckily, we have plastic flowers. You'll have to forgive my desperation but, at least the bokeh is real :)
Honestly though, do look back over my March/April outdoor shots and compare to this bouquet of plastic flowers shot with a $50 lens. This one owns them all - subject and light, controlled. Rather than complain about the abysmally boring 7 month stretch of time between the end of autumn and the start of spring/summer in June, perhaps I ought to find something else to shoot. Any suggestions on what occupies your optics in hibernation season? I'll make my best effort to shoot the first good suggestion and post it up here.

Future Photographer
My friend and I went to Las Vegas during this X'mas holiday. One of the nights, we were sick of gambling so we went out to take night scene photos. It was freezing in Las Vegas at night (only about 38F and very windy). After shooting 30 minutes, we could not stand for the cold and decide to head back to the hotel to rest a bit.
We went into Bellagio and found out they have X'mas decorations (it seems none of the other hotels/casinos have X'mas decorations). My friend and I decided to take some X'mas theme photos.
All of the sudden, a kid, is around 7-8 years old, walked around with a HUGE camera and taking photos of flowers!!! He took time to compose and adjust the settings on his HUGE camera. After each shot, he actually reviewed the photo and shot again after changed the settings.
Based on my other shots of this kid, he is holding a Canon EOS 40D with a 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens.
OMG... (and what a shame that I only can take a snapshot of him!!! I don't want to draw too much attention so I could not use my flash at all. All I can do is using ISO 6400.)
Fading Memories
As I sit at my desk in the freezing cold of a mid western winter, It is a joy to review these photos taken in the warm, Carmel sunshine

I bought lilacs this weekend, too
There was a huge lilac bush on the end of the block where I lived growing up. Every spring it would burst into a huge purple afro and you'd get hit with that marvelously peppery fragrance as you walked by. I used to sneak into the yard and grab a small sprig sometimes, to sniff at as I walked to school. When I was little I thought I could capture the lilac essence by soaking the flowers in water for weeks. Needless to say the result was more compost than perfume.
Good Fences Make Good Lilacs
Our neighbours lilac flowers mostly on our side.
Look at the aged effect on that fence! You can't buy that kind of character!
Of course, it's also hard to keep it from falling over...

Tulip / Tulp
Tulipa, commonly called tulip, is a genus of about 150 species of bulbous flowering plants in the family Liliaceae. The native range of the species includes southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia from Anatolia and Iran in the west to northeast of China. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, used as pot plants or as fresh cut flowers. Most cultivars of tulip are derived from Tulipa gesneriana.
The species are perennials from bulbs, the tunicate bulbs often produced on the ends of stolons and covered with glabrous to variously hairy papery coverings. The species include short low-growing plants to tall upright plants, growing from 10 to 70 centimeters (4–27 in) tall. They can even grow in the cold and snowy winter. Plants typically have 2 to 6 leaves, with some species having up to 12 leaves. The cauline foliage is strap-shaped, waxy-coated, usually light to medium green and alternately arranged. The blades are somewhat fleshy and linear to oblong in shape. The large flowers are produced on scapes or subscapose stems normally lacking bracts. The stems have no leaves to a few leaves, with large species having some leaves and smaller species have none. Typically species have one flower per stem but a few species have up to four flowers. The colorful and attractive cup shaped flowers typically have three petals and three sepals, which are most often termed tepals because they are nearly identical. The six petaloid tepals are often marked near the bases with darker markings. The flowers have six basifixed, distinct stamens with filaments shorter than the tepals and the stigmas are districtly 3-lobed. The ovaries are superior with three chambers. The 3 angled fruits are leathery textured capsules, ellipsoid to subglobose in shape, containing numerous flat disc-shaped seeds in two rows per locule.
Origin of the name
Although tulips are associated with Holland, both the flower and its name originated in the Persian empire. The tulip, or lale (from Persian ????, laleh) as it is also called in Turkey, is a flower indigenous to Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and other parts of Central Asia. It is unclear who first brought the flower to northwest Europe. The most widely accepted story is that of Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq, Ambassador from Ferdinand I to Suleyman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire in 1554. He remarks in a letter upon seeing "an abundance of flowers everywhere; Narcissus, hyacinths, and those which in Turkish Lale, much to our astonishment, because it was almost midwinter, a season unfriendly to flowers. In Persian Literature (classic and modern) special attention has been given to these two flowers, in specific likening the beloved eyes to Narges and a glass of wine to Laleh. The word tulip, which earlier in English appeared in such forms as tulipa or tulipant, entered the language by way of French tulipe and its obsolete form tulipan or by way of Modern Latin tulipa, from Ottoman Turkish tulbend, 'muslin, gauze'. (The English word turban, first recorded in English in the 16th century, can also be traced to Ottoman Turkish tulbend.)
Tulips originate from mountainous areas with temperate climates and need a period of cool dormancy. They do best in climates with long cool springs and early summers, but they are often grown as spring blooming annual plantings in warmer areas of the world. The bulbs are typically planted in late summer and fall, normally from 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8 in.) deep, depending of the type planted, in well draining soils. In parts of the world that do not have long cool springs and early summers, the bulbs are often planted up to 12 inches deep; this provides some protection from the heat of summer and tends to force the plants to regenerate one large bulb each year instead of many smaller non blooming ones. This can extend the usefulness of the plants in warmer areas a few years but not stave off the degradation in bulb size and eventual death of the plants.

The Texas Pink Bluebonnets at Clark Gardens
....The two children scampered through the April field of wildflowers near San Antonio, on their way to the old mission church to pay their Lenten devotion. They were followed by their slower grandmother, dressed in rusty black. She was painfully thin and her face was seamed with many fine lines.
"Mamacita! Here is a white flower with all the blue ones!", the excited girl cried.
"Those are bluebonnets," her grandmother explained, "and sometimes, very seldom, there is a white one among them. Some even say that the Lone Star of the Texas flag was fashioned after a spot of white bluebonnets amongst a field of blue."
The little boy stood still and gestured to the bloom at his feet, "But what about this pink one then?"
The small group studied the pure pink bluebonnet a moment before the grandmother turned to the children and spoke.
"If the white ones are special, then the pink ones mean even more." She paused, "When I myself was a little girl, my grandmother told me a special story about these rare flowers. They seem to only grow downstream from the mission Alamo, and that is because of something which happened here many years ago."
"It was when Texas was not part of the United States, but only a remote province of Mexico. The Americanos and other foreigners had not been settled here for long, but trade was busy, and we all had hopes of a golden future for our country.
Our family owned a fine house and farm near the old cathedral. My Papa would rise early, take his tools, and work the land before the day grew too hot. Then after the noon siesta, everyone would begin to wake in the cool of the dusk. The adults would bath in the clear river, while we children splashed in the shallows. Everyone would dance, eat, and visit until late into the evening. Sometimes there were Americanos who came to celebrate with us, but their talk always turned to politics. The men were angered because the Constitution had been overthrown by a terrible Mexican dictator.
The men all went about with frowns, and the women began to be afraid. Then came that bitter spring when we learned that the dictator was on his way to our city with many troops. Papa was torn between joining the Americanos to fortify the old mission compound, and fear for his family.
He decided to hide us in the countryside, and every time I look at the ruins of the mission chapel, I remember the fear we lived in during that time. Day and night we heard the cannons and the rifles firing in the distance. The brave new Texans fought long and hard, but in the end were overwhelmed by the Mexican troops.
After the shots had finally ended, we crept silently home in the darkness. Mama and Papa were thankful that our lives had been spared, but it broke their hearts to learn of the many who had lost their lives in that terrible battle. Mama often cried when she passed the homes where friends had fallen.
One day several years later, I found her putting a pink wildflower in a vase beside the statue of the Virgin. She told me she had found it near the river where it had once been white, but so much blood had been shed, it had taken the tint of it.".....

"Painting to be Stepped On" ('61) by Yoko Ono for "INSTRUCTIVE AUTO-DESTRUCTION" by Anthony Cox in "Art and Artists", August, 1966
-- Page 19
"Yoko Ono Painting to be Stepped On, 1961
Almus Gallery, New York"
-- Page 17
"Ono leads in a direction that might be called Concept-Art
INSTRUCTIVE AUTO-DESTRUCTION
THE FULL MOON hangs over the Lower East Side, its light
shines on paper-littered streets. In the daytime 2nd Avenue
is jammed with traffic and it's possible to look up through
the dust and heat at the sky and imagine what those few
seconds would be like before it came if eternity were to fit.
What an EVENT!
What is an Event and what does it have to do with Art?
Circa 1950: Yoko Ono is sitting around some-place
striking matches. She is observing the significance of a
natural act. Many matches later she finds that by lighting
a match and watching til it has gone out she is making
something that has a shorter existence than herself, and
by comparison is making her life longer.
When people are asked to observe the passage of time
they may feel ill at ease. Is this why we have a term like
auto-destruction? One of Yoko Ono's first events is
called LIGHTING PIECE: 'Light a match and watch
till it goes out.'
1961: her first one-man show in New York, in which
fifteen works were what she calls INSTRUCTUER;
'Something that emerged from instruction and yet not
quite emerged - not quite structured - never quite struc-
tured --- like an unfinished church with a sky ceiling.'
One of these works which was described by a critic as 'a
grimy unstrung canvas with a hole in it' is SMOKE
PAINTING: 'Light canvas or any finished painting with
a cigarettes at any time for any length of time. See the smoke
movement. The painting ends when the whole canvas is
gone.'* For Ono, paintings like Event do end: an ad-
ditional act in life; something to solve the temptation of
insanity.
Other works in her 1961 show were, PAINTING TO
BE STEPPED ON: 'Leave a piece of canvas or finished
painting on the floor or in the street.'* A + B PAINTING;
'Cut out a circle on canvas. A. Place a numeral figure, a
roman letter, or a katakanao on canvas B at an arbitrary
point. Place canvas A on canvas B and hang them together.
The figure on canvas B may show, may show partially, or
may not show. You may use old paintings, photographs, etc.
instead of blank canvases.'* PAINTING FOR THE
WIND: 'Make a hole. Leave it in the wind.'* PAINT-
ING TO SEE THE SKIES: 'Drill two holes into a can-
vas. Hang it where you can see the sky. (Change the place
of hanging. Try both the front and the rear windows, to
see if the skies are different.')* PAINTING TO LET
THE EVENING LIGHT GO THROUGH: 'Hang a
bottle behind a canvas. Place the canvas where the west
light comes in. The painting will exist when the bottle
creates a shadow on the canvas, or it does not have to
exist. The bottle may contain liquor, water, grasshoppers,
ants or singing insects, or it does not have to contain.'*
BLOOD PIECE: 'Use your blood to paint. Keep painting
until you faint (A). Keep painting until you die (B).'*
These and the others in the show were designed to be
done by anybody although at the time it was not apparent
to most observers and as well the works had been made by
Ono, they were regarded as going in one direction only:
purely auto-destructive. Actually all her paintings exist
in two phases. (1) The instruction phase; which may be
compared to a musical composition; written, copywritten,
distributed, and generally at large for anybody to make
(perform) and show (2) the existence of the particular
piece, which generally has some aspect which is in a state
of flux. Sometimes this may be only one-way, sometimes
it may be oscillating, or the piece may just need to be
refuelled, so to speak.
The one aspect which is considered so important in
most painting, the graphic element, or visual design, is
almost never stated except in the vaguest way as in A + B
PAINTING, and like a Swiss Patent, it is never clear
exactly how the formula goes. This is left up to the indi-

"A + B Painting" ('61) by Yoko Ono for "INSTRUCTIVE AUTO-DESTRUCTION" by Anthony Cox in "Art and Artists", August, 1966

1961: her first one-man show in New York, in which
fifteen works were what she calls INSTRUCTUER;
See the smoke
movement. The painting ends when the whole canvas is
gone.'* For Ono, paintings like Event do end: an ad-
ditional act in life; something to solve the temptation of
insanity.
Other works in her 1961 show were, PAINTING TO
BE STEPPED ON: 'Leave a piece of canvas or finished
painting on the floor or in the street.'* A + B PAINTING;
'Cut out a circle on canvas. A. Place a numeral figure, a
roman letter, or a katakanao on canvas B at an arbitrary
point. Place canvas A on canvas B and hang them together.
The figure on canvas B may show, may show partially, or
may not show. You may use old paintings, photographs, etc.
instead of blank canvases.'* PAINTING FOR THE
WIND: 'Make a hole. Leave it in the wind.'* PAINT-
ING TO SEE THE SKIES: 'Drill two holes into a can-
vas. Hang it where you can see the sky. (Change the place
of hanging. Try both the front and the rear windows, to
see if the skies are different.')* PAINTING TO LET
THE EVENING LIGHT GO THROUGH: 'Hang a
bottle behind a canvas. Place the canvas where the west
light comes in. The painting will exist when the bottle
creates a shadow on the canvas, or it does not have to
exist. The bottle may contain liquor, water, grasshoppers,
ants or singing insects, or it does not have to contain.'*
BLOOD PIECE: 'Use your blood to paint. Keep painting
until you faint (A). Keep painting until you die (B).'*
These and the others in the show were designed to be
done by anybody although at the time it was not apparent
to most observers and as well the works had been made by
Ono, they were regarded as going in one direction only:
purely auto-destructive. Actually all her paintings exist
in two phases. (1) The instruction phase; which may be
compared to a musical composition; written, copywritten,
distributed, and generally at large for anybody to make
(perform) and show (2) the existence of the particular
piece, which generally has some aspect which is in a state
of flux. Sometimes this may be only one-way, sometimes
it may be oscillating, or the piece may just need to be
refuelled, so to speak.
The one aspect which is considered so important in
most painting, the graphic element, or visual design, is
almost never stated except in the vaguest way as in A + B
PAINTING, and like a Swiss Patent, it is never clear
exactly how the formula goes. This is left up to the indi-
vidual who is to construct the work and how he feels about
such things. For the maker of the work and the audience
this opens up all sorts of possibilities. One is able to
observe certain relationships between art and life that are
usually overlooked in purely graphic art. Instead of saying
how the hell did he do that one might say why the hell do
I have to do that. The owner and/or maker of the painting

Wild Flowers (Page 24 & 25)
WILD STRAWBERRY
Fragaria yirginiana
[Rose family}
THE Wild Strawberry is surely the most delicious of all our native fruits. It makes a most pleasant appeal to sight, smell, and taste, and most people consider it to be superior in flavor to the garden varieties. Long before the white man came to these shores the Indians cultivated this plant for food and bruised the berries and mixed them with meal to make bread.
BLOOMING SEASON: April-June.
WHERE FOUND:
Woods, fields, and roadsides; Newfoundland to South Dakota, southward to Florida and Oklahoma. FLOWERS: Of delicate texture, with five white petals and a central group of yellow stamens. PLANT: Perennial, 6 to 8 inches tall, creeping and extending itself by runners which form new plants at their tips. Leaves long-stalked, each of three wedge-shaped, toothed leaflets.
BOUNCING BET, or SOAPWORT
Saponaria officinalis
[Pink family}
BOUNCING BET grows plentifully and in ever-widening colonies in soils that are too dry for many of our summer flowers. Originally brought from Europe and planted in colonial gardens, it escaped its bounds and is now common in our landscape. It is a pretty flower with a pleasing fragrance, particularly after nightfall. Its juice forms a lather with water which is useful for removing grease spots from woolens.
BLOOMING SEASON: June-September.
WHERE FOUND:
Roadsides, fields, banks, waste places; common east of the Rockies, also in California. FLOWERS: In dense phlox-like clusters, each with five pink or whitish petals, 1 inch in diameter. PLANT: Perennial, 1 to 2 feet tall, spreading by underground stems. Stems erect, leafy. Leaves in pairs, ovate, 2 to 3 inches long, sessile.
Scrabble pendant BLUE FLOWER, with sterling silver bail, organza necklace, in a complementing gift box
I have made this beautiful pendant using vintage Scrabble tiles and fine Italian, French and Belgian craft paper. I have then painted small details by hand, and added micro findings to add texture – it is then coated in a resin high gloss sealer for a secure and lustrous finish.
It comes with complimenting organza ribbon necklace with sterling silver/silver plated components and you will receive it in a beautiful matching gift box, hand decorated by me to complement the necklace and make a lovely and unique gift (a box might slightly vary from the photo, since I have just bought some beautiful tin boxes that are a bit bigger and longer - PLEASE ZOOM ON THE LAST PHOTO - which makes them perfect for necklaces:)- they will always be hand-decorated to match the pendant).
Scrabble pendants are about 20 mm square (0.75” x 0.75”) and hang from a sterling silver bail. The organza necklace is 55 cm long (21,7 inch), with sterling silver clasp.
Please convo me with any specific wishes you might have (eg. necklace color, length, etc)- I will be happy to help!
Each of my pendants is unique - due to their handmade nature, they may slightly vary from the photograph.
Thank you.

Spring time.
Robert Frost (1915)
Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.
Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.
And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.
For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.

(Prom)ising Valentine...(warning: big hair ahead!)
I know...I'm overusing the parenthesed theme thing lately! With Valentine's Day upon us, I thought I'd dig through my old albums and find the oldest pic I had of Todd and I on Valentine's Day....well, to my surprise, I don't have any! I have pictures of vases of flowers he gave me for Valentine's Day, but no really good oldies of the two of us. BUT what I did come across were these old faithful PROM pictures :) Once I found the first year (1991), I had to keep perusing the albums for the others (oops...chose to attend with a friend my senior year--poor Todd :) I can still remember being so petrified to ask my parents if I could "go to the prom" my freshman year...they agreed, but the deal was that since it wasn't my own prom year, I wouldn't get to do the whole "go-out-and-pick-a-dress" thing until my junior year so I had to settle for whatever my mom found for me (thanks, mom, for that lovely white lacy number and for apparently contacting Madonna for her gloves--ha!...by they way, looking at the mermaid-pink picture, I didn't do much better selecting my own dresses--hee-hee!); ) What memories (skinny arms...how I'd love to have you again!) O.K., back to the point of all this, which is...my sweetheart of a husband has since transitioned from a PROMising Valentine to my FOREVER Valentine...love him to infinity times two :)

The Shy Flower
This flower is of the plant which is called "Lajjabati" in Bengal. Which means "Shy". This is because of the Seismonastic movement produced by the plant on touch.
Scientific name of the Plant is Mimosa Pudica.
The Sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica L.) is a creeping annual or perennial herb often grown for its curiosity value: the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched, re-opening within minutes. Mimosa pudica is native to Brazil, but is now a pantropical weed. Other names given to this curious plant are Humble plant, TickleMe Plant tm, Shame plant, Sleeping grass, Prayer Plant, Touch-me-not, Makahiya (Philippines, meaning "shy"), Mori Vivi (West Indies), mate-loi (false death) (Tonga). The Chinese name for this plant translates to "shyness grass". The species epithet, pudica, is Latin for "bashful" or "shrinking", because of its curious nature and easy procreation. Its Sinhala name is Nidikumba, where 'nidi' means 'sleep'. The seeds are currently marketed to children under the name "TickleMe Plant"[1]. The stem is erect in young plants, but becomes creeping or trailing with age. The stem is slender, branching, and sparsely to densely prickly, growing to a length of 1.5 m (5 ft). The leaves are bipinnately compound, with one or two pinnae pairs, and 10-26 leaflets per pinna. The petioles are also prickly. Pedunculate (stalked) pale pink or purple flower heads arise from the leaf axils. The globose to ovoid heads are 8-10 mm in diameter (excluding the stamens). On close examination, it is seen that the floret petals are red in their upper part and the filaments are pink to lavender. The fruit consists of clusters of 2-8 pods from 1-2 cm long each, these prickly on the margins. The pods break into 2-5 segments and contain pale brown seeds some 2.5 mm long.
Mimosa pudica is well known for its rapid plant movement. In the evening the leaflets will fold together and the whole leaf droops downward. It then re-opens at sunrise. This type of motion has been termed nyctinastic movement. The leaves also close up under various other stimuli, such as touching, warming, or shaking. The stimulus can also be transmitted to neighbouring leaves. These types of movements have been termed seismonastic movements. The cause is a loss of turgor pressure. The movement is caused by "a rapid loss of pressure in strategically situated cells that cause the leaves to droop right before one’s eyes".
Flowers
This is a type of perennial sweet pea which I've planted to disguise the water butt. Last year it looked so feeble I was surprised it didn'e keel over and die. This year it's rampant. So there you go.
