Cartier Watch Movement
- In horology, a movement is the internal mechanism of a clock or watch, as opposed to the case, which encloses and protects the movement, and the face which displays the time. The term originated with mechanical timepieces, whose movements are made of many moving parts.
- Cartier was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1925 to 1968.
- Cartier is a station on the Orange Line of the Montreal Metro rapid transit system, operated by the Societe de transport de Montreal (STM). It is located in Pont-Viau, Laval, Quebec, Canada . It is part of the extension of this line into Laval and opened on April 28, 2007.

- French explorer who explored the St. Lawrence river and laid claim to the region for France (1491-1557)

Another picture from the day Jennifer (Jen's Photography) and I went into Chicago. I was watching for a different way of shooting the Cartier doorway and got lucky as this picture unfolded in front of my lens. I really like the contrasts within the frame and the variation of colors. Sometime luck is what you need.

Little vignettes of time, snatched moments, a digital flick book if you like..

Dressed in Sunday Best for a Castration, 1967
For me, as an 11 year old it was an exciting occasion, so I put on my best dress.
There wasn’t too much entertainment on our cattle station in the 1960’s. Going to the cattle yards to watch the branding or the breaking in of the horses was a chance for the women and children to take a break and watch the men at work.
My father had decided that he would expand into breeding pigs to supply the Northern Territory with pork. One day he brought home two boars and three sows in the back of the cattle truck to commence the breeding program.
No one knew much about pigs, but before we knew it, there were about 300 pigs wandering around the station. We had to build a special set of yards and muster them on horseback. They are very slippery creatures to catch, so my father ordered a special pig cradle. It was to hold the young male pigs secure on their backs to castrate them.
The whole station had turned out to watch the action. Mum brought the camera along to record this momentous occasion for the testing of this latest technology in pig castration equipment, imported from ‘down south.’
In the photo, you can see our fencer, Olly Kerola, and the two Aboriginal brothers, Banjo and Georgie Long, as well as the head stockman, Sandy Shaw, all holding the squealing piglet in the cradle while my father removes its testicles.
My brother Billy is doing his very best to be in the picture.
And in the front, there is me, in my new dress made by my grandmother in Katherine. I am holding the bucket of bloodied water with disinfectant in it, for my father, Bill Tapp, to wash his hands and the pocket knife between each castration.
It sure was worth getting dressed up for.
This story was created as part of an ABC Open Top End workshop on the Moment Behind the Photo Project, at Katherine Regional Arts.
Sunset Census Series: 18 of 34
Allow me to introduce a brand new model! Her name is Erika Nagel. What a great girl, and some very great pictures to come out of the chemistry we developed!
For me what really stands out about this shoot is the when and where of how.
The location? Britannia beach. Why is this so special? Well, I grew up not far from this beach here in Ottawa. I know live down town and I very rarely get back here. Something very interesting happened after this shoot was over. First let me give you a tiny background on me and the Summer of 2006. I went a little nuts and did about 15 full day all out shoots almost non stop. So much that I’m still going through them!
So much so that by the time I was finished shooting Erika my left eye was actually hurting so much it was going out of focus!
So after this shoot I decided to just sit and relax and watch the sunset, (with my one good eye).
So the bench I planted myself was located behind a volleyball tournament with the sun behind the players, silhouetting them.
While they where playing they began kicking up allot of sand dust. The entire scene had this eerie other world feeling.
Yet I've no pictures of that. Not because I was out of film. Forced by my one bad eye I was reminded that I don't have to take a picture of everything. Sometimes it’s nice to just sit and watch.

My new watch arrived in today's post. This was a birthday/Christmas present from my other half. I didn't know what to tell him to get me and thought it would be nice to have something that 'meant' something. I wanted us to go shopping for it together but that was not easy job so I went online selected some favourites and he liked this one best so it seemed to be the one to go for. Just need to get the strap adjusted

Half a million people march in London to stop the cuts. 26.03.2011
The Trades Union Congress' (TUC) "March for the Alternative" today saw the streets of Central London choked solid with at least half a million Public Sector employees, Disability Rights and anti-war groups, students and many others who had travelled from the furthest corners of Great Britain to send a clarion call to the Cameron government that people are not going to idly stand by and silently watch Cameron and his chancellor George Osborne destroy the very heart of British Public Services for nothing more than archetypical right-wing ideology.
Huge, swingeing cuts across the entire range of Public Services by the Conservatives are designed to hand over control of the most vital state welfare functions to greedy, profit-driven, completely unaccountable private companies and to break the collective bargaining power and influence of the Trades Unions, whose members are being laid off by the tens of thousands under the premise of saving the economy which was almost destroyed by the same bankers and hedge-fund managers who now sit on Conservative government advisory panels.
The carnival-atmosphere march slowly threaded its way towards Hyde Park where rousing speeches by assorted Trades Union representatives sent out a call for concerted action to fight every single cut every step of the way, and to protect our vital services from Conservative dogma, which only favours the already-wealthy at the expense of the disposable poor and weak.
To date not a single banker has been tried and imprisoned for their outrageous, fraudulent and undoubtedly dishonest (if not illegal) practices leading directly to the crash of 2008 - a situation which could never have occured if the Financial Services Industry was firmly regulated by government. Tragically in the last thirty years the banks and their equally-greedy doppelgangers running the hedge funds have connived with supine Parliamentarians to dismantle huge swathes of vital regulation put in place by previous governments... such regulatory checks and balances being labelled as a massive hinderance which stopped the banks from making obscene, unfettered profit, albeit fraudulent.
Instead we now see the bankers picking up exactly where they left off, absolutely unapologetic, giving themselves billions of pounds in bonuses whilst the poorest in our midst are having essential support and benefits axed as the Conservatives brazenly use the compliant Murdoch press to demonize the poor and the disabled, labelling them all as mere fraudsters and parasites.
Eleswhere, predictably, the usual cohort of violent "Anarchists" - many seemingly associated with University College Union - wrought their usual havoc along Oxford Street, parts of the West End and Piccadilly, targetting businesses run by companies publicly exposed by whistleblowers as using massive, complex, completely opaque tax avoidance schemes in Tax Havens - and doing illegal "sweetheart" deals with the Inland Revenue to avoid paying their fair share of corporation taxes, which, if they were forced to do so would pay this country's deficit off without public services being axed. Cameron and Osborne choose instead to protect this immoral status-quo, which is unsurprising - the Cabinet reportedly contains 14 multi-millionaires, and the revolving door between government and bank directorships is both insidious and notorious.
The anarchists smashed windows, threw paint bombs and fireworks and had running battles with the police across Central London, and, much to the fury of the grown-ups has poisoned the moral high ground which was being gently but brilliantly occupied by UK Uncut with their humorous, pacific occupations of the same premises where they have in the past set up temporary libraries, hospitals and creches in their intelligently organised grass-roots campaigns to shame the government to force companies to pay their dues.
Sadly the anarchists' aggressive direct-action (and the thousands of adrenaline-inducing photographs of their actions which will now completely dominate the national dialogue for weeks) instantly and conveniently paves the way for the Cameron government to impose severe restrictions on public protests and the right to assemble in the future. Costs, budgets and the need to "protect legitimate businesses from mindless criminal attack" will be the reasons given. Many people suspect that the anarchist groups contain deep-cover police and/or MI5 officers who are also maybe agent provocateurs, sometimes leading the violence. This can no longer be instantly dismissed as mere conspiracy theory as recent discoveries of police infiltration and manipulation of peace campaign groups (including the Quakers) over the last decade have now been proven in court, and discussed in Parliament.
Though people are clearly very, very angry with the Tories and their outright election lies
Battle of the Bulge: Panther Tank in Houffalize (nice story attached)
This Panther tank was part of the German offensive in the Battle of the Bulge, and it was knocked out and found by Allied troops upside down near the Ourthe river. This Panther, a G model, had a 75 mm gun
This picture was taken in Houffalize, which is about 10 miles north of Foy.
Belgian Residents Thank Battle of Bulge Vets
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service
HOUFFALIZE, Belgium, Dec. 17, 2004 -- Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge got a hero's welcome today from local residents who endured some of the most brutal fighting of the battle between U.S. and German troops here 60 years ago.
Schoolchildren from Houffalize, Belgium, join veterans of the Battle of the Bulge during 60th anniversary ceremonies in their town Dec. 17. Photo by Donna Miles
(Click photo for screen-resolution image); high-resolution image available.
Memorial ceremonies and a special Mass here commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge and civilians as well as troops who died here during the fighting.
Houffalize, on the banks of the Meuse River north of Bastogne, was a highly strategic crossroads during World War II. German troops fought bitterly to maintain their hold on the town, which was virtually destroyed during the battle and endured the deaths of some 200 of its citizens within just a few hours.
However, the U.S. 2nd, 3rd and 11th Armored divisions finally were able to break the Nazi stronghold here, after which Houffalize became a linkup point for the 1st and 3rd Armies as they forced the Germans to retreat to the east.
Sixty years later, residents here clapped as American veterans returned to the city to attend a church service and waved U.S. and Belgian flags during wreath- laying ceremonies at memorials to local citizens killed here and to their American liberators.
Local schoolchildren presented the veterans certificates declaring them honorary citizens of the town and expressed personal thanks on behalf of their townspeople.
"We salute you and pay respect to our American friends," Mayor Jose Lutgen told the veterans during a reception following the ceremonies. He recalled "those terrible days" when Houffalize had reached what seemed like rock bottom, then to be freed "by young soldiers who landed in the midst of enemy fire."
"You all were heroes," Lutgen said. "And today, 60 years later, we welcome you again as the heroes who helped us retrieve our lost freedoms."
Daniel Denning, principal deputy to the assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs, whose father was among the soldiers who fought at Houffalize, praised the veterans for overcoming severe hardships as they continued the fight in the Ardennes.
"You fought for freedom and for the people of Belgium and Luxembourg," Denning said. "But you also fought for each other." He likened the Battle of the Bulge soldiers to the 101st Airborne Division's Easy Company, popularized in the "Band of Brothers" book and television miniseries.
Denning called the 60th anniversary observances a fitting time "to commemorate the valor and sacrifice of those who fought here" and particularly to remember those who paid the ultimate price. Their sacrifices, he said, "will never be forgotten."
"I, like you, will never forget," agreed U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Tom Korologos. "And I assure you that the American people will also never forget."
Herbert Ridyard, who fought here as a private first class with the 94th Infantry Division during the battle, said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of appreciation the veterans have received throughout their visit to Luxembourg and Belgium.
"The love of these people is what I'm going home with," he said. "It's been absolutely incredible."
"I'm very humbled and honored and overwhelmed by the Belgian people," agreed Charles Nelson, who 60 years ago was a private first class with the 87th Infantry Division. "This has truly been a mountaintop experience."
Nelson received a big hug during a reception here from Josiane Pelzer, a Luxembourger whose family was part of the resistance movement against their German occupiers during the war.
"My family was on the list to go to a concentration camp," Pelzer said. "I owe so very much to these soldiers. If it hadn't been for them and what they did for us, I would never have been born!"
Nelson said it's been an enlightening experience to return to the Ardennes with the fellow soldiers he served with six decades ago "to reconstruct what happened here and to see it through the eyes of the local people."
Reliving his person history, he said, "has been very emotional."
Army Maj. Gen. David Zabecki, commander of Task Force Ardennes 60, said he wants to ensure the 60th anniversary commemoration activities are "as meaningful as po

Below Zero, 1930
Below Zero. MGM, 1930. Directed by James Parrott. Camera: George Stevens. With Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Charlie Hall.
Laurel & Hardy are street musicians, whose rendering of "In The Good Old Summertime" on accordion and bassoon during a snowstorm wins them neither friends nor monetary reward. Frustration follows frustration, until finally their instruments are kicked into the street and, on cue, demolished by a passing truck. Cold and hungry, they have the good fortune to find a wallet in the street, and rush into a nearby eatery. Ordering a sumptuous meal, and anxious to share their good fortune, they invite the local policeman to join them as their guest. Graciously he acquiesces—but when the bill is presented, it develops that the wallet they have found is his. Attempting to escape his wrath, Hardy hides in a trash can, and is collected by the garbage truck; Laurel hides in a rain-barrel, from which he emerges, grotesquely bloated, having drunk all the water.
A curious, bizarre, almost surrealist comedy, Below Zero is methodically paced (without being slow) and almost without dialogue until the closing sequence in the restaurant, where Hardy orders the most succulent of dishes and engages in bantering small talk with the cop. The early exchanges with non-music-lovers in the street (one of them is an elderly lady who smashes a milk bottle on Hardy's head, and destroys his accordion) are likewise largely silent. Yet it is a situational rather than a sight-gag comedy, one of their oddest, and if not one of their funniest, then certainly one of their cleverest.

Then THAT ONE spoke
Obama’s victory speech:
IF there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.
It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.
It’s the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.
It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.
I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he’s fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead.
I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.
I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation’s next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the White House. And while she’s no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.
To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics – you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you’ve sacrificed to get it done.
But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to – it belongs to you.
I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn’t start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington – it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.
It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation’s apathy; who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from this Earth. This is your victory.
I know you didn’t do this just to win an election and I know you didn’t do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime – two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor’s bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you – we as a people will get there.
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make a

Up The Creek Without A Paddle
It’s been cloudy day on the South Coast of the UK today so had to resort to searching though my archives and found this image taken of the sunset at my favourite location, Bosham, West Sussex last September to brighten up a dreary day.
It was a lovely still evening at the warm colours of the sunset were reflecting across the water of the creek highlighting the reflection of the bow of the foreground boat without a paddle!
1/10 second exposure using Lee 0.9 ND grad filter.
Thanks for any comments you wish to leave.

Dodo (always) in Action!
My five years old nephew Dodo (Daniel) in action. Dodo is always in action. I won’t try to describe him here, because I really don’t know where to start! His energy is limitless, his questions are endless, his curiosity can drive any adult insane, he is also extremely strong willed, and controlling, and would never take a “no” for an answer unless you explain to him why (in details!). I’ve seen him drive more than one adult (apart from his parents) to the point of hysteria! And yes, that includes me!
He started eating by himself by the age of 10 months—he refused someone else would feed him or teach him how to use the spoon if he was going to feed himself, and so he taught himself how to use the spoon! He wanted to get married by the age of four, and just recently he advised me to finish university first, get a bigger place then get married because our apartment is too small for my kids to play in! (At least he is much wiser than most “adults” I know!) If he keeps going like this I think he will move out by the age of eight! And he told my sister that he was praying to Jesus to give him a wife!
There is no such a thing as speaking in codes or signs around him, because he can decipher anything and understands it! My sister and her husband has decided before they had kids that there would be no video games for their children. I agree with their upbringing of their kids because this has kept Dodo so alert of his surroundings and always learning. (I have a couple of racing video games demos on my PC just for him and his sister to play with me when they come over; which is only about 15 minutes of video games every two weeks.) They even limit their TV watching time, and what they watch.
At the age of 3 after an afternoon car ride with Dodo that made me feel as if I was on a TV show where I had to answer as many questions as possible we came to a red traffic light, and so he asked me, “Fadi, why did we stop?” I told him, “Because the traffic light is red.” He asked, “What is that suppose to mean?” I told him, “That means we have to stop so the other cars can go by.” He asked, “Why red?” I told him, “Because red means danger, and we can see red easier than other colours.” He asked, “Why?” I told him, “Because of its wave length.” He asked, “What is a wavelength?” That’s when I thought, “Somebody buy him a Nintendo, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!”
I love Dodo a lot, but a couple of hours a week of him is more than enough for me!
PS: he refuses to call me ‘uncle’—so he has always called me just ‘Fadi’!

sonic youth button
Nice lazy Sunday today. Ed and I went to the hill to grab lunch at Jamjuree and poster. He ran by a bookstore that was having a moving sale and bought two armfuls of books. I grabbed some coffee at Ladro, booked over to West Seattle with him and dropped by Cupcake Royale, Easy Street, and a couple thrift stores. Then we went back over to his place and watched Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Something really funny happened last night. It was so pathetic, I almost wish I had the entire episode on video. I was grabbing a blanket off a bed and heading towards the couch when I tripped on the edge of the bed while walking off and crashed face first into the facing wall. I then proceeded to slowly slide off it sideways. I have this weird thing where I laugh manically when in pain, so there I was on the ground clutching my foot (which had incidentally gotten caught between the bedpost and mattress) rolling on the ground howling and attempting to conceive of what had just happened. Ed assures me it was the funniest thing he had seen a long time. I'll take a picture of my bruises later...
Oh! And I got the top I'm wearing at Red Light in the U- District for $3.00 on Friday night before Sound Off! That store is my new favorite place in the whole entire world.
Night Walk - Still Trying to Harness The Flare
I've been watching way too many Friday Night Lights episodes (David Boyd rocks flare like no other), the new Tokina flares and awful lot, and we typically walk the dogs around 8PM these days 'cause it's a bit cooler.
So I've now got a bunch of golden overexposed flare shots.
Second Tokina here tomorrow (under-rated 70-210mm), Nikkor 180mm f2.8 here in 2 weeks - I can't wait. Don't miss the 18-200mm Nikkor at all. Good riddance!
