Summer Sesame Cucumber salad

Summer Sesame Cucumber salad

Cucumbers (sliced paper-thin lengthwise with a vegetable peeler or mandoline) red onion, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, sea salt and cracked pepper.

Ok, what's more cool and refreshing AND guilt-free in the summertime than water vegetables? Slicing the cucumbers lengthwise gives a different mouth feel, and the sesame oil imparts a tasty nuttiness that stands up to the cucumber and onion. I was inspired to make this after craving my favorite Japanese seaweed salad with the sesame oil. Crisp, fresh, and great for summer picnics!

Ancient Egyptian Musical Instrument

ancient egyptian musical instrument

    musical instrument
  • (Musical instruments (Legend of Zelda)) , occasionally called Legend of Zelda or Zelda, is a high fantasy action-adventure video game series created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka.

  • any of various devices or contrivances that can be used to produce musical tones or sounds

  • A musical instrument is constructed or used for the purpose of making the sounds of music. In principle, anything that produces sound can serve as a musical instrument. The history of musical instruments dates back to the beginnings of human culture.

    ancient egyptian
  • (Ancient Egypt) Evidence of human habitation in the Nile Valley since the Paleolithic era appears in the form of artifacts and rock carvings along the Nile terraces and in the desert oases. In the 10th millennium BC, a culture of hunter-gatherers and fishers replaced a grain-grinding culture.

  • (Ancient egypt) Ancient Egypt was an ancient civilization of eastern North Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt.

  • Egyptian is the indigenous language of Egypt and a branch of the Afroasiatic language family. Written records of the Egyptian language have been dated from about 3400 BC, making it one of the oldest recorded languages known.

Tomb Reconstruction @musée du Louvre

Tomb Reconstruction @musée du Louvre

Reconstruction of a tomb from the eastern cemetery of Deir el-Medina (hill of Qurnet Murai)
New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reigns of Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III, 1479-1425 BC.

Most of our knowledge of the ancient Egyptian culture comes from objects that were associated with tombs and temples.

This vitrine displays a selection of grave goods found in the tombs of the western cemetery of the hill of Qurnet Murai (near the site of Deir el-Medina), excavated from 1933 by the French archaeologist Bernard Bruyere.
These tombs date from the early 18th Dynasty. Although they belonged to a class that was modest if not poor, they contained a wealth of material: everyday objects that had been used by the owners during their lifetime.

The contents of a tomb in the early 18th Dynasty: the coffin

During this period, a typical middle class tomb contained a coffin in which the mummy was placed. The coffins found in this cemetery form a homogenous group: rarely very elaborate, they are generally rectangular or anthropoid in shape, and decorated with bright colors on a white background. The one displayed here belonged to a woman whose name we do not know. The box is adorned with panels containing (clumsily traced) udjat eyes - symbols of physical integrity - together with two images of the god Anubis portrayed as a recumbent dog, and characters that have never really been identified (due to the absence of inscriptions). The convex lid is decorated with an attractive multicolored check pattern.

Other items in the tomb: everyday objects

Most of the objects that accompanied the deceased into the cemetery were everyday items of practical use. Wickerwork baskets or chests contained toiletry articles such as unguent pots, kohl sticks, pots of rouge, wooden or ivory combs, hairpins, razors, and often mirrors like the one belonging to the lady Madja (another occupant of this cemetery). There might also be receptacles carved from hollowed-out bovid horns, closed with wooden stoppers. Pieces of furniture featured too: beds, chests, chairs, stools, bedheads, and mats. There was plentiful crockery, with stone or terracotta vases, cups, plates, and bowls, still containing the remains of food and liquid. Pieces of fabric were included too, together with clothing, sandals, jewelry, tools, and musical instruments such as the lyre displayed here. A statue of the deceased might also be placed in the tomb.

The site of Deir el-Medina, and Bernard Bruyere's excavations

From 1922 to 1951, this major site was meticulously excavated and studied by Bernard Bruyere, who published the results of his work annually. It is located in the hollow of a small desert valley in the Theban mountains, and is particularly interesting in that it conserves important traces of the village and tombs of the workers who constructed and decorated the royal tombs in the Valleys of the Kings and Queens during the New Kingdom.

The archaeological data and exceptional material collected from this site constitute a hitherto unequalled source of information. The funerary material exhibited here comes from the "Eastern cemetery", on the western slope of the hill of Qurnet Murai (which borders the site of Deir el-Medina to the east). Its occupants, however, do not appear to have belonged to the community of tomb workers - there are no inscriptions or titles that could confirm such a hypothesis."

Gifts of the Egyptian government, division of excavation finds, 1935 and 1939.

Exploring the Castle

Castello Sforzesco, Milano (Italy).

8 notes guitar tuner

    guitar tuner
  • An electronic tuner is a device used by musicians to detect and display the pitch of notes played on musical instruments. notes
  • A brief record of facts, topics, or thoughts, written down as an aid to memory

  • (note) a short personal letter; "drop me a line when you get there"

  • (note) make mention of; "She observed that his presentation took up too much time"; "They noted that it was a fine day to go sailing"

  • A short informal letter or written message

  • (note) a brief written record; "he made a note of the appointment"

  • A short comment on or explanation of a word or passage in a book or article; an annotation

    8
  • eight: being one more than seven

  • eight: the cardinal number that is the sum of seven and one

My Pedalboard (Revised)

My Pedalboard (Revised)

(January 2009)
I recently got my hands on the Digitech HardWire DL-8 Delay pedal, so that brought about another revision to the pedalboard. I removed the really old Boss pitch shifter/delay and analog delay pedals. I may put back the Boss analog delay, but I'm not sure I'll ever need three delay pedals on there!

I also moved the VariOboost to the top row, which puts it in the effects loop instead of in front of the amp. This makes it's effect MUCH more pronounced. I have it set to tame the insane amount of midrange that I can't otherwise dial out of my Mesa Stiletto. (I don't need it with my Lone Star, though).

That leaves an empty spot on the bottom row for another addition. I'm thinking about the Catalinbread Serrano Picoso boost. We'll see.

One other note....
Those Digitech HardWire pedals have an interior switch that allows you to turn true bypass on or off. I turned true bypass OFF in the reverb pedal, since it's the last one in the chain, and the signal is making a 20 foot trip to the pedalboard and another 20 foot trip back to the amp. The others are true bypass, so I thought it'd be a good idea for one of them to have a buffer on. The same is true for the bottom row - the MXR phaser is non-true bypass, so I have a buffer there, too.
(This is probably way more than anyone wanted to know.)

Here's what's on it, in order of signal flow (right to left, bottom to top).

BEFORE THE AMP:
Peterson Strobo Stomp tuner (v1)
Keeley Compressor
Fulltone OCD overdrive (v1)
BB Preamp overdrive (with cool copper finish)
MXR EVH Phase 90

IN THE AMP'S EFFECTS LOOP:
Catalinbread VariOboost parametric eq/boost
MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay
Digitech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper
Digitech HardWire RV-7 Digital Reverb

AND FINALLY:
Amp footswitch (Stiletto switch works identically for my Lone Star)

I actually was tagged ages ago but I cba. And I haven't tagged anyone else (sorry) becuase i think they would have all been tagged at least once or they will be tagged in the near future.

1: I am the worlds biggest procrastinator, hence the description. It doesnt help becuase I study four subjects at college. I know I am becuase I still dont have a proper job.

2: I have perfect pitch. Sing me a note, i can tell which note it is and whether its sharp or flat. Handy if you've ever lost your guitar tuner. (It also helps me when I do improvised solos on any of the four instruments I play; clarinet, guitar, piano, saxaphone.

3: Never had a girlfriend, got to the asking out stage and was too nervous.

4: I have a massive mole on the back of my head. It's a birth mark, I want to keep it.

5: Yes, this is my facebook profile picture and, yes, I don't care.

6: I am an TFOL with a fair amount of bricks (im only 17), I can recite every level from the first three Spyro the Dragon games, I design my own video games, i write kickass video game soundtracks, but im not very smart atall. I got a D, a C and a B at AS level and my gcse's werent too good either. Im probably the worlds stupidest LEGO geek, but that's probably going too far.

7: I once wore a wetsuit in public when I was at least 25 miles from the nearest beach.

8: I have been to cornwall about 15 times. It's getting really boring now.

9: I haven't built much lately, becuase I am making a stop motion animation for college.

038. 'Stashin' Up Them Downbeats!

038. February 7, 2011

I have to say that these boys right here are my all time favourites. :) I absolutely hate the drama and stress of being in band now-a-days, yet and however, these boys make it worth while. We rarely ever pay attention because our music is so incredibly boring and easy, so we just goof around and I crack up everyday. So many inside jokes with these boys, and we go way back to when I first moved here. I feel like I can talk to them about anything, and it just goes to show you that everything happens for a reason; if I didn't play bass clarinet, I dunno what I'd do.

Basically I'm just thankful for my low reed boys. They make the end of the day a little more tolerable. :)

The Dough Rollers at Fox Theater Oakland 08-24-10

The Dough Rollers at Fox Theater Oakland 08-24-10

"We want people to listen to old music," says Malcolm Ford, 23-year-old member of The Dough Rollers. "It's good and we want to expose it." Indeed, The Dough Rollers owe a great deal to the past: Ford is the son of actor, Harrison; 20-year-old Jack Byrne, the offspring of Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne. Together with frequent collaborator fiddler Julia Tepper, the string band channels blues, Motown, and the stuff of yesteryear, and infuses it with a caliber of soul that belies their youth.

To go to a Dough Rollers show (which, to date, have primarily been in New York and Los Angeles) is to witness a spectacle. The audience might wait patiently for a venerable jazz man to reveal himself as the Wizard of Oz behind the band's impassioned, revivalist performances notes. But these guys are anything but impostors. Onstage, Ford is a man possessed, contorting his face to squeeze out notes that would make his idol, "Father of the Delta Blues" Charley Patton, proud. Ford and Byrne both look as if they strolled out of His Girl Friday: hair combed back, shirts tucked in. "I don't know if [how we dress] can be called an aesthetic," Byrne explains. "There's a lot of guys sagging their pants... We just don't want to look like assholes, we want to look like respectable human beings."

They revel in playing covers, of course, but the duo also writes a lot of original songs, incorporating an arsenal of instruments. Byrne, solid on vocals, is the master of guitar and Hawaiian guitar and coaxes the most astonishing sounds from his instruments. Ford expertly manipulates the mandolin, the kazoo, and washboards. "We each play a ton of instruments," Byrne explains. "There's lots of swapping going on." Though their eponymous first album won't come out until this summer, the band has a strong fan base online. "It's rare that someone hears [our music] and hates it," says Byrne, which sounds like tepid enthusiasm, but is actually acknowledgement of the band's specific look and sound. Attire aside, The Dough Rollers are, in short, an anomaly. "Our goal is to make a good song," he sums. "Something people can understand without it being stuffed down their throats. Something they won't forget ten minutes later." We won't forget.

This is where he opened a jazz club, called the Silver Stope. A couple times a year he would invite some of his old jazz friends over for a weekend of jamming. Merle liked clarinetist Bob Newman, then with the Fulton Street Jazz Band out of Sacramento, and invited Newman over for many of these sessions. Trumpet #7

Trumpet #7

The trumpet is upside down for this shot - the 3rd valve tuning slide is actually towards the bottom of the instrument. This is how I was holding the trumpet and the camera to get a shot of the valve casings, and I decided not to rotate it back for the final image.

Tuning slide close up BW-HDR

A close up of the Tuning slide on my sons Trumpet, this is a 5 shot HDR, I really liked this in color except for the Chromatic fringing I was getting (I've got a cheap camera) that all goes away in BW, and Chrome always looks cool...
