See what people are saying about us...
I returned from St. Lucia last month. Before going I had had a hard time trying to decide where to stay. I eventually wound up at "Deresidence" near the Botanic Gardens in Soufriere. I strongly recommend this place. It's very quiet, the owner, John Dorman, is friendly and accomodating, a man of patience. And the cost is very reasonable---US$50 a night for an excellent apartment which has breeze all day and night. There are fans; the ac didn't work so well, but you didn't really need it. The kitchen is well-equipped too.Good bath and toilet, lots of space, even a balcony to sit outside. John can connect you to Flora Louisy, a pleasant, honest woman who has a van and can take you wherever at better than average rates---she is also connected to the water taxi business down on the ocean front. She can take you, drop you and pick you up. It will work out cheaper than renting a car if you want to spend most of the day at the beach or hiking somewhere instead of driving around. The rides to and from the airport are expensive. Other than that, St. Lucia as seen from John Dorman's place and with the friendly Flora as driver was extremely pleasant and economical. Don't miss this

Disney's Polynesian [Village] Resort

This was the first hotel I ever stayed at in WDW so it will always be a special place for me. I've gone back and forth over the years trying to determine which is the better resort, the Polynesian or the Wilderness Lodge, and I've come to the conclusion that they are both equally great.

Besides the wonderful (and it truly is wonderful) theming and atmosphere at the Polynesian Resort...

The Polynesian has the monorail service to the Magic Kingdom as well as a short walk to the TTC to catch one to EPCOT. Along with the monorail, the Polynesian has the best resort room views on property--that of the Tahiti building-- with a picturesque view of Seven Seas Lagoon with the castle in the distance. What makes the Tahiti building (and other Lagoon facing buildings) also special is that you have prime viewing spots of the Kingdom's nightly fireworks from the comfort of your own room, or you can enjoy them from the beach just a short distance away. During the day, you can hear the train whistle at the Magic Kingdom all the way from across the Lagoon.

From personal experience, you can't go wrong staying in the Fiji, Tuvalu, or Tahiti building. But out of these, the Tahiti is by far the very best, once you stay there (in a Lagoon view room) you'll see for yourself-- and you'll probably become spoiled on your future visits.

To break it down, here are some reasons as to why the Polynesian is so great:

- Monorail service to Magic Kingdom (either from the lobby or the TTC) and EPCOT (a short walk to the TTC to catch the monorail)
- Ferry boat service to the Magic Kingdom ~ you have options!
- Huge rooms! I mean they are huge, they don't make them like this anymore
- Wonderful atmosphere throughout the entire grounds -- a big part of why this resort is so special
- Prime viewing spots (from lagoon-view rooms or the beach) for the Magic Kingdom's nightly fireworks AND the Electrical Water Pageant on Seven Seas Lagoon
- Watercraft rentals --with 2 lakes to ride around on-- I like renting the small (2 seater) boats that you can go pretty fast in, although they have gotten me in trouble with the Boston Whaler patrols on the lake...

I can't help it if I want to drive right up near the Magic Kingdom ferry boat to catch the waves they leave behind.... or do donuts on the lake near the shoreline for everyone to see.... or get to close to the Magic Kingdom's boat docks... or.....
: )

Also if you rent a watercraft, head near the old River Country waterpark and you will find a shoe tree -- their is a tree in the water with a ton of shoes thrown on it... they should still be there.

I captured the Polynesian lobby waterfall from a few different angles/spots (so I may upload a few variations), but I especially liked this one because of the colorful pink plant in the foreground.

blend so well with the surrounding scenery.

this last trip was light in terms of picture taking. when you travel with a large group of family members. each with their own agendas it ends up being really tough to fit your own in. for one you're always bringing up the rear whenever we're walking from one place to the next. and then there's missed visual opportunities everywhere..each time you curse yourself inside.

saturday night, after epcot closed, everyone was ready to head back to the hotel. I wanted to stay back and capture some night shots around with the tripod. I also had a plan to head back to the hotel (the holiday inn at hotel plaza blvd) that required me going to disney's beach resort, get on the bus to downtown disney and walk back to the hotel. this did not go well with the group. my wife was whatever about it saying its never enough for me. and my grandmother thought everyone was playing a game on her saying we left eddy at epcot. she even called me about 40 minutes after they left saying 'but eddy are you crazy? why would you want to stay in a park by yourself? how are you getting back?'.. anyway i got back to the hotel about 80 minutes after they left. the next morning i was the talk of the breakfast table.

-eddy didn't they kick you out?
-no.

-what's the point if the rides are closed?
-its not about the rides.

-and you walked from epcot to the hotel?
-no i took a bus from the hotel directly next to the world showcase to downtown disney and walked about a quarter mile to the hotel..its like walking from tomorrowland to adventureland.

-weren't you afraid someone was going to mug you?
-mug me? on disney property?

-you know you're obsessed right?
-no. not really. i just like taking pictures there. and even more so without the crowds.

they don't get it. but either way, its increasingly difficult for me to enjoy any picture taking if i'm with family so my question to all of you is...how do you find the time? are photowalks the solution? what if your wife doesn't like you going to disney by yourself?

Best hostel ever. As much as it looks like a sketchy area, it was actually the best possible spot to stay. It's right at the edge of Chinatown, and the other side of the street (where I took this from) is the edge of downtown/the financial district. It's a clean and (as far as I could tell) safe area, with absolutely everything within walking distance.

during the same moment as that "ride" photo i took a while ago. i actually sticked to that beach for more than an hour while kids were playing close to the waves. during the same moment i was playing with that heavy 300mm, and having a lot of fun. i would even say there's a weird feeling of being able to shoot people from far without them noticing it. it's a bit like if it was unfair, in a way.
mist and foggy vapors were slowly drifting from the ocean to reach the sand, it was awesome. i still have quite a few shots to process from that afternoon.

Cambridge House: Piccadilly

Cambridge House: Piccadilly

I last photographed Cambridge House eleven months ago and it looks considerably worse. There is a blue plaque on the wall stating that 'In This House Formerly a Royal Residence Lived Lord Palmerston (1784-1685) Prime Minister & Foreign Secretary' The ivy is now covering most of it. The entire row of buildings is empty and decaying.
In July 2011 the Reuben Brothers bought the estate for ?130 million and have planning consent for a six-star hotel and private members’ club.

Grade I listed. No.94 (the former Naval and Military Club) (including front wall and no.12 White Horse Street)", Town Mansion. 1756-1760 by Matthew Brettingham (1699-1769) for Lord Egremont. The present structure is the result of at least two and possibly three C19 building phases:one dating to c1822, when the house became the residence of the Marquess of Cholmondley, steward of the royal household and a friend of George IV; the second dating to after 1829 when the house assumed semi-royal status as the London house of the Duke of Cambridge, seventh son of George III; and finally after 1876 when the lease was taken by the Naval and Military Club. The architect for this final phase was J McVicar Anderson. Faced in Portland ashlar; courtyard elevations in brick with stone dressings. Front wall and gate piers of Portland stone and yellow brick, with wrought-iron gates and cast-iron lanterns and torcheres. Hipped roof of slate to forecourt. A detached Palladian styled hotel particulier set back from the street behind a forecourt, the right-hand side bounded by the return wall of no. 93 Piccadilly and the left by a single storey range of 3 windows to the forecourt with a tripartite window and rusticated basement to Piccadilly; the latter wing appears to date from the mid to late C19. Main block has three storeys and a seven-window range, three windows at centre project in a shallow, pedimented bay. The centre window, first floor, with serlian motif opens on to the 'Cambridge Room'. French doors to first-floor balcony; the windows with moulded architraves and pediments. Square windows with moulded architraves to second floor, or attic storey. Distyle in antis, Tuscan porch to entrance in centre range; Tuscan aedicule with pediment frames entrance. The first floor balcony and entrance porch are of a mid to late C19 date. All windows and doors flat arched unless otherwise noted. The interior is of exceptional interest, not just for the surviving works by Matthew Brettingham and the unkown early C19 architects, but also for MacVicar Anderson's works. The following description begins with entrance foyer and front hall to the west. The screen wall between, like most of the decorative detailing, is of c.1876, except for the marble fireplace, west wall, front hall, which appears to date from the late C18. The foyer, front hall, long corridor and passage into the single storey wing are floored with black and white tesserae. The long corridor runs along the western edge of the rear courtyard and is actually shared between 94 Piccadilly and 12 White Horse Street without visible break. The long corridor is formed from a series of rib-vaulted bays with Tuscan piers and responds. It dates to c1876, as does the Smoking Room which is entered about midway along the corridor's length. The Smoking Room is also the work of MacVicar Anderson; it has an L-shaped plan, one arm of which opens onto the interior courtyard; the other returns on a north-south axis to the forecourt and opens onto the stair wall (see below). The Smoking Room is articulated into a series of bays by luted Ionic pilasters and piers; richly moulded entablature fireplaces and door surrounds, some of the latter may be late C18 in date suggesting the style of this room was suggested by original work. In the north east corner of the room is a marble fireplace of authentic late C18 design; frieze of ivy leaves in subtle, elegant pattern; mythological figure in low relief and cameo portraits. Long corridor continues to the rear of the site, still within the limits of no.12 White Horse Street. Here, in a high single storey block of brick, is the coffee room, designed by MacVicar Anderson in a late C18 style: rectangular plan and lit by round-arched windows to the north; Ionic pilasters and columns; rectangular alcoves to north, east and west; pair of late C19 Adam-style fireplaces flanking alcove to north; above entablature a series of round-arched tympana; in the centre, ceiling heightens and has a coved cornice. Of particular note is the cast-iron verandah, consisting of slender elegantly proportioned cast-iron colonnettes with lean-to roof this runs along the west and north sides of the inner courtyard and appears to date from the 1820s or early 1830s; the stone balustrade on which it is carried may be of the same date or even somewhat later. The great stair hall is in the centre range, at the centre of the original blocks; the stair rises in three flights; its treads are very likely

DSC04138 Lanesborough House Hotel - Hyde Park Corner

DSC04138 Lanesborough House Hotel - Hyde Park Corner

In 1716 Henry Hoare, William Wogan, Robert Witham and Patrick Cockburn decided to open the Westminster Public Infirmary in Petty France, London in 1720, and quickly relocated to larger premises in Chapel Street in 1724. By 1732 the Governors were forced to seek an even larger building. The majority of the Governors favoured a house in Castle Lane but a minority preferred Lanesborough House.[1][2]
The original site was in Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner, originally built in 1719 by the James Lane, 2nd Viscount Lanesborough[3][4], in what was then open countryside. The new St George's Hospital was arranged on three floors and accommodated 30 patients in two wards: one for men and one for women. The hospital was gradually extended and, by 1744, it had fifteen wards and over 250 patients.[5]
By the 1800s, the hospital was slipping into disrepair. The old Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner (now the location of The Lanesborough hotel) was demolished to make way for a new 350 bed new facility. Building began in 1827 designed by architect William Wilkins and the new hospital was completed by 1844.
Among those who have been associated with St George's are:
Henry Gray, anatomist
Harry Hill, stand-up comedian and TV funny man
John Hunter, father of modern surgery
Edward Jenner, introduced vaccination for smallpox
Judah Hirsch Quastel, biochemist
Thomas Spencer Wells, pioneer in abdominal surgery
Thomas Young, physician, mathematician and hieroglyphicologist

Air New Zealand abandon their customers

Air New Zealand abandon their customers

Air New Zealand Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to express my deep disappointment with your treatment of the passengers of flight NZ99 (Auckland > Tokyo) on Friday 11th March. Whilst I understand the reasons for a diversion to Osaka I do not accept the way we were treated. We were told by the pilot not to worry about the diversion as 'we have a presence here and our ground staff will help you out'. Your ground staff merely handed out leaflets that basically said that we were on our own. We saw no one else anywhere. I did notice however that JAL, AA and Air France were going to some effort to contact their passengers and give information. It also appeared that AA had organised accommodation. For an airline that highlights it's customer service I am not impressed. As it stands I will never fly with you again and will do my utmost to steer friends, family, colleagues and aqaintances from flying with you. I will be sending a formal written complaint to you when I finally manage to return to the UK. Yours Martin Allen
