Map of Bitung and Tangkoko National park area
1. TANGKOKO NATIONAL PARK
Do you want to get the feeling of being united with nature? Tangkoko National Park will give you that feeling. Located near Batu Putih village, it is the home of the smallest monkey in the world: Tangkasi (Tarsius Spectrum). It is also the home of approximately 328 bird species, of which 47 are endemic, as well as typical Sulawesi protected animals such as the Black Macaca Monkey (Macaca nigra), the Hornbill, the Cuscus and the Maleo Bird (Macrocephalon maleo). For more details about these animals, go to the main menu under Flora and Fauna. Also found in this park is the Bitung tree (Barringtonia asiatica) whence the name of the city is taken, and a full range of floral communities, including mangrove, beach, lowland, submontane and elfin cloud forests. Due in part to its history of geographic isolation, Sulawesi has evolved a number of birds and mammals unique to the island. The Tangkoko National Park provides one of the last refuges in North Sulawesi for several of these unique species and is therefore an extremely important conservation region. It comprises an area of 8,718 Ha.
The park boundary runs from the sea to an altitude of 1351m, providing trails from beach forest through gently sloping lowland forest and on up to cloud forests that cling to the edges of volcanic calderas. The reserve contains three volcanoes; the mountain Tangkoko (1149 m), the ash cone of Batuangus which results from an eruption in 1839, and the twin peaks of Dua Saudara (1351 m). The ash cone of Batuangus is almost bare of vegetation and has a lava flow that extends to the sea. Where the lava flow meets the sea, a collapsed tunnel has formed a 400 m long cove that contains coral formations and the only mangrove habitat in the reserve.
The 5 km loop trail on the lower north face of Mt. Tangkoko is a perfect trail for early morning exploration for macaques, hornbills and other birds. The trail passes through beach and lowland rainforest and territories of at least three macaque groups. During hornbill breeding season your guide can show you several nest sites along the trail. One particularly dramatic fig tree known as the 'Beringin Lobang' (hole of tree Ficus benyamina) is located on this trail. The host tree of this strangler died and rotted long ago. The fig remains as a free-standing tree with its hollow interior mirroring the form of the original host.
Mountain trail: This 6 km trail leads to the peak of Mt. Tangkoko and allows the hiker to appreciate all habitat types. The climb is fairly strenuous and generally takes about 4-5 hours to reach the top. It is best to depart in the early morning so as to arrive when the weather is best on top. The views of the 1 km wide caldera, neighboring Lembeh island and the city of Bitung can be spectacular. Ask your guide to point out some of the numerous pitcher plants that grow on the caldera's rim.
Snorkeling & bird-watching Batuangus: Batuangus cove provides excellent opportunities for snorkeling and bird-watching. Mangroves line the coral formations at the mouth of the cove and provide habitat for kingfishers, herons and egrets. Birding along the coast to and from the cove is also rewarding. Here, white-bellied sea-eagles and caves with nesting glossy swiftlets may be seen.
Maleo watching: Less than 500m uphill from the Rumasung beach one may visit the only remaining maleo nesting grounds. Although the chances of glimpsing this rare and endangered bird are not 100%, those that arrive before 5 AM with a skilled guide have a good chance.
Tarsier viewing: Tarsier may be viewed in the early dawn or at dusk around their sleeping trees. The most rewarding experience will be for those in small groups who quietly move around the tree spotting tarsiers as they leap in and out. Be considerate of their extremely sensitive eyes when using your flashlight.
Tangkoko National Park can be reached by public transportation from the Girian terminal. The most popular form of transportation in this area is the "Rambo" (roofless Jeep willis). Accommodations are available for overnight stays. One of them is the Benteng Beach and Jungle Resort and Divecenter, located in Batu Putih village.
Go to the Fauna and Flora menu to see pictures of some animals in Tangkoko National Park.
2. MOUNT BATU ANGUS
Mount Batu Angus (1,100 m) is located at the eastern part of Makawidey village. It is an active volcano. Its name means burnt rock which reflects the fact that it is surrounded by burnt rocks that emerge from the congealed lava.
3. MOUNT DUASUDARA
Mount Duasudara (1,351m) is a twin peak located near Duasudara village. There is a legend that the two peaks represent a brother and sister, who transgressed and were cursed.
4. KUNGKUNGAN BAY RESORT
Located a few kilometers from the City of Bitung, this bay resort enjoys mild breezes which flow through thousands of coconut palms, seen in every direction. As you relax in this paradise, you will enjoy spectacular offshor

Candidasa is a coastal town in East Bali.
This is a laid back and very relaxing area of Bali with a wide range of accommodation options. Many visitors, especially Europeans, combine a stay in the hotspots of south Bali with a more relaxed break here. The black sand beaches are very narrow and often disappear altogether at high tide.
In Candidasa there is not much beach, especially at high tide. Concrete breakwaters run parallel to the shore for the length of the town.
There is a quiet and little visited black sand beach west of Candidasa proper called Pantai Labuan Amok. Although it has an unsightly Pertamina oil terminal at one end, this is a clean beach in a pretty bay, and the offshore waters offer good snorkeling with live coral in shallow waters. There are many other small coves and bays to explore in this area and all visitors are encouraged to do so.
Five kilometres north east of Candidasa is Pasir Putih (White Sand Beach), one of East Bali's well-kept secrets. It's a five hundred metre long, isolated, beautiful, white sand beach fringed with coconut palms. There are a few warungs (small shops) who rent sunbeds and umbrellas. Massage ladies make it into a tourist place.

Without Reservations: With or Without, Book 1
Sometimes love just catches you by the tail…
Chayton Winston is a veterinarian. He is also a werewolf. Much to his Native American parents chagrin, he has always dreamed of a fair-haired, Caucasian mate. However, he never imagined his mate would be male. As a heterosexual man, he’s not quite sure what to do with a male mate, but more than willing to find out.
Keaton Reynolds wakes up, in wolf form, and finds himself with a mate. He’s instantly attracted, but not so thrilled to find out the man is straight. Having been in a relationship once before where his partner professed to be “Not gay” left a bad taste in his mouth. Keaton wants to make a break for it and pretend he never set eyes on Chay—but Chay is not ready to let him go.
Together the two work to solidify their shaky relationship and battle the prejudices against homosexuals. Chay must deal with not only his mother’s prejudices against gay men but also her hatred of white people. When a power struggle in Keaton’s pack threatens Keaton’s life, the two men learn to depend on one another and their relationship to get them through it.
Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, graphic language, violence and hot man-love.

Beijing
My tam was quite clean when I first visited Beijing in July 1999 (at least, that's when I developed the film.) And this young man is visiting me in my room, and I was careful to always keep the door open as long as he was there. He is wearing my tam. But that's the end of the story; not the beginning.
I arrived in Beijing early afternoon and, as usual in those days, did not have a clue where I was going to stay. (The only country where I had been super cautious about making reservations was Japan.) But soon after passing through Customs, I enquired about accommodations and was told where I could stay and what bus I should take. The bus was supposed to take us to the hotel.
But the bus didn't. So, here I am in a country where I had not yet learned how to say "Good morning" (Ni hao), and I am stranded with other passengers. We have to get another bus. As luck would have it, this young man and his mother are going to the same hotel which I need to find. It has been too long to remember the details; whether his mother spoke English or not, which I doubt. But I will forever remember the way in which he pronounced "nice" (noice). So, it is possible that he was the one with whom I communicated. Or maybe I simply showed them the piece of paper which I got at the airport with the name and address of the hotel.
So, with their help, I got to the hotel. And this young man would often visit. He may have given me his address but I failed to write.
I just found this picture today, Sunday, 16 March 2008. Good thing I didn't go to church, huh?
Welcome To The Beijing Hotel! Your Life Is In Danger!
I booked myself a few nights in the Beijing Hotel via Travelocity. It's definitely at the top of the heap for value in all my years of cheapskate booking. It's a state-owned hotel just a few blocks from Tiananmen Square. $82 a night bought me a very pretty, well-appointed room with a balcony, in a very modern and well-maintained hotel that I'd rate at 3.5 or 4 stars.
It's missing the Plush Bars And Rich Oak Paneling of the Historic Raffles Hotel next door (hell, you can walk straight from one lobby to the other). But it cost half as much. No contest!
My iPhone charger wouldn't stick in the bathroom wall outlet, so I was forced to improvise.
"How neat!" I thought, pulling a couple of colorful canisters from under the nightstand. "Chests of complimentary tea!" But no: they were emergency escape hoods for use in case of a hotel fire.
Ah.
Well, they kept my plug secure in the wall, anyway.

VW Karmann Ghia 1969
November 1957 in Osnabruck prod

Black, bad and beauty...
California.

This was the view from our room at the Hotel St. Martin in Colmar. In contrast to most of the surroundings, this building was sadly dilapidated. Geraniums are often seen in window boxes throughout Europe. In addition to providing lovely color, they act as a natural insect repellent, providing at least some relief where window screens are non-existent (off topic, it never ceases to amaze me that Europeans have not embraced the idea of window screens).

Hôtel de Ville de Paris
Paris, Franca.
About Hotel de Ville de Paris
The Hotel de Ville (French for "City Hall") in Paris, France, is the building housing the City of Paris's administration. Standing on the place de l'Hotel de Ville (formerly the place de Greve) in the city's IVe arrondissement, it has been the location of the municipality of Paris since 1357. It serves multiple functions, housing the local administration, the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, (since 1977), and also being a venue for large receptions.
In July 1357, Etienne Marcel, provost of the merchants (i.e. mayor) of Paris, bought the so-called maison aux piliers ("House of Pillars") in the name of the municipality on the gently sloping shingle beach which served as a river port for unloading wheat and wood and later merged into a square, the Place de Greve (French for "Square of the Strand"), a place where Parisians often gathered, particularly for public executions. Ever since 1357, the City of Paris's administration has been located on the same location where the Hotel de Ville stands today. Before 1357, the city administration was located in the so-called parloir aux bourgeois ("Parlour of Burgesses") near the Chatelet.
In 1533, King Francis I decided to endow the city with a city hall which would be worthy of Paris, then the largest city of Europe and Christendom. He appointed two architects: Italian Dominique de Cortone, nicknamed Boccador because of his red beard, and Frenchman Pierre Chambiges. The House of Pillars was torn down and Boccador, steeped in the spirit of the Renaissance, drew up the plans of a building which was at the same time tall, spacious, full of light and refined. Building work was not finished until 1628 during the reign of Louis XIII.
During the next two centuries, no changes were made to the edifice which was the stage for several famous events during the French Revolution (notably the murder of the last provost of the merchants Jacques de Flesselles by an angry crowd on 14 July 1789 and the coup of 9 Thermidor Year II when Robespierre was shot in the jaw and arrested in the Hotel de Ville with his followers). Eventually, in 1835, on the initiative of Rambuteau, prefet of the Seine departement, two wings were added to the main building and were linked to the facade by a gallery, to provide more space for the expanded city government.
During the Franco-Prussian War, the building played a key role in several political events. On 30 October 1870, revolutionaries broke into the building and captured the Government of National Defence, while making repeated demands for the establishment of a communard government. The existing government was rescued by soldiers who broke into the Hotel de Ville via an underground tunnel built in 1807, which still connects the Hotel de Ville with a nearby barracks. On 18 January 1871, crowds gathered outside the building to protest against speculated surrender to the Prussians, and were dispersed by soldiers firing from the building, who inflicted several casualties. The Paris Commune chose the Hotel de Ville as its headquarters, and as anti-Commune troops approached the building, Commune extremists set fire to the Hotel de Ville destroying almost all extant public records from the French Revolutionary period. The blaze gutted the building, leaving only a stone shell.
Reconstruction of the hall lasted from 1873 through 1892. The reconstruction of the building was directed by architects Theodore Ballu and Edouard Deperthes following an architectural contest. Ballu also built the Church of La Trinite in the IXe arrondissement and the belfry of the town hall of the Ier arrondissement, opposite the Louvre's east facade. He also restored the Saint-Jacques Tower, a Gothic church tower in a square 150 metres to the west of the Hotel de Ville.
The architects rebuilt the interior of the Hotel de Ville within the stone shell that had survived the fire. While the rebuilt Hotel de Ville is, from the outside, a copy of the 16th century French Renaissance building that stood before 1871, the new interior was based on an entirely new design, with ceremonial rooms lavishly decorated in the 1880s style.
The central ceremonial doors under the clock are flanked by allegorical figures of Art, by Laurent Marqueste, and Science, by Jules Blanchard. Some 230 other sculptors were commissioned to produce 338 individual figures of famous Parisians on each facade, along with lions and other sculptural features. The sculptors included prominent academicians like Ernest-Eugene Hiolle and Henri Chapu, but easily the most famous was Auguste Rodin. Rodin produced the figure of the 18th Century mathematician Jean le Rond d'Alembert, finished in 1882.
The statue on the garden wall on the south side is of Etienne Marcel, the most famous holder of the post of prevot des marchands (provost of merchants) which predated the office of mayor. Marcel came to a sticky end, lynched in 1358

Day 194 - Homemade Granola
Day 194 - Wifey was hard at work making this today, since we figured have all the ingredients, and we do eat cereal in the mornings. So we did some math, instead of paying 7 bucks a box of half this, we are around 2-3 bucks for 2 boxes. There you go some cost savings at the cost of electricity to heat the oven, and the time it takes to make.
Anyways back to point 1 of yesterdays post, hotel+ flight. Yes the resort is big that the best thing to do is hope you can get a good deal on an on site resort, as the transit system there works pretty good, and can get you around wdw pretty quickly. If you are off site, make sure that your hotel has a free shuttle to wdw or it gonna cost you an arm and a leg. I advise that if you choose to rent a car, not to drive it there in the morning, because it will set you back at least 14 bucks a day.
As for the flight, we were fortunate to book it when they had a sale on, plus we got a coupon code because a strike was diverted and they wanted people to book.

St. Mary's Tower Comino
Though it looks little more than a barren, sun-baked rock from the sea, tiny Comino (just 2 km long by 1.7 km wide) harbours a surprising variety of flora and fauna, as well as breathtaking clifftop scenery and two of the Maltese islands’ most alluring beaches, which offer great snorkeling and diving.
Comino takes its name from the cumin herb, one of the few plants that grow wild in the inhospitable topsoil of this basically uninhabitable island. For centuries, Comino sat orphaned in the middle of the channel separating Malta and Gozo. Now it is a prized jewel, albeit sun-baked and barren; it is one of the few places left in the Mediterranean where there are no cars or roads and the land, including its airspace, is a wildlife sanctuary. The indigenous population remains in single figures, and with the exception of the residents of the one hotel all visitors and day-trippers depart before sunset, leaving only yachtsmen to linger for the night in the bays where 400 years ago Saracen pirates lay in wait.
History: A 3rd-centruy BC Phoenician amphora containing an adult skeleton and anointment oils has been uncovered in Santa Marija Bay. There is no logical explanation for the find (the Phoenicians were far too wise to colonize Comino) and it is now on display in the Gozo Archaeological Museum. Almost the only individual who is known to have survived a troglodytic life here was the 13th-century author and prophet Abraham ben Samuel Abulafia, otherwise known as the ‘Spanish Messiah.’ Selfless and harmlessly unhinged, his quest in life was to be at the vanguard of a new religion, uniting in one faith Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Abraham tried to convert Pope Nicholas III (who died of an apoplectic stroke the day Abraham espoused the idea), and had to flee Rome as his execution pyre was lit. The poor man eked out a subsistence on Comino until the end of his days. Here he wrote up his cabbala philosophy and best-known work, the Book of the Sign.
Even after the arrival of the knights in 1530 the island was no more than a pirate’s lair, with corsairs laying in wait under the lee of the southwestern cliffs for ships crossing the channel. In 1618 Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt finally built St. Mary’s Tower, which linked a line of defence and communication from Valletta to the citadel in Victoria. Doomed efforts were made during the Order’s reign to populate the island and Comino remained no more than another game preserve, where a trespasser ‘armed with gun, dog, ferret or net’ could be sentenced to three years as a galley slave.
The British legacy to Comino (and Filfla) was not a proud one. In 1800, after Nelson saw off the French, some 2000 prisoners-of-war were interned on the island before being sent home. At the beginning of the First World War, the British built an isolation hospital, now the village, in an effort to contain the many frightful diseases imported with the sick and dying servicemen of the Crimean campaign. During and after the Second World War, their imperialistic habits continued, as the Royal Navy fired torpedos at it for practice; the waters were so clear that the unexploded torpedos could be retrieved from the seabed. Their final act in 1961 was to sell the island to a British development company who subsequently built both the Comino Hotel and Club Nautico. Their 150-year lease was surrendered back to the independent Malta government in the 1970s.
A tower on Comino to guard the troublesome channel was first mooted in the early 15th century when King Alphonso V of Aragon levied a local wine tax to pay for it, but having collected the money he squandered it elsewhere. Nearly 200 years later, in 1618, Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt built St. Mary’s Tower to the design of Vittorio Cassar. As a partnership they had already beefed up the coastal defences with the Wignacourt Tower, and Forts St. Lucien and St. Thomas; St. Mary’s Tower was their final and most costly effort. Commanding the high ground on the southwestern dliffs, St. Mary’s is smaller but no less robust and fierce than its Maltese forerunners; Cassar had by now perfected his technique. The classical four-square fort has a commanding presence of both channels from its raised podium and it housed a permanent garrison of 30 men. Today it is a lookout post for the Armed Forces of Malta and a snoop around it to see its far-reaching rooftop views is at their friendly discretion. The crumbling escutcheon above the makeshift drawbridge is de Wignacourt’s. The fort has struggled with the elements for nearly 400 years and is not in good condition, but when crossing the channel at night the powerful uplighting imposes its strength on the channel once more. The old isolation hospital is 300 yards away. Scattered around in front of what is daftly known as Liberty Square is the detritus of bygone conflicts and ancient rusty machinery which no one has bothered to cart away.
Best Western Hotel in Olbia
As time goes by, I continue to read D.H. Lawrence "Sea and Sardinia" and I like it. It is strange that I should enjoy such an out-of-style (fro me) book. But I do. perhaps it is because he writes about what I experience and brings two properties to the "table": a) superb language and literary ability (he is like a mouth to my feelings) and b) it is non-fiction in the sense that he gives a subjective, yet detailed, almost-100-years-old account of places I see and visit now.
Here is an example:
But it still reminds me of Malta: lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere. Belonging to nowhere, never having belong to anywhere. To Spain and the Arabs and the Phoenicians most. But as if it had never really had a fate. No fate. Left outside of time and history.
The spirit of the place is a strange thing. Our mechanical age tries to override it. But it does not succeed. In the end the strange, sinister spirit of place, so diverse and so adverse in different places, will smash our mechanical oneness into smithereens, and all that we think the real thing will go off with a pop, and we shall be left staring.
And this is perfect:
I have been to Malta, at the same time that I visited Cagliari when I was 13 years old (as part of this Mediterranean cruise). I recall Malta, but not Cagliari from that trip. I am not sure if Cagliari (Sardinia) is really outside of time and history. But it is "retarded" relative to the modern developed world, this I do feel. And then, it is humbling to think about how our technology overrides the natural spirit of places. Today is the knowledge age, not the mechanical anymore (that was the age of my father, really). And during this trip to Olbia I selected a hotel that had Internet in all rooms (according to the web sites). But in practice, the hotel had no interent in the rooms... the people there tried very hard to make good on the promise, let me work in the manager's office, and brought technicians to fix the problem... which was fixed for a few hours before fading away again and again, until I stopped demanding it fixed and just enjoyed the hospitality and the beauty of that rugged part of the Island.
