Wheel shopping I am contemplating getting new wheels/tires for summer. This is the desktop cluttter that ensued. Note the awesome spreadsheet. That is in fact a *huge* list of wheel/tire fitments and how they relate to stock. Many thanks to EddNog on yoursciontc.com/forums for that. It's an incredible help. Also note that I am picking wheel photos off the internets and photoshopping them on a picture of my car. Yes, I am currently obsessed with Racing Hart wheels, especially the CRs. Chevy Pickup Truck (Not Sure if 1964) with Tiny True Story ~ Can Someone Please Help Me Verify the Year? Car Show - For Now they are all SOOC - at Greenberry Tavern on Highway 99W and Greenberry Road between Corvallis and Monroe, Oregon, USA Story Part is between the rows of asterisks ************************************************************************* I had one just like this, except the engine wasn't all souped up. In fact it had some problem I had to occasionally get out at a stop light and open the hood and take a long screwdriver and do something to make it run again. I can't recall what the problem was. I think it had something to do with the throttle, but I got very quick and very good at fixing it. When we bought the truck (not this one but one like it) in about 1985 or so, it was already pretty old. My husband, at the time said are you sure it is worth $400 or $500? I said, "Oh yeah, the tailgate alone is worth about $100; and if it makes it from Creswell to Eugene, Oregon, it is worth it!" The tailgate was in very nice condition, and they were hard to find at wrecking yards at that time. I never did have to part out anything on it. In spite of the little occasional quirk at stoplights, it was a good truck. I drove the truck for a year or two and then sold it for $412. Not bad at all. ************************************************************************** Can someone who is positive of the year help me out. I want to post it in the correct year, and I can't remember if 1963 or 1964 or what? Pat turned green and gave the boy one. final. chance. "NOO! QUOO! LURR!! DIS!! AR! MA! NINT!!" And they didn't give it to him. Maybe he needed to buy a vowel? W.C. Standerwick ECW Bristol VRL LRN 60J fleet number 60 Trans Lancs Rally Heaton Park Manchester Sunday 5th September 2010 It does not get any better than this, a preserved W.C. Standerwick ECW CH42/18CT Bristol VRL LRN 60J, which stole this years Trans Lancs Rally, held at Heaton Park, Manchester. Lets look at the background to the famous Standerwick VRL's. By the mid 60s, Ribble were looking for a replacement double deck coach for the Weymann bodied Leyland Atlantean '' Gay Hostess'' coaches, the word gay in the 60s meant happy. Bristol had introduced the rear-engined VRL chassis in 1966, which featured the engine mounted longitudinally on the rear offside of the chassis. The VRL, unlike the Atlantean and Fleetline could be bodied with a 36ft body. Ribble seen that the VRL could form the basis for their future double deck coach. At the 1968 Earls Court Motor Show the prototype ECW bodied VRL appeared and stole the show, the prototype entered service during December 1968. The prototype VRL FCK 450G, was powered by the Power Plus Leyland 0.680 engine producing 175bhp at 2,000rpm, the drive was via a five speed semi automatic gearbox and other features of the VRL included power steering. The VRL had a 18ft. 6in wheelbase, the overall height of the vehicle was 14ft and the headroom on the lower deck was 5ft. 11in and the headroom on the upper deck was 5ft. 9inch. Ribble were happy with the prototype and purchased a further 29 production VRLs between 1970-1972. The production models were on the Series 2 VRL/LH6L chassis and differed from the prototype, in that the fuel tanks were on the nearside of the chassis, there was no wheel trims fitted and the window in the luggage locker door was not fitted. The seating layout was the same as the prototype, with 18 on the lower deck and 42 on the upper deck, all the seats were reclining. The toilet was mounted at the rear of the lower deck, with the stairs alongside, the entrance door, like on todays double deck coaches was mounted ahead of the rear wheels. Other features included Webasto heating system and forced air ventilation. All but the last two VRLs wore the Ribble/Standerwick livery and looked awesome. Numbers 78 and 79 wore the NATIONAL white livery, with 78 featuring blue window surrounds and lower skirt panel. All the VRLs were to be painted into the NATIONAL white livery. The VRLs were used on the Standerwick London services from Blackpool, East Lancashire and Southport. In the early days some of the VRLs had made the long journey to Keswick in the Lake District. It is well known the VRLs were troublesome in service, the main problem was the complex driveline from the gearbox to the rear axle. Because Ribble/Standerwick were the only company within the NBC to operate double deck coaches, meant if one broke down outside Lancashire, them two single deck coaches would have to be sent out. What really made the NBC decide to withdraw the VRLs, was when fleet number 72 travelling on the overnight Colne London service, overturned on the M1 near Luton on 26th July 1974, the driver had to swerve to avoid a jack knifed articulated truck, due to the wet road surface, the driver lost control and the vehicle tipped over, three passengers were killed and over 30 were injured. The Transport Minister of the day, said that he was going to ban double deck coaches from using the outside lane of a motorway, this did not take place until, the mid 90s. By 1977 all the VRLs had been withdrawn and replaced with 12-metre Leyland Leopards. Things went a full circle when in 1982, the NBC decided they needed a double deck coach. 200002.9 (20100114) I love my car. A 1993 Honda Del Sol Si, Pearl Green in color. I bought it new 16 1/2 years ago with only 37 miles on the odometer. I bought it on vacation in Massachusetts even though Ilive in Michigan. I have a very forgiving family that spent a lot of that vacation in a Honda dealership. Did you know that Massachusetts doesn't have temporary tags. Today it passed the 200,000 mile mark. On Grand River Ave at the curve in front of the Turner-Dodge house in Lansing, MI. It would have been nice to get a shot of all those zeroes, but by the time I found myself parked at the airport (my destination) it had gone a bit beyond that. 17 winters of Michigan driving have left its toll on the car. Rust is now endemic on all body panels except a hood replaced when a "helpful" person lowered (without removing the rod that held it open) it after having me jump start their Caddy. They'd let it run down by running the AC full blast at a rest stop with the engine off. My mechanics say I can expect only a year or two at most before it falls apart. I've tried to look for a replacement, but nothing comes even remotely close to a sporty, front wheel drive 2 seater that gets 35 gets mpg. This car still gets 30+ on the freeway and close to that in town. And the seats are comfortable enough that a two day drive to Florida is a pleasure. Especially if I can take the targa top off and stow it into the trunk and still have enough room for a full load of luggage. I've seriously considered having the car rebuilt from the ground up. Maybe. For now I'll just keep on driving it. I love this car. The only thing I did wrong when I got this car was to forgo the fancy 4 speaker sound system. Maybe when I rebuild it. The objects to be moved are tilted forward, the ledge is inserted underneath them, and the objects allowed to tilt back and rest on the ledge. What a mix of colors and textures 0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0 I don't know what the surface of Mars looks like, but this must be close. Bisti is a magical mixture of colorful clay and rock with some of the most fanciful rock forms I have ever seen. 0 ACTIVITIES DAY FIVE OF TWELVE 0 After a good night’s rest at Farmington, New Mexico we left at dawn, as was our custom on this trip, with three major destinations in mind: Bisti (pronounced: Biss Tie) badlands; Chaco Canyon; and Bandelier national monument. We had motel rooms reserved at Santa Fe. The hike into the rock and clay formations at Bisti turned out to be my favorite stop on the entire road trip. I had never been there before. We were the only ones there, the weather was bright and clear, and the formations were absolutely amazing. I used my small Garmin etrex to make certain that we would hike to one of the two “good spots” and back out, in the most time efficient manner. There is another good section of Bisti that I know, one day, I will return to visit. Same with the De-Na-Zin area. Always something for another road trip. After Bisti we made our way to Chaco Canyon and visited Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Bonito. I had been to Chaco three times before but never in a situation where I wasn’t rushed for time. Ed and I enjoyed our walks to both ruins and took our time. After Chaco Canyon it was clear (using the ETA on the NUVI navigator), that we weren’t going to make Bandelier with enough light to really enjoy it, so for the first and only time on this road trip, we altered our route solely as a result of “running out of time”. There were several times we altered plans due to weather and dirt (mud) road conditions. So instead of traveling the highways that would lead us to Bandelier from Chaco, we checked the map and took a scenic but more direct highway into Santa Fe (highway 96 instead of highway 4 that would have taken us to Santa Fe via Bandelier). We got into Santa Fe right at dark, in time to check out the historic town square, the cathedral, and get a good meal. The next morning would follow a now established and predictable routine: On each and every day of this road trip, Ed and I would load our gear back in the Jeep right at or just before dawn, always looking forward to the new day’s destinations. The way a road trip should be. 0 3,875 MILE/12 DAY ~ 4 CORNERS ROAD TRIP OVERVIEW 0 At the start of year 2011, I made tentative plans to take a two week solo “road trip” through the Four Corners area (The Colorado Plateau), during the last half of March. Then, if my wife could get the time needed off from her part time job, I also planned a “road trip” vacation to the Southwest, in April with her. When I put the plan together for the March trip, I decided to see if an old friend of mine, Ed (Flickr’s: OldWrangler), might be interested in joining me. I volunteered to take my old four wheel drive pickup truck and split the gasoline expense with him. We would each get an inexpensive motel room on the road to serve as “base camps” to hike, photograph, and explore back roads in the Four Corners area. Not only did Ed accept but he also proposed that we take his brand new 4-door Jeep Wrangler instead of my old pickup truck. That didn’t take any thinking on my part. I LOVE Jeeps and Ed and I have always got along well (decades ago, I worked for him and we had taken a fun road trip together back in 2008, along with my friend John and my youngest son). The deal was sealed. We left my house in Central Washington early Monday morning on the 14th of March. We returned 12 days and 3,875 miles later on Friday evening March 25th. We spent a lot of time drinking Diet Pepsi from the ice chest and keeping the hits of the 60s (and occasionally the 70s), cranked up high on the Jeep’s Sirius satellite radio sound system. Sing along music! “Road trip” tunes. Weather often dictated changes to our proposed route and activities. We stayed flexible, and in the end we visited the large majority of places we had hoped to see, when the road trip began. We had sun and clear skies, snow, dust storms, and high winds at times. Ed’s Jeep had an outside temperature display. We drove in everything from18 degree weather to temperatures in the 70s in New Mexico. Here in outline form are the places we saw, hiked, photographed, and visited during the 12 day road trip: Mon 3.14.11 * Interstate travel from my house in Central Washington to Lehi, Utah Tue 3.15.11 * Scenic back roads ( Hwys: 6, 89, & 31) from Spanish Fork to Huntington, Utah * Dirt road travel to “The Wedge” and down Buckhorn Wash to I-70. * Side trip to the Head of Sinbad petroglyph and then on to Moab. Wed 3.16.11 * Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands NP (Mesa Arch & Upheaval Dome) * The Shafer “Jeep” Trail down to the White Rim road and back to Moab. * Hike to Delicate Arch & visit Windows section in Arches NP. Thu 3.17.11 * Newspaper Rock in the Needles district of Canyonlands NP * Attempt back road travel thru the Abajo What a way to start a day! 0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0 There is a beauty of morning not present in sunsets (my opinion). This was the landscape scene we saw Wednesday morning as we made our way slowly to the Mesa Arch trail head in the Island of the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park. 0 ACTIVITIES DAY THREE OF TWELVE 0 We had rooms reserved at the Moab, Utah Motel 6 for Tuesday and Wednesday night. This would serve as our “base camp” for visits to the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands and to Arches National Park. Taking only camera gear and day hiking packs, we left Moab just before dawn on Wednesday morning for our visit to the Island in the Sky area. We stopped on the way into Canyonlands to photograph the sunrise and to look over and photograph the Shafer trail from the rim. In the 1980s, I had ridden a dual sport motorcycle (Honda XL500) along the White Rim road and up the Shafer trail. I was hoping that the road might be in good enough shape to travel it on this trip with Ed’s Jeep. After stopping at the Shafer trail overlook we made our way to the Mesa Arch TH parking. We were pleased to find nobody else there. We would not see one other person on the hike in or out nor doing our stay photographing Mesa Arch. A pleasant surprise. After Mesa Arch we drove to Grandview Point and took a few photos there. Then backtracking we took the side road to the Upheaval Dome trail. It was the first of several geological formations that geologists have yet to agree on as to what formed it. It appears as a giant crater with a light colored “sharp” dome, rising out of its center. I tried some side by side shots there so I could stitch a panoramic photo together later. We stopped at the Canyonlands visitor’s center on the way back and found that a free “permit” was required these days to drive the Shafer Trail and the White Rim road, so we obtained our pass and headed down the fun, interesting, and exciting route off the Island in the Sky plateau, down the old Shafer cattle trail to the White Rim road, which then runs along an esplanade above the Colorado and Green Rivers. Traveling down the Shafer and along the White Rim roads in the Jeep, with windows rolled down, was a real treat. There are some rough spots on the White Rim road so it took us awhile to work our way back to Moab (for a mid-day meal). That afternoon, we drove into Arches National Park headed for the trail to Delicate Arch. The weather came apart on us by this time and the gusting winds were absolutely fierce. Ignoring the blasting winds as best we could we made our way to Delicate Arch. The bad weather kept the number of people down, but the lighting wasn’t the best - - and staying upright in the high gusts of wind took some work in places. Still, we had come to see Delicate Arch, up close, and the hike there was well worth the time. Leaving the Delicate Arch trail, the wind dropped down a little as light faded over Arches NP. We drove to the Windows Section of Arches and then out of the park as the sun began to set. Somewhere near the Petrified Dunes viewpoint area of the park, Ed sensed excellent sunset light in the offing, and we parked the Jeep off the side of the road, and climbed a small ridge for some photographs. Ed’s intuition was perfect. Though the winds got cold, we got some of the best light of the entire day for photography, with warm red sandstones in dusk light and the snow covered La Sal Mountains in the distance (Mt. Peale at 12,720’ is the highest peak in these high desert mountains). A bright moon peeked through the cobalt blue evening skies and storm clouds traveled quickly across the sky. So that is how the third full day of our Four Corners road trip ended; photographing the golden sunset light inside Arches National Park. Fun. 0 3,875 MILE/12 DAY ~ 4 CORNERS ROAD TRIP OVERVIEW 0 At the start of year 2011, I made tentative plans to take a two week solo “road trip” through the Four Corners area (The Colorado Plateau), during the last half of March. 37 Ford Scallop Yeah this is one regal 1937 Ford Coupe with a nice contrasting scallop down the side and back. I shot this bewdy of a Rod with me trusty Canon G11 and then proceeded to create a photo-manipulation that included two views of the car. I’m afraid I taxed me five year old Mac-Mini to the max building this wide-angle image. I shot each view with the wide-angle lens adjusted to about 10 mm and let ‘er rip as they say in our new neck of the nape in the Texas Hill Country. They speak with a distinct accent in the region – kinda funny sounding to the ear – unlike m’self ~:0) This Custom Hot-Rod was displayed at the Alzafar Shrine Custom Car Show in San Antonio, Texas last month. Lots of great cars there. I’ll be working up images of some of the cars I snapped while there. Now for a point of contention I have with the nice folks who share their Works-of-Art on Wheels with the rest of us. Like many a Custom Car at a show these machines have outstanding “lines”. What do I mean by that? Well, that is to say that the design-work on these autos is superb to say the least. Sadly, while on display the hoods and often the trunks of these show-cars are opened to display the engine or a pic-nic basket or even a set of tools. Sort of makes ‘em look like they’re broken down on the side of the road if you ask me.~:0) This short-sighted move just ruins the lines of the Rod I’m wanting to photograph – and when asked, most owners are reluctant to batten them up for my convenience. Personally, I’m not particularly interested in the contents of the hood (bonnet) or trunk (boot). Guess I’m just going to have to get up even earlier in the morning to show up before they have a chance to send up the flag – so-to-speak. Just Sayin’ - ‘course you might say what I really want is an individual shoot at the location of my choice – Fat Chance that – Ha! ~:0) VivaChas! Paper Quilling 10X13 Tyler (detail) This is a close up of the traffic cone for an order that I completed Dec.2008 for a 5 year old boy named Tyler. This pic was taken while it was still on my work board(artist canvas board). The cone made from a tight coil of about 5-6 strips of quilling paper that I pushed through with a pencil point(this was a pain to get both cones the same size). The bottom is made from cardstock that I cut into a rectangle shape(See my photostream to view the completed order and the other orders in my "Quilling Set".
